Hey guys, here's the next chapter. Thanks again for not loosing faith in this story!
Emily/Five POV
Monday came quicker than usual.
I still haven't spoken to Kate. The information she kept from me was… I can't, it's just too betraying. I can't believe she'd keep something like this from me. After she mentioned those shocking few words I simply stood up and walked into my room, slamming it shut. My heart was broken. My trust slowly disintegrating as I continually replay the scene in my head. Some where out there in Lorien my brother is there, probably with some foster parents… or not, maybe he's dead, maybe he died shortly after our birth.
I can't help sob.
I have a brother.
"I have a twin brother"
"Oh shit, I have a brother!" I muttering quite loudly to myself as I exit the front door, ready to get to school. Kate's been trying to reach out, but I turn away each time. I will admit, I feel guilty – my parents did tell her to keep it a secret, it's them I should be angry at, but I can't help it. Kate and I had a very close bond, it's just now, I think it's starting to erode.
"Emily, wait!"
But I'm already half way down the block, in the fresh morning air, which seems stale to me, as Kate runs out of the house, trying to grab my attention. I sob quietly as I head in the direction of the school. I can faintly hear her cry. I hate making her cry, the guilt throbbing in my chest increases tenfold. I'm tempted to turn around and run back into Kate's arms, like a scared child, but no.
Soon tears are slowly plummeting their way down my cheeks. Tears for my stupid anger issues, tears for the shock and betrayal I felt and tears for my lost baby brother. Baby twin brother. Yes, I was told I was eleven minutes older than him. I continue to feel sorry for myself and feel like crap until I reach the school gates – I wipe away my tears, not wanting to drag any more attention to myself; this cheerleader uniform does that just fine. Plus Britney's probably told the whole school, or more importantly the Elder's children that my house was trashed… Kate's house was trashed.
But I do have to admit, I feel pretty amazing in this uniform.
"Hey there Em" the voice of none other than Britney comes into view. I grin, the look on her face just says it all.
"How's the… you know" she says discretely. I raise an eyebrow,
"The tra-"
"I know what you're talking about, it's just that, haven't you told everyone by now?" I question anger seemingly steaming off me, Britney puts a mock-hurt expression on, I try to resist smirking as my anger disappears,
"Oh, I would neve-okay well I didn't tell anyone because you're my friend, and I respect that, plus it kinda creeped me out" she answers, walking along with me. I laugh, heading in the direction of Stan who I see in the distance. He's laughing along with Joe, Marina and John. Maren must not be at school yet. But the next few moments are what really slaps me in the face. A girl, about a few inches taller than me speed walks past me, and jumps into Stan's arms. Guilt, anger, betrayal and broken trust is the many things I woke up with; jealousy and confusion is another few things I can add to that list. I can tell Britney's about to ask the question; who is she?
"Who is she?" I resist the urge to smirk. Stan is hugging her back, like a long lost friend… or crush – let's just stick to friend. The girl is well… pretty. Long dark hair, beach tanned toned, full lips and flawless skin; Britney's probably jealous of that skin.
"I have no clue" I grit back. I can't help but not realise when my fist closes around my pencil case, cracking the sides. Or the feeling of jealousy rising in the pit of my stomach. Britney breaks the tension,
"She's got nice skin"
John/Four POV
"-So it was great seeing him, met up with Dad there, it was fun" Stan says, summing up his weekend. To be honest his Sunday sounded a lot better than mine.
"That's awesome bro, I'm happy for you" Joe says, wrapping his arm around Marina as she slides in next to him. She smiles happily. I grin at the pair; they're really nice for each other, which gets me thinking. Maren. Ever since our little friendship, before high school life was simple, we would have play dates at each other's houses it was fun. But now I just want a date. I've been seeing Maren more as something more than a friend; it's weird, seeing your long time best friend from the first time she pushed you into the sandbox in kindergarten grow up and be attracted to her. It's just… I don't wanna stuff it up.
"So John what did you do on Sunday?" Marina asks, lacing Joe's fingers with hers. I shrug,
"Eh, not much, Brandon had me train harder, since my Lumen came, apparently TK supposed to be coming not far after" I muse, Marina nods. She's already developed Telekinesis. Before anyone can reply a different voice breaks the conversation,
"Stanley!" the girl's voice exclaims, running up to the surprised Number Nine. The girl throws her arms around him and hugs him. It takes a minute for him to register and hugs back, pulling away, his expression changed from surprised to shocked.
"Maddy?" he whispers in shock. She giggles and nods. The girl is pretty. Joe and Marina seem amused by the scene.
"Wha-how-whe-"
"I got here on Saturday, my dad got a job over near the LDA, we moved, and I enrolled here!" she says. Stan seems to snap out of his trance and hugs her again, swinging her around. She laughs.
I can tell these two have had a history. I here Joe clear his throat from beside them, Marina elbows him playfully. They don't here it.
He does it again. Stan looks to him and flushes with embarrassment. Maddy looks over and shares the same expression.
"Oh, I'm sorry, guys this is Maddy, Maddy this is Joe, Marina and John"
Did he really just say, 'Oh I'm sorry'? I can't help but smirk at Stan's discomfortable look when he meets my expression.
"Hi, sorry to um, barge in like that" she says, looking a little flustered.
"It's okay, how do you and Stan know each other?" Marina asks, a curious look overcoming her eyes,
"Um, back in the Countryside, Stan and I used to hang out with each other, that was until he moved here for school" she says, a little sad at the end. I smile at the pair, but something in the corner of my eye draws my attention.
There she is. Emily, Number Five. With Britney, staring at Stan and Maddy. Emily's eyes centred on the intertwined fingers of the duo and the faintest look of hurt and jealousy written across her face. That's when the uncomfortable feeling comes. Joe seems to notice this ands mouths 'tell you later' to Emily, that seems to reassure her, but something flashes through her eyes before turning around and walking to her locker.
I do have to admit, I feel a little bit sorry for Emily. Brandon told me what happened to her house… her Cepan's house. And she looks rather sad today, even before she saw Maddy and Stan.
Relationships. Ugh.
"Where's Maren?" Marina speaks up, Stan and Maddy are in their own conversation, Stan insisted on showing Maddy to her locker and classes. I guess the less Stan stupidity would be a good change for today; a little less loud. Don't get me wrong, I love Stan, he's like my brother, his comments keep you on the ball always.
"Um, why should I know?"
"Because you're practically drooling over her whenever she's here. Wouldn't be surprised if you were at her house" Joe muses, Marina rolls her eyes,
"But I do know where she lives" Joe dramatically hangs his mouth open,
"Oh no, he's in too deep and he can't pull out"
"Very interesting choice of words Joe" Britney says, coming into the conversation. I'm a bit surprised, but after our, 'bonding' session, we're closer than before. Marina smirks and Joe just flat out laughs, the rest of us joining in.
"Hey Brit" I say, smiling at Joe's sobered up expression.
"What's up with the new girl?" she asks,
"Oh don't tell me you have eyes for Stan too-"
"No! I'm here for Em" she reassures, Joe nods,
"Her names Maddy, she's a friend from Stan's childhood, they're best buddies" he says, playing with Marina's hair, she tries to act serious but I can see she likes it.
"Are they, you know…" she makes a gesture.
"Maybe"
"Ew"
"We met her like 5 minutes ago"
"Okay, okay, jeez, just needed a 'I don't know'" she raises her hands in mock-defence. A smirk still playing on her lips.
"Well I'd best be going, ya know, cheerleader stuff… oh and don't forget, Early Year Party is on this weekend, tell Miss Elizabeth as well" Britney says, before skipping off to her cheerleader friends and a depressed looking Emily.
"This is going to be interesting"
"What is?" Marina asks, looking to her boyfriend,
"The Emily likes Stan, Stan likes Emily thing, it's gonna take a big turn; Maddy likes Stan, Stan likes Maddy, but likes Emily as well, Emily likes Stan, but dislikes Maddy, Maddy will soon feel the same way-"
"Okay, remind me not to ask again" she playfully says, Joe puts on an expression of mock-hurt, earning a kiss from his girlfriend. I smile, but definitely feel a little too uncomfortable for the second time in ten minutes. Then they start to get heated. That's my Que.
"Oh Lore" is all I can say before walking off and leaving the two to their own thing.
Maren/Six POV
This morning didn't feel so good. Waking up was terrible, if I knew what a hangover was, it definitely felt like this. I groan loudly, shifting in my bed, aching from the extraneous work Katarina had me do on Sunday. She wanted me to be ready for my first Legacy. I do have to admit, I'm kind of jealous of the rest, Stan, Joe, Marina, John, Britney, Hannu and Emily. They've all developed their first Legacy, Marina has even got her Telekinesis! But I'm the only Elder, besides Maggie of course (but she's quite young), who hasn't received their first. Katarina keeps telling me, it'll take time, that sometimes they just delay slightly – what delays a Legacy? Seriously.
I glance groggily to the alarm clock through my sleep filled eyes.
9:04am.
I'd slept in, a little too long, I'm late for school.
"Oh shit!" I mutter, bounding out of bed, almost getting slightly nauseous, the pounding headache becoming greater with each pulse. The smell of fresh bacon filling my nostrils; Katarina must be cooking breakfast, speaking of Katarina, why didn't she wake me up? I'm quite late for school, unless she wanted me to stay home. Staying home does seem like a good option right now, but it's the second week of school, I can't miss too many days – besides, things are gonna be different at school. Reaching for the bathroom door, I pause. Something is missing from this scene. Looking down I shriek.
My hand.
It's gone.
I scream, as loud as I can, because you know – what happens when you loose your hand? you shout like a maniac. I hear quick footsteps behind my bedroom door, I'm still screaming, clutching my missing hand. so many thoughts running through my head,
"Maren?! Six, honey?! What is it?" Katarina's voice enters my frantic mindset.
"My hand! It's gone! It's-"
"Okay, just relax, I'm sure there's a reasonable explanation for this"
"What do you mean there's a reasonable explanation for this?! My hand is gone!" I shout back.
"Maren! Listen to me, just calm down" Katarina says, slowly opening the door. I take a deep breath and slowly exhale, looking at my hand. Taking a few more deep breaths I feel the thudding of my heart, the adrenaline already pumping through my veins.
I shudder slightly when I look at it, but soon become fascinated. There's nothing where my hand is supposed to be, my wrist is slightly opaque, a milky olive toned tinge. But the colour soon returns to my forearm. I instinctively walk to the bathroom door again and reach for the door knob, and twist when I feel like I've gripped it. To my amazement the knob twists and the door slowly swings open. I grip a towel, holding it from my 'missing' hand.
"Six?! What's-" Katarina's voice stops as she sees what's happening, coming into the bathroom.
"What's going on with me?"
"Six… you've developed a new Legacy" she whispers, still in awe. I'm too shocked to register what's happening. But a smile merges it's way onto my lips.
"What is it? What's it called?" I ask, still holding the dry towel, feeling the softness of the fibres on my 'missing' hand.
"Invisibility. You can turn invisible"
Adam POV
Making my way to Biology, I can't help but smile. Students file in and out through the hallways, noise drowning the bell as it rings to signal class.
I quickly scoot into my allocated classroom, taking a seat at the nearest desk. Our teacher isn't here yet, he always arrives five to ten minutes late when we have Biology first period. I sigh, taking out my books and opening up to a random page in the textbook. To be honest, I sometimes read this during my spare time, it's very fascinating; the biologies of various animals on Lorien, the Legacies, the flora – how different Legacies work.
For an example, Accelerated Healing, or Healing Factor – we learn how the cells regenerate themselves, same for the Legacy of Duplication, we learn how the body duplicate itself under the Garde's will. It's amazing. Makes my kinda wish that I had Legacies, or even the intellect of a Cepan, scrap that, I just want to be Loric or just live here; like Sam and Malcolm.
"Hey there stranger" a girl's voice says, sitting herself down next to me. I'm surprised, no one usually sits next to me, especially this girl. Britney. My heart beats slightly faster. Her blonde hair is pulled back to the regular cheerleader hairstyle. Her uniform looks newly ironed and her amazing turquoise-blue eyes glisten in the morning light.
"Uh, hey, how are you?" I ask awkwardly. She grins, unpacking her books. Maggie Hoyle has rubbed off on her. I smirk. I would be lying if I said I didn't like her a bit; most people would, Britney is one of the more tamed cheerleaders and other than that, she's beautiful.
"Ugh, okay, I guess, just too much drama" she exaggeratedly says, throwing her hands up. I chuckle. But a different feeling over comes me as I stare into those piercing blue eyes. She looks around the board before her eyes gleam,
"Oh, I forgot to give this to you-" she says handing me an envelope. I'm slightly confused,
"-It's an invitation to my Early Year Party" she smiles, my eyebrows go up. I've never been invited to a party before; well schools on Mogadore didn't really do the wanders of parties anyway. She laughs at my surprised expression.
"Th-thanks"
"Hey, you're a nice guy Adam, it'd be great if you could come" she says, drawing randomly on her page. A silence comes between us, I'm flattered, I can't believe this girl invited me to her party! Imagine if Ivanick could see me now, or Kelly for that matter.
"Hey, why did you sit next to me?"
She looks to me, I expect her to be offended but she simply gives a questioning look, the same playful expression on her face,
"I mean, your cheerleader friends are over there, so why sit with me here?" I ask carefully, hopefully not ruining the friendship (are we friends?) that we have. I'm very nervous as the words coming out of her mouth.
"Because you're my friend silly, and besides, you're good company Adam" she muses, doodling with her pen. I try to suppress the grin forming and sit up straight as the teacher walks in. The thick smell of cigarette smoke coming off him. No doubt he was smoking outside class before this. But I can't thinking of anything else besides what Britney said.
From then on, the stupid grinning expression on my face did not get wiped off.
