Next chapter is here!
My mouth drops. I killed her sister?
Was this another sick joke of the Capitals? Make one person think that another tribute killed their sibling and watch chaos ensure?
I studied Clove's face. Well, she was certainly pissed. There was something though, that caught me. Her face seemed slightly familiar. Her dark hair, daring eyes. She upheld a stance that showed she was confident in what she was doing, and was prepared to kill. She seemed...
...Similar to that Peacekeeper I killed a few years ago.
So I really did have a hand in her sister's death. I had never felt guilt at killing her sister, after what she did to Toby. However, there were times were I had laid awake, with the scene replaying in my head countless times.
She was, after all, dead because of me. Who knows? Maybe she was to return home and into the arms of a boyfriend. Maybe she would have been a prodigy. Or maybe she would have died because of someone else and I wouldn't have to deal with the hate of her younger sister.
Fate was an interesting thing.
"Ivy." Katniss whispered. I blinked to clear away the thoughts and looked at her. She gave me a questioning look. I shook my head and nodded it toward the Careers.
Catni turned around and we started to watch the Careers.
After awhile, all of them left. I frowned, then sneaked a glance at Katniss. As I thought, she also saw something wrong with the set up.
We stepped out from our hiding spots, and went forward. Scanning the ground, I realized that some sort of trap must have been laid. The ground was uneven, with bumps all over. Watching the animals, they all seemed to get close to the area, then suddenly veer away.
Reaching a hand out, I met no resistance. There wasn't any force field. Then, I turned around and looked for an animal. I found a bird, and then threw a knife at it. It dropped to the ground, dead.
Walking over to it, I pulled of a feather, then returned. I dropped the feather over the ground. Nothing.
Then, I grabbed the bird and then was about to drop it, when I encountered resistance.
Some sort of force field that repelled animals, but not humans.
There was no way that the Careers could do that. It must have been the capital. That would probably mean that there was a dangerous trap that was set for people, but could be activated by animals. Panem must have set up a barrier so that the trap wouldn't go off, and then could see the arena be killed.
There wasn't anything we could do. However, if we waiting, the Careers would have to take supplies from the pile some time. When that happened, we would be able to see how to avoid the trap.
I conveyed my plan to Katniss, and she agreed. We retreated, and hid close by, but out of sight in a tree full of leaves.
Tomorrow, we watched the Careers carefully. Everything was going fine besides two things.
First, they hadn't gone to the pile yet. Second, I was starting to accept Cato and Clove. They chatted together like friends, and also teased each other. Sometimes, I was tempted to speak to them as well. Their topics included hobbies, gossiping, and other subjects. The one topic that was avoided was home.
I took the first watch at night. As I sat in the tree observing them, I realized something.
When Cato went to switch with Clove who had watch next, they talked for a bit, with their hands intertwined.
Cato whispered something to Clove, and she smiled. Then, they walked off, Cato to sleep, Clove to patrol.
Huh. It seems like there might have been something more than just District buddies between the two.
Nothing particularly exciting happened. Later on, I switched with Katniss.
In the morning, we both were awake earlier than the Careers, though not by much. After awhile, they got up as well.
The boy from three caught my interest. He stood away from the two, seeming out of place. That wasn't the big thing. He was walking toward the pile.
We watched him, observing every motion. At the ground surrounding the pile, he started hopping. He went from one place, to another. Rested a bit, then continued.
Suddenly, he slipped, and his hand hit the ground in attempt to save himself. With a loud sigh of relief, he straightened up, and continued.
From the group of supplies, he grabbed some food, water, and weaponry. Then, he headed back in the same bizarre dance-like motion.
District three was famous for electronics and such. Therefore, the trap had something to do with that, as that would be the only reason why he was with them. As for his reaction and the weird jumping...
There were definatly safe spots on the ground, the areas he landed on. What was something that would be a danger if hit? The reaction that he had showed that it was powerful. It couldn't be a spare, or net.
"Bombs." Katniss said, with excitement, then worry. "From the Cornucopia."
Of course! That would explain everything.
The Careers left the area, most likely to go kill someone. We were about to make our move, when a flash of red caught my attention.
I motioned to Katniss to wait, and then pointed.
Slowly, a girl came up. The one from five.
She made her way to the pile, and then started to hop around as well. So she had also figured it out.
Ember snatched a few things, and then was about to run away, when I threw I knife down at the ground, and then approached her.
"Yo." I said. "Tell me how you avoided the bombs, and I will let you go free." She frowned, and darted to the right, but then switched to the left immediately. I frowned, and caught her by tripping her.
I grabbed a knife, and placed it on her throat.
"Tell. Me. Or die right now." I hissed into her ear, applying a bit of pressure to the knife. A drop of red fell onto the ground.
"Stop! I'll tell you!" She almost shouted. I grinned at her.
"Good girl. Now spill. Actually, you go ahead of me, and I'll follow you. Just in case." I saw her eyebrows come together a bit. So I was righ when I thought that she would run. Or lead me incorrectly.
I led her forward, and she stepped onto the ground, then hopped onto another. I followed, making sure to touch only the places she did. When we were halfway in, she turned around.
"What's wrong?"
"I want you to promise that you will set me free, unharmed afterwards." She said. I tilted my head.
"And what if I said no?" It wasn't that I was going to refuse. It had been my intention from the start to let her go. I was just curious about what she thought she could threaten me with, without getting herself killed in the process.
"I...Just promise me!" She didn't know. A little part of me wanted to tease her even more.
"How about my question?" Might as well have fun when I could. Even if it was rather cruel...
"I'll scream as loud as I can. The Careers will come...and they would like to kill you more than me." She said. I snorted. So she did have a plan, though rather risky.
Oh well, play time should be done.
"I promise." I said, holding my hand to my heart. She nodded, then continued.
We reached the area, and then I grabbed a few thing. Another set of knives, first aid kit, a bunch of food, water. Then, I found the best part, a set of clothes.
Grabbing everything and stuffing it into my backpack, I let her lead me back. She ran off, and I shrugged. The girl wasn't a risk.
Wrong!
A piercing scream sounded, and then ended. Crap. That stupid girl decided to alert the Careers.
"Katniss, lets move."
We were about to go when a cannon went off.
It wasn't her being an idiot. The Careers were really here.
One word came to mind.
Shit.
Cliffhanger!
Review...and I will update. No reviews..no update.
