Chapter 16: The Group
Tris's POV:
I don't think I had even been more terrified in my life. We walked down the hallway, Christina's arm still affectionately wrapped around my shoulder.
"I'm so fucking scared," I whispered to her.
"Don't be. Act like you did in my room, and you'll be fine," Christina assured her. They entered the pit, and Tris saw the group and her breath caught in her throat.
Be cool, she thought. Be dauntless.
"Sup pansycakes!" Christina called as they walked up.
The group turned to them and she could see piercings, tattoos, and elaborate makeup. They had everything Tris didn't.
Tobias's POV:
I heard Christina yell, but my friends were blocking my vision to see her. When they finally moved aside, I froze. Tris had changed.
She looked… fantastic. She didn't look like a Beatrice. She looked like the Tris that I knew she was. She looked fierce and powerful. And well, hot.
Black was definitely her color.
I could see apprehension behind her eyes but she looked as though she was trying to hold it in. She locked eyes with me and smiled sheepishly.
Tris's POV:
When his friends moved aside, Tobias stared at me. It was uncomfortable, to say the least, but when I made eye contact with him, he grinned. And just as soon as it started, the moment was over.
His friends enveloped me in to their circle, cheering and greeting me.
"This is the crew," Christina said, introducing me. "Tris, this is Uriah, Marlene, Shauna, Lynn, Will, and Zeke."
They all smiled, except for Lynn, who looked me up and down and sighed loudly.
"Hey," I said, not sure what to do.
"Well," Zeke said, throwing his arm around me. "Since Four here has informed us that this is pretty much your last night alive, we should show you the Dauntless way to party."
"Go easy on her." Shauna scolded, pushing Zeke's arm off. "She's not used to this."
"Yeah, she is a Stiff after all," Lynn added with a glare.
"She can take it," Tobias said, grabbing my hand. "Tower?"
"Tower," the group echoed.
"Where are we going?" I asked as Christina pulled me in to a train car.
"The Tower," she grinned, spreading her arms wide.
"Yeah, but what is that?" I asked.
She winked at me. "You'll see."
I sighed and sat down next to Tobias. He wrapped his arm around me and I leaned my head in to his shoulder.
"Don't get too comfortable love birds," Zeke yelled back at us from where he was leaning out of the door. "The stop's coming up."
Everyone in our car stood up and prepared to jump. Zeke when first, whooping and yelling as he flew off the train. Then Christina went, laughing as the wind grabbed at her clothes.
Finally, Tobias and I stood at the doors.
"Together?" he asked.
"Bullshit. I can do it myself," I replied, leaping off the train. This time, I didn't hit the ground and roll. Instead, I stumbled a few feet forward and came to a stop, where Christina was smiling at me.
"Just like a true Dauntless," Zeke laughed from a few feet away.
Tobias came up behind me and kissed my head. "I love you."
I turned to look at him. "Really? I didn't notice."
He smiled and grabbed my hand as we walked to the entrance of the Tower. Shauna, Lynn, Marlene, and Will were waiting for us by the elevator.
"Are we going to the top?" I asked. Shauna nodded. I looked at Tobias and he swallowed but smiled at me.
"I'll be fine. I've been doing this for two years now."
We all crowded in to the elevator and Shauna pressed the button for the 100th floor. I felt the elevator jerk as it began to rise and Tobias squeezed my hand. It took a while for the elevator to reach the top but once the doors opened my breath was instantly taken away.
The view was spectacular. I hadn't learned a number large enough to describe the number of stars in the sky. Looking over the edge I could see all the way across the city, and on one side of the building I could see the outline of the unlit ferris wheel.
"This is amazing," I said turning to Tobias. Even he looked awestruck, even though I could tell he was hesitant due to how high up we were.
"Yes, it is. It never fails to make me feel wonderful." He looked at me. "Just like you."
I looked at my shoes, feeling a blush come over my cold cheeks. Four pulled me in close to him, brushing his lips against mine.
"Ew! Boo!" Zeke yelled at us, from over by the ledge. Christina was pretending to throw up over the side.
"Disgusting," Lynn said in deadpan, but even she didn't seem angry.
"Enjoying the view Tris?" Uriah, said pulling me away from Tobias and over towards the ledge.
"Amazing. The city is beautiful at night."
"I was talking about my face, but I suppose the city is pretty hot too," he replied, winking at me.
"That's my girlfriend," Tobias warned from over by Zeke, but he didn't seem mad.
"I'm joking!" Uriah said in surrender. "But really, the city is amazing."
"Yeah, I could stay up here forever," I muttered.
"I hope not," Shauna said, reaching out for my hand. "Because we've gotta get a move on."
"This is all we're going to do?" I asked.
"Nah, we've got to get down somehow, right?" she asked slyly.
"You mean we're not taking the elevator?" I asked as she pulled me up to stand next to her on the concrete ledge. I teetered back and forth, suddenly realizing how dizzyingly high up we were.
"Nope. You're going to take the zip line down," she said.
