Chapter 1: The Mario Brothers

(Recommended soundtrack Mario Underground theme)

Beneath the Mushroom Kingdom, a dozen toat sewer workers fled in panic. More than one of them stumbled over his stubby legs and yelped in terror as the green-shelled monsters popped out of the immense green pipes which sprawled across the dank corridors and walkways like vines in a jungle.

"Koopas! Koopas! Someone sound the alarm!" A blue-spotted toad foreman yelped as one of the turtle-like monsters gave chase. A nearby green-spotted toad sprinted with everything he had, his eyes fixed on a big red button.

"Going somewhere, little guy!" A koopa troopa closed in behind the toad, who screamed and jumped with everything he had left.

"Ahhhh!" With all his might, the toad pressed down. The entire sewer system erupted with a piercing alarm less than a moment later.

"Yes! Now everyone out!" The foreman tried to guide his workers to safety, but a spiked fist struck him from behind, sending the little creature to the ground in sharp pain. "Oof!" He tried to get up when the blue-shelled Koopa captain seized him.

"Release King Bowser!" The Koopa snarled as his beaked face pressed against the Toad foreman's sweat-soaked face.

"Ahhhh! Help!" He closed his eyes when the Koopa captain arched his fist back.

"Let's-a go!" The koopa froze as another stronger voice echoed through a green pipe. He and the foreman turned just in time for a flash of red and blue to fly out.

"Ahhh!" The other Koopa troopas shivered when their blue-shelled captain flew past them and slammed into a wall only to bounce off and knock over two more Koopas. The foreman and other toads cried out in a chorus of exuberant cheers as the short, mustached man in red and blue overalls took a fighting stance.

"It's, it's!" Three koopas stuttered and held each other.

"It's-a me, Mario!"

"Yaaaah!" Another higher-pitched scream echoed from another pipe, and moments later, a flash of green and blue crashed into two more koopas. The blow likewise sent them into a spin and down a waterway.

"Ohhh, and Luigi." The taller and slimmer mustached man got up and rubbed his head with a dazed expression.

"Tha Mario Brothers! We're saved!" The toads sang.

"Are we really gonna do this again, Koopas? It's starting to get old." Mario watched the fear vanish from their eyes, replaced by sheer determination.

"For King Bowser!" The remaining Koopas charged hands out.

"Hmp, mamma mia." Mario shook his head but immediately jumped up and into the first turtle monster. The blow sent the Koopa right out of his shell, revealing his pink-hearted underwear.

"Yaaah!" He tried to cover himself and stumbled into the waterway. Without breaking stride, Mario kicked the empty shell into his hand and then threw it into the ground.

"Look out!" Another two koopas tried and failed to escape and soon found themselves knocked into the river. Luigi took a deep breath and smacked both of his cheeks.

"Ok, you can do this, you can do this. Ahhh!" He closed his eyes and ran to the nearest koopas. Both laughed at the series of drunken punches he threw in the air, at least until the blows hit and sent both spinning on their backs. "Huh, ahh! Ha! Take that you stupid koopaaaaahs!" Luigi screamed when both shells came right for him.

"Luigi, jump!" Mario cried and then exhaled in relief as his younger brother leaped high into the air, his legs sputtering. Luigi came down on an upper platform and saw two more koopas waiting for him. "Yaaah! Get away!" Luigi spun himself around like a propeller, and both monsters screamed just before the blows sent them flying into the sewer water.

"Yaahhh! Mario Brothers! Mario Brothers!" The toads sang. Meanwhile, the Koopa captain's head spun, but he got up and saw Mario hurl the last of his men into the water with two punches and a follow-up-kick.

"No! Send in the spinys!"

"Mamma mia." Luigi panted and grasped his legs. Adrenaline mixed with fatigue as he tried to catch his breath. However, his mustache quivered almost in a premonition. He turned to the nearest green pipe and hyperventilated as three new creatures emerged. The spiky koopas bore their fangs and aimed the spines on their shells toward Luigi.

"Ahhh! Mario!" Luigi backed up toward the ledge, and Mario looked around for a solution. But after a moment, he looked at the walkway again and smiled.

"Hold on, Luigi!" He raced over and jumped up under the nearest spikey. It hurt, but Mario slammed his fist into the walkway. Luigi now watched in awe as the blow sent the spiny onto his back.

"Yaah!" Luigi kicked it at the others and knocked all three into the water.

"There you go, bro!"

"Thanks, I. Ahh, Mario behind you!" Luigi pointed to another pipe, and the Italian plumber gasped when a dozen more spineys came from ground level around the toads.

"Ahhh!" The toads scattered before them, and Mario wished he still had a Koopa shell.

"Hold on, I do." Mario grinned at the Koopa captain, whose smile vanished that instant.

"Hold on! Let's talk about this! I know you're upset, but I'm just a soldier following orders-" Mario kicked the blue-shelled Koopa out of his shell and sent him into the dirty water.

"Hey Luigi, I could use a POW!"

"Right on it!" Luigi spotted a POW block and leaped onto it.

"One!" He shouted.

"Two!" Mario cried back as he aimed his new shell at the spineys.

"Three!" They roared together. Luigi threw the POW block down and felt the sewer shake as all twelve spineys flew onto their backs.

"Here we go!" Mario threw the blue shell and watched it knock the entire troop into the sewer.

"Mario! Mario! Mario!" The Koopas surrounded Mario and lifted him into their arms.

"Woah! Alright, come on, guys!" Mario muttered as they tossed him up and down. Luigi watched from the walkway and smiled but soon sighed.

"That's my big bro." Less than a moment later, he caught a toolbox thrown up by Mario.

"Come on, Luigi. We've got some plumbing to do." Mario gestured to the damaged green pipes, and his brother nodded as he took out a wrench.

"Mario Brothers to the rescue." An hour later, the brothers leaped out of a green pipe into the main street of the Mushroom City, where dozens of toads cried out in joy.

"Mario and Luigi stopped another Koopa raid!" Most stopped whatever they were doing and swarmed the brothers, Mario in particular.

"Aww, ok, you're welcome. Come on, don't y'all have a festival to prepare for?" Mario laughed, and the toads yelped.

"He's right. Back to work!" The toads scattered and went about setting up vibrant decorations from banners, tents, stands, and everything else necessary for a celebration.

"Wow, this is gonna be quite the party, a Mario Party, I guess." Luigi chuckled when he saw one banner which depicted Mario stomping on Bowser.

"Hard to believe it's been a year already, eh, Luigi." Mario nudged his brother, who nodded.

"A year of fighting giant turtle monsters and whatever Goombas are. Huh, are hammer bros Koopas too?"

"Hmm, I guess so. They look just like the troopas. Then again, the beaks are a little different." Mario and Luigi walked down the main street and too in the wonderous Kindom around them. Despite their time there, it still filled both brothers with wonder after growing up in Brooklyn. Every so often, a toad would stop and wave at them or rush up to ask for an autograph. Most came to Mario, but a few stopped for Luigi, who slowed his pace a little with each interaction.

"Mario, Luigi! Mail call, mail call!" A purple-spotted toad rushed toward the brothers with a parcel in hand. "Special delivery from your family!"

"Aww, wonderful, thanks, toad!" Mario took out a gold coin and offered it to him, but the little man shook his head.

"Heros don't pay for the mail! Unless we're having a slow month, capitalism, you know. But we're doing fine this month!" The toad waved them goodbye and ran off to deliver his next letter.

"Aww, let's see what Mom and Dad are up to. Oh no."

"Huh, what is it?" Luigi took the letter from Mario, who facepalmed.

"Aww, cousins Wario and Waluigi got arrested again. Mom's right. Those two are bad seeds." Luigi groaned as Mario took out a newspaper from their father.

"Ohh, Luigi, check this out." Mario pointed to an article on a soccer match in the women's league. Luigi's eyes glistened when he saw her, tall, fit, gleaming blue eyes and shoulder-length brown hair all wrapped up in a yellow soccer jersey plus shorts.

"Princess Daisy." He shook in awe of her as the paper showed highlights of her scoring half the goals for her team.

"Yep, soccer Princess Daisy. They say she's the best player in generations."

"She's amazing." Luigi lost himself until he saw Mario's smirk and staggered backward.

"Aww, my little brother's in love." Mario laughed and patted his shoulder as Luigi's face turned scarlet.

"I'm not in love, besides, as if I'd have a chance with her. She's a world-famous athlete, and I'm a plumber." Luigi almost doubled over until Mario held him upright.

"Luigi, you're more than a plumber. You're a hero!" Despite Mario's encouragement, Luigi remained pale.

"I'm not a hero, Mario. You're the hero. You saved me, remember. You saved Peach, and you defeated Bowser."

"Luigi! We defeated Bowser together, and ever since then, you've been right by my side as we've fought his followers and protected this Kingdom. We're the Mario Brothers! Don't forget that!" Mario put his arm around Luigi's shoulder and earned a slight smile from him.

"Yeah, Mario Brothers."

Inside the castle, Princess Peach sat at her council table with the Toad elders and her personal bodyguard, toad, who stood watch, frying pan in hand.

"Everything should be ready for the festival tonight, your highness. Our celebration of the glorious victory over King Bowser!" The other toads cheered as Peach gave a somber smile and sat back on her throne.

"Good times." She savored the joy and excitement of her subjects but remained somewhat vigilant. As if in anticipation, it came. A toad burst in, terror across his face.

"Princess, a Koopa raiding party in the sewer!" His news sent every other toad into a panicked sprint, and many crashed into each other.

"Stay back, Princess! They won't get you!" Toad held his frying pan up until Peach stood upright with fiery eyes.

"Assemble the Toad Brigade and-" She stopped mid-sentence as another toad raced inside.

"The koopas are defeated! Mario and Luigi sent them packing!" Anguish transformed into jubilation among the other toads, and Peach eased back into her throne with a smile.

"Oh, Mario, you're gonna make me redundant one of these days." She chuckled to herself and listened in on the rest of the meeting. Just as they finished, the doors opened again, and all eyes turned to the Mario Brothers.

"There they are! Our heroes!"

"Oh no, guys, no more swarming. Come on!" Mario found himself forcibly crowd-surfed again while Luigi looked down at a single toad who tried to lift him up.

"It's ok. I'm good little guy."

"Mario, I don't recall calling a plumber." Peach smirked at the short man, who freed himself and approached.

"Well, you got one, two, actually."

"Well done out there again, I guess. I'd hate for our celebration to be ruined by a few koopas."

"Well, they won't be coming out of those pipes again. No charge on account of the festival."

"How kind of you." Peach's expression eased, and Luigi could not help but smile at the two.

"Peaches, peaches, peaches, why do you torment me!" A squeaky voice reached the chamber, and all eyes turned in annoyance to the tiny koopa king who played on a piano in his bird cage.

"Shut up, Bowser. We're about to celebrate our victory over you!" Toad roared.

"Victory! Hmp, you haven't won anything yet! My army will free me, and when they do, you'll be all mine, Peaches! All mine-" Bowser went silent after Toad threw a sheet over his cage.

"You're not a King anymore, Bowser. You're a pet now. Accept it!" Toad almost hit the cage but stopped himself just in time. "Oops, gotta be careful. Sorry Princess."

A few minutes later, Mario and Peach stood together on a balcony overlooking the Mushroom Kingdom. The Princess offered Mario a pair of binoculars which he used to peer into surrounding lands. There Mario saw new toad houses and towns in grassy plains, a desert hill, a seaside, and even in the sky.

"Aww, Princess, look how far the Mushroom Kingdom spreads!"

"Amazing the things you can get done when you're not dealing with koopas. You and Luigi made this all possible."

"You too, Peach. You're the Princess." Mario hesitated but mustered enough courage and inched his hand closer to hers. Peach saw this but kept her hand in place.

"So what are you gonna do next, Mario the hero?"

"Hmm, that's a good question. I'm not so sure myself. But that's what makes it exciting, you know. A world, no a galaxy of possibilities!"

"Galaxy. You don't dream small. I like that." Peach now moved her hand closer to Marios.

"Say, uh, Peach. For the festival tonight. I was just uh wondering if you didn't have any other plans. Maybe you wouldn't mind going with me." Mario's heart raced, and he was not sure if his hand toucher hers first or hers touched his. But in the end, it mattered little. Luigi and Toad gazed in awe as they watched the two stare into each other's eyes.

"I'd love to, Mario."

"Aww yeah!" Toad tried to high-five Luigi, but he gave a more somber smile. He was beyond happy for his brother, but a new sense of loneliness overtook Luigi, who sighed again.

Elsewhere, in Brooklyn, Daisy the Soccer Princess iced her legs and eased back into the seat of her limo. Her entire body ached after a hard-fought win against the second-best soccer team in England, and she longed for a nap. However, thunderous cheers reverberated off the limo windows, and Daisy glanced outside at dozens of fans who cheered as she passed. The athlete gave a sheepish smile and waved back half-heartedly until her phone rang.

"Uhhhhg, evening Stacy." She gave an exhausted sigh at her agent, who typed on a computer even as she spoke.

"Daisy, why haven't you answered your phone!? I've been calling you for at least ten minutes!"

"Stacy, I'm really tired. I'd kind of just like to get back to the hotel and sleep-"

"Sleep!? Daisy, you're an international superstar! Aspiring soccer plays from around the world look up to you!" Despite Stacy's words, Daisy sweatdropped.

"Stacy, I never really did this for all that. I just really love the game-"

"Besides, I set you up on a date tonight." Stacy blinked when she saw Daisy's pale crestfallen expression.

"You what!? Oh, not again, Stacy no more of your matchmaking-"

"Daisy! You're a celebrity. It's my job to match you with someone proper. I already told your driver to take you there. He's a big named actor. Dating him will get you tons of publicity."

Twenty minutes later, Daisy sank into her high-end restaurant seat. Her date sat across the table, his clothes almost as tailored as his hair and face. The athlete could not get a word in, for he droned on and on about his movie career, other celebrities he knew, and all his donations to charitable foundations.

"Excuse me. I need to use the bathroom." Daisy almost sprinted to the bathroom and panted in front of the sink before she whipped out her phone.

"Stacy, I can't do this! He's insufferable!"

"Hmm, no worry, I have another one lined up."

"...What?"

For the next two hours, Daisy went through a foul buffet of five different celebrity men, each worse than the next. By the fifth one, she snuck out of the restaurant and hyperventilated. Her phone rang again, but Daisy threw it away after Stacy's name appeared. The athlete struggled to keep herself awake as she stumbled down the streets of Brooklyn, at least until her feet bumped into something.

"Huh?" Daisy looked down and saw a soccer ball.

"Hey, miss, pass it here!" A soft voice entered Daisy's ear, and she saw a group of children in a soccer game. At that moment, the Soccer Princess saw herself as a little girl playing soccer with her father, and a flood of enthusiasm revitalized her.

"Let's see what you've got!" For the next few minutes, Daisy lost herself to the match and savored every moment of playing with the children just for fun. However, one of the girls tripped and accidentally knocked the ball into a sewer drain.

"Awwww." The kids groaned.

"Don't worry. I'll get it." Daisy opened a sewer grate and climbed down despite the foul smell. Finding the soccer ball and continuing the game meant more to her than her next ten matches. Daisy searched and searched until, at last, the ball came into sight.

"There you are!" Daisy stumbled backward and landed on the ground as a tongue ensnared the soccer ball and ate it in a single gulp.

"Ahhh! Ahhh! Dinosaur!" Daisy yelped as not one but four strange creatures loomed over her.

"Woah! Yoshi!"

Daisy backed up again until she ran into a pipe, a green pile. Before she knew it, the strange tube sucked her and the four dinosaurs inside.

"Wahhh!"

"Yoshi!"

Author's note

Yep I'm back after a while, as you can tell I really liked the Mario movie and already thought of what I think a good sequel would be. Despite being called Mario Bros 3, this will draw more from Mario Bros 3 and if you guys like it, the next will be heavily inspired by my favorite Mario game, Super Mario Galaxy

So until next time,
