To guest: I apologise to! She belongs with Danny, but is it really for the best?

November 1st

Danny moped around as he and Rafe attempted to fix the crop duster. He wasn't paying attention, he hardly listened to Rafe about what tool he needed now and Rafe had just about had enough.

"That's it," he huffed.

"What?" Danny replied.

"You and this whole sad, broken hearted man."

"Who said I broken hearted?" Danny asked, going back to his work.

"Cut the crap boy. I've known you since we've been in nappies, and if I know one thing, it's that you always mope and lose concentration when you're upset."

"Who are you? My mother?" Danny replied as he walked to the tool box and pulled out a wench.

"I'll smack you," Rafe warned.

"I don't understand what you're on about. I'm fine," Danny insisted.

"You're not fine! You haven't been fine since you found out that your dear Char, has another man."

"What do you expect me to be like then?" Danny burst. His emotional side always got the better of him after Rafe made sarcastic jokes. This time was no exception.

"Finally, we get to it," Rafe smirked.

"Shut up."

"So, you are angry?" Rafe asked.

"What else can I be?" Danny asked. "I'm not going to pretend to be happy about the fact that the girl I love is on the other side of the country, dating some fancy english man."

"Look, you walked away," Rafe pointed out.

"And you don't think that I regret that, everyday since?" Danny asked.

"Well then why don't you go to New York and get her back?" Rafe asked.

"It's not that simple," Danny shrugged.

"It is Danny."

"Rafe, I cannot just waltz back into her life. She hates me. You saw the way she looked at me last time she was here. She even left because of me."

"You were being an ass," Rafe pointed out.

"Whose side are you on?" Danny asked frustrated.

"I was on yours, at the beginning when she went out with Jeremy and all that instead of calling, but now, I'm in the middle. I want what's best for both of you."

"And what's best then?" Danny asked.

"You, getting your sorry behind on a train and heading to New York."

They went back to their work. That topic was left untouched the rest of the day. And that night when Danny returned home, he opened his drawer and pulled out a box. He'd saved everything he'd received from Charlotte, or every movie ticket he paid for, every napkin she'd drawn on when they went out for dinner. He looked through them, smiling at some and frowning at others at the mention of Jeremy.

He should've believed her. Even when they'd broken up, Jeremy hadn't tried anything. Instead her boyfriend now was his cousin. She'd been right all along and he'd been to stupid to see it. Everything she'd said was true and he couldn't help but want to kick himself.

He put the contents back into the box and pulled out his money sock, that was tucked in the back of one of his old shoeboxes. He took out the right amount of money and set it aside. The first thing he was going to do tomorrow morning, was by an open ticket for New York, so he could leave when he decided the time was right.

November 15th

I walked out of class, wrapping my cardigan around me. It was starting to get cold again and I really didn't like it. I was meeting Charlie for dinner and had to rush home so I could start getting ready. I moved through the crowd of people and finally got to the gate.

I was about to haul a cab, when across the road I saw someone I never thought I'd see again. Danny. He jogged over and came to stand in front of my frozen state.

"Hi," he grinned, his southern twang so evident in his voice, his smile as big as they could be.

"Hi," I squeaked back. "What are you doing here?"

"I'm here to see you," he said. I rubbed my head, I could feel a headache start to come on. What on earth did he possibly want?

"Okay," I stuttered trying to put the pieces together.

"I know this must be a surprise but-" I cut him off. He was far to confident and friendly. Didn't we send each other death stares the last time we were in the same room?

"A surprise! Danny you're in New York! This is not a surprise but a hindrance!"

"A hindrance? I thought you'd be excited," he said.

"And why would you think that?" I asked, my accent coming through as I got frustrated.

"I came here to see you. To patch things up with you."

"I think it's a little late for that."

"So what? You're saying it really is over?"

"You walked away from me Danny!" I yelled, forgetting we were in the middle of the street and attracting attention.

"I made a mistake and I have regretted it since the day you left the wedding!"

"Well why didn't you tell me then!?" I yelled. My hands flew to my stomach, as if trying to hold in the nausea that was suddenly bought on.

"Because, you hated me!"

"You think I hated you? I loved you. I sat around and moped and cried, waiting, wishing and hopin I'd receive a letter from you or a call!" I told him.

"Yeah, and I still love you! This isn't over between us," he said taking my face in his hands. "You're my girl."

"Danny stop," I said, my lip wobbling as I tried to contain sobs. He was saying everything I'd wanted to hear and my heart ached for him, but I loved Charlie. I was enagaged to Charlie.

"Don't tell me to stop when I know you love me to. I can tell," he paused, "say it. Say you love me too."

The tears came out, as he knew that I did in fact still hold love for him in my heart.

"Say it," he pleaded. I sobbed and sobbed until I couldn't hold it in anymore.

"Yes, I love you I do," I told him.

"Then what's wrong? Just tell Charlie it's over and things can go back to the way they were," he smiled, hopeful.

"I can't," I told him, my hands coming up to rest on my chest. He looked down at them, his hopeful smile turned to a face laced with pain.

"What's that?" he stepped back looking at my hand.

"Danny, please."

"What is that Char?" he asked nervously.

"I can't be with you, Danny. I'm engaged to Charlie," I said holding up my hand. His face dropped, his smile gone and I swear I could feel his hope and his heart break with those words.

"You said you didn't want to be tied down," he said. His breathing was getting heavier, as it always did when he was angrier.

"I'm not, we're waiting until he gets back from the war."

"How could you?" Danny asked. I gasped in shock. How could I what? Move on from the heartbreak he caused?

"Like I said, you walked away from me!"

"But I came back to you! I thought that was a given."

"How am I meant to know you'd come back? You haven't written or called or anything! It's too late Danny!"

"But you love me!" he cried out. He couldn't believe what was happening and neither could I. Our whole history was aired out on the streets. People had stopped talking, silently listening from their spots on the curb.

"What did you expect? For things to be the same? For me to mope around while you made up your mind to come back to me!?"

"I thought you loved me more than this," he said gesturing to his betrayal.

"And I thought you loved me more when you walked away, but people are wrong in assuming things."

He stood their, as did I. I hurriedly wiped away my tears when I saw Millie walk over.

"What's going on?" she asked, sensing the tension and the quietness of the street around us.

"Nothing."

"You call this nothing?" Danny asked, his hands flying to his wounded heart.

"It's over Danny," I told him, a new set of tears rolling away from my control.

"Char, come on," he said softly, almost pleadingly.

"I think you should go," Millie said, stepping between us.

"Char?" Danny asked.

"That's enough," Millie said pushing him away. I looked down at my feet, unable to watch him as he walked away from me. Millie turned around when he was gone and I threw myself into her arms. If only he had come earlier.

We both left that day with broken hearts. I loved Danny and he loved me but it was too late for us. It was just too late.
