I saw her.

I saw her face again.

That image.

Was it real.

Is it this real?

"Mom?" I whispered aloud. I drifted between sleep and reality.

...

Saturday. 11:12 pm.

I became aware of the morning light. Waking up I feel my eyes open slightly. I catch a sudden glare of the dimly lit room only before slamming them shut. My throat elicited a low groan, and I tossed over to my side away from the sunlight.

I wasn't fully awake, but a blistering headache kept pounding my head.

I let my mind drift for a bit. I wondered where Jazmine went after she left The Spot last night. Is she safe? I felt myself tense up after that thought. I also wondered If Caez really did smash three girls? Damn the nigga was skilled.

My eyes twitched and finally adjusted to the light. I rolled over on my back and stretched out my arms and legs. I sat up, Riley wasn't in his bed. I felt groggy and lightheaded. I shouldn't have had that damned drink last night.

"Shit," I muttered, touching my temples.

The door to the room swung open. In came granddad struggling to walk in with his cane. I immediately got up to aid him inside the room.

"Move boy, I can help myself. " He grumbled while pushing my hand away. I glanced at him, with every passing day his brown, wrinkly old skin looked more dis-cared. His eyes, weary, tired. Granddad hobbled past me and sat at the table which was by the window. His back stooped over as if he carried invisible weights upon them. I winced inwardly.

"You better get washed up," He coughed with phlegm, followed by a wheeze. "I got a doctor's appointment today, I need you to drop me off. Ruckus is occupied with several jobs so I need you."

I rubbed my face and sighed. My vision was still adjusting to the light in the room. I scanned the room, as everything went back into focus.

Although I felt nauseated, granddad's health really started to worry me. He refused to take medications, stating he didn't want to live to 110. That he was happy. That he was satisfied with his age, and accepted the fact that...he's near...

He's near.

"Yeah...lemme just," I stopped mid sentenced and saw Cindy peering out from the closet, bringing up an index finger to her pink stained lips. Shh! My eyes widened than went back to normal.

"Speak boy!" Granddad said in a raspy voice. "I ain't got all day." He broke out into laughter "I for damn sure ain't got all (cough) dayyyy!" He coughed deeply and wheezed. Slamming his thigh for support, as if he was gagging.

"Hehehe old man still got it" He chuckled.

"Lemme just get ready." I assured him. I didn't like when he joked like that.

"I'll be waiting." Granddad moseyed his way out of the room. I waited till he went downstairs before I spoke to Cindy.

"Is he gone?" She half-whispered.

"What the hell you doing in the closet?"

She gave me a cold glare. Giving me the You know why I'm here look.

She came out in a big Miami Heat sweat shirt and boxers. All of which belonged to Riley. Her hair was in a matted mess and she looked like hell. I shook my head and didn't even attempt to ask her anything else. This wasn't the first time she was hiding in our closet and it probably wouldn't be the last. Apparently Riley must've came late, or early in the morning before anyone got up. Honestly, I really couldn't keep up with Riley. As much as I would like him to stay out of trouble, I always find him going back to it.

Cindy huffed angrily and began immediately searching for something in a rush. Riley soon came in with a glass of orange juice in hand. "C-Murph you gotta bounce man." He said dismissively. He didn't want to get caught, with her sleeping over, again.

Granddad almost had a heart attack last time, literally.

She paused, "I know that." She said it through clenched teeth.

"Okay, attitude." Riley rolled his eyes and took a sip.

I could tell that Cindy was tired of the 'hoe treatment'. I wasn't exactly sure nor did I care about their 'relationship' but I could tell that Cindy wanted more outta Riley. More attention, less cheating.

"I ain't heard from J-Dub where she at Huey?"

I ignored him pointedly and left the room.

Does it look I like care?

...

I went to the clinic where Granddad had his appointment. The waiting room smelled like medicine and...mothballs. It was a clinic for the elderly.

I sat there and sunk into my book. The Vagabond, By Colette. Soon the chatter around me became silent.

"Huey get in here and take your brother with you!" She yelled. I still have a few good memories left of her.

Her skin, honey colored. She was thin and had thick curly black hair.

I look like her.

My favorite part about her is when she would hold me, I would play in her hair. Just twirl my little fingers on every long curl until I'd feel my eye lids get heavy. There were times, when Riley would play in it, I'd get jealous. I chuckled at myself.

"Boy!"

I nearly jumped out of my skin when I heard granddad's stern voice rip me out of my haziness.

"Hi! Are you Mr. Freeman's Grandson?" A short white woman stood beside Granddad with a clipboard in her possession. Granddad was in a wheelchair.

"Why is he in a wheelchair?" I demanded and ignored her question. She blinked twice and her smile fell. Granddad had a sullen look on his face, as if he didn't want me to worry about him or his illnesses.

"Well, I'm assuming you're his grandson, umm he's going to the ER at Woodcrest Memorial Hospital."

My eyes widened, "E.R.?"

"Oh it's nothing to worry about boy, just run on home and I'll be back before dinner and make sure Riley washes his ass cause lord knows he don't. And I don't want no girls in the house," He looked thoughtful "unless they fo me." He grinned.

The secretary chuckled. "Oh you're so funny!"

"I try to tell 'em, I still got it! Hehehe-"

"Why is he going to the ER? What's wrong with him?" I repeated. The little lady stopped laughing. Granddad looked at me, and this look...

"The doctor decided that Mr. Freeman would need immediate 24 hour care. They will just monitor him for a few days, after that he should be home within a few days. Just as a precaution, nothing to worry about." She beamed.

Bullshit.

"Doc found something he ain't like..." He muttered. My heart raced, I felt anxious. I felt like I needed to do something.

"Should I-"

"No boy, go home...It'll be fine. Now go." He looked at me with a crooked, tired grin. He's still holding on.
