Author's Note:
I had wanted to do a story centered around the axe character. But for me, it's hard to write about someone you know so little about. I was disappointed when I found pretty much no stores with the axe in it at all, so I did the next best thing - write a story with him in it. We hardly saw the axe in the movie - he was only in a few scenes. I personally wish he had more screen time, as I really loved his character (hence me wanting to write about him.) I always seem to be attracted to the characters we know so little about. The parts I did put about him in the story, I really tried to keep in-character. And being that we don't know a lot about the axe's character to begin with, other than that he's slightly austere, I think it allows us writers a lot of room to work with. I think we can also assume that he obviously worked in the boiler room as a human, and he probably used axes a lot. :)
Also, I'm not very familiar with France's climate, aside from the basics - so I'm not sure if France gets "freak spring storms" or not. I assume any place that gets snow can. If any of you readers live in France, or have been to France, or know about France, feel free to correct me, but I won't change the story. :P
Truth be told, I was surprised at how some of the servants/objects (namely the ones in the boiler room) seemed to handle their non-human situation so well. I mean I know this goes for all of the servants in the castle, but I wanted to make the story at least a little realistic. I'm sure after years and years of being an object instead of a human, you'd eventually get used to it, no matter how sucky and unfamiliar it'd be. But one of the points I wanted to illustrate in the story was that the workers all still wished to be human, even if they were used to their predicament. Everyone comes from somewhere. I sorta kinda imagine the axe with a past more austere than his personality, but I covered only the tiny tidibts of it - his dad teaching him how to properly use an axe. Again, from what little we see of him in the movie, it's hard to judge what kind of past he might have had. First of all, what do we know about him? He's Jewish (I think), he's an axe (so he probably used an axe a lot in his human life to have been turned into one by the Enchantress), he's got a bit of a rough edge, he has an accent (I'm guessing English isn't his first language - if anyone remembers when he addressed Belle, he said, "What can I do you for?") Seriously though, doesn't it make anyone (beside me) curious as to what kind of human he was? :)
I'm analytical, and a writer and also something of a romantic, so I tend to think too much on things that most people would consider small matters.
I can't imagine what he'd want to do or could do in his free time, so I kinda went neutral on that. :P I took the easy way out and wrote him as someone who devotes most of his time to attending to matters in the boiler room (which, for all we know, could very well be what he does, unless someone needs to use him to chop something, lol. Poor guy.)
Just wanted to give a little insight as to what was going through my mind as I wrote this (yes, I wrote it first and then typed it up.)
I hope at least some of you liked the short story. :)
