Chapter 21
Let The Games Begin
*John*
I feel the restraints release my body letting me drop to the ground. I quickly look up to see Caleb and the silk maze gone. The whole room is empty except….. My heart skips a beat as I lay my eyes on Sam still in the same place Caleb left her. I run over to her. As I reach out to touch her I feel what seems like an invisible barrier keeping her just out of reach.
"Ha ha ha ha!" I hear Caleb laugh. I stare at her fragile body laying motionless with Caleb's bite marks on her neck. "Don't worry Sam… I'll get you out of this nightmare." "You have 30 minutes" echoes through my head. I have to find something I can use to defend myself. And I know I won't find it here. I take one last look at Sam before I take off running towards the stairs.
I quickly speed down the stone steps, back into the dungeon where Caleb was holding me prisoner. I run down the long narrow hallways looking for anything that looks like a weapon. With every minute that passes by I know it's a minute closer to Caleb hunting me down. But I refuse to give up. Not when I have so much at stake.
My eyes scan my surroundings looking for anything out of place. I see nothing but creepy stone pillars and an empty hallway. I have less than 5 minutes left. I feel my heart racing as I see one of the pillars with a loose stone in it. I just need to pull the rock out and hope it will do me some good. I grip the stone and slowly pull it out of the pillar. I think about it for a moment and realize a rock won't defend me against a vampire. My hopes are dwindling as my time nears two minutes.
I cut my attention as something suddenly catches my eye. There's something hidden in the back of the hole where the stone was. I set the stone down and reach in and grab an old cloth wrapped around a silver object.
I unwrap the cloth to find a dusty silver dagger with some writing engraved on the blade. I blow the dust off so I can read what it says.
"Doi Devin Unul." Before I can even think, I hear footsteps and I know it's begun. I quickly and quietly slide the stone back in place and hide behind the pillar, clutching the dagger in my hand. The foot steps creep closer and closer until I here them stop. "I know your here McBain" Caleb's voice echoes through the halls. "So are you going to come out?... Or am I going to have to come find you?" I hold my breath as I stand frozen with only one thought in my mind. Sam.
I hear Caleb's footsteps again, approaching closer and closer until I hear him stop right at the pillar I'm hiding behind. I close my eyes and think about Sam's long dark hair and perfectly toned skin. I stay relaxed and wait. I hear his footsteps once more, this time sounding farther and farther away. I quietly release my breath in relief and peek around the corner of the pillar to see Caleb's back turned. This may be my only chance.
I look down at the dagger and rearrange it in my hand to a throwing position. The memory of Caleb sinking his fangs into Sam's neck brings me to slowly pull my arm back. Before I even realize it, my arm whips forward and my hand releases the dagger sending it flying in the air straight towards its intended target.
