I don't own The Hunger Games.
She was swimming lazy laps of the hotel pool when Marvel saw her. She was graceful in the water, using her long legs and slim arms to propel herself forward. She parted the water effortlessly as she reached the end of the pool and turned to swim another length. As he watched her swimming, Marvel noted that her eyes were almost the exact same colour as the pool.
"Hey!" She grinned when she re-surfaced and saw him.
"Hey." He smiled back and sat at the edge of the pool, dipping his feet into the water.
"What brings you here at seven pm?" She asked, floating lazily on her back with one hand resting on the wall for support.
"It was Annie's idea, seeing as the ocean is apparently too dangerous for large amounts of people at night." Marvel laughed.
"After what happened to Madge, I don't blame her."
"I get that."
"Well, I'm here because it's a way to work out without getting all sweaty." She laughed, shooting Marvel a flash of white smile.
"That's so typically you." He rolled his eyes and she squeezed his ankle.
"Be careful, or you'll turn into Clove." At that moment, Marvel's friends raced into the indoor pool area in their swimwear.
"Woo!" Johanna yelled before cannonballing into the swimming pool. She was shortly followed by Annie, Katniss and Gale.
"You're such children." Cashmere rolled her eyes at them as she and Glimmer pumped air into their floats.
"Suck it, Cash!" Finnick yelled, and sent a wave of water towards her.
"I'm going to kill you!" She screeched.
"Ladies, ladies, please." Cato sauntered into the room, and the girl that Marvel had been talking to turned to him with bright eyes.
"You jump in then, if you're so manly." She laughed. Marvel internally sighed. It was no secret to him that she liked Cato- he was all she talked about to him.
"Oh, shut up Melissa." Cato shot back jokingly, and Melissa swam away from Marvel towards him.
"What's got you looking like your puppy just died?" Clove sat down on the wall next to him in a dark blue bikini.
I have a huge crush on your sister and she's clueless. Marvel thought, but no way did he say it. He had had a crush on Melissa since the start of junior year, when he joined the basketball team. They had gotten to know each other and he had been in love with her ever since. Watching her hang around Cato like a lost lamb for the past six months was the hardest thing he had to do, especially when Cato was obviously not interested.
"Nothing." Marvel lied. "I'm fine."
"Whatever you say." Clove shrugged and slid into the pool. She swam over to where Cato was having a splash war with Johanna.
"Hey Stone! Mason! I'm gonna kick your asses!" She yelled, and hit them with her watery wrath. Marvel watched as Melissa floated on her back next to Madge. She couldn't keep her eyes off of Cato, who in turn couldn't keep his off of Clove. He could hardly stand to watch her obsessing over a guy who wanted her sister, when he was ready and waiting for her to open her eyes to him.
…
"I've never liked baseball." Clove declared from the top of the bleachers. The game had just hit the seventh inning stretch, which she thought was pretty pointless anyway, and the only reason she was sitting through the game was because Katniss and Finch were on the team and they wanted them to show 'moral support' or some shit like that.
"Why?" Peeta asked from the row beneath her's.
"I don't know. I just haven't." She shrugged in response.
"Shut up complaining and eat this." Cato shoved a ketchup smothered hot dog into her hand as he returned to the seat on her right.
"I don't want it." Clove tried to hand it back to him, but he pushed her hand away.
"Eat it, skinny." Cato insisted.
"I don't want it! I'm in training!" Clove repeated as the baseball players made their ways back onto the pitch.
"Clove." He shot her a glare. "Eat. The. Hot dog."
"Fine." She scowled at him and bit into it. She wouldn't admit it, but it was delicious. "Happy?"
"Very." Cato smirked and threw his arm around the back of her chair.
"God, do you two ever stop talking?" Annie complained. She was sat next to Clove, leaning against Finnick's shoulder.
"It's annoying." Johanna agreed from in front of them.
"Well, we wouldn't be talking if she'd just taken the hot dog." Cato shrugged his shoulders as Katniss wound back her arm and curved the ball towards the batter.
"I'll burn you." Clove threatened.
"Clove? Is that you?"
Cringing, Clove turned her attention to the owner of the all too familiar voice and prayed that she was wrong about who he was.
"Crap." She muttered. She hadn't been wrong.
"It's been a while." The guy stood in front of them was built like an ox. He held a foam finger that had 'Miami State' written on, the West Palm girls' opponents for the day. He had tanned skin and dark hair, and green eyes the almost exact shade of his t-shirt.
"Bryce. It's been, like, a year." Clove greeted him, smiling awkwardly.
"Mind if I sit?" He asked, and sat down in the seat next to Cato without waiting to hear an answer. "How have you been?"
"Great. I've been great." She said.
"I haven't seen you around in forever." Bryce smiled easily at her, his teeth shining.
"Well when we split up I kind of stopped making day trips to Miami." Clove responded, raising an eyebrow at him.
"Right." Bryce rubbed the back of his neck with the foam finger.
"Care to introduce us?" Cato asked, looking pointedly at Clove.
"Guys, this is Bryce. Bryce these are my friends Cato, Johanna, Peeta, Annie and Finnick." Clove reluctantly introduced them to each other.
"I thought I told you to never show your face around us again." Johanna said, narrowing her eyes at him.
"I saw you up here and thought I should say hi. Like I said, it's been forever." Bryce said with a stiff jaw.
"What's going on here? It's damn awkward." Finnick asked.
"Bryce and Clove dated for eight months during her sophomore year until he cheated on her last May. I told him to never speak to her again but apparently linebacker over here didn't take the hint." Johanna explained, not taking her gaze off of Bryce.
"I was drunk." Bryce objected. "It was an obvious mist-"
"You need to leave." Clove cut him off and glared at him. "I'm over you and you have no right to come over here like we're some old friends. I don't care about you anymore."
"Clove-"
"She said leave." Cato stood up and folded his arms across his chest.
"You don't own me." Bryce stood up to face Cato and copied his stance.
"Oh for God's sake, you two." Annie sighed and stood up as well. "Stop acting like bears during mating season and Bryce you can just fuck the hell off."
"Annie!" Peeta, and everyone else within hearing distance, looked shocked. Annie had never even really cursed before.
"He's annoying my friends." She shrugged as Finnick fist bumped her.
"Whatever." Bryce muttered, and slunk off to join the rest of his school.
"Damn." Clove muttered, rubbing the space in between her eyebrows with her thumb.
"You okay?" Cato sat back down and spoke with a lowered voice.
"Yeah. I'm so over him, he's not worth my time. It's just…A shock, you know?"
"Trust me, I know." He said, and the look on his face made him seem one thousand years older.
