Clockwork's End
-Chapter six-
"KEVIN!" Eddward kept yelling for him he felt his voice starting to get raspy. It had been a good 10 minutes but still no sign of Kevin. Nazz stood by the door fidgeting as she tried to remain calm but no one could stay calm.
"K-Kevin….please" Eddward fell into himself wrapping his entire body around a still clinging Reade. Reade looked up at the man holding him and turned his head out pulling out of the grip. He escaped and ran to the edge of the gas getting as close as he could without touching it.
"KEVIN!" Eddward sat there frozen watching the little boy call out for the man who crept into his heart. Over and over he called for him his little voice echoing in the large house. Everyone gasped when they saw dark figures stalk up. Winston came out first holding an unconscious May in his arms behind him Kevin stepped forward picking up Reade in his arms, giving him a squeeze. He let out a breathe he walked forward seeing everyone stunned.
"Thanks little man and you too Dork if it wasn't for you two we would have been lost in the smoke for much longer." Reade eyes started to water but he bite his lip to stop the tears. He never cried never.
"Hey come on Reade its ok. It's ok to cry there's nothing wrong with it." He held Reade up tilting his head up to look at him Kevin smiled gently at him. Reade looked down at him tears landing on Kevin's face. Suddenly everyone in the room began to cry. They all threw themselves at him except Eddy and Eddward. Kevin nearly fell from the force of the mob attack.
"*Ifreann Na Fola guys I'm not dead geez" Kevin held onto Reade above his head to make sure no one crushed him. Reade gave out a squeak when Kevin lifted him, he looked over at Eddward and tapped Kevin's arm. Kevin looked up at the boy and saw him pointing at the dork with a worried expression. He shook everyone off and walked over to the dork. He just sat there cyan eyes wide and glassy.
Kevin placed Reade next to the slighter male he lifted a hand hesitant at first then gently began to caress his cheek. He slid his rough fingers to Eddward's chin lifting it his eyes stayed unchanged, afraid numb. Kevin lowered kissing his forehead then his cheek and finally kissed his lips, a slight peck. Eddward's lips cold against Kevin's warm ones. Eddward felt Kevin pull away and he grabbed onto his collar pulling him down again. He kissed him hungrily tangling his fingers into his dark orange hair. Kevin jolted at the sudden action but quickly melded into the kiss. Eddward slid his tongue on Kevin's bottom lip and Kevin gladly let him in. Tongues dancing with each other, Eddward bit the other males lip sending shivers down his spin. Silent tears started slipping from Eddward's closed eyes. He was scarred he had almost lost two people in the span of a few days one his longtime friend and the other…..the other was a man he now knew he had fallen in love with.
Eddward pulled back placing his forehead onto Kevin's his eyes still closed. When he opened them bright green eyes were there to meet his cyan ones. Kevin smiled gently smoothing out his hair. Running his thumb over Eddward's lips.
"You have been nothing but trouble since you got here" Eddward stuttered tracing Kevin's lips with his fingers.
"Sorry I'm like a magnet for the stuff." He chuckled sitting next to him, both men had forgotten the rest of the group was in the room. Reade crawled back onto Eddward's lap wishing not to be ignored. He tugged on Eddward's collar pouting at him eyebrows low over his eyes. Kevin laughed patting the kid on the head.
"Bu-but I thought…" Eddy stumbled over the words. Eddward looked around realizing what just happened. Oh dear did he just kiss Kevin, like that, in a public setting? Oh dear oh dear oh dear.
Kevin slightly blushed turned to a very red dork next to him. God he was cute. He turned back to see everyone was in awe except Nazz, she was smiling Kevin didn't know she could smile that big.
"You thought what Ed-head?" Kevin propped himself on his elbows. He was exhausted from the romance to the fighting to the emotions, he just wanted to sleep. Eddy blushed and scratched his head.
"I thought you were with….Nazz" He uttered quickly saying Nazz's name. He looked down hooking his pointer fingers together as if they didn't know what he meant when he said they were together. Both Kevin and Nazz burst out laughing. Kevin throwing his head back and Nazz slapping a palm to her forehead.
"Like….hahaha I…..would date that Neanderthal!" She was bending over holding her sides trying to catch her breath.
"Dude I'm not crazy enough to mess with all of that" Kevin spit out letting another howling laugh escape his lips. Eddward sat there staring at him.
"Ahem anyway the gas has cleared we should check the damage Edd." Eddward snapped his head toward his brother. Oh dear! He wanted to get a sample of the gas. He had assessed that it wasn't poisonous merely from the fact that they were all still alive but he still wanted to test it and break it down. Now he had missed the opportunity. He sighed dipping his head down hair sliding covering his face slightly, he felt a slight headache forming. He closed his eyes massaging his temples he let another sigh out and opened his eyes only to see a tube with a cork in his line of vision. The gas inside was thick and grey slowly floating he followed the hand that held it.
"A dork like you might have wanted to test the stuff out so ya know plus Winston caries the stuff around! You got good help." He smiled handing him the tube lying back down on his elbows again. Edd wanted to kiss him again it took everything he had to restrain himself.
"We need to find the brothers if they are behind this then we need to deal with them." Eddy said.
"Reade where can we find these assholes" At the curse Eddward covered the child's ears. Eyes flaring with anger aimed towards his friend.
"Eddy I swear, curse in the presence of my boy one more time and so help me God I will end you!" He growled at him feeling Reade's little hands grab onto his own.
"There's an abandoned building where they have been staying, I've seen them go in and out a lot." His voice raised since his ears were blocked, his large eyes staring at Kevin.
"How come? Do you play near there?" Eddy asked Reade's ears now free. He climbed off Eddward's lap and sat between them.
"No I sleep near there" Reade was playing with the hem of Kevin's shirt not really caring that he was in fact homeless. Eddward's heart tightened it hurt thinking how long this boy had suffered. Everyone fell silent.
"You don't have to worry about that from now on you'll sleep on a bed." Eddward wrapped his arms around the boy silently promising that he would never let go.
"Okay so where is this place?" Jim asked smiling at Reade his potential future nephew.
"I don't know the streets I have to show you myself" His eyes fell heavy and he let out a small yawn. He must have been tired poor kid Kevin picked him up and Reade laid his head on his shoulder. Eddward got up and patted his head.
"We can discuss this tomorrow, Reade needs his sleep." Kevin and Eddward left together upstairs. Kevin went to find another undershirt and Eddward bathed Reade. He warmed the bath letting the water warm the child's cold skin. Kevin came in smiling at the scene before him he help the dork wash his hair and rinse him. Eddward sat on the padded chair in the bathroom with a towel wrapped Reade on his lap. Kevin grabbed a smaller towel and rubbed it all over the kid's head. Once clean and changed they tucked him in and left the room. Eddward grabbed onto Kevin's hand and led him into his room.
Kevin looked around, his room was bare except for a shelf of books that covered an entire wall. His bed was adorned with white covers at the center of the room next to it on the left was a wardrobe. Eddward opened it and took a clean shirt from it. Kevin saw inside and a flat cap was hanging on the back of the wardrobe. It was black with two white stripes painted on each side.
"What's with the cap dork?" Kevin pointed at it gaining Edd's attention. His eyes were filled with nostalgia and a hint of pain.
"My…my mother she knew of my self-consciousness about the white in my hair. So she gave me the cap after painting the strips" he sighed picking the hat up " She told me that I should not be ashamed it made me dashing but if you so wish then here so that you can get used to seeing white on your head." Eddward hung the hat back after kissing it lightly.
"They died my parents in an automobile accident….the most brilliant minds in the world…in an automobile accident." His eyes closed tightly as he remembered the pain of hearing the news the pain of telling Jim. Then the years that passed only made the pain livable but it never went away.
Kevin closed the space between them pulling the dork into an embrace. Edd laid his head in Kevin's crook of his neck wrapping his arms around Kevin's back. He smoothed down the black hair kissing his head.
"I like it too your mother was right it's quite dashing" Kevin chuckled he felt Eddward brush his lips against his neck kissing the flesh there. He trailed kisses up to his chin slipping a hand under Kevin's shirt tracing circle with his finger. Kevin lifted a hand to tilt Eddward's face to his, kissing him gently each kiss lingering longer and longer. However the hunger over took him Eddward's scent filling his nostrils, but he wouldn't force Eddward to do anything he didn't want to do.
Eddward drowned in the kiss felling his abdomen tighten. Arms wrapped around him picking him up off his feet. He let out a small grunt before he landed on the bed gently. Kevin kissed his forehead wrapping Eddward's covers over him. Kevin pulled the genius into his arms laying Eddward's head on his shoulder. Edd wriggled in his arms getting comfortable the heat coming of the larger man comforted him sending him into sleep. Both close to unconsciousness jolted at the knock at the door.
Kevin turn to lay flat on his back so he and Edd could see the door. Edd leaned on his arms and saw Reade fidgeting by the door.
"I….um…I had a bad dream…." His little voice cracked at bad making Eddward's heart squeeze.
"Well what are you doing over there little man come 'er" Kevin seemed to always know what to say. Reade's little face glowed with happiness and he ran up to the bed. Kevin let him climb up then scooped him in between him and Edd while Edd lifted the covers for him. Before long they all fell asleep.
Eddward woke up with Reade in his arms, Reade had a hand near his mouth and the other grabbing onto Eddward's shirt.. He looked so peaceful relaxed that Eddward did not dare move lest he wake him. He turned to see Kevin but noticed he was gone. Edd thought maybe he risen to use the restroom or to eat. He brought his eyes back to the child sliding his fingers through his hair feeling the softness. This child resembled him when he was a child greatly. Eddward kept brushing his hair when some of it was moved he froze, underneath that hair was a very small tuft of white hair growing from Reade's left temple. Eddward's eyes grew wide he felt the cogs in his head begin to click when Jim came into the room.
"Edd you must come down we have new information from the Kankers." Jim was a bit confused as he saw Edd's expression "Everything alright brother?" Eddward nodded he was over reacting he was sure he slowly slipped out of Reade's hold and grabbed clothes to change into.
"Allow me to freshen up and I shall meet you downstairs." Eddward nodded at Jim.
"Better meet us in the lab Kevin's waiting for you there" At hearing Kevin's name Eddward blushed pouting at Jim.
After his shower Edd slipped into a dark blue dress shirt tucking it into black tight fitting slacks and lastly buttoned a black silk vest over his dress shirt. He combed his inky shoulder length hair back taking one good look before leaving the bathroom.
He rushed to the lab feeling a bit giddy. When he reached the door to the room he saw Nazz sitting on the test tube table swinging her legs covering her mouth with her bandaged wrapped hand as she laughed out loud, holding Kevin's red Stetson in the other. Eddy was leaning against the table laughing with Jim next to him. Eddward wanted to take the hat from Nazz.
"It's not that funny guys seriously when a short Irish woman is chasing you with a rolling pin shouting things in Gaelic you run first ask questions later." Kevin was kneeling beside some mechanical contraption wearing cotton grey pants and a singlet. His arms and white shirt covered in grease. He shook his head before noticing Eddward at the door, he gave a nod in his direction a soft smile spreading on his face as the slighter male walked toward him.
"What is going on if I may ask?" Eddward stopped a couple of feet away from Kevin, as much as he wanted to get his hands all over the red head he didn't want to get messy.
"Just telling a funny story of Kevin wetting his knickers running from his mother!" Nazz placed the Stetson on Eddward's head before laughing loudly again. Eddward tried to stifle a laugh by covering his mouth with the back of his hand.
"NAAAZZ!" Kevin stood up quickly red coloring his cheeks "It wasn't like that I was messing around and my Ma caught me so she started to chase me and an auto came by splashing me with water!" Kevin was so flustered it sent Eddward into a laughing spell he held his sides from how much he was laughing.
"As sweet as all this is we would like to know—"
"Are you going to let us go or what?" Lee interrupted her sister May. Eddward looked over to see the two sisters they captured tied up to a chair. They were bruised up some of their wounds looked new.
"Apparently they were hired by someone to take care of you guys but they don't know who" Kevin answered wrapping his arms around his chest.
"Kevin you didn't….." Eddward pointed at the girls. Kevin raised a brow and shook his head then pointed at Nazz.
"Bad ass Lass over here dear remember" Nazz waved at him. Eddward noticed the bandages wrapped around her knuckles.
"All we need to do is find those brothers and find out what's going on." Jim interjected "You girls will be released to the authorities." He pointed at the two turning to leave to his office to call them.
"Aaaah May is a good girl Jim! She is my friend!" Eddward swung around when he heard the big guy's voice without thinking he and Eddy ran toward him. They were stopped when Sarah stepped in front of them.
"Hold it! You morons are going to send him back to the bed if you touch him!" Sarah was right he was being held up by Jimmy and Sarah at each of his sides but he looked a hundred times better than the day before.
"It is time for breakfast Double D we can have buttered toast and May is sorry she's a good girl Eddy!" He pouted at the other Ed boys "Tell 'em you're sorry May"
"I really am sorry I just listen to my sisters!" May yelled out she seemed genially sorry. Lee kicked her with her free legs.
"Let em stay here we will figure out what to do later after we find those guys" Kevin stated "I'll meet you guys in the kitchen I'll get cleaned up" He ran up the stairs taking two steps at a time.
They all ate when Kevin got back with Reade behind him. Eddward gasped when he saw him he was wearing a long sleeved white dress shirt with black shorts being held up by black suspenders. White knee high socks covering his legs and black boots covering his feet. His hair was combed back and a black flat cap lay on his head. Kevin looked good too, he cleaned up wearing a blood red dress shirt tucked into very dark grey slacks black military boots and a matching grey vest with chains dangling from the one side of the pocket to the other. He walked over to the dork and took his hat back flipping it onto his head then winking at him. Eddward's face flushed at the redhead before returning to his meal.
Reade ran and climbed up on Eddward's lap outstretching his hand to pick at Edd's plate. Kevin grabbed a napkin and wrapped it in Reade's collar. After breakfast the whole gang, except Ed Sarah and jimmy, drove to the location that Reade directed them too.
"So this the place kid?" Eddy asked pointing to a crumbling building near an empty area at the sea port. Reade ignored him completely. He had gotten quitter and quitter the closer they got to the location.
"Oi ya brat answer the question" Kevin chuckled ruffling Reade's hair over the cap. Without speaking he nodded his head and when the car came to a full stop he jumped out and ran into the building.
"Reade! Come back Reade!" Eddward didn't hesitate he ran right after the child.
"Edd Wait up!" Kevin shouted trying to get out of the coach.
"Reade?" Eddward called out hearing steps behind him. He kept running chasing the steps until he ended up on a top floor of the building. Reade stood a distance not moving, his face completely empty of emotions. Reade looked up his eyes wide blue eyes shining.
"Reade sweetie?" Eddward felt a chill rip through him he saw Reade smiling cruelly before feeling the hit behind his head and darkness overtaking him.
