Chapter Two- Goddess of the Rainbow

The door slammed loudly against its frame as Ana and Lucy chased each other into the kitchen of Ana's house.
Pushing past Lucy, Ana ran into the fridge, throwing the door open and smiling at the chilled air flowing slowly out, "I wonder what's for dinner.. What do you want, Lucy?" She grabbed a chocolate Calci-yum and dropped into a dining room chair, leaving the fridge open.
The blond took out a strawberry yogurt and, closing the fridge, sat next to Ana, "I don't mind.."
"I want fry bread and pippies. Do you think we'll have time to pick pippies before dinner though?" Aroha joined them, sitting on the edge of the table.
"Sure.. We've still got a few hours 'till when Mum said she would do dinner... But why aren't you on the x-box?" Ana blinked quizzically at her sister.
"Hungry." She shrugged, appearing from behind the fridge door with some cheese, "How was the mermaid hunt?"
Ana frowned at Aroha, "We don't know that it's a mermaid! It could be a merman, or Siren!"
"So you didn't find it?"
"... No..."
"Pity."
Lucy leant back in her chair, looking amused as she watched the two girls she considered her sisters, talk.

"What mermaid?! Where? Can I see?" A little girl with mid-length red hair ran excitedly into the room, skidding around the corner.
"Iris!" Lucy picked up the child, spinning her around, "Hello my little rainbow goddess! How's the sea coming?"
Lucy had assigned Iris the job of "looking after the sea" for her.
"Oh, great! But.." Iris pouted, "/ haven't seen any mermaids in it!"
Aroha rolled her eyes at her little sister, "No shiz." She deadpanned, "There aren't any!"
Looking rather hurt, her little sister jumped clumsily out of Lucy's arms, "But Lucy saw one!" Said teen blinked, raising her eyebrows, "That means she'll show me! ... Right, Lucy?" Iris gazed trustingly up at her with big brown eyes, holding her teddy bear (which had a sparkly green fish tail) close to her chest.
"Um," Lucy hesitated as the twins stared her down, and Iris peered up at her, her pretty young face glowing, "O-of course."
"Yay, yay, YAAAAY!" Iris jumped up and down, dancing with her mer-bear, "I knew you would say yes!"
Grinning from ear to ear, the young girl hugged Lucy.
Aroha and Ana were not so happy.
"What the hell?" Aroha stared coolly at Lucy, "Why the hell did you say that?!"
Iris stared back at Aroha, her chocolate eyes saucers.
"You never saw a mermaid! It was most likely your imagination!"
"We can still hope, have fun-"
"Whatever." Aroha cut in, scowling and moodily floating out.
"Wow... For such an Angus Burger, she moves pretty darn gracefully." Ana laughed, encasing Lucy in a one-armed hug.
"She needs a happy meal!"
Lucy allowed a smile to grace her lips at Iris' comment.
"Speaking of which..." Ana grinned, squeezing Lucy's shoulder, "Come!"

Iris half slid, half stomped down the grimy green tunnel at the McDonald's playground, having hastily finished off a soft serve and small fries.
She clambered onto the roof of the slide, ignoring the 'Do Not Climb' sign and spidering aptly to the top.
"Iris! I know you can read! Get off there!"
The red-head rolled her eyes, 'You aren't my mother..' "Pssssh."
Ana crossed her arms, "There's a reason they have warnings, and rules." She pointed to the list of rules nailed to a wall near the shoe cubby, emphasising rules.
Iris shrugged, turning her innocently pretty chin defiantly up.
"Argh..." Tuning out to the grumbling of Ana and Lucy's suppressed giggles, she tapped triumphantly on the murky plastic window of a small room in the playground, grinning at the girl she befriended just minutes before. 'I told you I'm a ninja!' Iris mouthed, pristine ivory face crinkling up in a laughing smile as the dark haired girl inside grinned back.
Jumping down from the slide and hopping from foot to foot as she recovered from the ground-shock, Iris raced inside the tunnel, stomping up and high-fiving her friend.
"That's awesome!" The girl squeaked, jumping up and down and tugging excitedly on her short, hazel hair.
"Yeah!" As knowing one's name is not considered a requirement for McDonald's-playground-friends, that's all Iris replies.
"Tag?"
"Okay! You're it!" Iris slapped the brunette on the shoulder, screaming as she waddled away. McDonald's playgrounds don't allow much space for standing, or running for that matter.
The girl ran after her, also squealing as she chased Iris, twisting and turning through tunnels, leaping over steps and flopping through the strange maze-like exits and entries to the main bulk of the playground.

"Iris! We're going now!" Iris heard her sister's muffled call as she hid in the toddler's igloo, breathing heavily.
"We're going to the shore!"
'The shore!' Glancing quickly around, Iris made sure none of her friends, who had joined in on the tag game were nearby, ready to pounce. She crawled quickly out, not worrying about any dirt or crumbs that might stick to her short, green dress. "Really?! To see the mermaid?" She jumped to her feet as soon as she reached open space, and without waiting for an answer, she grinned, yelling to the other kids, "I have to go now! I'm seeing a mermaid! Bye!"
Lucy smiled, taking Iris' hand and leading her out to a chorus of kids yelling goodbye. And Ana grabbed her shoes, hopping out after them.
As they crossed the road, Iris beamed up at Lucy and Ana, and her shoe-less, dirty state didn't detract from her a bit, "So, where is she?"
"That's the thing, Iris, we have to find her!" Ana grinned.
"Hmm..." Iris nodded solemnly, "Is it like finding ladybugs?"
Laughing, Lucy flicked her hair over her shoulder as they reached the other side of the road, "A little, I think."
Once the three girls reached the hot, black sand of the beach, Iris ran ahead, sprinting to the shallow edge of the water and splashing in the salty foam, spluttering as the sea wind blew some of her strawberry hair into her mouth.
Iris grinned, bending to pick up a iridescent shell and running back up to Lucy and Ana, "Look!"
"Oh, that's very pretty, Iris!" Lucy took it from the young girl, "Would you like me to look after it? You can run ahead a little if you like... Just make sure you're within earshot, okay?"
Iris nodded, grinning from ear to ear, "Okay!"
The elder two girls watched her run ahead, stopping every now and again to pick up a shell or stare at the sand. They moved slowly behind, kicking the shallow water as they walked.

"Iris!?" Ana yelled her name for the fifth time, beginning to get worried, "Lucy, are you sure you don't know where she is?" Lucy shook her head, hugging her little pink cardigan tightly around herself, her face pale.
Ana groaned, "No, no, no..." Her breathing pace escalated, "No! We can't have lost her! I can't go home without her! We- we have to find her."
"But we have to tell your mum..." Lucy whispered, frowning.
Ana's voice softened slightly, "I'll text her." She took an iPhone out of her jeans' pocket, typing out a quick message, then, with shaking hands, but it back away. "Done."
