Zak was glad, no thrilled to be back in school. Doyle had been hounding him with so many questions. His head actually started to hurt. As a bonus to going to school, he and Wadi had to ride with Tony. Which also entailed him leaving the car with a bright red, embarrassed face. He hurried to class, avoiding anyone and everyone. He ran so fast he didn't notice how many people were staring at him. He got back from "vacation" early and before he left, put on quite a performance. He seemed more, human. More approachable.
When he got into his classroom a shadow loomed over his desk. He expected anyone of four things, a nerd, a jock, a teacher or Wadi. He glanced up to see one of the cheerleaders. He recalled what happened before he left.
"Look I'm sorry for the chaos that Wadi and I caused," he said so she'd go away. Her eyes went wide.
"You can talk?" she asked stupidly. Zak wanted to smack her. He chose not to talk. He had a strong enough voice to yell over everyone in the school. He suppressed his anger and pulled out a notebook. The one with the picture of the stone. He ignored her eyes that stared intently at him. Zak could fell the eyes of other students on him. He thought it was because she was talking to him. But in reality, many people were envious that she had the guts to talk to him. He was just too weird.
But after running with actual emotion, people wanted to talk to him. He was the only person who could keep Wadi from stealing their things.
"Cool drawing," said another voice. He turned to see another classmate. He only recognized him because they had been going to the same school for years. But even so, Zak only knew Wadi. And that was not by choice.
"Thanks," he said softly. The cheerleader and the art guy were a little too close for comfort in Zak's book. He reached for his necklace and twirled it in his fingers. Something else he didn't see that day was a member from the yearbook committee walk down the hall for last minute pictures. Taking them at random, got a shot of Zak and his baby ring.
Zak was unaware that that one picture of him would be in the yearbook. It only seemed to get quiet when the teacher walked in and told everyone to get in there seats. He began with a boring lecture that Zak already knew. It was a mythology class after all. He was raised on it ever since he was found.
A few hours later school was finally over. He ran into the guys' restroom and just sat in there. Even Wadi had enough common sense not to enter the boys' bathroom. He sat there for a long time. He really didn't want to leave. He didn't like it there, but it was better than returning to the Saturday house. He sighed. Quietly he slipped his hand into his pocket. His eyes flew open when he felt a familiar cool object. He pulled it out of his pocket slowly.
A cell phone. His cell phone. He quickly punched in a number. He waited nervously as the phone rang.
"Hello?" came a tired and familiar voice.
"Uncle Rook!" said Zak excitedly.
"Zak? Zak! Where are you?" he asked quickly.
"At school. I was kidnapped by Doyle."
"I'll be right there. Don't get near him," he ordered. Zak hung up the phone. Not even a minute and it felt like a great weight was lifted from his chest. He smiled softly. His eyes were droopy. He closed them as he was waiting for Van Rook to come and get him.
Tony
"I can not get Zak out of the bathroom," said Wadi with a frown. Tony looked at her. She seemed crestfallen. Almost broken hearted.
"Don't worry. White star was never good about showing his emotions," he answered.
"White star?" she asked as his phone started to blare "It's peanut butter jelly time!"
"Gotta take this," he said flipping the phone open, "Hello?"
His face kept a happy look. But Wadi saw his eyes dart around a bit.
"Okay. Buh bye!" he said hanging up, "Zak won't be done in there for a while. He really has to crap. So I'll take you home now and I'll come back later for him."
With that he sped off toward the Saturday house knowing that Zak would not be there when he got back. He didn't know how Doyle would react to that. But in his mind, there were a lot of broken television sets.
Okay so I've had band and school so I'm just glad to now get this posted. I will continue to update, just not as frequently. Please don't kill me! And review.
