Chapter 20

Last Chance

I try to hold back all the emotions as I stare at Sam's still and unconscious body just lying there. "What's wrong John?" he begins to ask. "Can't handle the truth?" Caleb pauses not expecting me to reply. "I'll kill you." I say point blank. "You know I've heard those words before… But look at me! I'm still here aren't!" I start to struggle with the silks again. "Every word that comes out of your mouth is just a bunch of empty threats." My eyes shoot back at Caleb. "How about you release me and we'll see just how empty they are!"

Caleb laughs cruelly and begins walking over to me. "That's one way to go….. But then again, I could just get it over with and kill you now." I stare Caleb dead in the eyes, as hard as a rock. "Go ahead" I say firmly. Caleb and I stare at each other for a few moments before he cracks another smile. "I said I could…. I never said I would." He walks back towards Sam. I choose to not speak once again.

"I really thought you would have caught on by now, being the great detective you are." I keep watching him as he looks back down at Sam. "What are you talking about?" I ask. In one quick motion Caleb turns back around to face me. "Don't you get it!?... Everything is a game!... Killing you now would just be a waste." I'm trying to figure out his twisted riddle as he continues to speak.

"No. I always like to give my opponent a fighting chance before I kill them." His words puzzle me. "What are you saying?" Caleb walks over to me once more. "I'm saying this is the finale! The final chapter!... I'm saying take your best shot and we'll see what happens."

I think for a minute then realize what he's saying. "You want a battle to the death" I answer. "That's one way to put it. But… it's your choice." Caleb walks over and lays down next to Sam again, and begins fingering her shoulder.

I stop to think about my options. I either reject his offer and he kills me leaving Sam to be lost forever… Or I accept and have a slightly better chance of coming out of this alive and saving Sam before it's too late.

"Common John! I'll tell ya what. I'll even give you a 30 minute head start." I really don't have a choice. "I accept." Caleb jumps up off the pillows and throws his arms up in the air.

"Then Let The Games Begin!"
