A Lesson In All Things Weasley
Christmas Eve came around fast after the ball. James and Scorpius had not gotten a bottle of firewhiskey to drown out the mind numbing party. In fact, I danced with the Malfoy heir again and then James decided to join the revolving door of wizards. Freddie helped me loosen up by leading me in the most ridiculous dance I had partaken in that night. I giggled the whole time. Fred just grinned sinisterly. If I had not been having fun, I would have been afraid. The elegant night turned out much better than I thought it would.
The morning of Christmas Eve was cold and beautiful. It had snowed through the night and London was blanketed in glistening powder. The low sun shined and it looked like a wonderland in yards and unplowed streets. I had looked out of the window in the kitchen while doing the dishes. I was mesmerized by the pure white coat that had wrapped around the world. Well, the little piece of the world I was in.
Ginny had finally broken down and just let me do the dishes in the morning. Everyone hates doing them in the morning, except for me. I took that time to just stand there and think. I would mainly ponder what my parents were doing. How they were doing. And if they missed me. Well, the last one was a given. I am an only child, of course they miss me. But did it hurt them as much as it hurt me?
"Cal, are you almost done?" Lily's quiet voice jerked me from my musings. I looked down at the empty sink and my sudsy hands.
"Yeah, I am just finishing up." I replied as I drained the water and rinsed the bubbles from the walls of the basin.
"The three of us are in the library, so you can join us there." she said before I heard her step away from the entrance to the kitchen. I ran water over my own hands and shut it off. A quick hand dry from a dish towel and I was following her to the library.
I found the three Potter children huddled on the plush couch beside the bookcases. I sat on the floor at the base of the couch and observed them quietly. Albus looked up from piece of parchment they were looking over. He gave me a quick wink and pulled the paper from James' hands and held it up for me to look at. It was almost like a family tree and grew intrigued as to why they were showing me a family tree.
"This is the Weasleys." James began. I felt like I was in a lesson at school and straightened my back to show he had my rapt attention, "You will find all of our uncles and their wives on this parchment. We even connected them to their children so you wouldn't get confused."
"Why isn't Teddy on here?" I had glanced over the list of children and saw some new names as well as the one that was glaringly missing. James snatched the parchment from my fingers.
"Albus! You left off our brother?!" his voice sounded angry, but there was no heat in his eyes. Albus just rolled his eyes.
"Well, if you hadn't noticed, I also left off your name as well. And Lily's. And mine." he replied, "Mum and dad are also not there because she is bloody living with us. Or do you think her so daft she wouldn't remember our names?"
"Then how come she didn't mention our names?" James looked at me. I felt my cheeks warm. Well, I did not realize their names were not on the list either. I was more curious as to who Teddy's biological parents were.
"Because I'm so stupid I forgot your names?" I supplied with a shrug of my shoulders, "I only mentioned his name because I was curious who his parents were. Wouldn't it be rude of me not to know their names at least? It appeared unfair since your Uncle Fred is on this list and I know he passed away in the war."
"Oh, well, that makes sense." James said as he dipped a quill in an ink pot. I watched him scribble some more information on the parchment, "They are Remus and Nymphadora Lupin. But I wouldn't say that name in anyone's prescence. Just call her Tonks if you mention her. Those who knew her when she was alive had their lives threatened when they used her given name. She hated that name. Dad smiles fondly when he tells the story about first meeting her."
"So, her name is Tonks?" I looked over the revised list. I caught the nod of affirm from Lily in my peripheral vision, "You mentioned uncles. How come there is this lady on here, Luna Scamander? You said this was a list of Weasleys?" I glanced at James and he seemed to be pondering his next words.
"Oh for Salazar's Sake!" Albus snapped. He swiped the family tree from me and crumbled it into a ball, "It will be easier to explain our family so you are prepared for tonight."
"Why didn't you start with that?" I recieved a glare for my cheek.
"You know our cousins; Louis, Molly, Fred, Roxanne, Lucy, Rose and Hugo. Our adopted brother, Teddy, is married to our cousin Victoire. She is Uncle Bill's oldest offspring. Now, she has a younger sister named Dominique. She is currently training to be an Auror, like dad. Now, Luna Scamander is an honorary Weasley. Mum and her were friends in school and dad became close to her after his godfather, Sirius Black, was killed after his fifth year at school. Aunt Luna had lost her mother at age nine, so they bonded over the loss of their parents.
"Aunt Luna married Rolf Scamander and they have twin boys, Lorcan and Lysander. They start school next year. Those two are quiet and reserved. And Aunt Luna is eccentric, but one of the most loving people ever. Uncle Rolf is also quiet, but honestly, I think it is because the Weasleys are so overwhelming, he still hasn't gotten used to being around them. Uncle Charlie lives in Romania where he is a dragon tamer. He is unmarried and childless. But he has his dragons to care for, so he is happy. Plus, he likes to spoil the rest of us. So, we don't mind that we are a few cousins short from his single status." Albus paused to take a breathe. I felt my eyes start to cross. This was a lot of information. And the surface was barely scratched.
"Aunt Fluer is married to Uncle Bill. She is French and we sometimes have a hard time understanding her. Aunt Hermione has to translate every now and again. Uncle Percy is married to Aunt Audrey and is Molly and Lucy's dad. Uncle George, you've already met, is married to Aunt Angelina. She is wicked cool and coaches for the Holyhead Harpies. But do not cross her. She has an uneven temper and her stinging hex has a lot of bite. Uncle Ron is married to Aunt Hermione. Uncle Ron might look at you funny because you are a Slytherin. It is a deep rooted rivalry and it hasn't lessened with time. Aunt Hermione will smooth over anything he might say to make you angry." Albus offered me a comforting smile before continuing on, "And now we get to our grandparents." I shuddered.
"I've heard about your grandmother, Molly. She sounds scary." I said quietly. Albus chuckled. James grinned widely and Lily giggled.
"Grandmum Molly is the sweetest witch you will ever meet. She just has a temper if crossed. But your soft voice and pretty face will melt her heart." Albus soothed my worries. I blushed at the praise, "And granddad Arthur is easily distracted by anything muggle. He will start to tell you all about how everything eclectic works. So, be prepared for that."
"Eclectic?" I murmured, completely lost.
"Electricity. Granddad Arthur is a very confused man." Lily took pity on me. I scrubbed my forehead with a hand.
"Alright. That makes sense." I felt a little dizzy, but I was absorbing all of it. I felt pretty proud of myself, "That doesn't sound so bad. I can't wait to put faces to names."
"Ha! She says that now, Al, but she hasn't seen a family gathering yet." James smirked over towards his brother.
"Hey! I am right here!" I scowled at James, "I can hear you."
"Then listen close." James said as he turned his gaze onto my ice blue eyes, "We are a loud and chaotic bunch. We like to run and not walk and we like to scream and not talk. We drive our mothers mental and our fathers could care less. You think we are bad at school, wait until we are in a small confined area." I looked into his forest green eyes for the lie. I could not find any lie. He was telling the truth.
"Is that why you lot are good at causing chaos and terrorizing the student body." I glanced at Albus and he had an impassive expression on his features.
"So, let's review your lesson on Weasleys." he said. I groaned in frustration, "Because they are going to try and mess you up. Uncle Bill and Uncle Charlie are good at that."
"Fine, let's review." I said with resignation. Christmas should not be this confusing.
A/N: This was more of a filler chapter, but I finally broke through the mental block on this story. It only took a week and a half...Awful.
I have some bad news. I will be leaving on Saturday for the Kenai Peninsula for commercial fishing. This is how I earn my keep. I earn a good chunk of my money doing this. So, of course, I wouldn't give it up. The only problem is during this time I live on a sandy lot with no internet. But! Never fear! Henny is going to see about obtaining an internet stick. So, my updates might come slower and my PM response time might be more spaced out, but I will try to stay as connected as I can. The bright side is that I will have some down time and hopefully be able to get a lot of writing done while I am there.
So, I hope that you, my faithful reader, will not hate me or scorn me. :D I will try my hardest to at least update every now and then. I will not abandon you! I promise! :D
Until next time!
Henny, that lucky Penny!
