Maya held Nox's hand as they ran down a long corridor. Their heavy footsteps matched the rhythm of their pounding hearts. Something dark and sinister was chasing them. As if fate commanded it, Maya tripped.

"Maya!" Nox exclaimed as she screeched to a halt. "Come on," she panted, bending down to help her friend up. "You've got to get up! We've got to keep running. If you don't—Maya!?"

When Nox's finger tips brushed against Maya's arm, the little girl evaporated into a deep-purple smoke.

Full of desperation and fear, Nox tried to capture the smoke in her bare hands. Her eyes darted around the hallway, hoping to find Maya. But the hallway was empty. She was alone.

Suddenly the dark-purple smoke engulfed Nox. It felt as though a vacuumed had sucked all the air from her lungs. Coughing and panicking, she tried to escape from the smoke. Nothing worked. She opened up her tear-filled eyes to try and find a way out of the smoke. Unfortunately the smoke made vision nearly impossible. It was so thick Nox could barely see her own hand in front of her face.

While she tried to make her escape, the smoke took on a more dense form. It oozed its way up her arms and legs. She struggled to break free from its grasp but her attempts were futile. Instead the semifluid substance simply flooded around her body like a watery grave. It slithered around her neck and tried to force its way into her mouth. She gasped as the cold substance touched her lips. Before it could enter her mouth, Nox clenched her jaw shut. The dark-purple sludge flowed over her mouth and traveled up into her nose. It felt thick and slimy. Nox gasped involuntarily only to have it lodged farther up into her nose. It tricked down her throat. She felt her stomach lurch. Instincts kicked in and the sensation of needing to vomit took over. Nox doubled over and opened her mouth only to being dry heaving. The dark-purple substance took the opportunity to enter her mouth. It tasted revolting. Desperately she tried to spit out the muck only to have it seep down her esophagus and tracheae. Choking and gagging, she fell to her knees. Nox tried to pry the sticky, slimly substance off of her only to have the amorphous substance ensnare her hands. It augmented in size and stretched across her body. Her chest burned with the desire to breathe but she couldn't suck in any air. Rather, she felt the sludge sloshing around in her lungs with every breath she tried to take. Her heart pounded widely in her chest and she felt it resonate through her body…

"N, wake up," Maya shook Nox's arm.

Nox was haphazardly lying on her messy bed. The sheets were thrown around in no particular order and she was cocooned in the middle of a disaster zone created by a hurricane of blankets.

"Come on, N. Get up! It's breakfast time!"

Nox jolted awake. Gasping and sweating, she glanced around the room frantically.

"Guess what? Mookee made-" Maya gaped at Nox. She was completely taken aback by her friend's frightened expression. She had never seen Nox scared before. In Maya's perfect world, Nox was a brave lioness who was never afraid of the monsters hiding under the bed. Seeing Nox so distraught was terrifying for Maya. "N?" Maya asked worriedly. "Are you okay?"

It took Nox a moment and a few deep breaths to realize where she was and that she was safe. Finally she noticed that Maya was with her. It appeared to her that Maya was safe as well. Nox saw no reason to worry any more but the feeling of fretfulness still lingered. She took a second to unwind her face and relax. When she was finally somewhat relaxed, her eyes softened. "Yeah," Nox said with a weak smile, "I just had a bad dream." A flash light-brown and light-blue trust Nox backwards. "Whoa!" she gasped as she fell back onto her bed.

Maya lay on top of Nox as she wrapped her short, skinny arms around Nox's neck. "No more bad dreams," Maya murmured, "Only good ones, okay?"

Fear pulsed through Nox's body as she hugged back. She was terrified that Maya would disappear just like in her dreams. However, the little girl didn't evaporate in her arms like in her nightmare. Feeling the solidness of Maya's tangible body, Nox felt relieved. "Okay," she nodded, "no more bad dreams." After a moment of peaceful hugging, she slipped out of Maya's arms and rolled off the bed.

Sitting up, Maya watched Nox walk over to her closet.

"What exotic meal has Mookee prepared for us on this fine summer day?" Nox asked in a preoccupied manner while she rummaged through the clothing that littered her closet.

Training robes and other clothes were hung precariously on hangers and some scattered the ground nearby. They had been in the same spot for a week or two by now. She always meant to pick them up but never got around to it. Nox had a bad habit of putting things off. Something Boaddai often chastised her about.

Finally Nox picked out a fresh pair of training robes.

"Pancakes," Maya answered. She turned away to give Nox some privacy as she changed.

"We still have that good maple syrup from Canada, right?" Nox asked casually as she began to remove her pale-orange overtunic and replace it with a fresh red one. She took off the matching pale-orange loose-fitting trousers and pulled on a pair of clean red ones. After she put on one of her training boots, she turned to Maya as she tied the black obi around her waist. On the sash was the very same emblem of the Redakai Boaddai wore. The only difference was that hers, as well as all Kairu Warriors in training, was silver and not gold.

"Of course we do!" Maya laughed. She turned to face Nox once more. "After your hour debate with Master Boaddai and Mookee last time, I don't think they'd want to mess with your maple syrup supplies ever again."

"What can I say? If you're going to use maple syrup is has to be the right kind. Otherwise there's no point in using it!" she said passionately.

"You and your maple syrup," Maya sighed. "You might as well bathe in it!"

"Maybe I do," she replied slyly. "It seems I've misplaced my other boot," she frowned, glaring down at her barefoot.

"Do you need some help looking for it?" She stood up and began to glance around the room for the missing boot.

"Nah, I've got this. I'll meet you in the kitchen when I find it," she decided.

Maya walked over to the door with a mischievous bounce in her step. "You better hurry up and find your other boot before I eat all the pancakes!"

"You wouldn't dare!" Nox snapped her head so quickly in Maya's direction that she almost got whiplash.

"I would! Now hurry up!" Maya happily bounced out of the room.

Nox could hear the happy pattering of Maya's feet as the little girl ran off towards the kitchen. This filled her with an emotion she deeply enjoyed and pleasantly searched for her missing boot.

After a few minutes, Nox emerged from her room wearing her other boot. When she entered the kitchen she noticed Maya was sitting at the wooden table and Mookee was at the sink cleaning pans. Both of their backs were facing her. She silently stalked up behind Maya. The little girl was eating her food unaware that Nox was behind her.

"I hope you saved me some," she said in a fake growl.

With a jerk of surprise, Maya shrieked, "N! I told you to never do that!"

"Maya, what's wrong?" Mookee asked worriedly. He turned to see Maya breathing rapidly while Nox was grinning like a Cheshire Cat as she stood behind the little girl.

"N was being mean and scared me!" she told Mookee.

"Nox, why would you do that?" he questioned. He tilted his head and tried to figure out what was going on. After a year living here, he didn't quite understand Earth customs. He then returned to scraping the left over pancake batter off of the pans before they got crusty.

"What?" Nox pouted with a bemused expression. "I'm not allowed to have a little fun?" she snickered.

"No," Maya pursed her lips disapprovingly, "you're not allowed to have any fun. And here," she handed Nox a plate with a small smile, "before I change my mind and eat them all."

Graciously Nox smiled and took the plate, "Thanks, Little Blue!" She then sat down next to Maya. As soon as she sat down, she drowned her pancakes with maple syrup and immediately began to eat them.

"I asked you not to call me that," Maya mumbled as she poked the single pancake on her plate with a fork.

"And I asked Santa for a red bicycle. Did I get one? No!" Nox jokingly ruffled Maya's hair. "Plus," she added, "your hair is blue and your wearing blue. What else am I supposed to call you for a nickname?"

Maya swatted Nox's pesky hand. "Stop it!" she frowned. "I don't want a nickname. I like to be called my real name."

"Oh, all right," Nox laughed. After she had finished the pancakes on her plate, she placed several more on her plate.

"Erian's Beard!" Maya laughed. "N, you're like a human vacuum! You suck up any type of food!"

"That's strange," Mookee called from the sink. "You never seem to eat meat like that. In fact, I've never seen you eat meat before."

"That's because I'm a vegetarian, Mookee," Nox replied.

"Since when?!" he squeaked.

"Since as long as I can remember," she answered.

"Oh, I didn't know!" he frowned sheepishly.

"It's all right, Mookee," Nox said soothingly as she consumed another pancake.

"I see my two aspiring students are enjoying this fine day," a familiar voice called behind them.

"Hello, Master Boaddai," Maya said gleefully.

"Hey, Master B.," Nox smiled.

"I came to tell the both of you that the tournament will begin in three hours," he smiled.

"I almost forgot about that," Nox said indifferently as she took a bite of her pancakes.

"How could you almost forget something this exciting?" Maya gasped.

"Well, I'm getting old, Maya Dearest," she said softly. "Sometimes things slip my mind. I can't help it."

Boaddai held back a small chuckle and cleared his throat to get Nox's attention. "Nox," he said firmly when he had her attention, "I advise you to be on your best behavior at the tournament. I do not believe others will find your jokes as humorous as we do."

"I understand," she nodded. "Turn down the sass. I can do that."

After a nice morning conversation at breakfast, Boaddai gave the girl's the rest of the morning to themselves before they had to leave for tournament.

"Come on, N!" Maya was prancing excitedly to the main training area. "We don't want to be late!"

Nox was walking at a leisurely pace. She saw no need to rush. It was nothing more than a silly little tournament to her. Plus, she thought it would be better if they all stayed here. She still had a bed feeling about the tournament, especially because that nightmare left a horrible aftertaste in her mouth. The dream was something she thought she ought to tell Boaddai but she never did. It would ruin Maya's excitement. She liked seeing Maya happy and that was something she didn't want to ruin.

"Okay," Nox smiled warmly, "okay, just calm down!

Maya simply skipped happily across the wooden bridge as an answer.

Nox's smile widened as she watched the girl bounce about in her enthusiasm. And for a while, Nox had forgotten about her tense feeling about the whole ordeal.

By the time the two girls made it to the training area, Boaddai was already there waiting for them.

"You two are right on time," he remarked.

"Whoa, Master B.," Nox said slightly surprised. "You look rather spiffy."

Instead of wearing his usual robes, he wore more formal apparel. While he still donned the dark-brown undertunic, he switched out his short-sleeved overtunic with a long-sleeved one. The grey tabard was replaced with a similar one, except it was much longer. On top of his tabard and overtunic was a long, brown, sleeveless cloak.

"Why thank you, Nox," he smiled. "It is custom for Redakai to wear semi-formal attire while attending tournaments and other important events."

"We didn't have to dress formal, right?" Maya asked nervously. She hated standing out.

"Not at all," he answered. "Now, are you two ready?" he asked.

"Yes!" Maya nearly shouted with her overwhelming excitement.

"Sure thing," Nox mumbled.

"Is everything okay, N?" Maya asked. "You don't seem too excited." Remembering the look of fear Nox had expressed earlier, Maya eyed Nox carefully.

"I'm fine," Nox assured Maya. "I'm just a little distracted, that's all." She felt a stab of guilt pierce her gut. As much as she hated to lie to her best friend, she still felt some relief in the fact that she kind of told the truth. After all, she was distracted by the many things on her mind.

Boaddai took a small mental note Nox's lack of enthusiasm. He eyed her carefully for a moment then said, "Since you too are ready, off we go."

In a sudden flash of bright-blue light, Nox felt the ground beneath her feet shift violently from the ground of the training arena into the harder and sturdier floor of a spaceship.

Disoriented from the suddenness of their travels, Maya was set off balance and started to fall face first onto the floor. "Whoa!" Maya gasped.

Acting purely on instinct, Nox wrapped an arm around Maya's waist to prevent her from falling. "It's okay," Nox murmured softly to the confused girl, "I've got you."

Realizing what happened, Maya regained her balance. "Thanks, N! I'm glad to know you've always got my back," she hugged Nox.

Nox blushed slightly as she hugged back, "Always." Remembering where they were and that other people were around, Nox stepped backwards. "Uh, Maya," she whispered, "not here. Okay?"

"Okay…" Maya replied. She wasn't sure why Nox would be so self-conscious about a simple hug but decided to go along with it.

"Master Boaddai," an unfamiliar voice called. A tall man with a dark skin tone and freckles below his eyes stood in front of them. He stretched out his hand towards Boaddai, "I see you've made it, and so have your students." He wore the same attire as Boaddai did. He had brown eyes, black hair, and a neatly trimmed beard and mustache.

Boaddai smiled and grasped the man's hand, "Master Atoch, so nice to see you. Have the rest of the Redakai arrived?"

Atoch smiled, "Yes, you were the last to arrive." He turned to get a better look at Boaddai's students. The warm expression he had on vanished slightly when he noticed Maya than Nox. He narrowed his eyes as he observed Nox closer.

This made Nox shift uncomfortably. She didn't like the way Atoch was looking at her. It suddenly occurred to her that her eyes were probably switching from blue to violet in this lighting. Insecurity and awkwardness flooded through her body. Nox hated feeling like some specimen in a museum for people to gawk and stare at. Something about this man made her feel uneasy but she buried her worries. If Master Boaddai trusts him, he must be good, Nox hoped.

"Ah, these must be your students," Atoch smiled.

"Yes they are," Boaddai nodded. "I believe introductions are in order. This is Maya," he gestured to Maya.

Maya smiled and respectfully bowed to Atoch.

Atoch returned the bow and smiled down at the blue haired girl.

"And this is Nox Kenway," Boaddai gestured to Nox. He hoped that Nox would heed his warning about being on her best behavior.

Nox, who was being unusually polite, bowed and said, "It is very nice to meet you, Master Atoch."

Once more, Atoch returned the bow. "Likewise, Miss Kenway."

Boaddai sighed softly to himself. Sometimes it amazed him how quickly Nox could change from being an impertinent child to a respectful Kairu Warrior.

"The tournament will begin shortly," Atoch stated. "You two should sit with my student, Toby. Here he comes now."

A tall teenager, the age of sixteen, with deep-brown eyes and short black hair strode over to them. He flashed a polite smile at the two girls. "Hello," he said with a melodic tone. He made eye contact with Nox and raised his eyebrows slightly.

Something stuck Nox as odd. There was something about Toby that seemed off and made her more attentive than usual. It was difficult to detect what the exact feeling was but Nox was certain this was the same why she felt about Atoch. That bothered Nox.

"Master Boaddai, this is my student, Toby," Atoch said proudly.

"Greetings, Master Boaddai," Toby bowed.

"Likewise," Boaddai nodded and returned the bow.

"Toby, these are Master Boaddai's students, Nox Kenway and Maya," he motioned to each girl as he said their names. "Would you be so kind as to accompany Master Boaddai's students to the stadium?"

"Of course!" he nodded. "Farewell, Master Atoch. It was nice meeting you, Master Boaddai," he said. He turned and gestured for Nox and Maya to follow him.

As Toby led the two girls to the stadium, Boaddai turned to Atoch. "It's a shame our students are not participating," he stated. "It would be rather interesting to see how our students would interact upon meeting each other as opponents."

"Indeed," Atoch agreed. "Such students, both graced with amazing Kairu abilities, would be quite a sight to see."

The two Kairu Masters took off towards the stadium as well. Their destination was the main box where the other Redakai would be sitting.

"Though, I'm almost certain that my student, after a long and strenuous battle, would emerge victorious," Atoch said musingly.

Boaddai raised an eyebrow at Atoch. "I'm not so sure that would be the outcome. You should not underestimate Nox's skills."

"With all due respect, Master Boaddai," he replied confidently, "Toby is much more experienced with competitive Kairu Battles than Nox is. After all, she hasn't been in a tournament before. Speaking of her lack of participation, why has she decided not to partake in this tournament? Most of the Redakai's students who were eligible jumped at the opportunity to participate."

"Nox is rather difficult when it comes to separating her from Maya," Boaddai replied.

"Interesting," Atoch nodded.

"Don't worry girls. I know the perfect place to sit," Toby declared as he led the girls down some corridors packed with Kairu Warriors and other spectators.

Not wanting to lose Nox in the crowd, Maya held Nox's hand as they walked. She was much smaller than the other people and was terrified of getting separated from the group. Of course, Nox did not mind this. Ever since her nightmare, she had been keeping a watchful eye on Maya. They followed Toby through a gate way that led to a section of the stands. "Here we are," he stated, "the best seats anyone can get!"

"Whoa!" Maya gasped excitedly as she sat down. Her eyes were wide with anticipation and impatience.

After Maya had sat down, Nox sat down next to her. She looked around at all of the people, found Boaddai sitting with the rest of the Redakai, and then looked down at the arena. To her, it seemed like a modern version of the Roman Coliseum.

"Pretty amazing, isn't it?" Toby said in a harmonious tone. His body was turned in Nox's direction.

"Huh?" Nox murmured. She hadn't noticed Toby sat down next to her.

"The arena," he nodded his head towards the arena. "You're taking in the glow of the arena. But it's much more impressive when you're down there, battling, especially when you come out victorious." He flashed Nox another smile.

Out of the corner of her eye, Nox watched Maya gazing around the arena excitedly. "So you've been in tournaments before?" she asked uninterestedly.

"Yes," he replied. "I've won every single tournament I've entered, too."

"You're certainly the modest type," Nox scoffed.

"There's nothing wrong with being a little proud about your victories in battle, Hon," he smirked. "Though, I'm beginning to wonder," he tilted his head with a raised eyebrow, "why you aren't participating in today's tournament. You are of age, correct?"

"I didn't want to," she said curtly.

Toby wanted to continue their conversation but decided against it. An awkward silence rose between the two Kairu Warriors.

An odd sensation came over Nox. Something felt wrong. Desperate to find the source of her unease, she glanced around. It occurred to her how many people were attending the tournament. If there was one thing she hated more than soggy cornflakes it would be large crowds of people. Her gaze finally landed on the Redakai. The seven men sat together in their own section, silently conversing with each other. She wanted this tournament to be over already. All she wanted to do was get out of here and get back to the monastery.

He gazed over Nox to discreetly observe her posture and features. Noticing and sensing her antsy behavior, he tried to break the ice. "Relax, Nox," he hummed, "The tournament is about to start. No need to be impatient." He grinned at her as he brushed his hand against hers with intentional clumsiness.

She glanced sideways at him, shifted away from him slightly, and then focused her eyes on the arena. "Right," she mumbled.

Just a few seconds after Nox fixed her eyes on the arena, the tournament begun. Two Kairu Warriors stepped out of the gateways that led into the arena. One of the contestants was a boy with short red hair and the other was female with long purple hair. They both wore green training robes.

A Redakai with sleeked back white hair stood up. He waved his hands and silence fell upon the stadium. When the man announced his name and the two contestants' names Nox wasn't paying attention. She was far too busy suppressing her worries.

Both Kairu Warriors pounded their fists together and bowed to indicate they were ready to battle. The stadium burst into cheers and noises of excitement as the Kairu Battle began. The girl attacked first and had her opponent pinned down.

Excitement fluttered through Maya. She eagerly watched, sitting on the edge of her seat. It took her a few tries but she eventually glanced over at Nox. Just as her usual posture when bored, Nox was slightly slouched. Confused as to how someone could be so bored in a place like this, Maya opened her mouth to ask Nox if she was all right. Before she could say something, her attention was drawn back to the ongoing Kairu Battle. If she got a better look, Maya would've noticed Nox's left hand was tightly clenched.

Toby leaned close to Nox and whispered, "So, Nox, what's it like as a student of Boaddai?" He was rather uninterested with what was going on in the arena as well. Something about Nox had captured his interest since the moment he laid his eyes on her.

"Huh?" Nox frowned. It seemed like weird question to ask. "It's okay," she decided, "He's a great Kairu Master." Both were speaking just quiet enough so Maya and the others around them could not hear. Not that it would have mattered. Everyone else seemed more wrapped up in the tournament than what was going on around them.

"You know," Toby began in an odd tone of voice, "I can sense those who are gifted with astonishing Kairu abilities. I can't help but get the feeling you are one of those special people."

Insecurity flooded through Nox. It was her pet peeve when people called her unique. Often at times when she stood out from other people it ended badly for her. She tried to focus on the battle that was taking place. Even though the arena was filled with powerful Kairu attacks as one Kairu Warrior tried to gain the upper hand over the other, it was Toby who held most of Nox's attention. She was slightly curious as to what he was talking about.

"I can also tell when a Master of Kairu is unfit for one of their students," he said haughtily. "What if I told you I know a better Kairu Master, one worthy of your skills?"

"I don't suppose you're talking about Atoch, are you?" she narrowed her eyes and glanced at him.

A malevolent smile slid across his lips. "No, I'm not. He isn't even capable of teaching your pathetic friend Maya."

Her eyes hardened into a stone, cold blue as she glared at him. "Don't insult my friend in front of me or ever, got it?" Nox hissed harshly.

"You're protectiveness of your friend is sweet and admirable," he chuckled condescendingly, "however, you are capable of much greater things."

Anger pulsed through Nox. She scowled at him but didn't say anything.

"You shouldn't frown so much, Nox. It makes you less attractive," he commented.

"Toby, be careful when poking something with a stick. It might turn around and bite you," Nox warned.

"Come on, you should take that as a compliment," he sighed. "I think you look attractive. Well, not when you're frowning. But other than that," he looked Nox over, "you're rather good looking."

"I think you're rather twofaced."

If they both had been paying attention to the Kairu Battle, they would have noticed that the girl had won the match.

"I'm going to chose to ignore that," he laughed. "Come with me, Nox. I'll show you a real Kairu Master. One that is worthy of training someone as gifted in Kairu as you are. It will just be you and me. We can be under the tutelage of my real Master. Not those oafs Atoch and Boaddai."

"Toby, I don't like what you're implying," Nox frowned. The same skin crawling sensation of dread came over Nox. She had a really bad feeling now.

Suddenly there was a loud bang and stadium shook with the force of a powerful shockwave. There was a flash of purple light. Once the light had faded along with the smoke, there was a tall man standing in the middle of the arena. The man wore a large, deep red cloak with a hood over his head. Though his hood was up, his face was still very visible. He had dark blue-gray skin, high cheek bones, and a strip of grey-lavender skin running down the middle of his face. His eyes were light-orange and his pupils were yellow.

Immediately the Kairu Warriors who had been battling turned and stared awestruck at the man. Everyone in the stadium fixed their eyes on the menacing man as well. The Redakai recoiled in shock with the rest of the spectators.

After a moment, the same man sleeked back hair spoke, "Lokar! What is the Meaning of this?"

Nox felt her hand being squeezed. She knew it was Maya grabbing her hand. It was not a surprise to Nox that Maya was afraid. They both knew things about Lokar.

Lokar flashed a wide, evil smile. He looked around at the scared bystanders with a sense of self-pride in the fear he invoked. It seemed almost as if he was looking for someone. Finally his gaze landed near Nox, Maya, and Toby.

Shivers ran up Nox's spine as she and Lokar locked eyes. It was only for a brief moment when her pale-blue eyes waged ware with his light-orange ones. This was a very bad man. Something about the way he smiled and his composer made Nox wonder if he was here just for sake revenge or a deeper personal matter.

Breaking eye contact with Nox, he gazed around once more. He menacingly ordered, "Attack."

Suddenly several spectators in the crowd began to terrorize innocent people. Panic engulfed the crowd and a stamped of people desperately tried to escape. Security attempted to stop the conspirators and calm the crowd but the chaos was already set in motion. Several of the Kairu Warriors who were present attempted to help security control the crowd but were thwarted by their traitorous peers.

As the chaos unfolded, Lokar calmly walked over to the Redakai. He was going to get the revenge he so deeply craved.

Maya was paralyzed in fear. She looked over at Nox in hopes that she would know what to do. To her dismay, Nox seemed confused.

Toby smirked at Nox. He watched her watching the panic unfold. It seemed as though she was deciding what to do. He was interested to see how she was going to react to the situation. Of course he figured there were only three things she could do: try to help protect the spectators, try to calm the mob, or flee. He watched her eyes light up with determination. He knew she had come to a decision.

Before any danger could befall on Maya, Nox grabbed the young girl's hand and yanked her out of the seat.

"Leaving so soon?" Toby mocked as he stood up and blocked their path. "The show's about to begin!"

"Get out of the way, Toby," Nox hissed.

"I'm sorry, babe, but I've got my orders," he reached out and grabbed Nox's arm.

"Let go of my arm," she demanded. His touch sent her on edge.

"You two are coming with me," he tightened his grip. Suddenly he felt a blunt object collide with his left side. He gave a yelp of pain as he was forced sideways and nearly toppled over a chair. Gasping furiously, he gripped the side that was hurting. He looked around to see that Nox and Maya had disappeared into the swarming crowd. When he realized Nox had preformed a half-shin, half-knee kick on him, he was seething with anger. He let out a howl of anger and pain as he Kairu blasted a fleeing spectator.

Nox and Maya were jostled by the fleeing spectators as they tried to escape the stadium. But Nox plowed through the crowd and kept Maya close beside her. She had to find a safe way to Boaddai.
