AN/hey guys, sorry for the long wait, personal problems, hope you like this chapter!
Screams down the halls.
Maddening screams down the halls.
Maddening screams down the halls of an asylum.
These were the sounds that greeted Sebastian as he jolted awake from his patient bed, his last memory that he recalled was staring into the familiar cracked mirror that usually brought him here.
"What the fuck?" Sebastian's usual question echoed throughout the small room as he walked towards his room door but didn't open it; instead he listened to the sounds coming from, what he believed to be, the room he usually went to use his green gel.
"More." a rough croaky feminine voice demanded along with the sound of metal rubbing together.
"Remember that I only recommend 20 units at a time. You have now taken 300." Sebastian noted the emotionless voice of the nurse coming from the same direction.
"I said more." the hoarse voice growled back before the nurse calmly replied.
"As you wish."
In the deafening silence all Sebastian could take in was the sounds of buttons being pressed before the screams down the halls echoed once more. Sebastian recognized the voice to match Wren's sarcastic one and before he realized it, he bolted out of the door and towards the flashing room. Coming to his senses, he was once again stopped in his tracks in the reception as he peered into the dark room which held the mechanical chair. He spotted a dim red light on the floor that illuminated two bare feet that seemed to curl in on themselves.
Suddenly a bright light that could mimic lightening flashed and lit up the whole room for only a second, but it was enough time to show Sebastian the demon in the chair.
In the chair sat Wren or Sparrow strapped down on the chair with her fists clenched tight and sparks coming from the needles in the helmet that attached itself to her head. Sebastian would have ran in to relieve her of the pain right away if not for the expression on her face; a pure smile of insanity was the only way to describe it, the dark rings under her eyes could only mean she has sat there for a while along with the sweat dripping off of the end of her nose.
Sebastian stared into the dark room, which was once again lit by a dim red light, before striding up to the barred door which always reminded him of a prison door.
"What are you doing to her?" He asked the silhouette of the nurse who stood before some sort of control panel he never noticed in his previous visits.
"I'm simply giving her what she has asked for." She replied as if it were obvious.
"More." The hoarse voice repeated, catching the attention of both the nurse and Sebastian.
"Stop! Stop giving her whatever she's asking for. It's clear that it's affecting her mental health!" Sebastian shouted before he was cut off by loud laughing that you wouldn't expect from none other than a mental patient.
"Stop, stop! You're affecting her mental health!" The voice mocked Sebastian's words as the sound of buckles were being ripped apart and the familiar sound of the mechanical helmet lifting off. "My mental health was lost long ago- so very long ago."
"Wren, you may have struck me as a reckless idiot who just wanted to throw their life away but you were sane! One of the few left in this world." Sebastian said, trying not to show that he was slightly intimidated by the dark figure in the room, one whom he could only see by their feet.
"So, my sister made quite an impression on you did she?" Sparrow muttered. Her voice sounded as fragile as glass. If her voice were an antique, Sebastian wouldn't mind betting that dust would be wheezing out of it.
"Sparrow." Sebastian realized, "but I thought you were mute?"
"Yeah, so did I. Turns out all I needed was some strength in my muscles and voila, my voice actually works now." Sparrow replied.
"What do you mean power?" Sebastian asked, although he couldn't see her face he could practically feel her grinning.
"The ability to harness the same powers as Ruvik, to have conscious influence here." Sparrow described. "But I need more"
"No you don't! That kind of power will kill you or worse it will turn you into a psychopath like Ruvik!" Sebastian yelled back. Silence engulfed the room and the atmosphere thickened.
"Don't talk about Ruvik like that." Sparrow growled out as she felt her anger boil into uncontrollable energy. Her emotions scattered into distant particles inside her head as questions erupted from nowhere.
'Why am I defending him? What's Ruvik to me? He wants to kill Leslie so why am I defending him?' She thought but they soon dissolved as Sparrows ears picked up on Sebastian's next words.
"Why are you defending him? He's the reason you're here!" Sebastian continued.
"Stop it." Sparrow muttered as she brought her hands up to clench her scalp as she felt her anger boil in her veins.
"He's trying to kill everybody! Hell, he's already killed Connelly and Jimenez and now he's after us!"
"I said STOP IT!" Sparrow screamed as her new found powers mixed with her emotions. Just as her scream traveled down the halls of the asylum, tiles began exploding off of the walls before a massive force threw Sebastian to the other side of the hall where the cracked mirror stood.
Sparrow's eyes widened as she looked over the damage that she had done before the surprise turned into maddening laughter. "Look at me now! I don't need to be afraid anymore!" she shouted happily.
When Sebastian woke, he found himself standing in front of the mirror he went through moments before, the glow no longer seeping through the cracks or the sounds of sweet music playing, clearly signaling that he couldn't go back through.
"What the hell did she do to herself?" Sebastian asked himself as he exited the room and continued to head out of the building, unaware of the upcoming commotion.
Kidman cautiously walked with Leslie by her side who waddled close to her. Her eyes drifted among the bubbles that floated in the air, none of them popping even when Kidman bumped into a few. The colorful playground brought in a sense of tranquility and safety, the swings moving as if kids played on them. The playground seemed alive, a perfect place for a farewell.
Leslie tentatively slipped his hand into Kidman's as he led them through the playground, not nervous about Ruvik suddenly showing up or any monsters around the corner.
"Leslie can go home? Can take the train all the way home?" Leslie muttered to Kidman as they walked through the playground.
"No Leslie, not today." Kidman replied. Leslie stopped and faced her with a hopeful smile.
"You'll … protect me?"
"Yes, that's my job." she replied with a gentle smile.
"Good good good." Leslie smiled as he let go of Kidman's hand and waddled a few feet in front of her, not really looking where he was going with his gaze focused on the floor. "When I get home, they'll be… surprised."
Kidman gasped as she stared at the figure who appeared before Leslie, stopping him in his tracks as he stared at the bare feet a few inches away from his own. Leslie hesitated before he looked up and gazed into the familiar bright aqua green eyes that he had come to cherish.
"Birdy..." He muttered, uncertain if the person before him was merely an illusion. The last time he saw her, she had fallen into the river that flooded the street.
"Leslie…" Sparrow's unused voice was like a soft song lulling him to sleep. He didn't question how she could talk now, he merely appreciated that he was finally able to listen to her voice and hopefully continue to do so. "I'm so glad I found you."
"Sparrow?" Kidman asked, confusion written over her face and slight annoyance that her chance to end things there was delayed…or was it? There was something new about Sparrow that she couldn't quite put her finger on but she took note of the false smile that spread across her face.
"I'm sorry you thought I was gone," Sparrow muttered to Leslie, ignoring Kidman. Sparrow then spread her arms and stepped forward to Leslie, engulfing him in a loose hug. "I won't let anyone get you." She whispered in his ear before her menacing eyes drifted to Kidman, who now had a gun pointed at the both of them.
"You don't understand, you don't know what he'll become."
"I do, I've seen it." Sebastian's voice appeared from behind Kidman, a gun pointed to her back.
Leslie tucked his head into the crook of Sparrow's neck as his arms finally wrapped themselves around her waist, aware of Kidman's gun pointing at him without even having to look.
"You don't understand what Ruvik is after." Kidman vaguely explained.
"So tell me, what is he after?"
"He's after Les-"
"And he won't get him." Sparrow intervened, her embrace on Leslie tightening as she saw the determination in Kidman's eyes, already knowing she wasn't about to give up without a fight.
"I can't let Leslie live, I have orders." Kidman said, pushing the hammer down and steadying her aim.
As if in slow motion, the playground stopped moving and the bubbles stopped floating in the air. Sparrow stroked Leslie's albino hair before whispering in his ear, "Do you trust me?"
Leslie nodded his head against her neck before Sparrow lifted her head revealing her eyes, now glowing a bright emerald as she glared at Kidman.
Suddenly Kidman pulled the trigger, releasing a loud bang that rang through the area. Sparrow acted quickly before teleporting Leslie safely away but leaving herself still standing in the way of an oncoming bullet. Quickly lifting her arm out she stopped the bullet in mid-air, smirking when she heard a gasp escape the detectives. Pushing the bullet back, it grazed Kidman's arm, leaving a nasty cut.
Without hesitating Kidman unleashed all her bullets at Sparrow who in turn smiled darkly as she diverted the bullets to fly past her. Soon enough, Kidman found herself firing nothing as the trigger simply clicked.
"Shit." Kidman muttered.
"My turn." Sparrow grinned before lifting her arms up so that her hands were level with her shoulders. The ground around her shook and cracked before loose debris started swirling around her like she was in the middle of a tornado. With a simple flick of her wrist, she sent a mass amount of rock and metal flying toward Kidman and Sebastian, who both tried to dive out of the way but finding it to be no use as the debris hit them.
Sparrow's maniac smile widened as the floor collapsed beneath them and they were both sent underground somewhere. Sparrow burst out laughing at the events that took place, finding it way too easy to have killed them. Wait, why did she want to kill them?
Sparrow's smile faded as she realized what she had done. She gained this power to protect, not to go on a killing spree. The tornado continued to form around her but instead of feeling powerful, she felt trapped. A loud ringing started to blur her thoughts as she clutched at her hair.
"You cannot allow that power to consume you. If you do, you will become a haunted!" Laura's blurred figure appeared over the other side of the tornado, reaching out towards her. The blurred figure slowly turned into Wren, more battered and bruised than Sparrow remembered.
"Don't let that power consume you!" Wren shouted above all the noise of rocks and metal clanging against each other.
Listening to her other half, she clenched her eyes and willed the power to stop- but the power didn't cease at all as the loud ringing in her head continued, slowly driving Sparrow more insane than she already was.
"I can't!" she shouted back, her eyes glowing more brightly by the second. Tears started to stream down her face as she collapsed in the middle of the tornado, exhaustion taking over as she watched the blurred figure of Wren try to reach her from the other side.
"SPARROW!" Wren yelled as she felt the connection between them dwindle; the power was consuming her, Sparrow was dying.
With a new surge of adrenaline Wren bolted into the wall of powerful gale force winds and before she could reach the other side a piece of flying concrete made contact with her ankle. It gave a sickening snap but she didn't let it distract her.
"Sister," Wren muttered as she hobbled towards her fallen friend, kneeling by her body and taking note of her shallow breath. "I'm sorry for being a jerk your entire life." Wren started as she lied down beside Sparrow and gripped her identical in her own arms, "I was jealous you see. Jealous that you didn't know I existed, so I screwed up our life, I sent us to a mental hospital and I gave them a reason to keep us there. I hated the fact that when I beat up those kids in the street for picking on you, you didn't even know I existed, you didn't know what I did and I hated that."
Wren turned her head to the unconscious twin who lay beside her. "I wish I could have been better to you. I'm sorry," she said before stroking the side of her face, "now you'll have to be boringly sane." She whispered before feeling a tear drop across her face. "I'm not afraid to die anymore, I'm not afraid to disappear."
With a smile gracing her lips, she used what was left of her energy to absorb Sparrows power, A pulsing green aura drifted and turned into a red aura as it connected with Wren's palm. Wren could already feel herself fill up with overwhelming energy before her eyes started to drift close. The tornado around them decreased into a gentle breeze and all the debris fell to the floor.
As Wrens breathing came to a halt, Sparrow's started to increase before her eyes fluttered open. Looking around, she vaguely remembered the events that took place a few moments before. All she remembered was Wren's face finding her in the dark.
'Wren!' Sparrow exclaimed in her mind as she turned towards the figure beside her. Leaning her head down on her chest she couldn't hear a heartbeat nor could she hear any sign of breathing.
Suddenly Wren's body began to glow, her bruised face and twisted ankle fixed themselves and for a moment she looked like a sleeping beauty, a peaceful look on her face. The confused Sparrow shook Wren's body as tears started to form in her eyes before spilling down her dirt covered cheeks.
Wren's body then slowly began to dissolve, sparkles of white dust separating her body and forming mass before the particles drifted towards Sparrow and into her chest just above her heart. As each particle made their way inside Sparrow, she took in all of Wren's memories, the memories that Sparrow didn't have access to, and the secrets that Wren withheld from her- she now knew them all.
"Wren… you… you knew this whole time that I could live on without you... that I was stronger than you but you couldn't live without me. That's why you convinced Ruvik that we couldn't live without each other, because you were afraid to disappear." Sparrow couldn't express her guilt, finding out what was behind all the anger. It pained her more to know that now one of them had died, the other was sane, and she was no longer mute. "Wren come back!" she shouted as she clawed the space Wren's body once occupied. "Wren I need you!"
No matter how much Sparrow pleaded, Wren didn't come back, but Sparrow didn't stop mourning her or didn't stop blaming herself, thinking she could withstand all that power and now it cost her the life of her sister, her other half.
It's weird to think that at the start they were bitter enemies and now Sparrow wanted her back in her life. Just like how normal sisters would act. They hated each other, but they could never stop loving one another.
