Missing in Action

Davina awakened to insistent knocking on her door. Every part of her body was aching from exhaustion because of the two powerful spells she had performed, so she had no desire to move at all. She pulled the pillow over her head, hoping they would go away. But the knocking continued.

Usually she would open the door with her powers, but today it seemed she'd be doing it the normal way. She got up from the bed, grumbling all the way, as she went over to invite in the persistent someone who awakened her from her sleep.

To Davina's surprise, standing on the other side of the doorframe was the source of her curiosity, that resulted in her current state. It didn't take long for her to notice that he wasn't in the best of moods. For a moment, Davina felt panic course through her. What if he realized that she invaded his mind?

"Sorry for disturbing you, but I need your help." Elijah said with the most neutral face Davina had seen on him so far.

"Om, okay. Come in." Davina stepped aside to let him enter. Without closing the door, she went over to her bed and plopped down onto it. She tilted her head to the side, showing him that she was listening.

Elijah locked his intense gaze onto the young witch's eyes before he started to speak. "I'm aware that I already owe you a spell of your choosing, but if you lend your assistance, I will give you three more in addition, also your choices."

Now, this was certainly interesting. Davina saw the veiled impatience in the Original's body language, no matter how neutral his face was. He was too tense, too rigid. But this was too good of a chance to get what she needed and she didn't want to waste it.

"I don't know what do you want, but for the day, I'm not really up to performing any high maintenance spells." Davina stated her exhaustion apparent in her tone. "You forgot to mention that untying that rope wasn't simply for me to learn better focus, but also to sever a strong bond between two individuals."

Elijah heard the reproach in her words, but he didn't do anything that was out of the boundaries of their agreement. Despite everything, the girl still wore her rose colored glasses and it was his belief that those glasses needed to be gotten rid of if she wanted to survive in the supernatural world. This was only one of the lessons she needed to learn.

"However, I like the idea of seeing more of your mother's spells." Davina quipped, shifting her legs a little so she was sitting more comfortably. "So what can I do for you today?"

Elijah was glad that he didn't have to persuade the girl, as he expected a little bit more opposition. "I'd like you to find a girl for me."

Davina sat up straighter. She couldn't squash the romantic inside of her and hoping that Elijah would ask of her to find Elena for him. This request she would be more than happy to help with.

"Her name is Hayley, she is a werewolf…"

"Stop!" Davina halted him before he could go further. "I'm not that good with locator spells. Actually, I wanted to ask for one with the properties that I'd be able to find someone by knowing solely their name and what they look like."

Elijah didn't like that the little witch cut into his sentence, and her specification for a locator spell was also grounds for worry. He was aware that Marcellus found the witches in the Quarter by using portraits that Davina sketched. He had no inclination of giving her something that would make Marcel's goons' jobs that much easier. Unfortunately, they needed to find Hayley and they needed to do it in the timeliest fashion.

"I'm in possession of a spell that will suit your requirements." Elijah said solemnly. "The girl, Hayley…"

"I've no idea how she looks like, and I'm not particularly fond of werewolves." Davina cut off the Original again. She was sure that if she wasn't so important a piece of the puzzle in the war that was going on in her town, he'd already retaliated against her in some way because of her rude behavior. "You will give me that spell no matter if I help you with your current problem or not. And the only kind of low powered locator spell I know how to perform and would be successful in performing requires the blood of this werewolf or one of her close relatives."

Elijah very much hoped that she wouldn't say that. It was also apparent that she didn't want to help him find Hayley for some reason. He doubted that it was because she had a dislike for werewolves. There was something more to this. He only entertained the idea of Davina knowing about the baby for a few seconds before discarding it completely.

"I'll have the blood." Elijah told her waving his hand regally, saying with this gesture that this was no problem. Davina wanted to frown at this, but thankfully managed to rein it in at the last moment.

"Okay." Davina agreed, a little bit of her reluctance seeping through her voice. "You bring me the spell I want and at least 20 milliliters of the blood for the spell."

Elijah only nodded to her before he vanished from her room in vampire speed.

Davina was annoyed that he asked her something like this, when he was so clearly devoted to someone else. She didn't know who this Hayley was that Elijah found her important enough to offer something like he did. She also had the suspicion that if she had asked for more for this little favor, he would have given into her demands without much fuss.

For a moment, Davina thought about discarding her plan of luring this Elena into town. She shrugged and released a heavy sigh. No, she would find her and bring her to New Orleans no matter what. She wanted to know the woman who could make a being as old, powerful, and experienced as Elijah devote his soul, his whole being to her so completely.

-o-o-o-o-o-

It was almost nine in the evening, when Elijah managed to return to the church attic. As he climbed the stairs leading to the little witch Elijah thoughts revolved around the last few days. Despite his outwardly cool, composed demeanor, Elijah was very frustrated with not only the situations in New Orleans, but with himself and his dearest siblings.

After his visit with Davina, he and Niklaus decided to try an alternate solution. They had gone to Marcel's compound to discover some kind of fight between the lowly creatures that dared to call themselves vampires.

It was a long shot, but still he hoped that Marcel was the one who was responsible for Hayley's disappearance. Elijah had entertained the idea of killing the disgusting lot, aside from their goals. In his opinion, it would have solved their problems with Marcellus quite effectively. For a second he remembered his baby brother, Kol. He wouldn't have hesitated offing the lot the first time he stepped into their old home.

The brothers' annoyance only grew when Marcel came back to them that he couldn't lend any of the Quarter's witches for a locator spell. He hadn't gone into details of the whys, but Elijah suspected that Davina contacted her appointed protector Elijah sneered at the word in his mind that she wasn't able to monitor any casting for a while because of her exhaustion. Taking into account what the witches would do in the hours Davina couldn't detect what they were doing, he wholly understood Marcel's decision, as he himself would have done exactly the same thing.

So they left Marcel with naught to show for their troubles. In his impatience, Klaus took off on his own without any hint of his plans, after giving him the blood that the little witch would need for the spell, leaving Elijah to return to their anxious sister alone. After Rebekah ranted for a few seconds about their incompetence, they finally departed to his private study where he kept all the grimoires he acquired over the centuries. As fast as possible, they found the specific spell that Davina requested of him, which took a considerably longer time that he first predicted even with their speed of reading through the delicate books.

Elijah noticed that the door to Davina's room was open, so with a quick knock on the wood to get her attention from the book she was reading, he entered without further invitation. He saw that the girl was still exhausted, though she tried to mask it quite admirably considering her age.

"Good evening." Elijah greeted her with a little more warmth to his tone that was his usual. "I brought the things you've requested of me."

Davina could barely contain the glee that wanted to break out on her face as she put aside her book and went over to a cleared table which only had a map on it. Elijah walked over to stand by her side. He made a cursory glance to the map, noting that it was not one but actually two separate maps: one of the state and another much more detailed of New Orleans and its nearby territories. He sent a small smile to the witch in appreciation of her preparations.

Davina observed as Elijah pulled out a similar leather folder to the one he had brought the previous pages to her in. She itched to snatch it from the Original's hands.

Elijah found her childlike impatience and happiness quite endearing, so he took out the page that contained the spell she wanted and handed it to her. In a sense, it was rewarding to see her thirst for knowledge and her enthusiasm as she devoured the words written on the sheet of old parchment.

Elijah let her peruse it for a little longer, before asking for her attention by pulling out the vial containing his brother's blood from another one of his suit's inner pocket. Davina snapped her attention back to the Original as she sensed his exaggerated movements to draw her back from the fascinating magic he just handed to her. The spell was perfect for what she wanted. She could easily combine it with one she used to access someone's dream and a mild compulsion to get Elena here.

"Right, back to business." Davina stated as she reached for the blood. She unscrewed the lid and poured half of the contents on the detailed map of New Orleans. She closed her eyes, started the lyrical chant while concentrating on finding the ones who were connected to the person's blood on the map. This took less energy than looking for someone specific who she knew nothing about beside her first name. If the spell showed more locations, from then on, it would be Elijah's problem of distinguishing between the individuals. And it has the added benefit that she had more time contacting and bringing Elena over, if Elijah had to investigate more places.

Elijah observed the three different dots that the blood formed on the map, realizing that one showed Rebekah in their home, the other himself at Davina's place and the third one was heading into deep within the Bayou. He sensed a spike in the magic, so the spell most likely was completed. He looked over to the girl, seeing her opening her eyes. Elijah wanted to pick the map up before she had the chance of examining it, but refrained. Sooner or later, this slip of a girl would find out from one source or another that Hayley was actually a part of their family. Davina was a clever girl. He had no doubts that she would put it together quickly that the different dots represented a person tied to either Niklaus or Rebekah; as he wasn't able to provide her with the blood the first time when he came to her earlier that day.

"There." Davina looked down to see what the spell showed. She was a little disappointed that it only showed three people. As she observed the locations a bit closer, she felt her jaw drop in surprise. "The girl is not related to your family in a 'you turned her into a vampire' way. This Hayley is actually related to you."

Before Davina could say more, Elijah interrupted her. "Thank you for your help. I greatly appreciate it. I would ask of you to keep this information to yourself for the time being." Elijah saw the frown forming on her face. "I will satisfy your curiosity about Hayley when I return. But for now, I request your discretion on the matter."

Davina looked deeply into the intense brown gaze of the oldest vampire in existence before shaking her head. "All right, but it better be an interesting bedtime story. I will come up with something for the three additional spells you promised too."

Elijah deliberated what he read in Davina's expression and her words before minutely bowing with his head in agreement. "Goodbye, Davina."

The witch traced with her senses the leaving Original, until she was sure that he was nowhere near her place. She clapped her hands in joy, quickly snatching up the spell then going over to her bed, plopping down on it to read it and memorize it.

After she was sure, that she understood all the intricacies of the spell, Davina lay down on her bed to be able to better relax. She hoped that eleven at night, Elena would be already asleep; so when she found her Davina could immediately approach her in her dreams.

Davina started to regulate her breathing to achieve the meditative state that was necessary to succeed. As she felt herself retreat into her own mind, she pictured Elena and concentrated on finding her. She was surprised that it didn't take a long time to locate her at all. Then, she realized that she found her so quickly because Elena was a supernatural whose mind and power was so much more easier to distinguish for witches.

Davina willed that she'd be able to materialize the projection of her wherever the girl was. She appeared in a place which, at a closer inspection, seemed to be a college dorm room. Luck was on her side, as she saw Elena preparing for bed while she spoke with a bubbly blond, obviously a vampire too, based on the blood bag the girl was currently sipping from.

Davina watched their interaction in a little bit of envy. She missed her friends. Maybe she and Elena could become friends someday.

Davina shifted on her spot a little nervously as she waited for the two vampires to finally retire for the night. She wasn't too happy with the discovery that Elena seemed to have a boyfriend who she loved and was obviously loyal to, despite her friend's obvious disapproval of the relationship. She was curious. What kind of a man had Elena chosen to date?

Only from the half an hour she observed Elena with the use of her magic, Davina knew a lot of things about her. Firstly, Elena was very loyal to those she deemed a friend. She loved with all her being, was very compassionate, but would do anything to protect those who were important to her. Davina understood that this trait of hers was one of the main aspects that must have enticed Elijah. Though, she also grasped the fact that regardless of her morals and compassionate nature, Elena would do quite underhanded things if she felt herself justified. Their conversation about this Silas individual proved that much.

Actually, what they were speaking about was quite disturbing. It seemed, that Elena hadn't spent the last few days on campus enjoying the life of a normal college student. She only came back an hour before Davina made her consciousness materialize in this place. The girls were telling what happened to each of them while the other was away. Davina had never heard so convoluted a story and she was living in New Orleans.

Finally they got into their beds to sleep. Davina decided to wait to be sure that Elena was in deep enough for her to access her dreams. After ten minutes of waiting, she went over to Elena's bed and sat down beside the sleeping form of the brunette, placing her right hand above the vampire's head while beginning to concentrate on entering her mind.

Davina felt quite out of it, when she entered Elena's dream. She observed her surroundings and discovered that she was in a lake house. She heard laughter from outside from the direction of the huge sliding glass doors that overlooked to the beautiful scenery of the lake and surrounding mountains. She went through the living room, seeing a lot of pictures of the family. As she opened the door, her gaze was drawn to the happy family playing in the water. There were the parents, the father chasing after a little boy and girl.

"You don't belong here."

Davina whirled around at the sound to find herself face to face with Elena. She was a little wary of her reaction to Davina invading her dream, but Elena just walked up to her side and looked at the playing family with a smile on her face that was strangely nostalgic and serene at the same time. The witch realized that they were observing a much younger Elena with her family.

"Sorry to intrude without invitation." Davina started in a nervous tone, trying not to fidget under Elena's gaze when she turned her attention to the teenage girl.

To her surprise, Elena extended her hand. "I'm Elena Gilbert, but I have the suspicion you already knew that."

Davina hesitated before taking the offered hand, shaking it once. "Davina Claire, I'm a witch from New Orleans." She felt the need to tell her companion a bit more.

Elena only tilted her head to the side, the warmness in her eyes never leaving. "One of my best friends is a witch too." Elena continued. "So why have you felt the need to visit me, Davina?"

"You aren't angry." Davina stated in astonishment. Her curiosity was piqued by the mention of Elena's witch friend.

"We are in my mind, I can tell that you don't want to cause me any harm." Elena explained while her gaze went back to watching her family.

Davina didn't know where to start as she prepared for much more reluctance from Elena before she agreed to listen to what she wanted to say. "I was curious about you."

"Because I'm the doppelganger." Elena said in a resigned tone, her shoulders slumping. It was obvious that she wasn't a least bit happy about that, whatever it meant to be a doppelganger.

"Oh, no." Davina quickly reassured the girl beside her. Elena looked her way again with more curiosity and less resentment in her eyes. "I was curious because I met someone who… likes you very much." The witch settled on the word like, because she didn't feel it right to tell Elena that she had a man who loved her more than anything. That had to come from Elijah. Elena needed to hear this directly from the Original.

"I can't imagine a single person in New Orleans who would like me. The only people I know who live there are not particularly fond of me, neither am I of them."

The young girl wasn't too happy with Elena's assessment. Why the hell would the woman think that Elijah didn't like her? Davina would give her that Elijah had an impressive poker face, but surely Elena at least had to suspect that the Original felt something more for her.

"Not even Elijah?" Davina decided to not beat around the bush, as her confusion grew. She heard a sigh escaping from her companion.

"The last time I met with him, he was in a relationship with Katherine Pierce. I know that he left her behind when he decided to join Klaus in New Orleans, but the fact remains that him falling for the manipulative bitch's lies disappointed me even with my humanity switched off."

Davina could only stare in horror at Elena. Just how badly had Elijah botched his chances up?

Davina was grateful that they had a very long time to speak, because in dreams, the mind worked much faster than when awake.

For several hours, they shared their life story for the first time with someone who wasn't so deeply invested in the mess that was able to offer a honest opinion and helpful advice.

Davina also came to the conclusion that Elijah was as much an idiot as any man. Though, he should know better at his age.

She had her suspicions on when exactly the man became aware of his feelings for Elena. She could also concede that by that time, they betrayed each other so many times and on so deep a level that if Elijah ever wanted to be with Elena, he had his work cut out for him.

Now, she understood why he did nothing to seek Elena's affections. He believed that she would never love him, that maybe he deserved his heartbreak, to be in love alone, after everything he had done to her.

What gave Davina hope about them was that she could see how well they fit together. They had the same priorities in life: family above all. Both of them having strong personalities guaranteed that with a little time Elena would grow into the woman who could stand as an equal beside Elijah.

Elijah's family was a different shit storm altogether. Add to the mess that Elena was truly in love with this Damon guy. And unfortunately, Davina had to give it to Elena, Damon loved her and protected her no matter what.

So, much to her annoyance, Davina decided to change tactics. If Elena couldn't be persuaded to come to New Orleans because of Elijah, then she'd ask her to come to get her away from town. As she pondered her idea even more, Davina saw more benefits with each second. If she got out of New Orleans in secret, she suspected that Mystic Falls with its numerous problems would be the last place on Earth that anyone would search for her. And she honestly wanted to help this woman who got as shitty a hand from the fates as herself.

"I can't understand why would you like to come to Mystic Falls when I just told you about what is going on here." Elena looked quite put out by the mere idea of getting the sixteen year old into even more danger than she was currently. What with her being secreted away from the witches under the protection of a vampire who controlled the town.

"Elena, try to look it at from my perspective." Davina sent her most pleading gaze towards Elena. "If I help you get Bonnie back, she can help me learn to control my magic until I lose it. Plus, Mystic Falls is the last place where the Originals would search for me on Earth. And even if they would, I'd be under your and Caroline's care, guaranteeing that they'd leave me alone."

Davina saw that Elena opened her mouth to protest about what she said concerning the Original brothers. "You said it yourself that the hybrid is smitten with Caroline, and believe me, Elijah respects you too much to put up a fight and the two of them are dealing with enough trying to keep their brat of a sister in line."

"What about Marcel?" Elena asked with the sole intention of deterring Davina from her insane plan. She was also skeptical about the Originals' reaction. Klaus, maybe, but she and Elijah had burned any bridges that were between them a long time ago.

"Marcel can't afford it to spread over the Quarter that I have left, because he would lose his hold over the witches. So he will do everything to keep my disappearance hush-hush." Davina stated confidently. She saw that she was chipping away Elena's resistance.

"We can help each other, Elena." Davina persuaded in a sweet voice. She only looked back at Elena innocently when the other girl sent an annoyed glare in her direction.

"What if the witches stumble upon the info of you being away from Marcel's protection and try to locate you with a spell?"

"I don't think, even if they managed to find me, that they could do much to finish the Harvest ritual as they lack a very important individual thanks to her meddling with the Originals."

At Elena's inquisitive stare, Davina elaborated. "Elijah, as retaliation, killed Agnes. She was the last of the Elders. Conveniently, they are the only ones who can do important rituals and the witches of the Quarter don't have enough time to train someone to be able to replace her."

Elena sighed while she unfolded her arms over each other. It was to a frightening degree how much she understood of Davina's wish of getting away from a place where her own family wanted to use her in a ritual. Though, they could ask Bonnie to investigate this ritual on the Other Side a little better as Silas was currently MIA.

"Okay, I will come and get you when I wake up." Elena sent a small smile as she informed the girl of her decision.

"Yay!" Davina launched herself at Elena, wrapping her arms tightly around the older girl. "Thank you"

They chatted a little more, clarifying plans for the next day, before they said their goodbyes.

Davina woke up a few moments later, back in her room in the attic. For the first time in months, she was hopeful. She wouldn't abandon her plans of getting Elijah and Elena together, but it could be accomplished after they resolved Elena's problems, so she would be able to accompany her back to New Orleans when Davina was no longer in danger of being killed because of the Reaping.

Davina looked over to the digital clock on her nightstand and saw that it was only 5 a.m. She knew that she was too excited to go back to sleep, so instead she got up and tried to decide what to pack to her journey.
