Naru had been trying to call Monk, twice an hour for countless hours. His phone was still turned off, sending Naru cursing Monk to the ends of the earth. It was now extremely late at night – practically the next morning- and the streets outside were dark and empty. SPR was probably the only establishment still open on the street.
Naru decided to call Monk one last time before leaving the office and going back to his apartment or collapsing onto his desk, to be honest, either option was incredibly appealing. He had arrived early in the morning after a 12 hour flight (which he couldn't sleep on thanks to the idiot teenager next to him blasting music that was incredibly audible to everyone in their row regardless of their headphones) and then had stayed up almost 12 hours more. He usually only slept a few hours a night, but even Naru couldn't run on no sleep for much more than two days straight.
To Naru's surprise the phone rang for the first time since his half-hourly calls and Monk finally answered, with slurred speech and bleary words.
"'lo?"
"Takigawa?"
"Who's 'his?"
"It's Kazuya Shibuya."
"N-naru?" It sounded like Monk had nearly dropped the phone, "Why're you callin'?"
"I need to speak to you about Mai."
"What about Mai?" Monk's voice sounded frantic, losing some of it's slurriness, the effect was jarring to Naru, "Is she ok?"
"I don't know; I was calling to see if you had her number or maybe her current address. I went to the one she listed in the old employee files, but the landlord said she moved out quite a while ago and her cellphone was disconnected."
"Naru, I don't know what to tell you, but I haven't spoken with Mai in, God, it must be months. Have you tried calling anyone else?"
"Miss Hara is out of the country on business and her agent is apparently not allowed to let calls through unless they're life or death, I don't have anyone else's current number."
Monk sighed and began rattling off the numbers to the rest of SPR's old members. Afterwards there was a long pause.
"Naru, what happened between you and Mai before you left?"
Naru froze, his pen hovering above the notepad before him, his tone turned cold, "That's none of your business Takigawa. Thank-you for the numbers, I'll be sure to get in touch if I need anything else."
"Naru, wai-"
Naru pressed the red end call button, useless Monk. Takigawa was supposed to take care of Mai once Naru left to properly grieve (something he hadn't allowed himself to do until he found the body) and bury his twin. How could Monk have let Mai slip through the cracks and away from people Naru hoped would console her after he left?
Naru thought back to the conversation, Mai must not have told anyone that she'd confessed her love and had Naru tell her that no, he wasn't in fact good enough to be loved by Mai. Mai could only love Gene, the good twin, the sociable and proper twin. That was the way it had been throughout their childhood and, if Gene were still alive, that was likely how it would continue.
