April 7th
Life was wonderful. We went down to the beach in the afternoon when the boys got off duty and we all had a go at surfing.
I was wadding in he water cheering on Evelyn who'd decided to join us. She shakily stood up on the board and Barbara and I cheered.
"Go Ev!" Martha said as Evelyn swam over to us.
"That was so fun!" she said smiling. The first smile I'd seen in a long time.
"I'm glad you're finally having fun," I told her as she laid on her back and floated on the water beside me. She turned towards me and rolled over in the water, jumping up suddenly.
"I feel guilty though," she said thoughtfully.
"I've known Rafe for years and he'd hate what he's putting you through, so you just gotta be happy," I told her, "for him." She nodded and we wandered up the the beach blankets and towels and sat down, letting the last few rays of light soak into our skin. A while later Evelyn got up with her pen and notebook and walked over to some quiet rocks. No doubt writing to Rafe.
"Hey girly," Danny said smiling and walking over to us with the rest of the boys. He sat down next to me and shook his wet head, sending little sprinkles of water all over me after I'd finished drying off.
"Danny!" I squealed. He could only laugh and pull me into his arms.
"I'm hungry," Betty crooned as Red sat next to her.
"W-We'll go get dinner soon Betty," he told her.
"Let's go now," Martha said. "The sun's setting and it would be great to eat and watch it go down." The rest of the girls nodded and the boys agreed. They all got up and ready to go.
"You coming?" Tony asked. I shook my head.
"I don't wanna leave Ev alone," I explained. They nodded, took our orders and left. Beside me, Danny sighed, his head turned facing Evelyn.
"She still upset about the whole England thing?" he asked turning back to me. I nodded my head.
"She's upset as the rest of us, she just feels it more. We got a lot more of Rafe than she has," I told him.
"He'll be hating how he's making her feel," Danny told me.
"I know, I told her the same thing. I mean, she is trying to have fun, but seeing everyone else with someone makes her miss him even more."
"Would you miss me?" Danny asked stupidly. I practically snorted.
"What do you think?" I asked him rhetorically.
"I want to hear you say it," he said softly.
I sighed and gave in to him, "I would miss you more than the stars in the sky would miss the moon."
"And why is that?" he asked smirking.
I rolled my eyes, "I'd miss you because no one would be here to ask me silly little questions."
"Don't forget that no one would make you make them delicious meals."
"The girls have that covered," I said smiling. I lied back onto the blanket and closed my eyes. I knew our days here in Pearl Harbour were numbered. None of us knew when we'd be shipped out of paradise or when we'd enter the war. My reality could very well be missing Danny like Evelyn did Rafe.
"What's wrong?" Danny asked me. He knew me too well to know when I was quiet I was upset or in a deep thought.
"I just don't want this to end."
"None of us do, but we signed up for a reason," he reminded me. I opened one eye and squinted at him.
"I know that, but what if you go off and I'm left here to worry about you?" I asked him.
"I'd write and so would you. You would go to work and have the girls as company, you may even get shipped off somewhere else to, making it another adventure," he pointed out.
"But what if you don't come back to me?" I asked him again. He lied down on the blanket and wrapped his arm around my bare stomach. "I can't lose you again, or anyone else to this war." I thought of Charlie, whose ring I still wore on my right hand. I couldn't bring myself to take it off yet and Danny understood. It's all I had left of him now. I knew he wasn't coming back.
"I'm the second best flier in the whole army, right after Rafe of course," he answered cockily.
"Come on Danny, be serious."
"What do you want me to say? That you'd find someone else and marry, have babies and move back to Tennessee?" he asked slightly chuffed.
"No-"
"Well even so, I can't say that, because when I do come back, you're marrying me. You're having my babies and we're going to travel around the world with them, ticking off the list and then finally, we'll go back home and grow old together."
"You still want to marry me?" I asked him softly.
"I've always wanted to marry you." I was about to reply when Evelyn returned, a paper crane in her hand and a new letter. She looked like she'd been crying but I didn't ask her if she was alright. She'd hate me if I asked her in front of Danny.
"Where is everyone?" she asked taking a seat. Danny removed his arm from around my stomach and sat up as I propped myself on my elbows.
"Gone to get dinner. We're going to watch the sunset," he told her.
"Feels like home," she said smiling softly. "My family and I used to eat dinner all the time in the backyard, the sun setting on my brothers as they mucked around, my sister as I having to break apart their wrestling matches," she laughed.
"Must be good to have a big family."
"It is and now it's grown," she said as the others returned with bags of food. I sighed in contentment. I never ever wanted to leave this spot. Everyone I loved basically all together. It made me want to cry.
April 22nd
To my darling dearest Lottie,
You'll never guess the fabulous news I have. Jackson is about to become a big brother! I'm about two months along or so and we're all very excited. Your mother had been so helpful too. Between our mothers these children are going to be the most coddled and spoilt children in the entire world! I just can't wait until you get married and have little babies so they can be the best of friends too.
Matthew sends his love. He might not admit to to you, but I know deep down he misses his little sister. No one to tease or joke (I mean there is me, but now that I'm his wife, it's a bit hard). It's getting a bit lonely here. Lindy is pregnant with her second baby too and we can hardly do anything in our state. I wish you were here and you could read to me in your funny little voices or give me makeovers. However, fitting into some of our shared dresses is rather hard for me as of late. You can just have them when you come to visit.
Any news on Charlie? How is Danny? I know you've both been posted to Pearl Harbour so please be nice to each other. I know how you ended things was hard, but you're oldest friends and in this time, you need to find each other again. I haven't had any news from Rafe in a while and I'm guessing it's the same on your end. He says it's hard to send letters quickly.
There is not that much else to say besides Matty and I are trying to buy a house, maybe next time you come you can help me decorate? We always were the best at that!
I'm missing you like crazy Lottie. Even though we hardly see each other and write to one another, I love you always and you're my bestest friend in the whole world.
Love always,
Abbie.
I smiled as I put down the letter. I hadn't heard from Abbie in a while and I finally understood why. Baby number two was on the way. I was slightly saddened by the news of all the wonderful things Abbie and Matt were doing. Starting a family, buying a home, it made me oddly jealous that I was missing out on doing those things. I'm sure in enough time it would happen though. Danny practically proposed on the beach that day.
That's another thing I have to tell her. Danny and I were back together. How would she react? How would all of our families? It was too much to handle right now, so I was almost thankful Betty walked in at that moment.
"Evelyn says we gotta couple of boys coming in," she said bounding over to my desk.
"More sunburn?" I rolled my eyes.
"No! That's just it," she said smiling.
"Well go on."
"They're sending over some boys from the front line. They were captives and they got picked up by the British somewhere in Asia. We're one of the closest allied hospitals, many of them are borderline critical."
"That's rather exciting," I said as I folded away my letter.
"I cannot wait to hear their British accents," Betty said dreamily.
"Red," I reminded her. She rolled her eyes.
"I know, but I can still have a little swoon," she joked. We were broken out of our joking mood by a loud rush in the lobby. We ran out quickly to see five very badly injured men being carried in. One was basically bandaged from head to toe, others in casts and infected cuts. They'd obviously been tortured.
"This one needs surgery. The bone is poking out of his arm!" a medic yelled. Evelyn instructed the medic to the surgery room and the doctors rushed in. The others were taken to the main wing where doctors surveyed them and then let the nurses do the mending if their wounds weren't that bad. I was called over to survey the man who was bandaged head to toe.
"Andrews, he's got third degree wounds and deep lashes in his back as well as bruised ribs. Clean and bandage him up, plenty or morphine and maybe start him on antibiotics, who knows what infections he could've picked up over there." I nodded at the doctor as he moved on. It wasn't hectic in the hospital, but it was more than a bit of sunburned bottom. "Oh, and he has memory loss according to some of the medics that bought him here. He remembers some things, but not others."
"Alright soldier, are you in pain?" I asked him as I undressed him and took of his bandages and carefully as possible.
"I'm not a soldier, I'm a doctor," he told me.
"Can you remember your name?" I asked. He shook his head and hissed when he broke a bit of healing skin.
"Just stay still Doc, we'll get you some morphine and antibiotics soon." He lied still and watched me as I worked, jabbing him with the promised goods. "How's your pain now?" I asked.
"It was a nine when I arrived," he started, "then when I saw you, it dropped to six."
"Just focus on the pain and not me for now," I smiled softly.
"It's about a five, but it'll wear off when this morphine goes out of my system."
"Well we better disinfect you fast before it starts to sting." I worked around the clock. He was burnt on almost every visible part of his body. The poor thing tried his best not to wince as I cleaned and stitched his skin. When I was done you could see the creamy colour of his skin, however it was then covered by bandages. He was almost unrecognisable.
"Hows your pain now?" I asked him when I had finished. They had come in during the late afternoon and I'd only finished at 8:30. Everyone had basically left the hospital that had a day shift. I was on over time now.
"It's a seven. The morphine has worn off."
"The antibiotics would've too," I said walking over to the cabinet. I got two more viles of liquid and a glass of water for him. I jabbed him and then lifted him up slowly. He was in pain, I could tell, but he also must've been thirsty.
"Clean water, what a sight," he said, struggling to talk.
"Slowly now," I told him as I poured it into his mouth. He basically sculled it. I lied him back down and he smiled through all the bandages.
"You're a good nurse," he said cheekily.
"You're a good patient," I smiled.
"You know, your face looks familiar," he said softly.
"Look Doc, the medic said you have lost some of your memory. How is it you cannot remember your own name but my face when we've never met?" I asked him laughing.
"You don't know that," he said, his accent making me swoon. Betty was right. It's wonderful.
"Well, maybe you'll remember your name next time we're in and we can work it out," I joked.
"I'll try my hardest," he said. I bid goodbye and signed out of the hospital. I felt sorry for the Doc, he was in Hawaii with no memory of his identity. It was going to be a lonely few weeks for him here. John Doe's hardly ever found their families.
Don't forget to review! Much love! xx
