Hey guys! Thank you for sticking around all these chapters, most of them very late or confusing. I want to thank all the people who review regularly. I hope you enjoy this chapter, I worked very long and hard on it. Enjoy!xx
Michaels POV
I watched Eves eyes close slowly, sometimes opening again to make sure that I'm here, but it didn't take long for her to fall asleep. As her heartbeat slowed into a dull thud I got out of bed and began organizing. Towels in the shower when she wakes up, a selection of clean clothes that weren't packed in a suitcase. Smoothing the clothes into a neat bundle, I remembered the last time she ate, a handful of popcorn in the theatre, maybe Magnus was generous enough to slip her some food, considering he knew that humans have to eat.
Having set things out for her on her dressing chair, I let myself glance back at her, to look for signs of disturbance or nightmares. My heart skipped a beat as I gazed at her pale face, her high cheekbones and her long, dark lashes, how her dark hair curled behind her ear. The only thing that ruined the image was the gashes on her face that looked like really red smeared lipstick from the corner of her mouth and her cheek. As much as I wanted to ask her about them, there were other pressing issues at hand. Like breakfast.
I let myself out of the room and leaned against the door, letting out a deep sigh. It was all coming together, things are returning to normal, as normal as they can get. I guess the only thing that will change is the setting. I straightened up and felt my left hand beginning to tingle, under the cool skin, I watched as a flush of red ran through like a train in my veins. It must be my bloodline fighting Oliver's bloodline. Or the other way around. I never did entirely figure out what happened, only that the transfer was needed. I let the feeling pass, waited until the heat faded.
I bounded down the stairs and into the kitchen, finding Myrnin looking at a bottle of ketchup like it was a new object. Maybe it was for him.
"Your blood supply is low." He commented, not taking his eyes off the bottle as I arranged a pan and all the ingredients for breakfast.
"Maybe you should stop hogging it all the time then." I poured some oil into the pan and started to make scrambled eggs, multitasking between that and the bundle of oranges I was squeezing into a jug. Eve wasn't the only one needing food, everyone seemed exhausted.
"I do not 'hog'. I indulge." He smiled a crooked smile and ran off with the bottle. I guess that means no ketchup with breakfast. I finished the eggs and put them into a plate, just as the bacon began crackling.
It was weird to cook, I usually help to chop things up or tidy up, but I admit its way more fun doing it with vampire speed. I could hear footsteps from above, probably the rest of the house realising there's food on offer. I just hope it's edible; vampires are probably not the best cooks. Since no-one was down yet, I decided to set the table, like a real meal, like a family.
"Dude, all you need is a pink apron and a girl scout badge." Shane gawked at the food, taking in the table and the whole setting. I guess I wasn't winning any manly points for this.
"Whatever, I guess you won't want breakfast then." I raised my eyebrows and watched as Shanes face fell, looking longingly at the plate of bacon. I couldn't help but laugh as he tried to shove me, a failed effort from him. "Hey, you guys sharing?" Claire swung round the door, hair still wet as a few water drops clung to her skin, fighting gravity.
"Sure. Hey, I didn't get to thank you properly for helping Eve. So, thanks." I manoeuvred Shane and hugged her quickly, nodding my head slightly and moving away towards the stairs. She merely hugged me back, too surprised to say something back.
I rushed upstairs to find Eve in a towel, looking at the clothes I set out. She merely cocked her head at my presence, radiating heat from her shower. I decided to lie on the bed, eyes focused on the ceiling, listening to the towel brush on her skin as she dropped it and the stretch of clothing as she dressed. It wasn't long until she was curled at my side and I was combing my fingers through her wet hair.
"I made breakfast downstairs; you better hurry before Shane eats everything." Her body rumbled as it let out a small chuckle, and I hugged her closer.
"Wait, so you actually cooked?"
Claires POV
The food is strangely good, considering the cook doesn't eat much. Sure, Michael enjoys tacos, but who doesn't? I poured myself some orange juice, and looked out the window as the sun climbed lazily in the autumn morning. I wasn't even sure what day it is anymore.
"Hey, what day is it today?" As stupid as the question seemed, I lost track of days a long time ago. I waited for a response between Shanes bites of food. Boys.
"Pretty sure it's Thursday" he said as he looked around the table, mouth still chewing. So attractive. But that's standard guy behaviour, right? It's not like I didn't notice how his deep brown eyes watched me whenever I wasn't looking, or how he lingered close to me. I didn't know what to do about this, only that I needed things to run their course.
Busy as I was thinking this over breakfast, Michael and Eve decided to show up, basically holding each other. She did look better now; some sleep, a shower and clean clothes really did wonders to her.
"Mikey, where's the ketchup?" Shane actually stopped eating to speak to them, and Michael dashed into the kitchen, a blur to our eyes.
"Go haggle with Myrnin for your precious ketchup." Michael appeared back next to Eve and threw a bag of stale donuts at Shane, who caught them expertly. As much as I wanted to enquire, it probably wouldn't do any good. Or make any sense.
Shane just sighed and put the bag on the table, defeated, as Eve picked a seat next to me and looked over the leftovers of the food. I dug my phone out, and checked the time, 10am, still about an hour left before leaving. It was strange to think that we won't be living here anymore, how many disasters we survived here in this place. I doubt our new home would preserve spirits after death.
"We should assign weapons." Michael dashed into the kitchen again and came back with a familiar black combat bag. We had some individual weapons stashed in our rooms, but this was the biggest stash in the house. At the mention of weapons, Myrnin appeared in the room, and silently put down a bundle of cloth on the table.
"Silver." He said, as he opened it up to reveal a bunch of shot gun pellets, and a few bullets, his frantic eyes counting them, probably making sure he brought all of them. Its typical for Myrnin to be forgetful.
"Whoa. Well that should be fine, we're only packing as a precaution. This being Morganville, it's never a bad thing to be armed." Michael zipped open the bag, showing the array inside. I just couldn't imagine Myrnin with one of Eve's bedazzled stakes, or looking threatening with one. I noticed how he was dressed, all in black, with a leather vest over a black collared shirt. No sign of tropical colours of flip flops.
"Breakfast and guns. My two favourite things." Shane grabbed a few stakes and examined them, then shoved them in his pocket. I don't doubt he has more upstairs.
"We should get all the luggage in Michael's car, with the sun up its probably best." I picked up some canisters of silver nitrate and went upstairs to pack my backpack.
We got to founders square a little bit early, all 5 of us squashed in Michaels vamp sedan. While Michael and Eve were at the front, I was squashed between Shane and Myrnin, grateful for the ride to be over. As advised by a guard we parked the car near the square and got out, sun shade protection for Michael and identity protection for me. As Eve pointed out, most of the town knew I was dead, so wearing the wig we got from Dallas and some plain clothes would help. We hoped.
I hitched my backpack on my shoulders and followed the group towards the crowd of people standing near the steps of city hall, where a little pedestal stood vacant, a final address from Amelie.
"It's strange, none of the messengers are here, and I'm pretty sure people are missing." Michael mused to himself, but I could still hear him.
"There are not many vampires here anyway, they probably left already. And there's the human resistance group, they would never attend this even if it was to save them." I tried to make a logical answer, but my fingers were still restless as they drummed against my leg, a new habit I was picking up.
"You ok? People won't recognise you, they're too stressed to look close enough." Shane's voice came behind me, and as I turned around he took my drumming fingers and held them in his hands, warming them from the cold. Always comforting me. Always there for me. He smiled a sheepish grin and looked like he was about to say something but Amelie drew our attention.
"Attention, Morganville, before we move on I have a few things to say." She tapped at the microphone, drawing attention and also groans from people. Shane let my hand go and I noticed how uneasy Myrnin was next to me. I didn't have time to ask as Amelie started again.
"Due to the invasion of these creatures, the draug, we have been forced to move. To move away from Morganville and start anew, a better and prosperous life. Though it may not seem the nature for us to flee, it is with good cause and reason; something that I had to make sure was the right decision for this town." I glanced away from her to look at the crowd, they were all listening, except for Myrnin who was fidgeting next to me. I managed to catch his gaze, the gaze of a frightened animal.
"This town has gone through many changes and I make it my mission to improve it, for both the human and the vampire population, though there will always be people who disagree with my decisions-"
A slow clapping started from the back of the crowd, as if to mock the founder and her speech. People were turning around to find the cause of the sign, I glanced at Michael who seemed as clueless as the rest of us. Amelie too was searching for the cause of the sound, and I noticed Oliver behind her, his hand resting lightly on her shoulder.
The clapping grew louder, becoming closer. People started to part in the way of the stranger. I managed to catch a glimpse of the intruder, black hair and a flash of pale transparent skin. No-one else saw, no-one else realised who was among us. It seemed as if my blood turned to ice, stranding me here, gripping Myrnins and Shane's arms.
"Fine speech Amelie, you always speak of the better good, of humans having the same rights as you." He spat the words at her, causing a ripple through the crowd. "How can you promise them that when you can't keep promises to your family? How?" He roared the last word; making people around him take a step back. I tried to look for an escape, even though we were nowhere near him and he didn't know I was alive, but all I spotted was Jason standing across the street and something shiny on the floor.
"Is that-" Michael turned around from in front of us, but I never heard his question. Deafening screams came from the centre of the crowd; it was a horrible sound, something that would have driven me insane had it not stopped. It was replaced by the sound of people running and shouting. I saw Eve shout and Shane getting his stakes out, Michael growling and the high sound of hysteria making its way through the crowd. I couldn't move, not until someone jostled me forward in their attempt to flee.
It wasn't just Magnus anymore, his thralls popped up from the ground clearing some space for him in front of Amelie. I didn't care much about Amelies response, only getting out of this alive. Automatically I reached for the silver nitrate canisters, and stood alert for any signs of approaching danger.
"What's his plan?" Myrnin wondered, causing my eyes to search for him, scanning the crowds to find him, standing in what seemed to be a huge continuous circle of draug on the floor. The draug looked different, but I didn't have time to look anymore as something wet gripped my throat and threw me to the floor. It was déjà vu, being strangled on the floor by cold hands that gnawed at my flesh. It was only instinct to smash the canister on the being, but it simply made its death grip harder. I started to see lights, my head sore and lacking oxygen as the silver spread through the thing and killed it slowly; it was a matter of time which one died first.
A silver stake protruded from its chest, as it was dragged off me, its featureless face blooming black as the poison spread. My head was swimming as I was hoisted up to a standing position, being held by Shane as Myrnin stamped on the thing.
"Thanks guys." I managed, regaining my breath and scrubbing the remnants of draug from my neck. It was like weird jelly, something that made me want to throw up. Nobody had time to answer as more draug surrounded us, but the thought that struck me was scarier. They were smarter, that draug didn't show any signs of letting me go even though it was dying itself.
Even as people scattered, more and more draug would appear, and more would be left on the floor, dying. Pale people and black jelly littered the floor, even as we were fighting they were pushing us towards his weird circle.
One made a grab for Eve, and Michael got in the way of it, being dragged off by a few of them. My canisters wouldn't help, so I jumped towards the nearest one stabbed it with a stake, hoping for some sort of reaction. Nothing happened; it was as if my attack didn't happen.
"Michael!" Eve trashed at a draug, shooting one and taking another down. It was only then I saw the weird centre of my opponent, in the murky body of the draug was a dark centre, swirling and totally ignoring me. I felt my hand tingle and by instinct I drove my hand through and grabbed the thing, taking it out by pure force. My arm started to glow, burning the twisting mess inside of my palm, the draug collapsed, letting me see Michaels searching hand, which I grabbed and pulled as best as I could. Myrnin joined me and between us, and Shane and Eve attacking from the outside we pulled out a bleeding and whimpering Michael.
"I saw-I saw you Claire." His blue eyes shook, his jacket showing huge rips and exposed skin that began to smoulder in the desert sun. Shane took of his jacket and put it around a shaking Michael, ignoring everyone's questioning gazes.
"I don't know how but they're stronger. We have to find Amelie and end this." So Myrnin noticed it too, the draug's carelessness towards themselves.
"There! I can barely see her, she's moving too fast." Michael pointed in the general direction, and I could catch glimpses of her blonde head between the people and the draug. We weren't the only ones fighting.
We charged forwards in our small huddle, stabbing and attacking any draug that got in our way, an intense effort from our part. We reached Amelie, who was fighting in front of Magnus, aided by Oliver. Teeth were flashing everywhere and occasionally dark crimson eyes would be clear to focus on.
"Smart, don't you think?" Magnus turned to us and pointed towards the floor, his circle of draug. But there was something silver floating inside them, something suspended. He had a leather bound book in one hand and a small fire near his feet, something red was burning. I tried to force myself to look at the ground, to keep my gaze away from his but the game was up as he forced my chin up with his slimy hands and ripped the wig off.
"Interesting how you are alive. When I kill someone, they stay dead." His eyes flashed past me towards Eve and his face burst into a smile. He kept his gaze and started murmuring something, dropping black shiny material into the makeshift fire that I recognised to be from Eve's skirt.
"Thanks for looking after my vessel, she's perfect for Felicity." His grin grew wider, his teeth were showing, sharp and very much like a vampires. Then I realised, the draug on the floor, that was the perfect salt line, the perfect way to conceal and protect it.
And I realised what the book was, something passed down from generations, something that Amelie was fighting to get to with the help of Oliver. A book that would ensure Magnus's victory, and his weapon for getting back his Felicity.
Myrnin tried to jump on Magnus, only to be sent flying in the opposite direction, towards the podium, as Magnus reached out and pushed his body in that direction.
"Myrnin!" I screamed, but he didn't hear me. "We have to break the line! He's casting something, something that involves you, Eve. He wants to take Amelie down." I shouted to the rest of them, causing Michael to move towards Eve and Shane to give me a strange look. Amelie joined us now, with Oliver, their pristine clothes stained with the black of dead draug. It seemed like we were circling around, always moving.
"Impressive, but also too late. When I regain Felicity, we will serve justice on Amelie, for breaking her promises. And betraying her family." It was like Magnus was untouchable behind his stupid circle; he had eyes on all of us.
"Now, be so kind and give me the girl, I might let you young people live." He stretched his hand out, just out of the circle towards Eve. It was like time froze for a moment, the decision hanging over everyone.
"Don't hurt the girl; it is with me you quarrel." Amelie stepped forward, putting Eve behind her and in one smooth movement Magnus grabbed her by the neck, lifting her over the line, his fangs inches away from Amelies throat.
"True, but I still plan to kill you." He held her close, and out of his pocket he took out a blue powder and threw it in the fire. I watched in horror as the smoke raised up, hanging around like a fog in the clear of day. Oliver pushed past me, bared his teeth at Magnus, his eyes probably going crimson red, but he turned to Michael and pointed at Eve.
"Kill her! Kill the girl!" I watched as Michaels face set in stone defiance, but then his face flushed red, his eyes flashed crimson and he pushed Eve to Shane, who caught her and backed away.
"You're my bloodline now! You have to obey me!" Oliver screeched as Shane guided Eve away, only for her to collapse on him. I rushed to them and watched as her eyes rolled backwards, her body begin to twitch as the smoke advanced.
Felicity.
