Chapter Nine: Catch That Human!

To put it mildly, Mihael was terrified. He ran and ran until he was out in the gardens and then he ran some more until he was too exhausted to run anymore. Clutching the golden heart to his chest, he curled up as close to a bush as he could manage and let out a soft sob, trembling with fear and horror at what he'd just done.

"If she wasn't gonna eat me before, she certainly will now." He said miserably. Footsteps alerted him to someone approaching and he quickly got up and ran again. He could hear people shouting, calling for him, yelling for him to be caught, and he just ran and ran until he was completely lost in the gardens. Great.

"I need to get out of here." Mihael breathed. "Where's that damn mirror?"

"Mihael!" He heard someone calling, and he quickly darted off again, his blood pumping with fear and excitement.

Before he knew it, he had gotten back to the castle. Luckily, everyone was in the gardens looking for him and he had a chance to breathe. His relief was short-lived however, when he heard a horribly-familiar voice speaking.

"That wasn't a very nice thing to do, Mihael." The Mad Hatter said as he stepped out of the castle. "The Queen has been nothing but nice to you all day so what could have ever encouraged that action?"

Mihael frowned and clutched the pendant closer as the man walked down the staircase towards him. "I…I found out your secret. I found out about why I was brought here."

"Oh?" The Mad Hatter hummed as he stepped off the last step and walked towards him.

"That girl…did you feed her to the Queen?" Mihael asked, stepping back as The Mad Hatter approached.

"Did I feed—ahahahahahaha!" The Mad Hatter laughed, exposing his sharp teeth. "Did I feed her to the Queen? Hoo boy! Ah, no!" He wiped away a tear of laughter from his eye and grinned. "I don't give the Queen anything. We devoured her ourselves, and the Queen never saw her. Why do you think the White Rabbit was so wary of you being around us?" He licked his lips. "In fact, you look absolutely ravishing right now. I could eat you right up." He began to step closer to the boy, whose back was to a hedge and couldn't move away any further.

"HATTER!" The man was vaguely aware of someone calling his name before a vase was thrown from the staircase behind him. The vase hit him hard and he slumped to the ground with a groan.

Mihael looked up and was relieved to see Nate running down the steps towards him. "Rabbit!" He ran around The Mad Hatter, holding out the pendant. "Look, I got it!"

The Mad Hatter glanced over as Nate opened the pendant. He seemed to let out a sigh of relief before closing it. 'Peh.' He thought. 'Making sure her precious pendant is intact, I suppose.' He stood up and scowled at them. "White Rabbit, you know he's going to be eaten, anyway! Why not give it to me?"

Nate glared at him and then looked up as they heard footsteps approaching. Beyond saw Nate put his hand in his pocket briefly and then the area was filled with soldiers and people of the Court.

"Did you find him?!" Misa came through the crowd, smiling as she saw Nate holding the pendant. "Ah, good! Oh, my precious bunny, you found it!" She walked over and took the pendant, shooting Mihael a cold look. "Lock this boy up for a few days!"

"Your Majesty, surely more than a day is too much?" Nate offered. "After all, he is only a child, and you know how curious children are. And it does not seem to be harmed in any way."

"Hm…very well. One day." She gave a "hmph" and then walked away as soldiers grabbed Mihael.

Nate followed after them. "Don't struggle, Mihael. It'll be easier if you cooperate." He said to the struggling boy.

"I don't wanna be locked up!" Mihael cried.

"We'll take him from here, White Rabbit." One of the soldiers said.

"Of course." Nate nodded, pausing and giving a short bow.

"Wait! Don't let them take me! Nate! Naaaaate!" Mihael cried out as he was taken into a small building with barred windows.

"Don't worry, Mihael…" Nate whispered. "I won't leave you there."
