Chapter Five: The Twins

Mihael opened his eyes to see a pale-blue ceiling and slowly sat up, finding himself in a fluffy bed. "Nnn…Dinah, I had such an odd dream." He yawned, stretching out his arms. He could hear people talking in the other room and smiled a bit. "Looks like mom and dad are home."

He slipped out of bed and made his way to the door, listening closely. Three people seemed to be talking – two men and a feminine voice. He slowly pushed open the door and gasped at what he saw, stumbling back. "It…wasn't a dream." He whispered.

On the other side of the door were two human-looking men and a boy dressed in blue and white with long, floppy rabbit ears and a rabbit tail. He couldn't stop staring, paling as everything from before he'd gone to sleep came rushing back at him – his following the rabbit, his meeting the Cat, that creepy tea-party, and then…that was just something said out of anger? Why would anyone joke about killing someone?!

"I think he's awake." He heard Taro saying. "Rabbit, go talk to him."

"Alright." Nate turned and approached the door, Mihael stepping back so as not to be hit by it as he opened it wider. "Mihael, are you awake?"

Mihael nodded slowly.

Nate slowly stepped towards him. "I'm sorry I frightened you, so much you ran away. But, you have to face the reality of the situation; you're all alone in a strange world with no one to turn to but me. So, you have to trust me, okay?" He reached out and gently stroked his cheek. "I'll protect you from people like B, okay?"

"If the King wants us to come, then we should go!" Teru was saying excitedly in the background.

"I've told you time and again, Teru, NO! He just wants to trick us into giving up the child!" Taro banged his fist on the table.

Mihael peeked out at them. "Have they been like that for a while? What were you three talking about?"

Nate glanced away. "It's…nothing. Just something unimportant to the present."

"Oh." Mihael nodded, blinking.

Taro turned to them and entered the room. "Mihael, would you like some breakfast? It's hot off the stove."

"What are we eating?" Mihael asked, remembering that he'd only had small snacks and tea since he arrived.

"Pancakes and pears." Taro smiled.

"Oh boy! With syrup?" Mihael ran past Nate to sit at the table.

"Exercise caution!" Nate yelled as Mihael ran by him. "You stupid child!"

Taro chuckled a bit. "White Rabbit, is this boy stressing you out?"

"Yes." Nate sighed. "Do me a favor and watch him for me? I need to get my uniform back from the Mad Hatter." He walked towards the door. "I doubt he'll even notice I'm gone." He mumbled, watching him digging into his breakfast as he closed the door.

Teru watched Nate go and then turned to Taro. "Come on, can't we take him? He'll reward us handsomely if we make the Queen happy!" He pleaded.

"No!" Taro snapped. "We swore we would never assist in that sick pastime!"

Teru looked down, pouting. Taro ignored it and walked over to watch Mihael eating. "Enjoying your food?"

"Mmhm!" Mihael smiled up at him, and then frowned a bit as he looked around. "Where did the White Rabbit go? He should eat, too!"

"He'll eat when he gets back. He's getting his uniform." Taro explained calmly.

Mihael nodded, and then took another bite of his food, looking thoughtful.

Taro smiled softly, sitting in a chair across from him. "You know, you remind me of Alice."

"Alice?" Mihael looked up at him. "Who's Alice?"

"She was a good friend of mine." Taro said, lacing his fingers together under his chin, his elbows propped on the table-edge. "A sweet, curious child that wandered into 'Wonderland' again and again; we used to go by another name, but we have since forgotten that name."

"What happened to her?" Mihael asked.

Taro's gaze darkened and he sat up. "She died. The Queen of Hearts had her first taste of human blood that day."

"What do you mean by that?" Mihael set his fork down, eyes wide. "'First taste'?"

"Taro, don't tell him anymore!" Teru hissed.

Taro looked at Teru. "Doesn't he deserve to know why he was brought here?"

"The King will be angry!" Teru gripped his cousin's shoulders. "Don't tell him anything more!"

"We should help him escape." Taro looked at Mihael. "He's so little…"

"The Queen needs him." Teru shook his head, stepping away. "I won't side with you on this, cousin. I won't."

"Teru…" Taro stood up, frowning.

"What's going on?" Nate had returned, and was looking at Teru coldly. "What are you planning?"

"Nothing, White Rabbit." Teru grinned coldly. "You'd best be going with the boy, you're already quite late."

"Late?" Nate pulled out his pocket-watch. "Yes…we're late." He looked at Mihael. "Come on, then."

"Will I ever get to finish my meals here?" Mihael lamented, standing up and following Nate out into the woods again.

The cousins watched them go, Taro looking worried and Teru looking excited before he left the doorway.

No, Mihael. No you cannot. XD You are doomed to never finish a proper meal while here. DOOMED!

I kid, he'll get fed soon. XD
