Chapter 4
In all actuality my plan probably wouldn't anger Jaiden as much as mother but there was a chance that due to her habit of holding grudges she probably wouldn't want to see me at the game. At this point it was to late as I was showing off my season pass for school sports and was allowed into the gym. I quickly found an empty seat in front and sat down my backpack on the floor in front of me.
The people around me were conversing and from the mumbled together mess I could make out some of the students state how worried they were now that Jaiden was off her game. I tried to make myself smaller glad that nobody knew of our 'fight' from this morning. The teams entered the court and Jaiden looked around, a lost expression on her face, then her eyes landed on me and instantly her expression changed.
Her eyes reignited with the spark that they held when she was ready to fight, and she just seemed to be standing taller. As I saw this I knew for a fact that I only had to deal with my mom being angry at me. I sighed and resigned to watching the game knowing that after this one I would most likely be grounded for missing my appointment.
A little before halftime someone, who had arrived late to the game, sat in the empty seat next to me. I looked out of the corner of my eye and saw none other then my shrink. I sighed and turned, not sure whether I should smile or make myself smaller.
"Your mother doesn't know you are here does she?" Slowly I nodded not trusting myself to speak. "Granted I should be disappointed, but I know that you had made a promise to a friend that you would come."
I turned to her confused when I remembered telling her about tonight's game during our last meeting. I nodded and she turned back to the game. "So which player is this friend of yours?"
I turn back to the court and locate Jaiden as she makes her way across the court. "Jaiden, she's number 13."
She located Jaiden and smiled as my friend shot for points. Our half of the gym burst into cheers as the ball hit the back board and into the basket. "Your friend is really good." I winced as I thought of the school day and how bad Jaiden's game was off earlier.
She turned back to me with a smile on her face that I knew all to well. It was the smile she always gave me before she asked about my journal. Before she even said a word I pulled the journal from my bag and handed it too her, without another word she opened to the newest entry; probably due to my mother's phone call this morning.
She read in silence as the game continued in the background, when she was done she shut the book and turned to me. "This one must've hit hard." I nodded then got the journal back and replaced it into my bag.
"So have you taken my advice?" I slightly nodded then turned back to her. "Kinda, I just showed one of my friends because they saw it and asked about it first hour." She nodded then watched as I bent down to my bag again, pulling out a wrinkled glossy piece of paper.
I handed it over silently and my hands shook from just touching it. Her eyes widened as she flattened out to flyer and took in the words and patterns. I watched as her eyes stopped scanning the paper and remained on one spot or from what I could tell one name.
"Brook where did you even get this?" I then explained what had happened during the day, she listened silently and then I ended. Her eyes widened as I took the flyer back and stuffed it unceremoniously into my bag.
"Brook from what your journal always states this 'Cirque du Freak' is the center of everything that happens, so it may be that you are seeing into the life of someone who was or has yet to be tied to that place." I listen as she explains her theory, and as crazy as it sounds I can't help but feel that she is right.
With that feeling another one comes over me. If I know what fate plans for the cirque maybe by some chance I can change that and save lives of people whom I've never met. But for that to even have a chance of happening I need to relive my nightmares and experience every pain and hardship for myself. I am too lost in thought to notice as she turns to me a worried look on her face.
"Brook, I don't want you going to that cirque, it may trigger something in your condition that will has severe consequences." I didn't catch an thing of what she said but turned and caught the last part. "Brook you must promise not to set foot around the Cirque." Slowly I nodded but she still seemed skeptical.
Whatever she said next was drowned out by the crowd as the cheered at the winning basket. She and I went seperated ways, she left through the doors and I made my way to wait outside the locker room doors.
...
"I was so surprised to see you there!" Jaiden yelled again as we walked through the downtown area. As we stopped at the stoplights she turned to me a curious look in her eyes. "If you knew you were still going to come, why did you tell me you couldnt?" My breathing hitched and I swore under my breath.
Of course Jaiden had to ask that one question.
"Because me mom made plans for me but something happened so I was able to make it." I half lied hoping that for once Jaiden didn't see through it. She shrugged, just as we were given the light to cross.
After crossing we went our seperated ways, Jaiden continued forward to her house while I turned right, walking down the main street making my way towards my house. As I neared the yard I could make out the two forms of Selby and Addison running around in the yard. They noticed me and ran into the house, most likely telling our mom that I was home. It wasn't until I wad walking up the front steps that I noticed the familiar van parked in the garage.
I ran inside and nearly fell over as I bumped into someone, a rough yet friendly laugh filled the hall as I was caught in a familiar grip.
"I knew were eyes were bad Brook, but I didn't know they were this bad."
I pushed off the broad chest and stared at him. "My god Damien, you're gone who knows how long and that's the first thing you say to you sister?" He laughs again and smiled a broad white toothed grin.
"Well yeah I gotta make up for the time I missed out on giving my younger sister crap." Then we both end up laughing as we give eachother proper embraces. Just hugging him made my mind go at ease, ever since our father passed away he was the guardian presence I looked to after I woke up from a nightmare, though after he left to travel, our mom had to fill those shoes, though she did it differently.
After the embrace ended he took a step back and with a sad shine in his eyes he looked at me.
"So mom said you woke up this morning after a really bad one last night."
I nodded, "I still got the journal, if you want the full details and to catch up on what you missed." I said almost as though I were talking about some show or movie that he missed out on. His smile went from happy to kinda sad as he slowly nodded his head.
"Sure let's see what happen in the last few years."
He grabbed my gently by the shoulders as he began leading me towards the living room, as I dug around for the notebook that was somewhere in the confines of my backpack. As we were walking I decided to leave out the details about the flyer, not wanting to worry my family anymore then I already was.
