Author's note:Thanks again for positive feedback. While writing this chapter I have a total of 81 reviews! Do you think we can reach 100? I sure hope so. If you haven't reviewed before please do so…even if it is a summary of what you think or your favourite chapter…it gives me an idea of the type of things people want to read!
I am afraid that this is going to come to an end soon. I wanted to end it before I ran out of ideas completely and ruined it. I have had serious writers block and also been extremely busy these past few weeks so I hope it doesn't show too much in this instalment.
This isn't the end for ZoNa fan fics…I still want to run with my next fiction; 'First Impressions'. I am also dabbling with other anime to…like Naruto. I haven't lost the drive yet!
Anyway…Here is my gift to all of you for your patience…
Body Swap
Chapter 13 – The Penultimate Chapter
Nami looked over at the group of older men sitting on the grass up ahead. Amongst them she caught a green haired moron. She grew irritated quickly as she realised he had not heeded her words before and was not taking care of himself. She should have known, he was as stubborn as their captain after all, yet their captain was running around like nothing had happened. Zoro had questioned her earlier that day as to why she bugged him so much when the others were just as guilty of not resting enough. She was not able to answer him at the time. Instead she bit down on her tongue and stormed off.
She knew she should not worry about him. He was an adult and more than capable of taking care of himself. Everyone has the right to make wrong decisions…she just wished it didn't upset her so much. Before being in his body she would probably just let him do as he pleased, but after experiencing the constant ache and spasms his body had to endure on a daily basis, she finally understood that his body was more fragile than he let on. It was possible that she was more sensitive to it and he was accustomed to it, but that just made the reality of the problem that much worse.
She had been trying to watch out for him all day, but at the same time was so angry and irritated by him she had tried to maintain some distance and gain her composure. Yet seeing him sitting there with a bottle of alcohol in his hand made her realise that she was probably wasting her time. He was not going to change and she needed to accept that. She caught his gaze for a moment after Luffy shouted his name. His face appeared to be riddled with guilt and she could tell he expected her to scold him, but she was fed up of always appearing like the nagging wife of the ship. Besides, hadn't he said he wanted to talk to her? If he did then he would have to come to her. She was no longer going to chase him. Deciding to take another tactic, she chose to ignore him instead.
"Looks like you are getting the cold shoulder" Curos jeered as he swallowed more of his drink.
Zoro bit his tongue. He was not sure of what to do, but at the same time had no control over the situation. It was strange as he was not unaccustomed to their navigator barking orders and nagging them, but she seemed to have been on his back a little more lately. He was not sure what he had done which was so wrong but the events over the past few days had made it difficult for him to breech conversation with her. He did not want animosity between them and he definitely didn't want to disappoint her. He had decided earlier on that he would need to approach her in a delicate way and out of range of the eyes and ears of their crew members.
As Zoro was absorbed in his own thoughts and watched Nami silently from a distance a rubber arm wrapped itself around him. "Huh? Lufffyyy!" he shouted as he was snatched from where he sat.
Brook and the others turned to talk to the swordsman but were met with an empty space and a blinking light of where green had been.
Zoro decided he was going to kill his captain as he landed head first into a stunned red head and fell into a fountain in the middle of town. Nami was clearly unimpressed and very angry. So much for trying to approach her carefully, he thought.
"Get off me!" Nami shouted, trying to push him off her.
"I am trying!" he argued as he made an attempt to stand up and slipped.
"Wah!" Nami yelped as he landed on top of her again, his face practically embedded in her cleavage. When Zoro lifted his head up he barely had time to register the flushed expression on her face as a fist met his head. Zoro lifted a hand to rub his injured scalp and moved to one side to let her move. Nami gave him a 'humph' and went to stand up.
"Yo!" Luffy hailed, laughing at their situation. His sudden appearance shocked Nami as he landed on the edge of the fountain. Nami jumped and slipped on the slippery edge, falling backwards. Zoro managed to move and catch her just in time, but the result was him landing back in the water with her rear end in his face.
"Are you guys okay?" Luffy asked with a grin.
"You idiot!" Nami shouted. She pushed off Zoro, causing his head to go under the water, and stood up. She was completely soaked and her hair stuck to her face. She reached out and tried to throttle their captain.
Luffy's face started to go red and he called out for help from his friend.
"Nami give it a rest" Zoro said.
Steam started to come out from all around her and she slowly lowered Luffy and turned her attention back to the man that had landed on her.
"Um Zoro…you should run" Usopp's strained voice could be heard from the side lines, managing to drag Luffy's body to one side. Nami's aura had grown so strong that many people found themselves backing off.
Zoro's instincts kicked in and he knew he was not in her good books. He took a step back as she neared him. Sweat started to pour from his head.
"Nami-san, are you okay my sweet? Please allow me to help you out" it was the first time that Sanji's voice had been a saint for the swordsman.
Nami's temper seemed to fade a little and she turned to Zoro and said, "You owe me new clothes". She then turned and took Sanji's hand, stepping out of the fountain.
Her statement caused him to become irritated and he immediately became defensive, "Why do I have to pay, it wasn't my fault I landed on you!"
"Are you alright Nami-san?" The voice of their archaeologist asked as she approached.
"I am going to get changed" Nami said as she walked past the group, clearly ignoring him. Zoro watched her walk away and felt agitated.
"Zoro, we better change your bandages again" Chopper said as he noticed the man was also soaking wet.
Zoro barely heard the little guy and allowed him to be led away.
"You really are an idiot" Sanji muttered from beside him as Nami's figure disappeared from view.
"What did you say?" Zoro spat, pausing in his tracks.
"You heard me moron!" Sanji snapped back. "You really have no clue about a woman's heart"
"And you do?" Zoro defended himself. Sanji may flirt with women and treat them like a precious treasure, but he was blinded by their looks and never saw the real them. He was not the person Zoro needed to hear this from.
"Nami-san is worrying about your wellbeing too much." Sanji pointed out, ignoring the question thrown at him.
"Your point being?" Zoro asked with venom to his tone.
"Don't make her worry" the blonde man retorted as he lit a cigarette and stormed off to join his new group of fans.
"Tsch" Zoro muttered under his breathe. Like he needed to be told that. It was pretty hard to not make her worry. Throughout their journey they have been exposed to different enemies and it will only get tougher from that moment on. It was not like he wanted to be injured, but it was better than being dead right? Besides, in some ways it helped him to remember that he is not immortal and needs to work on his weak points. Every fight was a learning curve.
Zoro allowed his thoughts to pound him as Chopper led him back towards their rooms. It was only upon entering the building that he realised he had lost his little friend. "Chopper?" he called out, "Where has he gotten to?" he asked himself out loud, denying the fact that he was the one that was lost. Deciding to try and find his friend instead of staying put, he started to work himself down some corridors, trying various doors enroute. A majority of them were locked or led to cupboards, kitchens, wash rooms, etc. Despite meeting some people on the way and asking where the medical room was, he never seemed to find someone who could give him the right directions.
He paused in his tracks as he heard a voice in the distance…is that someone singing? He thought. As he got closer he realised his hunch was right. It was the sound of a woman singing. He could not help be drawn to it. Her voice was soothing and sweet. The song was familiar…he could have sworn he had heard the melody before.
Nami continued to scrub the grime from her hair as she let the warm water flow over her body. There was nothing like a hot shower to cool you down…a little ironic, but true. Yet no matter how hard she tried the image of Zoro in wet clothing with blood soaked bandages bothered her. Trying to force the image out of her head she decided to sing instead. She chose a song her mother used to sing to her and Nojiko when they were smaller. It was an old lullaby and not something she sung regularly. Bellamere told her it was a song she heard her village sing while she was visiting the island….before it got ran sacked by pirate that is.
She rinsed the soap from her hair and reached out for her towel. Tying it around her waist and squeezing out her hair she stepped out of the bath and grabbed a towel for her hair. As she exited the bathroom she was greeted by a familiar husky voice.
"I didn't realise you could sing so well"
Nami spun around to find the swordsman sitting on the floor, his back against the wall next to the bathroom door and his legs crossed in front of him.
"How the hell did you get in here?" she demanded to know.
"You left the door unlocked" he shrugged, scanning her up and down with his good eye.
"What are you doing here?" she asked, walking across him and to her wardrobe where her spare clothes were.
"I was with Chopper but he disappeared on me" he muttered.
"So you were lost then?" she chided. He did not appreciate the grin on her face as she looked down at him. Her smile turned into a frown as she looked at his bandages. She sighed, "You are never going to heal properly if you keep this up. That fountain was not clean, you should take them off before your wound gets infected" She ordered.
Zoro looked down at his waist and then back up at her.
"Don't look and stay put" she barked as she swung the wardrobe door open and started to get changed behind it.
He sighed and avoided looking in the direction of the wardrobe. Movement caught his attention at the other side of the room and he looked towards it, immediately averting his gaze when he realised what he was looking at. The pale back of their navigator as she put a top over her head. He gulped as he remembered how smooth her skin was to touch.
"There" Her voice broke his train of thought, "now let me look at that" she said.
Zoro was a little dazed and wanted to tell her it was ok and he could handle it himself. Yet his voice seemed to leave his throat as a burning pain went through him. His hands went to his side and he glared at the smiling red head that was crouched in front of him.
"You b…." he was about to insult her when a slender finger placed itself on his lips.
"Don't say anything you will be made to regret" she warned, "now for the next one, ready?"
He saw her reach for the next dressing which was stuck to him and closed his eye. He let out a slow breathe and tried to relax his body. This time the mental preparation helped reduce the pain he felt.
"There, all done…see that wasn't too bad" Nami's sweet voice cooed. He could tell she enjoyed that way too much. She stood up and put the messy dressings in a bin. "It looks like the wounds have started to heal, but you need to wash them" and with that she threw a clean towel over his face.
He removed the material and looked up at her with a frown. He stood up and took a step forward, but paused in his movement. Something didn't feel right. His ears started to ring and his vision was spotting. He blinked a few times then pinched the bridge of his nose. He suddenly felt the need to be sick.
"Zoro are you okay?" Nami saw he was shaking and placed a hand on his arm. Her voice and touch seemed distant to him, he tried to turn to look at her but was taken over by darkness.
….
"What happened?" Chopper asked, shocked. He didn't know what bothered him more, the fact that Zoro was in Nami's room or the fact he was passed out, half naked, on her floor.
"He fainted" Nami shrugged, "I was removing his bandages and told him to take a shower to clean his wounds and he collapsed on me"
Chopper turned into his larger form and grabbed Zoro under his arms, sitting him upright and over his shoulder. He rose from his crouched position and laid his unconscious friend on the bed. Zoro instantly started to snore.
"Baka…honestly he makes us all worried and yet he sleeps" Nami muttered from behind them.
"That is Zoro's way of healing himself" the little doctor pointed out as he took Zoro's temperature and pulse rate. He then started work on the mans wounds.
"Will he be okay?" Nami asked.
Chopper nodded, "Yeah he will be fine, but is it ok if he stays here. I don't want to risk moving him again"
Nami nodded, "I guess I have no choice" she replied.
"I will leave some medicine just in case" Chopper took some items out of his bag and put them on the bedside table.
"Thank you Chopper"
The reindeer looked at his friend once more and then left the room, pausing on his way out to tell Nami to lock the door.
"Why?" she asked.
"If Luffy finds out Zoro isn't well he will worry. I don't want any more drama and I don't want him trying to force Sake down Zoro while he is unconscious." He sighed.
Nami smiled as she recollected their time on Thriller Bark and did as he requested.
She looked at the man lying on her bed and sighed. His snoring was loud but at least it was a sign that he was still breathing. She approached the end of the bed and grimaced as she realised he still had his boots on. Grabbing one leg at a time she pulled them off. It was harder to do when it was not your own leg and at one point she almost sent a boot flying across the room. Yet despite how rough she had to be the man behind her continued to dream. She reached up and got a spare sheet out, placing it over him, before dimming the lights and sitting on the arm chair near the bed.
She watched the man as he slept. For how long she did not know. His chest rose and fell and she found it a little mesmerizing.
"You really are an idiot" she whispered, tucking her legs up under her chin and resting her head on her hands. She could feel herself relaxing and beginning to nod off. She shook her head and forced herself to stay awake. It was not until she did this a couple more times that she realised the snoring had stopped. It took a second for it to dawn on her what this meant in her dreamy state but as brown eyes shot open they were met with a small smirk.
"You should sleep if you are tired" he said.
"You are in my bed" she replied. He looked around and seemed a bit surprised him self. It was evident he had forgotten what had happened and why he was there. He went to move to get off her bed but she instinctively reached forward and placed a hand on his chest, forcing him back.
"Wha…" he was about to protest.
"Chopper's orders…and this time you will listen to them" she said with a warning tone. He looked at her and lay back as he was told.
"So where is Chopper?" he asked.
"He left me to take care of you" she replied. Trying to get her self comfortable again. She could feel him starring at her.
"What?" she asked.
"Huh?"
"Why are you looking at me like that?" she demanded an answer.
"Why can't I look at you like this?" he replied teasingly. He liked to wind her up and it was so rare he would get the opportunity to.
"Whatever!" she retorted, turning her head to one side and pointing her nose to the ceiling. Zoro grinned. He watched as she tried to fight back a yawn as it pushed it's way through, but failed miserably.
"You should sleep" he noted.
"I can't" she replied, not looking at him.
"Why not?" he asked.
"Someone has to look out for you in case you pass out again" she snapped, her gaze on him again.
"Oh so that's what happened?" He shrugged.
"Is that all you have to say? No wonder your body is a wreck. It's owner can't even take care of it properly!" she was growing frustrated with him.
"I can take care of myself fine. Besides it's not like you could do any better when you were in control of my body" he retorted. This caused her to become silent suddenly. He was right after all. When in his body she still relied heavily on him.
Zoro regretted what he said the moment he watched her face sadden. He would rather her be angry with him than feel sorrow or regret. He tried to change the topic, "Sing for me"
"What?" Nami was shocked as she looked at him.
He lay on his side and winced, them closed his eye, "You are in charge of looking after me right?"
"Yes but…why?" Nami was unsure as to what it was he wanted. She had sung with her friends plenty of times on deck but didn't think a lot of her own voice. She only ever really sung in the shower. She doubted if Chopper had even heard her on her own.
"It's soothing" he replied with a yawn, he looked at her through half closed eyelids "See it as repayment for stealing from me" he grinned as she shot a glare that could kill his way.
"I paid you back for that!" she argued.
"And this is my interest" he replied. She suddenly went silent.
"You never mentioned anything about interest before" she pointed out his flaw.
"Will you leave a wounded friend to suffer?" he asked, playing her at her own game.
"You are hardly suffering" she stated.
"You haven't had my dreams" he pointed out.
This statement caught Nami by surprise. What did he mean by that? Did he have terror dreams? If he did she had not noticed before. Watching him yawn again and a small tear role down his face she decided that this once she would give into him.
Taking in a deep breathe she started to sing quietly.
…
Nami shot up instantly. Her heart was racing and she was covered in sweat. She placed a hand on her head and tried to control her breathing. The dream she just had was worse than any nightmare she had before. It seemed so real. Too real. She was being chased by something, but she didn't know who or what, just that it was incredibly dangerous. There was a lot of blood. Pools of blood. She tried calling out but no one came. Images shot through her mind. Images of her friends lying there, not moving….she shook her head to try to rid herself of the images. She blinked a few times and rubbed away any sleep that had closed in on her. She looked up at the ceiling and slowly identified that she was in her bed on the island they were currently staying on and had been for the past few days since Dressrosa.
Slowly she recalled the events of the previous night and a certain green haired man's presence. She remembered he was injured. She spun around, hanging her feet out of the bed and checked the space next to her. She was on her own. She scanned the room and realised it was still quite dark, but could make out a pillow and blanket on the floor next to the bed. He must have lifted her into bed and decided to sleep on the floor. Her heart started to pound in her throat. She couldn't understand why but for some reason she needed to see him there and then and just make sure he was okay.
Getting out of bed she ran to the door to check it. It was still locked from the inside, which meant he was still there somewhere. She heard the sound of a toilet flush and spun around.
Zoro exited the bathroom and was taken by surprise as Nami threw herself into his arms. He stumbled backwards and into the wall. She was shaking profusely and hid her face in her hands as she rested herself against his chest.
"Oi Nami, you okay?" he asked, genuinely concerned for her unusual behaviour.
"Just shut up and hold me" she snapped at him. He looked down at her hesitantly, but hearing her sob slightly and take in rapid breaths made him wonder if she had a bad dream or something. He lifted up his arms and slowly placed them around her. At first he held her loosely, but as she buried herself into him he tightened his grip. He was not sure how long he held her for but he gradually felt her relax and she pulled away from him. He immediately felt cold and wished she was back where he could keep her safe.
"Are you going to tell me what that was about?" he asked as she rubbed her eyes.
"I just needed you close" she said matter of factly. He looked at her with a stunned expression. She also seemed surprised by her statement.
"You were worried I was gone?" he finally put two and two together. Nami frowned and turned away, subconsciously grabbing the necklace she wore. When he put it like that it made her sound like an idiot. The movement of Nami's hand did not go un noticed by Zoro. He recalled her telling him why she bought it and suddenly found himself a little hopeful. He was never a man to read the signs of women well. Hell, until recently he had never really paid much attention to women. Being in Nami's body taught him a few things, yet it also helped him to gain a perspective on Kuina's point about being a woman. He knew that the experience changed him slightly. Especially the way he thought about things, but one thing was certain. Even before they changed bodies, he wanted to touch her and hold her close. He reached out on from of him.
Nami froze as arms wrapped themselves around her from behind and he placed his chin on her head. "Nami I am not going anywhere"
They both remained silent and still for what seemed like an eternity. Everything went in slow motion and she slowly turned around in his embrace and looked at his chest. He lifted a hand to her face and stroked her cheek with his thumb. He hated the fact that he had made her worry. Yet she hated seeming so silly and panicking over nothing. Neither of them had been able to think straight since they swapped bodies. That was for sure.
Nami closed her eyes as he stroked her face. She lifted a hand to touch his arm and leant into his touch. He leant down and closed in on her. She opened her eyes and met his gaze. Their foreheads touched each other and their breathing became slower. His hands reached behind her neck and her drew her into him. Closing his good eye as she closed hers he parted his lips ever so slightly and kissed her, pressing them together as tightly as he could. She reached her hands up to cup his own face and returned an equal amount of pressure. They parted for a moment to breathe and closed in a second time. She kissed him and nipped his bottom lip wit her teeth. He could not help but grin as he felt her bite her own lip in response. He could feel her face getting hot under his touch. He moved his hands down her back and pulled her body into his. She felt so smooth and warm under his embrace.
He could feel her hands on his chest and wrapping their way around his neck as she brought a hand up to his head and grabbed onto his hair with a gentle tug as she forced her mouth onto his and gently licked his lips with the tip of her tongue. It sent goose bumps through his body and he couldn't help but let out a small growl.
"Hey NAMI!" The voice of their captain shot through the room as the door was kicked open.
Zoro and Nami squinted at the light shining through and the figure of their captain standing in the doorway. Both of them wanted to dig him a grave right there and then.
"Zoro? What are you doing here?" Their captain did not seem too surprised to see his friend embracing his other friend.
"What do you want Luffy?" Nami demanded, fury burning through her as she parted from the swordsman to crack her knuckles.
"Marines are coming…we have to get out of here!" Luffy ordered, before turning and heading out to get the others.
Nami turned around to see Zoro picking up his swords and strapping them to his waist. She sighed and followed suit, putting on her shoes and collecting some of her belongings.
"You ready?" Zoro asked, waiting for her by the busted door. He reached out a hand and she took hold of it. He pulled her into him for a second and smiled. "We will finish this later" he reassured her.
She looked at him and raised an eyebrow, "Who said there would be a later?" she asked, swaying past him on purpose. He did not see the huge smile that beamed on her face as she headed down the corridor.
….
A/N: Well that could have easily been the end but I decided to give you a little more…after all they have to confess their love. But which one will do it first do you think?
Please keep the comments coming. I look forward to reading them. Please forgive any typos/grammar/spelling issues to. It is late and although I spell checked it, computer's don't pick up on stuff all that well. Especially when a lot of it is names! I am also too tired to check for myself! I may regret it later but oh well. Hopefully you enjoyed it nevertheless.
