Summary: Holmes hates seeing Watson like this.
Sherlock Holmes did not particularly care for Mary Morstan. He had learned to respect her, grudgingly; he had even found himself commiserating with her after Watson had been harmed in pig processing explosion. But she was still the woman who had stolen his friend from him.
And now she was the woman whose death had broken his friend's heart.
True, other people had lost loved ones in the diphtheria outbreak. But other people allowed themselves time to grieve. They did not throw themselves into fighting back the tide of disease, opening themselves up to further pain each time another patient died.
Watson did not weep. At least, Holmes had never caught him at it. So when he saw Watson sitting on the staircase, alone in the dark, with his head in his hands, he came to a decision. He was going to put an end to this emotionally-exacerbated exhaustion, even if it was just a temporary respite.
Watson may not have liked it, but Holmes had tested sedatives on Gladstone for just such an occasion.
