Lena returned to the small bedroom she shared with her brother, who was sleeping. She always came back late and woke up early so her Teddy wouldn't see the bruises she got from her 'father'.
Austin had been abusing her for about 6 months now, and she didn't want Lucas to know. Austin said that if she told anybody, he would kill her.
August 2011
Waking up, all Lena saw was white. Then came the beeping. She was in a hospital!
Ugh, why was her leg so heavy? She looked down and saw a bulky blue cast covering her left ankle. Oh, that's right. Austin had let his horse, Max, trample her. It wasn't like she was going to tell. She'd just say she . . . fell in the stables or something. Lucas wouldn't believe her, but it was better than telling him the truth.

Lena left the letter on his bedside table, next to his alarm. It was basically a goodbye saying that if they ever saw each other again, she'd promise to tell him why she left. Ish. She'd tell the censored version.
But she would cross that bridge when she came to it. No, if she came to it. The odds of them seeing each other again were 5729384 to 1. Oh, about that. Lena was kind of a genius.
She went outside and saddled her horse, Moonlight, riding away into the night.
