Last Time on "What I Wouldn't Do": After living with the Mellark family since Freshman Year, Delly moved back home to her parents and siblings. Johanna and Cashmere aren't speaking to each other since Gale cheated on Johanna with Cashmere. The dance team and Cheerleading squad are having fundraisers for homecoming money. At the dance team's fundraiser Peeta was trying to work up the courage to tell Katniss he wants to meet her mother and Clove caught Cato with another girl. After that Clove spent her time with Gloss.
Chapter 4 "Out of place (Part 1) "
Katniss' POV
"Katniss!"
Half asleep, I pull my covers over my head in attempt to find hide from whomever is shouting for me.
"Get up."
My covers are yanked off me. I moan in disappointment.
"Damn," Johanna says. "Why are you so tired?"
"I went to the dance team's fundraiser yesterday," I say with a yawn. "Peeta wanted some company."
"It's not like you were a dancer. It's noon and you're still in bed. Get it together, Katniss."
"Saturday is my sleeping day, so shut up." Johanna laughs at that. "What are you even doing here?" I ask while going into my washroom to refreshing freshen up.
"Cecelia is a friend of your mom. So, she wanted to stop by and say hi."
I didn't even know my mother had friends.
"How'd they even met?" I ask while combing the knots out of my hair.
"During our trip, Cecelia sprained her wrist and your mom was her nurse, so."
"Is she okay?" I begin to brush my teeth. "Cecelia, I mean," I mumble between stokes.
"She's fine. Even better now that she has a friend to bug. I mean, she is friends with Annie's parents but they're so busy with Grace's wedding that Cecelia has been feeling lonely lately. I'm glad she has your mom now."
I step back into my bedroom to find Johanna lying on my bed. I roll my eyes and take a set seat beside her.
"Cecelia is definitely going to be invited to the wedding," Johanna continues with. "So now that your mom is good with Cecelia, I'm sure you Everdeens with be invited too."
A wedding where Cato and Finnick will both be at? Yeah, I think I'll pass on that invitation.
"Do you know when the wedding is?" I ask.
"Annie told me sometime in March," Johanna mumbles. "Speaking of Annie, I heard someone was jealous last night."
"Like you wouldn't believe."
At first, Annie was perfectly fine with Finnick being a dancer at the event in the beginning. It wasn't until Annie saw all those girls lining up for Finnick that she regretted letting Finnick participate in it. Every time I saw her, she was staring at Finnick with a look full of jealously.
"Well, what does she expect? She i's dating Finnick Odair." Johanna has a point. "Of course girls would be going crazy to dance with him. I hope she is okay, though."
"Why don't we do go check on her?" I suggest. "Make sure she is okay and maybe we can talk to Finnick."
Johanna shakes her head. "The cheerleaders are already setting up for the carnival tonight—" —" There's a carnival tonight? "—and the dance team is cleaning the gym and counting the money from last night. Neither Annie nor Finnick will be available until later. But, I know the perfect way to kill time. Get dressed. We're going to go see your boyfriend."
Johanna leaves to let my mother and Cecelia know we'll be out. I throw on my usual Saturday wear and quickly braid my hair to the side. Within a few minutes, I hear Johanna shout for me to hurry up. I quickly put on my hunting boots and rush downstairs.
"That's what you're wearing?" Johanna asks when I reach the bottom of the staircase. "Seriously?"
"What's wrong with this?" I look down at my brown jeans, black shirt, and brown sweater. "It's cozy."
"We are going to go see Peeta. You don't want to look more presentable?"
"You're wearing sweats," I remind her.
"I'm not the one dating Peeta."
Then Prim comes running down the stairs. Her hair is in curls, white shoes on, and a yellow sundress on. She looks pretty as can be. She runs right pass us and out the door.
"See," Johanna says then pointsing in the direction of the door. "That is presentable."
"Let's just go."
…
"So, how is everything with you, Johanna?" I ask her as we make our walk to the bakery.
"Good."
"That's it?"
Johanna raises an eyebrow while nodding. "Why?"
Is she serious right now? Within a month, Johanna goes from not speaking to half of her friends to becoming friends with the Careers and now, suddenly, she is speaking to everyone again, other than Cashmere and Gloss. Then again, when it comes to Cashmere and Gloss, they're kind of a package deal.
"Are we just going to ignore the elephant in the room?"
Johanna sighs. "Katniss, I'd rather not."
"I don't understand, Johanna. You forgave Gale, why not—"
"You wanna know why I always knew everything about Peeta? More than Glimmer knew?"
"Ummm," I reply, taking taken back by the sudden change of topic. "Because you're his best friend."
"I am but that's not why. Because he trusted me the most and that wasn't a good thing. Peeta would have rather told me anything before he would tell Glimmer and I was the same way with Peeta and Gale. That's why Glimmer didn't like me and I'm guessing that's why Gale didn't like Peeta."
"How do you know that's the reason?"
"Now that I'm friends with Clove, that means I'm friends with Glimmer. They are kind of a package deal. So Glimmer and I talked about everything that happened and why we hated each other so much. And I don't want that to happen to us."
I stop dead in my tracks at her words as does Johanna does too.
"Johanna," I say. "That isn't going to happen—"
"You don't know that," Johanna interrupts. "Can you honestly tell me you were never once jealous of me and Peeta?"
I'm about to tell her I've never been jealous of them two, but then I realize that isn't true. The first day I met Peeta he had his arm around Johanna and it bothered me. I didn't even really know Peeta back then and yet I was already jealous. My first night out with the victors was the night we all went to the movies and all I could focus on was how much chemistry I saw between Johanna and Peeta. 756383
"I think your silence says it all," Johanna says.
I shake my head. "No. That was before I really knew the two of you."
"Still," Johanna says. "You should be the one Peeta can trust the most, not me. Not anymore."
"Jo, where is this coming from?"
She sighs. "He's upset. It's not obvious, but I know he is. I don't want to see him upset but I can't be the one to fix everything. You need to find out what's wrong. As girlfriend, that's your job."
"As the best friend, what's your job?" I ask softly.
"Not to ruin another one of his relationships." With thathatt, Johanna continues to walk down the street. After a moment, I follow behind her with half a smile on my face.
Although I appreciate Johanna trying to help, I don't want to become Johanna's replacement.
When we arrive at the bakery the place is filled with heat. Peeta stands behind the counter with sweat on his forehead, sleeves around up, and a platter of cookies in front of him as he ices them.
"Damn, It's it's hot as hell in here," Johanna says and I couldn't agree more. "How have you not had a heat stroke yet, Peeta?"
"Used to the heat I guess," Peeta mumbles. "Hey, Katniss."
"Hi," "I say while stepping behind the counter to kiss his cheek. "Need any help?"
"Yeah. Can you take the tray of cookies out of the oven? Be careful."
I grab the pair of oven-mitts next to the stove. The second I open the oven, I can smell the chocolate chips from the cookies. They're a perfect golden brown. I carefully place the tray on top of the stove.
"What time do you need to be at the carnival?" Johanna asks Peeta.
"Not for a while," He says. "Which is good because I still have a million things to do. I need to put at least two more batches of cookies into the oven, need to frost three cakes, cut the brownies, wrap everything up, and clean up before I head out. That reminds me! I need to find the cash box in the back," Peeta says, while rushing out the back door.
"Wow," I say. "He's a bit stressed."
Johanna nods in argument. "He could sure use a break."
Peeta then comes rushing in with a metal box he shoves underneath the counter.
"Peeta," Johanna says. "Why don't you take a break? Go on a walk or something."
"I can't," He says. "I still need more cookies, the brownies, the cakes—"
"And I can prepare the trays of cookies, cut the brownies, start wrapping and start cleaning," Johanna says. "I can also do the base of the cakes but just nothing fancy."
"That's nice Jo, but—"
"Peeta," I interrupt him. "What time did you get up today?"
"Nine am."
"And it's already one," I remind him. "You need a break. Let Johanna take care of some stuff and me and you can go for a walk in the woods. We'll be back in an hour. Okay?"
Peeta nods.
I kiss his forehead that's covered with flour and then help him take of his apron. I toss it to Johanna and she proudly puts it on.
"Have fun you two," Johanna shouts as we leave the bakery hand in hand.
…
"Why are you even helping out with the carnival anyways?" I ask as we go under the fence into the woods.
"I wasn't planning on it," Peeta says. "Annie kind of guilt-ed me into it. Plus, great business for the bakery."
Peeta works so hard for the bakery. Sometimes, I don't know if it's because he wants to or because he feels like he's supposed to. When he talks about baking his voice has happiness to it, but when he speaks of the bakery, I don't often hear the same happiness.
"So you'll be there all day?"
"Probably," Peeta mutters. "But it's cool. Cash promised she'd have someone helping me."
"Why aren't your parents helping you?"
Peeta bites his bottom lip and right away I know he's avoiding a frown.
"Umm, well someone has to keep the place open. It's not only a one man job."
"With Delly gone then, will you be hiring new help soon?" I ask.
"…Guess so."
It's when we reach the pond that I can now see the sadness Peeta has that Johanna was talking about earlier. Delly is the reason he's upset but it's not just about Delly. There's more to the reason.
"Is Dell the reason you're so upset? You miss her?"
Peeta doesn't say anything. He looks at me with his sad blue eyes and I know he's saying yes. Then he looks away.
I sit down near the edge of the pond. Peeta takes a seat right next to me but he doesn't look at me. He stares into the water and sighs.
"Not talking about it doesn't help anyone," I say gently. He sighs again.
"Delly was always so full of smiles but I know she wasn't fully happy here," He tells me. "But I still wanted her to stay here. Before Delly came to live with us, I felt alone in my house. My brothers never visit and my mom is…my dad was the only one I had, but even I couldn't even talke to him about what was really going on. I hated living in that house but then Delly came along. It wasn't just a house anymore, it was home. I finally started to look forward to going home, to spending time with my family, to have dinner, to do something at home other than baking and painting. Delly has only been gone a few days and already that's all gone. I hate myself for neglecting her when she was here and I hate myself for wanting her to come back where she was unhappy."
Peeta's eyes then become watery. He's truly upset and the worst part is he feels guilty for feeling that way.
"It's okay to miss her," I tell him. "I miss her too. You didn't neglect her. You both had your own lives and there's nothing wrong with that. It doesn't mean you didn't love her and I know she loved you. I'm sure Delly is missing you as much as you're missing her. Just because Delly is gone doesn't mean you're alone. You have your friends and you have me. Now that I know about your mom, you can tell me anything. You can trust me with anything."
Peeta slides closer to me and then talkes my hand. "Thank you, Katniss."
Johanna told me it was my job to fix everything for Peeta, but I don't think I agree. I can't fix everything for Peeta and he can't fix everything for me. I can sure make him feel better and help make us happy. That gives me an idea that is sure to make Peeta happy.
"Since everyone already knows about us, I think it's time we tell my mother," I say with a smile. "Will you have dinner with us?"
Peeta smiles. "Of course."
I lean forward and give Peeta a kiss.
"We should go back," Peeta says while pulling away. "You know, before Jo burns the place to the ground."
I wouldn't be surprised if she did.
We head back to the bakery hand in hand.
…
Annie's POV
I've been at school since noon and it is now five o'clock, —only one more hour until the carnival starts. In other words, after five hours of putting up with Cash's orders, there's only one more hour left. Thank the lord.
Now I'm not sure why beating the dance team is so important to Cash, but I do know she'll lose her mind if she doesn't beat them.
I'm setting up one of the many kissing booths Cash has ordered when she orders me to help Peeta set up his section. I run off to the street to find Peeta, Katniss, and to my surprise, Johanna all coming out of Gloss' car.
"Johanna," I say in shock. "Didn't think you'd come by."
She simply shrugs and goes to trunk of the car. Isn't that a nice hello?
"Peeta, Katniss, Gloss! Nice to see you guys," I say.
Peeta and Katniss both give me a hug and Gloss honks the horn as a hello.
"I got about a dozen baskets of baked goods in the trunk that need to be carried," Peeta tells me. "But be careful, they're hot."
I nod and grab two baskets from the car. The sweet smell is so strong that I can feel my mouth water.
"Gloss," I shout. "Cash needs you asapASAP to practice, so park the car and get your ass in out of the parking lout and find her." With that, I lead Peeta, Katniss, and Jo to Peeta's section in the parking lot.
I was in charge of mapping out every section of the Carnival, so of course I gave Peeta a great spot. Peeta's stand has a shade which falls from the small Ferris wheel not to far from him, and when it gets dark, the stand will shine with the red lights the Ferris wheel has. In front of Peeta's stand is a big open space for the audience, then it's the stage. The stage where Gloss will be standing in front of a band and people will be paying money for requests. So many people will be crowded around to see the quarterback on stage, and Peeta will get all their business and the squad gets twenty percent of his total profits.
After setting down the baskets we brought, Jo, Peeta, and Katniss go back to car to pick up the rest while I stand guard at the stand.
As I watch them leave, I still can't believe that Johanna is actually here. The carnival is all of Cashmere's doing and the last thing Johanna wants to do is be involved with Cashmere. Johanna is still upset about what Cash did and I understand completely. I was furious when I found out about her and Gale. How could she do that to Johanna and then lie about it everydayevery day. ? How could someone be that horrible to their friend? But then again, everyone makes bad choices. I'm not angry at Cash anymore but it doesn't matter if I am. Johanna is all that matters. I hope she can find it in her heart to forgive her like she did with Gale.
"Cresta!" I hear Cato shouting from afar. He's running towards me with his cellphone in one hand and his car keys in the others.
"Cato, how did you get in here?" I ask.
"It's a parking lot," Cato reminds me. "How do you think? I walked in."
I roll my eyes. "What do you want?"
"I got your sister on speaker phone," He says and holds the phone closer to me.
"Grace?" I ask a bit confused as to why my sister called Cato instead of me.
"Annie Cresta! If you aren't going to answer your phone/ then why do you have one?!" My sister shouts so loud that she didn't have to be on speaker for me to hear that.
"Sorry, I wasn't—
"Whatever," Grace interrupts me. "I want to talk to you and my future brother-in-law about the wedding fittings."
Cato and I both groan.
I love my sister to death, but she is the biggest bride-zilla ever.
"Grace," I say sweetly. "I'm kind of busy right now. Can this wait?"
"As the maid of honor and the best man, the wedding should always come first."
Cato rolls his eyes so hard. "Okay, when is it?"
"Two weeks from today."
"What?!" Cato and I say in unison.
"That's homecoming," I tell her.
"The wedding comes first," Grace hisses.
Cato looks like he is about ready to pull his hair out.
I sigh. "We'll be there, Grace. Together."
Cato hangs up.
"What does my brother see in your sister," ?" Cato says asks putting his cell away.
"You know, normally I would defend my sister, but God is she a monster when it comes to her wedding," I say truthfully.
Cato smiles. "Good to know you see it too."
Cato smiled. He actually smiled at me. He smiles smiled because of me. We've been living under the same roof for a week and I think that's the first time I've seen him smile. I can't help but smile too.
"So, what are we going to do about homecoming?" I ask.
"I'm sure Odair will understand if you're a little late, and it's not like I have anyone to go with, so."
I can hear the sadness in his voice. Cato misses her. He misses Clove.
"You know the dance team is bound to make an appearance tonight," I say. "You should stick around."
"I doubt she'd wanna see me. Not after last night."
"Maybe you shouldn't give up."
Cato gives me a strange look. "I thought you were Gloss' friend?"
Even though we live together now, Cato and I still don't talk much. We barely even see each other if it isn't necessary. But when I do see him, all I see how empty he is without Clove in his life. Yeah he might have gone on dates, but after every date he'd come home alone and sit on the couch in silence with a depressed look on his face. Cato needs Clove around again to put that smile on his face. As for Gloss, with or without Clove, he'll find some happiness out there.
I shrug.
Katniss, Peeta, and Johanna come back with the rest of the baskets and then Cato leaves without another word.
"What was he doing here?" Johanna asks me.
"Just some family stuff," I say and it sure does feel odd calling Cato family.
I leave them to organize the stand and run off to find Cash. With only half an hour before opening, I need to make sure everything is taken care of. I find Cash near the entrance of the parking lot on her cell phone. She seems to be having a freak out. After another minute, she hangs up and groans.
"What's wrong?" I ask her.
"Gloss is going to be late," Cash says. "Which means there is no singer for the band, which means we lose money. Fucking shit! I'm going to kill Gloss."
An idea pops right into my mind. "Katniss," I say. "She came with Peeta. She has a killer voice. Ask her."
"Annie, you're brilliant!" She shouts. "Stand guard here. Don't let anyone in until six." With that, she runs off.
Within a few minutes, a huge line starts to form in front of the entrance. Honestly, I wasn't expecting the carnival to be a success but maybe it will be now. So many seniors and underclassmen are in the line with family, as well. As soon as the clock hits six, I let everyone in and the parking lot fills up. So many people are running around it'sits insane, to be honest.
Then, I see Finnick coming in with some dance members right behind me. The moment he sees me, Finnick runs to me with his arms wide. I stretch my arms out for a big huge and he doesn't disappoint.
"No interacting with the enemies, Finnick." Amber says jokingly from behind us. "Even if she is your girlfriend."
Finnick rolls his eyes and then gives me a kiss on the lips.
"What do we have here?" I hear Cashmere asks from the other side of me.
Finnick and I both pull away but keep our arms wrapped around one another.
"Come to check out the competition?" Cash continues with.
"No," Amber says. "The squad and I wanted to do some bonding."
"What's the point of this competition anyways?" Finnick whispers to me.
"Whoever raises the most money gets to pick the order of the performances at pep rally," Cashmere says before I can.
"Every group to performance is in on this competition, but let's be honest— the band geeks, flag and stick people are no competition," Amber says. "That leaves us; the dance team and the bimbos."
The tension between Amber and Cash is high. Cashmere can't stand Amber and that may have something to do with the fact that Amber plans to run for homecoming queen or maybe it's because the dance team and cheerleading squad have never liked one another. Either way, the feeling is mutual. I just can't wait for next year. O: our senior year with Glimmer as cheer captain and her best friend Clove as dance team captain. There will be no drama there.
"Well," Cashmere says ignoring what Amber says. "There's living live music and dancing near the Ferris wheel. I'm sure you'll all love that spot."
Amber flashes a smile before walking away with her team following behind. Clove comes and takes Finnick by the hand.
"Sorry," She tells me. "Amber will kill him Finnick if he doesn't come."
Finnick gives me one last kiss before running off with Clove. I can't help but hate the sight.
…
I am going to kill Cashmere. Glimmer and a dozen other cheerleaders were assigned to work the kissing booth. I wasn't. What the hell am I doing here?! Glimmer told me she would just be a minute 'cause she had to use the restroom. An hour later and I've kissed fifteen guys each for one dollar. I feel cheap.
"Annie," Megan, a fellow cheerleader at the other kissing booth next to me, says. "Why don't you just leave? You look miserable."
"The kissing booth is a huge money maker," I say. Glimmer earned forty dollars while here. "You and I both know Cashmere will lose her mind if we don't win."
Megan sighs.
Suddenly, I hear laughter coming towards me. And there's Gloss laughing his ass off at me.
"Wow," He says between a laughs. "Annie Cresta at a kissing booth? God really does exist."
"Hush, Gloss." I say. It's nicer then saying 'shut the fuck up'.
"Here to pay, Gloss?" Megan asks somewhat flirt-ily.
"Nah," He says. "I'm more here to making fun of Annie."
"Why are you my best friend again?" I ask.
"Oh, you love me!"
A few guys start to make a line in front of me again. Gloss glares at them and they rush over to Megan's booth. And that's why Gloss is my best friend.
"What are you doing here anyways?" I ask.
"Saving you from kissing a bunch of losers. Obviously!" Gloss says with a smile.
"Shouldn't you be on stage singing your heart out?"
"Katniss has it covered. The girl can really sing. Man, you should see the dance team out there. There They are amazing!"
"Don't let Cash here you say that. She'll kill you in your sleep," I say jokingly.
"You should go check it out," Gloss suggests. "I'm sure you'll find seeing Finnick a turn on." He wiggles his eyebrows at me.
If I leave the booth, Cash will murder me.
"Can you stay here at the booth? I'll be back in thirty minutes, tops."
Gloss agrees to watch the booth for me while I go find Finnick.
I follow the song of the music all the way to the stage. I see Katniss on stage with the microphone walking around the stage. She is smiling ear to ear as everyone cheers for her singing. Then I see Finnick dancing with Clove in the crowd. Finnick's hands are around her waist and Clove's hands are around his neck. They've seem to have made up.
"I love this song," Finnick tells me then turns to Clove. "Wanna dance again?"
Okay, that hurt. It's like I'm not even here.
"I'll dance with you, Finn." I say.
"After this song, Ann," Finnick says. "This is a dancer's song." Clove nods to at his words.
"It's just a song," I remind them. "I can dance."
"Yeah," Clove says. "But can you say do this?"
Then Clove moves her hips. Only her hips and it's fucking hypnotizing. God, is she even real right now?
"I guess I'll just wait for the next song." With that that, I go over to Peeta's stand.
Peeta is sitting with Johanna but as soon as Johanna sees me, she makes an excuse to leave.
I take a seat with Peeta while Johanna walks away.
"Annie, are you okay?"
I force a smile. "Yeah."
"Annie." Peeta then takes a hold of hand and asks me again. "Are you okay?"
I sigh and shake my head.
"Johanna isn't talking to me," I say. "Not really anyways. It'sIts Cato's home, not mine. Even though Finnick and I are back together…it's not the same between us anymore. I just feel kind of…"
"Out of place?"
I nod and Peeta squeezes my hand.
"It's okay," He tells me. "I feel the same way."
Part 2 of the carnival coming up! Peeta's POV :D Anyone want to read Katniss to sing a certain song? Let me know!
