Chapter 10

Feet firmly planted onto the ground as I held my stance. The wooden knife held loosely in between thin fingers. I stared intensely at my opponent's face. Her eyes were hard and flickering in the drowning light. The corners of her thin lips twitched as she watched me analyze her. Amusement decorated her features while her hands idly rested against her sides. With a smirk painted on her lips she held up the knife and slashed it in front of her throat signally my downfall. She charged, both hands on the hilt of the knife to give her thrust more momentum and force. She went head on. I stood motionless waiting for the right time to dodge. Two seconds passed, then five, six, seven, the knife was now merely a few inches away from damaging my face, eight, nine, I could already feel the wind around the object being pierced as it shot straight towards me. I twirled right, the wooden knife along with its wielder were thrown forward, their speed was too great to stop. Using her moment of surprise I swatted down and stuck out my leg giving it a clockwise motion swing kick. My leg collided with her own and sent her crashing face first to the ground. A puff of dust erupted from her impact, along with a muffled groan, but the fight wasn't over yet.

I jumped back on my feet and I stared at the short haired, blond as she pushed herself off the ground and then swirled around. Once her legs were set to the sandy terrain, I didn't allow for her to have one second of rest. Before she could react I took hold of her knife wielding arm and forced it back. I twisted her elbow so it would almost touch in-between her shoulder blades. Her small wrist was held captive by my hand and pressed against her own body. The thin fingers cramped up in sudden pain and released the knife, and as it fell the girl's mouth whimpered. Using my strength I pushed her away, releasing her arm. She stumbled forward trying to control her balance, and once she had enough control she turned to retrieve her weapon, but it was too late. The sight that greeted her was that of the point of a wooden knife pressed against her throat.

With a defeated sigh she raised her hands up in the air and said, "I'm done." I lowered the knife and took a step back to give her room to breath. The intense look in her eyes faded and she smiled at me, satisfied with the our match.

…..

A cold hand wrapped around my lips and like glue bounded them together. The owner of the hand was dressed in darkness. He's breathing was so heavy and labored, that you would've guessed he was all out of strength as he panted in the dark, but it was quiet the opposite. His hands held me down firmly, pushed me down with the pressure. My eyes were wide, and I threw my hands in the air in an attempt at freedom, but it was no use. The soft snores of the girls inside the cabin begin to stir. Mumbling and groaning started to erupt from their lips as their dreams began to fade and become hazy images. Within the realm of reality and fantasy they rolled onto their sides or adjusted their limbs in a more comfortable position. The man holding me down begin to feel desperate. His free arm came at me harshly and pulled me up by the hair. I gasped and bit his palm, but the man only winced and pulled me up in a sitting position. I was too heavy for him so he intended to drag me out, and I would of resisted too, if I hadn't realized who it was. Maybe it was the proximity of my face with his or that his breath smelled of alcohol, alcohol which only the sponsors could have had access to at camp. With one last pull Erik had me at my feet and dragged me out with one hand on my lips and another on my waist. I couldn't fight back, not if it meant for him to get exposed as the sneaky bastard he really is, and definitely not if it meant the Survey corps would lose a such a rich sponsor.

The night air tore through my night gown, biting and scratching me with it's icy cold touch. Goosebumps ran through my skin and the hairs at the back of my neck jumped in surprise. It didn't take long before Erik let go of me, and by then we were behind an empty cabin. Viciously he threw me against the wooden wall, but I was prepared for it and used my arms to prevent the collision. Turning around I saw Erik's body in the moon light, he had one leg bend and the other standing straight. His composure looked fragile and ready to tip over. Shadows danced across his face and he looked me in the eyes.

"You think you're so clever. Playing with my heart and then throwing it away." I stared at him in confusion. "How long have you two been together, huh. Did you just throw yourself into his arms? Did you two plan this from the beginning?" His words were sloppy and slurred as if he's tongue had been sedated and left numbed, unable to swallow his own spit. Drool fell from the corners of his lips and his eyes were bloodshot from the weariness. "I really do love you, but you just played with me. Levi, that bastard told me you two didn't know each other and like a fool I believed him! Ha!" He broke into a sad hysterical laughter.

"Erik, your drunk, go back to your cabin."

"No!" I stare at him with irritation. He was going too far and if only I could just shut him up. With one blow to the face I could make his drunkard face disappear, but I couldn't. Not now, not unless I intended to prove to Erwin that I could handle this situation with intelligence rather then brute strength, which by all means I prefer at this moment.

I took a deep breath and in my calmest tone of voice I spoke, "Erik, calm down. You've had a lot to drink, let me take you back to your cabin."

"No!" I gritted my teeth. What a stubborn man! "I won't let you touch me!" His hand went up and even though his body was sluggish and the alcohol coursing through his blood affected the functioning of his brain his hand went down so fast it caught me off guard. His hand struck my right check and down I went. Erik being a man had more strength then me and so the force of his hit send a shock wave through my unprepared body. As I touched the ground everything went black and then I saw myself. My dress was a bloody mess and strands of hair fell in front of my face. I was panting, running towards the boats in Wall Maria. I held my Jane in my arms, still breathing. I saw myself running, asking for help and how I raced through the line towards one of the Garrison soldiers, but then I saw a man with an ugly, twisted face shrouded in anger come up behind me. I yelled for myself to move, but she couldn't hear me. That's when I fell, and the man yelled at me, but all I could see were his lips move. I couldn't hear what he saying, it was all so quiet, unreal. The image of the man raising his arm and then having his hand slam down onto my cheek replayed in my mind over and over in only the few seconds that took me to touch the ground.

The ground was cold from the night's frosty air. "I'll make sure everyone knows about you and Levi!" My mind was clouded in anger, in a mixture of emotions. They all overshadowed my thinking processes, I raised myself up. My body felt heavy, sluggish, the blood cursing through my veins started to accelerate and adrenaline took over. My eyes fixed on the drunken Erik and I... I smacked my already formed fist onto his face. The world froze. Erik's face was squashed on one side and my fist was digging through his face, then the world once again continued to move. Someone had pressed the play button on the screen and now Erik laid down on the ground, motionless. Small puffs of frost formed around my lips as I breathed hard. A few minutes passed when the sudden realization shock me back into reality. Erik, wasn't moving. Was he dead? The thought of it frightened me, but not because I felt guilt, far from it, I felt relieved, like a weight had been brushed off my shoulders, but now a bigger problem was thrown onto my entire body. If I did kill Erik, what would Erwin and Levi say. I could hide the body. It would be easy to find a good burring spot for his sorry little ass, but that wasn't going to fix this.

A soft breezed of wind brushed off behind me, sweeping my loose hair forward. Strands of hair made their way onto my face. Some poked my eyes and others entered my gaping lips, and as I tried to free myself of these small nuisances, the body at my feet groaned. At that moment an idea popped into my mind. I could use this situation to my advantage. Erik, he's been playing me, using me to fulfill whatever sick fantasy he had, but now it was my turn to play too.

…...

I walked towards Erik's cabin, with my arms wrapped around his waist. I could barely keep him standing and at times his knees would buckle and it took all of my strength to prevent him from pulling both of us down. He was half conscious now, but he kept drifting from reality to the dream world.

I held him steadily as I stumbled towards the wooden house, across Levi's cabin and straight towards Erik's. I stood there for a second, and as I did I knew I needed to do this right now. Erik was still out of it, and I need to do this before he woke up and had the ability to spoil my plan, and so I knocked. The sound of my hand hitting wood echoed through the cabin and even through my own ears. My heart was beating with anticipation and fear. After a while their was nothing only silence and so I knocked again. This time I could hear the footsteps coming closer to the door. My mind was dizzy and I felt so nervous. This was a risky move, a plan that could fail if they didn't believe me. The palms of my hands started to sweat, and the sudden urge to run screamed through my mind. Right then and their my mother's image flashed in front of me. The way she stood in front of those merchants, her teasing smile, the look in her eyes that shined with an artificial light, and her voice that was soothing and calm. When she fooled men, when she lied, she knew what she wanted, what to say for them to believe, to want to believe. I've seen her do it before and for once my mother gave me a gift, one that was neatly wrapped around in a black veil, and topped off with a red ribbon bow. She be so proud to see her daughter to do such a thing, no... she be proud of seeing her Marry Kane do such a thing. This thought didn't reassure me though. Even if I've seen how to fool others, I've never tried it, and that scared me. I was about to let go off Erik and run, but it was too late though, the door had already been opened, and as the light from inside flushed in I closed my eyes as to not be blinded from it.

When I slid open my eyelids a man dressed in blue silky pajamas had answered the door. His eyes were half open and decorated with dark circles, but they soon grew wide as he found a young girl at his foot steps. Nervously he combed his gray hair in an attempt to unravel its knots. He soothed out the creases and wrinkles in the fabric and smiled kindly. "Um, hello," but his smile soon disappeared as he spotted Erik leaning against me. The surprise was evident on his face, and I felt like running right then and there, but then the bruised on my cheek throbbed. Once again I remembered the reason I was here for, and how much I had to lose because of Erik.

I kept my eyes on the floor. "Sorry to wake you so late at night, but... um.. I found Mr. Welton sneaking into the girl's dorm." I glanced up to see if the man was buying my act. He blinked several times and stood there. He didn't speak, nor did he move, so I decided to go on.

Keeping my eyes down I balanced Erik's weight of one foot to another as I answered. "I..I heard someone opening the door in the dorm so I got up to see who it was, but when I got closer, well he... he... " I broke off in the middle of the sentence. I tried to look scared, which wasn't that hard since I was indeed terrified of failing. "Um.. well I took Mr. Welton outside before the girls woke up, but he was too drunk to listen and."

He placed a hand a hand onto the top of my head to cease my talking. "I see, so you brought him here before he could get into any trouble." His eyes stared down at me and I unwrapped one hand from Erik's waist and touched my cheek and now he could clearly see the purple mark etched into my skin. With an understanding the man nodded and bend down. His arms took hold of Erik's still half awaken body. He looked concerned about me and somehow I found it sweet. This man didn't seem to be like one of those more disgusting sponsors and for that I was grateful for.

Everything was going good so far, until another man appeared behind the one wearing the silk, blue pajamas. He was still fully dressed and his dark black eyes were bloodshot from the lack of sleep. He looked me up and down and through my night gown. A smug smile appeared onto his face and he peered over the other man's shoulder. "Hey there little lady." His words were slurred and intoxicated with alcohol.

The man holding Erik looked annoyed and sighed. "Joseph, what are doing awake?"

"Huh, I just woke up cuz I heard ya talking, and well I...Wow! What the hell happened to Erik!" Just like that the drunken man noticed, for the first time that the half awake Erik was being held by the other sponsor.

"I'll explain later, but first let's get him inside." The kind man looked at me and smiled. He soon vanished back into the cabin with Erik in his arms.

"Were you the one who brought him in?" I stared at the man in front of me. He looked to be in his early thirty's, with short brown hair, and with wrinkles visible on his forehead. A long white drool mark was imprinted on his cheek. I didn't like him. He wasn't like the other guy, no, he was another Erik.

"Yeah, I found him so I brought Mr. Welton back so he wouldn't get in trouble." I wanted to leave, I wanted to just get the hell out of there.

His eyes squinted at me, like he was trying to see if I was lying or not, which I was. "Okay, but why is he knocked out, and also, how do you know his name?"

I was starting to get really nervous, he was questioning me too much. "Well, you see I um.."

"Actually now that I think of it, you weren't even there when we introduced ourselves to the other recruits. You were just going into the class when we left."

I was stuck. I tried to twist my words into lies to free myself of Erik, but now I was stripped off my plan and all that I had left to tell was the truth. So I decided to twist that too. "I've meet Mr. Welton before. We used to be neighbors before Wall Maria fell."

"Neighbor?" His voice was now more sober and dripping with suspicion.

"Yes neighbors. In fact we were friends!...Not close, but um... Mr. Welton was a very nice to me and my family, and well I recognized him so I thought I bring him back. I felt like I should help him."

"Oh, really?," He didn't sound to convinced, but then the blue pajama man returned to the door.

"Stop interrogating the poor girl. It's freezing outside and she hast raining tomorrow. Just let her go. We should be happy that she brought Erik back before he made an idiot of himself to one of the commanders." I was seriously starting to like this sponsor.

"Wait I have one more question. Why is he out cold?"

"He probably just blacked out from drinking too much."

"Actually I did hit him." Before I could have stopped myself the words escaped my lips. I was too damn proud of having knocked him out it didn't register how stupid it was for me to have blurted that out. Now I had two men staring at me, waiting for an explanation on why I did that. Quickly I tried to correct my mistake. "It was an accident! I..I didn't mean to, but he he..." The kind man glanced at my bruised cheek and I got an idea. "He got violent, and so I panicked and punched him, but he tripped and fell! Next thing I knew he was unconscious on the ground." I lowered my head. "I'm sorry."

I head the black eyed man sigh, and before I could hear whether or not they believed me, an all to familiar voice broke through the tension, and momentarily stopped my heart. In the darkness of the night Levi stood outside.
