Journal entry N°18- Mikey's journal:
Angels
I don't consider myself a huge follower of religious stuff and I don't really know for certain if there's such thing as a God, heaven or hell but I like to think there is something bigger than us up there, down there… somewhere.
People must believe in something otherwise they'd feel alone, desperate and lost.
I must sound delirious, crazy even, but you can't blame me for wanting to believe in something.
What do I believe in, you ask?
I believe in angels.
Sure, our training and team work is what keeps us alive but I believe we have our own guardian angels and they make sure we don't kiss our shells good bye every time we go outside.
Actually, we do have guardian angels: those are me and Raphie.
It sounds corny and a bit narcissist, I know, but let me explain.
Even though I knew we were named after Renaissance Masters, I felt there was a deeper meaning behind our names and wanted to know. When I was big enough to use a computer, I started searching my brothers' names meanings and my own as well.
I found out very interesting information and I wasn't surprised to find out my name (sorta) belonged to an archangel: Michael. I mean I'm an adorable, sweet little angel. Who would even doubt that!
What really surprised me, in a good way, was to find out Raphie had the name of a big time archangel too: Archangel Raphael.
I talked to Donnie about my findings but he said I shouldn't pay much attention to that. That our lives and actions shouldn't be dictated by whatever our names meant but for the first time in my life I disagreed with him.
You know why?
Because even before I found out what Raph's name meant, he had been already acting his part as this family's personal guardian angel.
I mean, have you seen the way this guy throws himself into the battlefield before anyone else?
It's against Leo's orders and against every battle code but the guy still does it.
Why? Because that way he can take down the bulkiest ones, the ones with heavy guns and distract them from us so we can get to their defenses.
And people say I never pay attention to my surroundings.
Anyway, back to Raphie.
He's always protecting us; he's always protecting me form harm, nightmares and pain in general even though he's the cause of my headaches thanks to his "friendly" slaps. He may not admit it but he listens to us when we're troubled and helps us in his own crude, tough guy-like way. Sometimes, he will even let us snuggle up to him and yes, that means he will let Leo do it too and he's watching over us like a hawk but not in a creepy way. It's more like a concerned, overprotective way.
Like an angel.
He may not have wings, he may not have a halo and he sure as hell doesn't see himself with a dress and a harp but he's still an angel to me, my family and even to the people we save.
He was an angel to Mrs. Morrison.
He was an angel to that rowdy kid Tyler.
He was an angel to Leo, helping him forge his swords and his confidence back.
He was an angel to Donnie, comforting him after we came back from our alternate dimensions.
He IS an angel to me every day.
He's an angel to the homeless old guy looking for food in the trashcans.
He's an angel to the nerdy boy getting beat up by street punks with nothing else to do.
He's an angel to the beautiful girl cornered in a dark alley with a knife against her neck and a pervert trying to rip off her blouse.
As for me, well… I'm an angel in my own ways and I also have a family to watch over but my top priority is Raphie. After all, only a guardian angel can protect another guardian angel.
