March 25th
"We're so glad to have you girls back for this wonderful time," Aunt Ethel sang as we sat at the dining table for dinner.
"Home has been awfully quiet without both you and Matthew," my mother said as she bought the food to the table. Everyone sat down and started talking, waiting for the person to fill the empty seat beside me.
"Sorry I'm late," Danny said bursting through the doors at least ten minutes later. "My boss left me in charge later than I thought."
"Come quickly son, food's still hot," Uncle Johnnie told him. Danny smiled gratefully. He took the seat beside me and said a small hello, everyone's eyes on us.
"Come on, don't stop the love because of us," my father said laughing. Half of the table still thought we were madly in love, the other half knew we were fighting like two cock's in a cock fight.
"When we were young, we kissed one another all the time!" Aunt Ethel winked. Rafe pretended to gag, earning a slap from his mother.
"Anyway, shouldn't all the love be focussed on Ethan and Lindy?" Abbie swooped in. I sighed in thanks and she squeezed me hand under the table.
"Yes, the big day is tomorrow," Matt smiled at his best friend. "He's come a long way since his cooties days."
"That was only two years ago," Rafe joked. The table laughed and Lindy looked confused.
"What does that mean?" she asked her husband-to-be.
"It means nothings," Ethan said embarrassed.
"It means," Matt chimed in, doing his bit as best friend, "that he actually thought all girls had a syndrome known as cooties."
"Oh my gosh! How old were you?" she asked laughing.
"Eighteen or nineteen, I can't remember," Aunt Ethel said.
"Well, I had to make sure I wouldn't catch it," Ethan shrugged his shoulders, a cheeky smile on his face.
"Well, it's a good thing you got over that fear. Tomorrow might've not been happening," she said kissing him on the cheek.
"My first child's wedding! I don't think I'm ever going to be so excited for a wedding, ever!" Aunt Ethel continued.
"What about mine?" Abbie asked slightly wounded.
"Maybe, but you're my third child. So by then Rafe would've gotten married and I'll be over it," Aunt Ethel joked.
"As if Rafe will get married," Danny laughed.
"That's true. I don't think he's had a girlfriend for more than a week," I joined in.
"They start to get boring after a while," Rafe shrugged while shoving his face.
"Clearly never getting married then. Till death do we part is not his style," my Dad joked.
"Nonsense, one day you'll find a girl who you can't stand to be without," my mother told him.
"I'm afraid my Dad's already married her," he smiled cheesily. The table roared in an outburst.
"Stop being a suck up!"
"Mummy's boy!"
"That's enough everyone," Aunt Ethel's voice carried across the table, "it's true. Without me he;d forget his head."
"Well where is it?" Danny muttered only loud enough for me to hear. I chuckled slightly. He shot me a sad sort of smile and rejoined the conversation.
After dinner Abbie and I sat on the porch whilst everyone sat inside getting drunk. It would not be a pretty picture tomorrow morning. We were sensible, keeping to the tea as we knew we'd be on full alert to fix any disaster before it happens.
"Cannot believe my brother is getting married," Abbie sighed.
"Cannot believe we're this old. I feel like just yesterday we used to roll in the lake," I joked.
"Life is certainly passing by us," she said sighing.
"Much more fast than I had ever anticipated," I told her.
"Speaking of fast, have you and Danny made up fast?" she asked. "It seems whenever we're back home, you're always at each other's throats."
"We are not. Twice have I come back and we'd been in a midst of a fight," I pointed out.
"It doesn't matter. You guys still fight more than you ever did."
"Well, it's hard for us being so far apart," I told Abbie sternly.
"I know, I know," she said surrendering. "I just want you both to be happy."
"And we will be, when we're ready too. If he needs time before he wants to talk then so be it."
"That was very mature," she congratulated me.
"Because I am mature," I said smirking.
"It's comments like that, that make me second guess you," she giggled.
"Well what about you and Matty, what's going on there?" I asked.
"Well, I'm starting to make arrangements to transfer to a college closer to hoe and we're happy despite the tiffs about him getting drunk and knocking on our door to make him better."
"I swear, he needs to learn his limit. I bet you tomorrow morning, he'll still be as drunk as a skunk," I told her.
"Ethan will have to go without a best man," Abbie laughed.
"You kidding? Matty will still be beside him, with a spew bucket in tow," I joked. Abbie howled in laughter. It wasn't that funny, but in this moment we couldn't care and just laughed and laughed.
"You girls seem to be having an awful good time," Danny's voice said.
"Your girl is just too funny," Abbie said, still giggling softly.
"Really?" he asked feigning surprise.
"She is," she paused. "Anyway, I'm going in to get more tea and stop everyone from getting rolling drunk."
I passed her my cup and she gave me a sly wink.
"She's about as subtle as a gun," Danny said taking a seat next to me.
"That's Abbie. I mean all the McCawley's are like that," I pointed out to him.
"You've got that right," Danny said.
"Seems to be the only thing I have gotten right," I spat.
"Charlotte," he started.
"No, I should've called as soon as I found out. It was selfish for me to put it off because of my own pain. I should've been thinking about you and your pain."
"You were, I got the card," he smirked.
"No, I really did try to get down here for the funeral, it just wasn't possible," I told him.
"That I understood, I'll always except that your schooling is your future and it comes first especially if there is no other way. What I didn't get was how you went out and spent all hours of the morning with Jeremy," Danny said twiddling with him thumbs. He looked at me with such hurt in his eyes and worry that the worst may have happened.
"I would never," I told him.
"Pain makes people do crazy things," he said.
"I would never cheat on you Danny. I was just very tired and sick and sad and I'm pretty sure he just fell asleep on accident while he made sure he was okay," I told him.
"Was it a distraction from the real problem?" he asked hopefully.
"Yes, we went out after knowing because we didn't know how to handle the situation," I shrugged.
"Okay," Danny said.
"Okay?" I asked him.
"Yeah."
"Look, Danny I just feel as if we're having the same fight all the time," I told him honestly.
"Well as long as Jeremy is around I guess we will, but if that's the way it is, then I'd rather fight with you than for you," he smiled sadly.
"Why not for me?" I asked.
"Because, I'd rather have you than lose you," he explained.
"As long as you want me, you'll have me." I moved to his lap and he kissed me hard. This was us and I understood it. We fought and we made up, that was it. But we knew we'd love each other with every fibre in our being.
"Deserts is ready," Abbie said walking out onto the porch but stopping short when she saw us. "Of course, I guess you two have already had desert."
Danny pulled away embarrassed and set of beside him. "We'll be in soon." The blush and cheeky grin on his face were enough to make me forget all the fighting and remember the love. Abbie returned inside and Danny grabbed my hand, pulling me up and taking me inside for a different kind of desert than to what we'd just tasted.
March 26th
"Get up Lindy, it' your big day," Abbie sang as we walked into her room that morning. She was still fast asleep and there was a lot to do.
"No," she moaned.
"Why? You're getting married!" I said pulling the sheets off her.
"My life will be over, I'll be doomed to be like my mother," she continued as she turned around to face us.
"Oh come on, she's not that bad," Abbie joked.
"Are you serious!?" Lindy replied.
"Is there something else going on here? You seemed perfectly happy to be getting married at dinner last night," I asked her.
"Well, last night I still had one more night of freedom. I mean, I didn't even have a bachelorette party! And getting married just seems like an awful big step," she said getting out of bed only to move in front of her vanity and slump down on the chair there.
"We weren't aware you wanted one," Abbie said.
"I wasn't aware until you awoke me this morning," she shrugged.
"Look, you need to start getting ready. You can't have cold feet now," I told her undoing her many curlers from her hair.
"I don't have cold feet. I mean I love Ethan, I do. It's just that, marriage is so big," she said emphasising the 'so'.
"Well, we'll take little steps. First start with a shower while we have a bachelorette breakfast party," Abbie suggested.
"Okay, I can do that," Lindy smiled. She got up and took her things away to the bathroom and left us.
"How can we have a bachelorette breakfast party? Really?" I asked Abbie, an eyebrow raised in question.
"I don't know, we'll put champagne in the orange juice," she shrugged. She went off to make the breakfast and I straightened up in Lindy's room, readying all the things we'd need to turn her into a beautiful, blushing bride.
"I'm just so excited," Mary, Lindy's mother beamed.
"Wait till you see her Ms."
"You girls will not disappoint. You both look stunning too," Lindy's father said, snapping a picture. The dresses both Abbie and I were wearing were light pink. They had two straps, that crossed at the back which wrapped around and tied at the front in a bow. The material was the softest silk and it shone brightly. The were floor length and sleeveless and so daring for our little town. We loved it.
"I'm coming," Lindy called from her hallway. We heard the door close and the heels start to make their way towards us. When she emerged around the corner, her parents gasped.
"Oh my goodness, Lindy," her mother cooed.
Lindy had taken Abbie's idea and modernised her mother dress. The ruffles we basically not existent. Lindy had kept the lace on the bodice, but mad the dress backless and tight fitting, the sleeves like a butterfly as they fell softly on her shoulders and down the back. The ruffles that were on top of the dress were moved underneath to the bottom so it flared a little.
Her hair was in a very elegant chignon, her vale pinned at the top and would soon be pushed back by her father when she made it to the front of the church to marry Ethan.
"You're the most beautiful bride I've ever seen," her father gushed.
"Come on you two," she said her voice bubbling with tears. "We're going to be late."
"Let me take a photo first dear," he father said as he snapped one of her by herself and then with her mother, and a last one with Abbie and I.
"Alright, we really will be late now," Abbie said. She shooed the family out of the house as we got into the very beautiful, polished wedding car the town owned and made our way to the Church.
When we got there, the doors were opened wide. People were seated and waiting as the high school orchestra played sweet music.
"Are you ready?" I asked before I opened the door. She nodded and we all piled out. The town photographer taking picture as we helped her.
Her mother walked inside to take her place, dabbing her tears as she went. The rest of us piled up the stairs and waited for the wedding march to play. It started and I walked down the isle first, people eyes watching. My father and mother smiled proudly, Rafe winked, so did Matty and Ethan nodded in what I thought was thanks. When I made it to the front, I took my position, waiting for Abbie to join me. Danny caught my eye and smiled brightly. This day was starting to get more beautiful than ever.
The congregation stood as Lindy and her father started towards Ethan and the priest. I looked to Ethan who was in shock. He was so happy and smiled softly, knowing that there was no where else he'd rather be in that moment
When they reached the end of the isle, her father kissed her on the cheek and pushed back her vale. He shook hands with Ethan and then joined Lindy's hand with his and took his seat. Tears starting to form in his eyes. Ethan gasped when Lindy first turned to look at him and Abbie chuckled. She'd never seen her brother so in love.
"We are gathered here today..." the priest started. Every took their seats and began to watch the promise that was about to be made before God.
After the ceremony, when everyone had watched Ethan and Lindy McCawley leave the Church to take photos around town, they dispersed the gossip with one another and hitch rides together to the reception at the McCawley farm.
I, however, made my down to the cemetery by taking the path that led behind the church. I still hadn't been to Mr. Walker's grave and now that I had flowers, I thought it may have been a perfect time. I worried about taking long to find his grave, but it wasn't even five minutes before I saw Danny standing over one
I walked up to him slowly, lifting my dress to not get it dirty and walked carefully between the headstones as if not to step on anybody.
"Hey," I said once I made it next to him.
"Hi beautiful," he said putting his arms around me.
"Beautiful day isn't it?" I asked him. It truly was, the sun was shining the breeze was warm. Most unusual as it was still a month or two out of winter.
"Very. Ethan and Lindy look very happy," he smiled.
"They are, despite Lindy getting a little case of cold feet this morning," I laughed softly.
"Lindy too? Ethan was a muck. Luckily Matthew straightened him out," Danny smiled.
"Clearly they are perfect for one another," I pointed out.
"Clearly," he agreed. I looked down on the modest headstone of Danny's father that was placed to Danny's mother. He truly was alone in this world. I bent down and placed my bouquet of lilies between the two. When I stood back up he grabbed my hand and squeezed lightly.
"We should go," he whispered.
"You don't want to stay a little longer?" I asked.
"Nah, I'll come back next week as always," he smiled.
"Okay," I said. We walked away, leaving behind the people of the past to go and celebrate with the people of our present and future.
Once we got to the reception, it was in full swing as people drank and ate whilst waiting for the bride and groom to arrive. And once they did it was all out madness. The band Lindy's parents had hired for the event were magnificent as people hardly sat down and kicked off their shoes to let loose. If the people down south knew one thing, it was how to throw a wedding.
"Charlotte dear," Mrs. Jones greeted me at the table Danny and I were sitting on.
"Mrs. Jones, it's wonderful to see you! It's been so long," I smiled at her.
"How is New York?" she asked taking a seat.
"New York is wonderful. It's keeping me busy and away from home," I laughed.
"I'm sure Danny misses you," she said smiling at him.
"I do, I do."
"Well how's school? Tell me all about it," Mrs. Jones said as other ladies I'd grown up visiting took a seat to listen too.
"School is wonderful. Sarah Lawrence is really what everyone says it is. The campus is amazing, it has some of the nicest teachers. The people are fantastic."
"A heap of new friends I hope?" Mrs. Johnson asked.
"Oh yes, the girls who live next door, Shellie and Millie and practically always in our room. We're always going out together on weekends to the clubs or dancing. New York is more fantastic during the night than day," I told them.
"Who takes you dancing?" someone asked.
"Oh, some of our friends. I met this boy named Jeremy and his friend James has this uncle who converted an old speak easy into a dancing club and it's absolutely about as much fun as it would've been back in the 20's," I replied.
"Tell me more about these boys," Susan Jones asked winking.
"Well, Jeremy is rather intelligent. He is from England and comes from a long line of lawyers. So he's here studying and trying to see the world before he joins the family business. He really is a great person."
"Oh Mama, can I please go to Sarah Lawernce," Susan pleaded.
"If I send you all the way to New York, you better be focusing on more than just boys Su," her mother scolded.
"No promises," Susan sighed.
"Excuse me," Danny said taking his leave. I hardly noticed him leave and continued my conversation with the ladies around me. It was long before I noticed his absence. I had to get out of here and find him, I'd hardly spent anytime dancing with him today.
"Sorry ladies, I'm afraid I've neglected my bridesmaids duties for far too long," I said. They laughed, nodded and let me go. I walked around trying to find Danny, only to find him down by the river, a good 20 metres away from the party, skipping rocks.
"You have to be the saddest person at this wedding," I said walking up to him.
"I am."
"And why's that?" I said as I placed my hands on his shoulders and leant against him.
"Because, I'm afraid my girl friend loves someone else more than me," he said shrugging me off him.
"Danny I thought we'd sorted this out," I said confused.
"So did I, until I realised you're happier talking about Jeremy than you are talking to me."
"That isn't true," I told him.
"Then why do your eyes light up and why do you smile like he's the best thing. However when you're with me, you seem bored."
"I'm not bored with you, I'm comfortable and in love and down right crazy about you. I'm sorry, my giddiness has worn off after we've been dating for nine months. Because my feelings are more than that.
"Look Char, I thought I could handle you being friends with Jeremy. Turns out I can't. And I don't want to fight anymore but," he paused.
"But what Danny! But what? I don't know what you want me to do anymore," I shouted.
"But I can't handle you spending so much time with him. I just want you to distance yourself. I still feel as if wants more then friendship from you."
"So what? You're telling me who I can and can't be friends with now?" I yelled.
"No-"
"Well that's what it sounds like. It's like you think you own me. Well guess what I don't see any ring on my finger," I spat.
"I don't think I own you, I think I have a right to keep you safe however," he spat back.
"What and I'm not safe when we go on group outings? I've done everything you want me to Danny. I told him about you and made sure he knew where he stood and guess what, you were wrong about everything. He had a girlfriend!"
He paused for a second, "Did you ever meet her? Abbie said you never did and he still kept flirting despite you telling him about me."
"And why were you talking to Abbie about this? Did you get her to spy on me?" I shouted. Before he could answer I started again, my rage causing a continuous flow of words. "You're acting like a child who cannot handle the lack of attention!"
"I'm a child!? My god Charlotte, you're beginning to become delusional if you think this is all about me!"
"Isn't everything these days? In case you haven't noticed, every fight we've had lately is because you're insecure and jealous of Jeremy's presence and affection," I shouted, walking closer to bridge the gap between us.
"You think that's what I'm worried about? The feelings Jeremy had for you and my insecurity?"
"What else then?" I asked him, narrowing my eyes.
"I'm worried about the feelings you have for him! It's so god damn obvious in your letters and the way you talk about him!"
"Daniel Walker, how dare you go and accuse me of such things! You know I would never, never hurt you or cheat!"
"Yes, but I do not know if you would think twice about harbouring feelings for another even if you had me!" he yelled. It wasn't true what he was saying. I hadn't even thought about him like that until Danny had mentioned it.
"I told you that you have to trust me! We knew that this was going to be about trust and you can't even do that. Come on Danny, just try and trust me," I pleaded with him.
"I can't," he said slowly, pulling me towards him. "I love you but I can't," he said kissing me. I pushed him away and wiped my mouth. He'd never disgusted me more than in this minute.
"Don't you dare touch me! How can you love and not trust!?" I asked.
"Come Char, this is what we do. We fight and make up."
"Maybe we shouldn't. We seem to have this same fight over and over again. I'm sick and tired of it!"
"Yeah well, I'm sick and tired of hearing about Jeremy every five minutes."
"Well, I guess I'll stop talking to you about him," I said.
"Whatever," he said walking away from me, fed up with it all just as I was.
"Don't walk away from me Daniel," I yelled to him.
"And why not?" he said turning around defiantly.
"You can either stay here and we'll work things out or you can walk away and it'll be the last time you ever do," I said giving him an ultimatum. He stood there, shocked, but his mouth turned into a hard line and he couldn't speak.
After a few seconds he said, "So if I walk away, we're over?" he asked.
"It's up to you. I know you love me and you know I love you and if you walk you're throwing away everything we have because of some guy that you've never even met."
He stood there taking this in and I had a sinking feeling in my stomach. "Is this what you want?" he asked.
"No, but it's up to you," I told him.
"Okay," he said.
"Okay?" I asked confused. And without replying he turned his back on me and walked away, breaking my heart into a billion little pieces.
Please don't forget to R&R!
Much love! xx
