He can feel his heart pounding in his chest, hear it thumping in his ears. His lifeblood is leaking out on the floor, and he can hear Shishio's laughter ringing behind that stuttering thump.
Ba-dum. Ba-dum. Ba-dum.
He thinks of how easy it woud be to let go, to let that heavy rhythm stop. Over and over, he has survived what would destroy another: cholera, Aku Soku Zan, his own guilt, the ougi. Hasn't he done enough?
But then he remembers blue eyes, and knows he must live. Live!
