CHAPTER ZERO: PROLOGUE
NO ONE
"Beginnings are sudden, but also insidious. They creep up on you sideways, they keep to the shadows, they lurk unrecognized. Then later, they spring."
- Margaret Atwood
SHE SPENT HER days in the dusty mountains of that wasteland.
She had only been a mere child at the time. Early onto into the troublesome age of five, the wasteland didn't bother as much as it did the others. She kept her crayons and coloring books with her to make sure of that. Though, it wasn't like the wasteland actually meant anything. It was just the place she enjoyed. It was somewhere where the big guys brought her when she got too restless within the castle.
She heard them often say complaints about her being too much to handle. She didn't understand why that was the case. She tried her best to be a good little girl just like her father told her to be.
The girl laid on her stomach, her legs swinging happily behind her as she drew the scenery around her. There was nothing other than high, brown mountains. The sky was covered in clouds. The wind occasionally blew sand around the hills, creating mini sandstorms that forced around pebbles and rocks. All signs of life in the wasteland had long since been forgotten. The only reminder that the world held significance was the remnants of discarded weapons in the distance.
She wasn't allowed to go that far out into the wasteland. It didn't matter how curious she got; it was forbidden territory if she wanted to keep her privilege of coming back. She had whined about it before, but it got her nothing each time. All except for being ridiculed for ten minutes straight.
"Get up, it's time to go."
She looked up to gaze into the man's golden eyes. It was a matter of time until he announced that they had to go back. She didn't make a fuss like she normally did. With anyone else would have been fine. However, the man that took her out to play today held very little patience for her games. He didn't find fun in playing like the others. He was serious, and when she was in his presence, she was commanded to act orderly and respectful.
The five-year-old stood up and gathered her crayons. So many times did she hope that if she stayed long enough, the blue-haired woman would come to visit her. The woman hadn't been to that world in years. That was perhaps why she liked coming to the wasteland whenever they allowed her. All she wanted was the chance to see the woman again, and ask her if her days were brighter than the dark one they met on.
Nonetheless, she collected her things, walking over to her father. Despite the blue-haired woman not being there today, maybe she would be there tomorrow . . . or the day after that . . . or the day after that . . .
Okay, here is You're The One Who Will Open The Door 2.0! I'm going back and editing this story now that I've finished it. This includes adding this prologue for extra suspense. I hope you enjoy this story. I've put a lot of work into it.
