Hey readers! Another chapter for you! This is the first chapter that ties in to the movies! Hope you all enjoy!
To McFlytheMusical: I'm glad you love this story! I do too! I know, she did love him, but she also loves Charlie and he hasn't broken her heart yet! However, this chapter has jumped a year and a bit, so who knows what will happen under the sun in Hawaii?
To islandgirl884: I love her with both too! More suspense in this chapter too!
To Guest: I cannot make Charlotte do anything, this girl has her own path! ;)
Enjoy!
1 and a half years later
February 12th
They'd called us in today to do physicals for new recruits, as well as some old. Being a nurse for the navy did have it's upsides, but I really couldn't think about that.
I'd changed my major at school, from writing to medicine as soon as Charlie shipped off for England. It was different and not what I thought I'd do in a million years, but I knew that soon enough, they'd need more of us and it was my duty. When I did change it though, I couldn't help think of Danny and what he would say. He'd probably make me feel guilty, after all I fought with him to pursue my dreams of being a writer.
I had hardly been home either. Nothing was left for me there. I only returned for the wedding, but by that time, Danny and Rafe had been shipped to Long Island and to be honest, I didn't worry me if he was there. I stayed until the baby was born. My beautiful little nephew Jackson. He had his mothers eyes and his father temper.
"Nurse Bayor and Andrews to the physical station," the lady in charge boomed. Betty shook me hard out of my thoughts and we walked away from Evelyn, Martha and Sandra to go and look over the men.
"Maybe I'll meet my Prince Charming," she smiled dreamily.
"Hush Betty, you're only 17 remember," I said raising an eyebrow.
"Seventeen and never been kissed," she winked as we prepared the station.
"Don't lie to me, I've seen you kiss plenty of men," I smirked, my accent getting stronger. She laughed at it. Apparently I sounded exotic to her.
"Ready for the first patient?" she asked.
"Ready," I said. She called the man in and he took a seat on the bed.
"Shirt and pants off please," I smiled sweetly.
"You're not going to jab me are you?" his heavy Jersey accent asked cautious.
I laughed as I looked over his file, "Calm down Mr. Fusco, we only check for damage to your bones and muscles," I told him.
"But beware of the nurse with the curly hair, she'll jab you nice and hard," Betty joked. I walked over to him and bent him over, letting my fingers follow the curve in his spine.
"You both single?" he asked, his voice squashed by his awkward position.
"Slight curve of the spine, nothing too major," I told Betty as she wrote it down.
"I am, but she's spoken for," Betty said slowly.
"That's too bad," he muttered. I pulled his body up and lifted his arms, pushing along the muscles for any wear and tear he may have endured during training.
"Not for my fiancee," I told him laughing.
"Can I at least as your name?" he smiled.
"I guess you can if you have no trouble speaking," I told him smartly. I found a little soft spot in his right bicep and pushed. He squirmed. "A little sore?"
He bit his lip but none the less replied, "Not much."
"Tear in the right bicep," I told Betty. She jotted that down too.
"The least you can do after feeling me up is give me a name," he smirked.
"Charlotte Andrews," I told him begrudgingly. Anything to shut up the slightly cocky and annoiyng pilot.
"Have we met before, it sounds familiar. Maybe you know one of my friends," he said thinking it over.
"Maybe," I ran along his shoulder, noting the tension and squeezed again, he really winced this time. Maybe he was friends with Danny or Rafe and they mentioned me or something? Maybe that's why it was familiar.
"Not there sweetheart, I strained it a little when fixing the plane," he winced.
"More like tore the muscle," I told him. Betty wrote it down and sighed.
"That's it for today," she smiled at him. He put his clothes back on and took his leave, not without a sly wink and a pat on the butt.
"Don't these boys know how to treat a lady?" I asked Betty, bewildered some could be so forward.
"This is New York Lottie, the men here aren't gentlemen like your english man," she smiled. She signed off on Mr. Fusco's file and handed it to me. "Take this to Evelyn, I think she's on the sight station."
I nodded and walked off. Every time I was alone at one of these places, I couldn't help but search around for a familiar face. I knew it would be an awful long shot if Danny was here, but the last time I'd heard about him was that he was stationed in New York. More precisely Long Island, but they did have to get checked too.
What would I even say if I did run into him? We left things so muddled and confused and now I had no doubt in my mind he really did hate me as much as I pretended to hate him.
As I searched around I wasn't looking where I was going and walked right into someone, dropping my file.
"I'm sorry," I muttered as I bent down to pick up the papers. Whoever I walked into bent down too, gathering the file they'd dropped.
"My fault ma'am," a strong southern voice filled the air. My heart stopped. It couldn't be. I shoved the papers back into the file but not before I checked to see I hadn't mixed them up with the ones from the other persons file. The name I saw was not Anthony Fusco, but Daniel Walker.
"I think I have some of your papers," he said nervously, obviously not realising who I was as I had my face hidden the entire time. He took them out and held them in front of me. I couldn't even think because I was so shell shocked. All my dreaming and wondering what this meeting would be like and here I was, hiding.
"Ma'am?" he asked again. I took a big breath and looked up. "Char?"
"Here's your papers Danny," I said handing them to him as I took Anthony's.
"You're a nurse?" he asked surprised.
"Have been for some time," I told him. He opened his mouth to say something but was interrupted by a nervous looking Rafe.
"Danny c'mon. My eye test is now and you know how I get, they're going to take my wings if you're not there to help me," he paused to look at who Danny was talking too and not realising it was me started again, "I mean, help me calm down. I can say all kinds of crazy things when I'm nervous."
"I know you do Rafe," I told him. He took a good look at me again and sighed.
"Lots-of-love, it's been a while," he said, scooping me into a hug.
"Well, I haven't been home much and neither have you," I told him.
"Look, we should put everything behind all of us yeah? It's definitely been a long time since everything happened and we've all grown up now," he said. I shook my head and laughed.
"You haven't changed," I smirked.
"No I haven't," he grinned, "Look, I'll see you soon but I gotta go ace this eye thing." Rafe walked off and left Danny and I alone once more.
"Char-" Danny started.
"Um, I have to go drop these to the next nurse for Mr. Fusco."
"It can't wait a minute?" Danny asked.
"Whatever you want to say has already waited a year and a half, what is another day?" I asked him, getting flustered.
"So you'll see me tomorrow then?" he asked cheekily.
"I said nothing of the sort. Just stop playing games," I told him.
"I just wanna-"
"Save your breath," I cut him off again. I don't know why, but I couldn't here what he had to say just yet. My heart was beating faster than it had since I got that letter six months ago and it was all because I'd seen him, in the flesh and could feel myself fall back love with him every time he smiled or winked or even spoke with that twang in his voice. It was up until now that I hadn't realised how much I'd missed him.
"Who was that gorgeous man talking to you today?" Sandra asked me as we left the hall that night. We were sent home early as there was no more for us to be done. We planned on going home and making a nice warm soup for the girls.
"Someone I once used to date," I told her as we walked down the steps that were covered with what seemed to be the last fall of snow during that winter.
"Oh, what's his name!" she said trying to remember.
"Danny," I reminded her.
"Your first love," she cooed.
I shuddered, "I was young," I joked, implying it was a mistake.
"Oh hush, the way you looked at him today almost made me want to remind you of Charlie," she pointed out.
"I don't need to be reminded of him, who knows where he is? I think of him all the time and where he may be," I told her softly.
"I know, I'm sorry. I just meant that, your love for him wasn't a mistake like you sometimes say," she told me.
"No, it really wasn't," I said as I hooked my arm through hers.
We crossed the road to the market, and searched through our bags for money, so it was ready when we needed to pay.
"Hey Charlotte!" a voice called out. I turned around straight away noticing Danny's voice.
"Twice in one day, I must be lucky," I muttered.
"We really need to talk," he said approaching me.
"It's really not a good time," I told him.
"Nonsense, I'll go in and buy the vegetables and you stay out here," Sandra smiled. Danny smiled and introduced himself. Sandra looked chuffed. I only rolled my eyes. In this moment I regretted telling her everything about us that late night during our training.
"You've got five minutes flyboy," I told him. He scoffed and shook his head.
"Why are you being like this?" he asked.
"Like what?" I asked confused.
"Like you have no time for me," he stated, "it's like you don't want anything to do with me anymore."
"It's just the way we left things, that's all," I told him honestly about what was making me so uncomfortable.
"I know, and that was my mistake," he started, "I didn't know and should've stopped when you told me and I was just, madly in love with you."
His words pierced my heart and I couldn't respond. He was always too late, without a doubt.
"Like I said, you walked away from me that day."
"And I never should have," he said nervously, looking at his feet.
"We can't go on like this, always apologising and confessing a love that once was."
"I know, but it's us you know." I nodded understanding. It was us and we'd never be off one another's radar, ever. That was evident as my heart yearned for his hug that I'd missed for so long.
"Why don't we call it friends?" I asked.
He sighed and nodded, "Friends." He stared at me and smiled sadly, "I think we'll be seeing a lot more of each other, Rafe's pretty keen on that nurse Evelyn."
I rolled my eyes, "How long will that last?"
"Who knows?" he replied.
"It has been good to see you Danny," I told him.
"Don't wait another year and a half before I see you again Char," he smiled as Sandra walked out with bags.
"I'll try," I nodded. He moved forward and gave me a kiss on the cheek before nodding to Sandra and walking off in the opposite direction to us.
"Those eyes," Sandra swooned.
"No, it's him," I told her.
"Don't go juggling men now," Sandra joked as we walked off towards our town house we all shared.
"I could never," I nudged her. We crossed the road, carrying the bags, and for the first time in a long time, I smiled a smile that was genuine.
