Chapter Forty-One
~ Death the Kid ~
James pulled the car up onto the curb outside Soul's apartment block, stopping the vehicle quickly as he pulled on the brake, causing a jolt to consume all three of us.
"Were here," James smirked, wrapping his arm around the passenger seat to face us.
"Barely," Maka huffed, trying to regain herself in her chair.
He gripped hold of the doors handle, and swiftly pushed it open. "Now there's no need to exaggerate."
A chuckle escaped the prison of my lips as James slammed the car door shut behind him.
He walked round to Maka's door and didn't hesitate before pulling it open holding out his arm in the direction of Soul's building and lightly bowing his head to the ground.
"Mi' lady," he smiled.
She herself smiled whilst placing her left foot out of the blue car, remaining to keep her knees together as she held her skirt down and rose out from the back seat. As if she really were that higher status portrayed by James' actions.
"Now there's no need to exaggerate," she hummed, walking past the black haired boy.
I watched his dark eyes widen as I too stepped out from the car.
I smacked my hand against his shoulder, "need some water for that burn?"
He chuckled, "I don't even think aloe vera could help."
"We'll be sure to mourn you."
"Piss off," he smiled, brushing my hand from his shoulder. "I'm gonna go park the car in the car park this time, I'll meet you up there."
I nodded, "alright."

I stood outside the main entrance of the building, staring blankly at every button that rested next to an apartment number. But despite the fact I had been here before, I couldn't for the life of me remember which number he lived at.
Apartment 56 stuck out to me more than the others, so with every second I was left standing there I felt my index finger being sucked into the portal that I swear rested behind that particular button.
I felt silly, just standing there not knowing what it was I was doing in a perfectly normal setting, so despite that very unknowing trait of mine I pressed down on the button, allowing for a loud buzzing sound to escape the speaker in front of me.
It took a few seconds but eventually an old women responded, "who is it?"
Feeling my heart race with the acceptance of my stupidity, I found myself speechless and left to stand there twiddling with my thumbs.
"Hello?"
I was about to respond with an apology, but the scruffy black haired boy appeared at my side.
"Ah, Mrs Jones I'm so sorry but it appears I've pressed the wrong button again," he smiled.
"Kid?" The little old lady questioned through the speaker, "is that you?"
He combed his pale fingers through his dark hair, "yes it is Mrs Jones, here to see Soul."
"Wonderful!" She exclaimed, "would you like to pop by for some hot chocolate and a cookie?"
I rose my eyebrows immediately and quickly turned to face the tall muscled boy beside me.
His cheeks flushed pink. "Sadly I can't today, I have errands to run."
"Aw, you are a good boy Kid." She giggled, "maybe some other time then, I'll still buzz you in though."
He dropped his hand from his hair, "thank you Mrs Jones."
The static of the speaker disconnecting echoed between the two of us, leaving us both stranded into silence. But despite the motionless sound, I was not hesitant to torment him.
"So... hot chocolate and a cookie huh?" I whispered, trying my hardest not to smile. "Is that the new 'Netflix and chill' or something?"
But before he had time to argue his side, he was interrupted by that same buzzing noise that echoed from the speaker.
"Oh look," I smirked. "The doors open."
~ Kid ~
I tapped three times against the wood of Soul's apartment door, praying that Mrs Jones wouldn't suddenly appear from her room behind us.
"I swear!" I exclaimed, "she still thinks I'm ten years old."
The green eyed girl stared up to me with her smiling eyes. "Sure she does."
Soul suddenly opened the door, he's eyebrows raised as if he were confused about our sudden arrival.
"Who buzzed you in?" He asked.
"Kid's girlfriend," Maka hummed, walking past the blonde haired boy into his living room.
"Oh," he nodded, stepping away from the door and allowing me to walk through. "Mrs Jones?"
Maka nodded but bit her lip as if to attempt to defeat her consuming laughter.
"Man, Kid," Soul smirked, "turn her down again?"
"Oh my god can all of you please shut up?"
Despite my desire of dropping their ridiculous conversation, they still looked between each other with wide grins and laughing eyes.
I walked away from the still open door into the centre of the room towards them, staring from chair to chair but the presence of the brown haired was no where around us.
"So," I turned round to face my spiky haired friend. "Where's Liz?"
Almost on cue a voice responded from the kitchen, "here."
The only odd thing about the voice's existence being that of the slight thudding sound that echoed on behind it.
I watched as Maka's fragile face grew pale as she looked round to face the kitchen doorway. Getting whiter as the thudding sounds proceeded to grow louder.
"I'm here."
She made her way through the door, crutches at both her sides and cuts consuming every inch of her tanned face.
Her blue eyes fixated themselves directly on Maka's presence, and Maka's did the exact same to her, as if both of them feared they were the prey and believed the other was the predator.
"Hey Kid?" James questioned, walking through the still opened door then kicking it behind him. "What's with the old lady in the corridor?"
