Chapter 3 – Trust the Smile
Two months have passed since she found that strange man on the shrine, and two months since she has decided to heal him.
So far, his injuries were gone. But she couldn't say the same with his lungs since it still needs a through check-up, when he wakes up.
If he wakes up, that is.
At this point, Kagome is inwardly laughing at herself for nursing a man back to health who has no certainty of even waking up.
Kagome laid down.
She just finished his healing session for the day with his lungs and is completely exhausted. Compared to her regular work in the hospital, this is much more exhausting since it requires the use of her spiritual powers. Speaking of which, her friends and co-workers are curious as to what she was up to these past few days because she doesn't stay much in the hospital and doesn't hang out much with them anymore.
Shifting, she faced the cause of her lack of time from her peers and life in general these days and wondered if he will ever wake up.
…
There was something cold.
There was also something hot.
She can feel something cold pressed on her neck.
She can also feel something warm on her mouth.
Her breathing was constrained, she panicked and was about to get up but there was another weight on her.
She snapped her eyes open and found herself staring into obsidian orbs.
"Who are you?"
Kagome didn't hear his questions as she was busying putting everything together. She realized that this was the man that she was anxiously waiting for to wake up. But he has pinned her to the ground, one hand on her mouth, and there was a sharp cold weapon pressed on her neck.
She tried to thrash this man but he was strong. Her spiritual energy has not yet been restored, and her bow and arrow was far from her reach.
She couldn't breathe well and this man was going to kill her.
Thinking that all her good action towards this man were put in vain because he was clearly trying to kill her.
Tears suddenly welled up in her eyes.
But a strange thing happened when the man removed her hand, kunai and himself from Kagome and apologized.
"I-I'm sorry, I did not mean to cause you distress."
Startled, Kagome sat up from the floor and backed up as far away as possible from the man for dear life.
He was looking at her and reached out as if to apologize, to which only made Kagome move backward again.
"Y-You tried to kill me," Kagome accused.
"No, I apologize if that was what it looked like. And I-" The man was trying to explain himself.
"Who are you? Why are you here? Are you alive or dead?" This time Kagome was shouting, distress evident on her voice.
"I-I…" The man looked confused.
She does not have time for riddles this time. "Answer me!"
"I'm sorry but…I don't know."
Kagome stared wide eyed at this man, is he kidding? Maybe it is some trick he's using so that she will lower her guard, then he'll kill her when she least expects it. There is also a possibility that this man is hiding from bad guys or the authorities explaining the wounds that he had.
"Stop lying, you want to kill me."
"No, uh…"
"Kagome,"
"Thank you. I apologize for earlier but it was not my intention to scare you like that, Kagome-san." The man explained politely, threw his kunai at the other side of the shrine and held his hands up to show his sincerity.
"How will I know you're not lying?"
"I cannot remember anything to be perfectly honest with you Kagome-san, but I can assure you that I mean you no harm and that you can trust me."
There was a weird feeling in her chest whenever he would say her name. But Kagome shook it off.
She narrowed her eyes at him. "How can I trust you?"
The man was silent for a moment and smiled.
"I guess you just have to trust me."
Kagome blushed.
For it was not his words that made her heart melt but rather his smile.
…
The man continued to stay at the shrine because she doesn't want to explain herself to the other villagers, and she was still sceptical of this man's credibility. She doesn't want to endanger anyone in the village, so it will be better if he stayed here for a while for her to observe. She can't bring him in the village.
Little by little, she has learned that this man had amnesia. But upon inspecting his head, he found that he doesn't have any kind of head trauma.
Which brought her to question herself once again, if maybe he was faking it.
Strangely enough, the only thing that he could remember was the name Itachi and that's about it. No surname, no parents or any relatives that he could remember just that name so they concluded that maybe that is his name or someone close to him. But for now, they would use that name to address him instead of Kagome just addressing him as you or that man. Itachi, from what she observed was a quiet man who only speaks when necessary, and is very polite in their conversations. He seems smart from what Kagome observed, and he looked like someone who is in their early twenties, which makes him probably on the same age as her.
"Don't you have work today, Kagome-san?"
Kagome's line of thought was interrupted. "No, I don't work on Mondays and Sundays."
Today, it was raining again so they were just sitting on the wooden floors of the Shrine, staring at the pitter patter of the rain while having onigiri and some tea that Kagome brought from her home.
"What do you do besides work?"
Someone is curious today.
"I normally stay at home and tend to my garden herbs but since it's been raining a lot I can't do much."
This man, Itachi had his eyes glued on her as he grabbed another onigiri from the plate. "I do not want to cause you any more trouble as it is by having you to take care of me."
Correction, he didn't seem smart but he is actually smart. That startled Kagome for a bit. He was right, she isn't obliged to take care of him anymore and she has already done her part by healing him. He could go on his merry way if he wishes but, Kagome can't let that because he still has the Shikon Jewel.
Kagome squinted her eyes towards Itachi's chest, and saw that the Shikon Jewel is still there, whole and glinting with white light.
At least it wasn't tainted. So it could mean that this man is not a bad person.
"I'm a medic, it is part of my job."
"But I do not have any money to pay you with Kagome-san," he said apologetically.
She gave it a thought, "Money isn't the only way that you could pay me. Consider this as a debt that you owe, that you can pay sometime in the future whenever you see fit. It could be a favour of some sorts."
You could start by giving me back the Shikon Jewel.
Itachi continued to look at her with his obsidian orbs, and Kagome felt a strange tug at her chest.
"All right, Itachi-kun?"
And before she knew, she couldn't stop the smile that formed in her lips.

Wasn't that cheesy? Or do you want more? Of course you want more guys! But, don't worry because I will be uploading the next few chapters in a while I hope. And while you're at it, I hope you could give me a few inspirations by mentioning in your reviews what you want to see in the future chapters. Thank you!
