A/N: Sorry about the hiatus darlings! It's been a busy couple weeks, but here is the update! Enjoy!
(Also, the reason there are two pov's is that both of these events take place at roughly the same time, so just to clarify!)
Hiccup:
Merida was more or less silent on their walk to their classes. Looking at her, he noticed that she seemed to have something on her mind: a scowl was on her face.
He knew that if he tried to question her about it, she would become more antsy about said thing, and so he thought it polite to keep her as calm as possible.
They had to separate at one of the hall junctions. Hiccup had to head off to history, and Merida had art. Those classes were almost opposite each other in the school, so Hiccup had to take the left turn, while Merida went right.
By the time he walked into the class, the teacher was just starting to take role. He rushed to his usual seat and set himself up for the class.
Packets were passed around. As a packet was lain on his desk, his pocket vibrated. Pulling out his phone, he recognised Merida's name on the notification.
Have you received a text from Jack yet? Or Punzie?
Keeping his phone underneath his desk and using one hand, the other resting on the packet about World Wars in front of him, he did his best to reply without getting caught.
No not yet. It's only been 5-8 minutes since we last saw them, I don't think anything could have possibly gone wrong in that short amount of time. Don't worry so much, Merida.
He skimmed a few lines of the packet before his phone buzzed again.
This is Jack you're talking 'bout Hicc. Something bad always happens when he's the one doing a thing.
Hiccup smiled to himself. Biting his lip in trying to prevent himself from laughing, he replied.
I cannot agree nor deny that accusation Merida, but it does seem that way, huh?
It's just that I'm really worried about Rapunzel. I don't want anything bad to happen to her. She's already weak from being sick. Why didn't she show signs of being sick before?
I don't know… but, I think I remember my dad saying something about that in the mornings, your body tends to lower in body temperature? So I guess it just took a while for the fever to come back? But I wouldn't really know I'm not that much of a brainiac… and we are all worried about her, it's okay to be so, too.
Thanks, Hiccup. Now get back to your class, viking ;)
Hey don't go putting the blame on me Legolas, you're the one who started talking to me, remember? (;
Now it's your fault, b/c I just said to get back to your class, but you clearly want to continue our little talk. ;)
Well… talking is nice. Especially when it's with a schoolmate who is actually able to have an intelligent conversation with.
Ooooooo someone is holding a grudge against someone… who is it, Hiccup?
No one in particular. Just the majority of the student body who has very unintelligent conversations and is generally very unknowledgeable.
So that makes those few people just the two of us, eh?
Two?
Me and Rapunzel.
What about Jack?
What about him.
He wasn't included in your little list.
Oh. Because he isn't very intelligent or knowledgeable.
Hiccup snorted, but quickly bit his tongue to prevent himself from laughing out loud in the middle of class.
If we keep up this conversation I'm going to burst out laughing in the middle of class. Besides I have to do my reading on World War I.
Awww. It's fun talking to you. Besides, if we get into trouble, we get into trouble together. I'll bail you out of detention if needed. ;)
Hiccup couldn't help but feel a little flustered, a cold chill of blush was sent through his body as he hesitated to reply.
Fine. If we do this, we do this together. That is agreed upon, no backing out of it now. Now focus on your work Legolas. (; See you next period.
Hiccup set his phone back into his pocket and focused on the packet in front of him. It was all information that he already knew from books he's read. He really didn't need to read it, but if he thought at all about that conversation, he would immediately start to smile like an idiot. He didn't want to get caught, he'd already gotten into enough trouble as it is with certain teachers because of his group of friends.
Instead he concentrated on the wordy packet handed to him, impatiently waiting for the period to end.
Jack:
He carefully kept a secure arm under Rapunzel's arms as he led her out of the cafeteria and down the hall to the offices. It was a decent way to the offices, so there was a long moment of silence between them. It was broken by Rapuzel.
"I'm sorry, Jack. If I'm keeping you from something, I can get to the office on my own."
Showing his smirk, he chuckled and adjusted his grip on Rapunzel's arm slung over his shoulder.
"No way. I have nothing to do. You know that I don't work on homework or school work during free. Free is my time to sleep and chill during the day, and it's the least I could do to use this time helping you. I mean, I was the one who got you sick and all-"
"Jack, listen to me." Rapunzel stopped, forcing Jack to come to a stop too. Her forest green eyes held his blue ones. She almost glared at him. "It is not your fault. You have to stop blaming yourself. I was the one who did this to myself." Her eyes softened, a light smile coming to her face. "Okay?"
Jack only stared back at her. Her eyes somewhat half-lidded and gentle looking still shouted at him you better agree with me, or you're going to be in a shit ton of trouble. Taking her unsaid word for it, he complied, nodding.
She seemed to accept this, and she led the way again.
There was another moment of silence as they slowly made their way down the hall. Come on, we can speed this up. As he thought this, he felt Rapunzel stumble against him. He couldn't help but notice that her breathing was laboured.
"Alright, Punzie. You obviously cannot walk when you're this sick." Jack stepped away from her.
She started to protest, but he stepped in front of her and kneeled, his back to her. "Get on."
"Jack, what-"
"Punzie, please. Just do this for me. You're really sick, and this is obviously tiring for you. I'll carry you."
After a few seconds, arms wrapped around his neck, and he took hold of her legs which wrapped around his waist as he stood up. Smiling, he knew he won this round.
"Thanks." Her breath tickled his ear, and she adjusted her grasp around his neck.
"No problem. That's what friends are for." Oh god I really hope she didn't notice that pause when I said that.
If she did, she didn't say anything. Instead, she pressed her face up against the side of his neck. It was warm. Unbelievably warm. But it was nice, in a feverish kind of way.
By the time they got to the offices, Rapunzel seemed asleep. Taking a deep sigh, Jack struggled in opening the nurse's door with his foot, his hands preoccupied with holding Rapunzel up, and he pushed his way in. The nurse immediately turned and gasped. Jack froze as the nurse hurriedly made her way over, "No, no, it's not as bad as it looks. She was just tired, she has a fever." He could see the nurse physically relax, and helped her off his back and onto the single cot in the room. "I'm going to call her parents right now." He pulled out his phone and motioned to the door with a finger.
"That would be best. After you do, you better head off to class, Jack." She turned to Rapunzel, pulling out a thermometer.
"I have a free." He opened the door slowly. "And I'd rather stay with her, so that when her mom does come, I can help her get Rapunzel into the car."
"I'll keep you on your word. I'll be in the back if you need me."
"Yes, Ms. Tooth." She promptly disappeared through a door in the back of the room. He had family ties to Ms. Tooth, or Toothiana as she liked to call herself. She was kind, and she loved her job. She was considered family.
Stepping out the door, he quickly dialled Rapunzel's mother.
The conversation was quick and to the point, and immediately after he went back to Rapunzel's side. She was fast asleep. Breathing slow and relaxed. She did, however, look very flushed due to the fever.
Jack waited by her side, occasionally glancing at the time and his phone, as well as tracing his fingers down her wrist and hands in boredom.
He was just starting to fall asleep himself next to Rapunzel when the door opened. In stepped Rapunzel's mother, obviously worried due to the lack of proper care to her hair, which appeared to be hastily done rather than her usual neat style.
"Is my daughter okay?" She quickly walked up to the two, kneeling down as Jack was and placing a worried motherly hand on Rapunzel's forehead.
"She's fine, for the most part. We kinda forced her into doing this; going home. She vehemently refused, but in the end I took her kicking and screaming." He kinda stressed the lie, but it wasn't all a lie he supposed. She would have stayed here if she could if he didn't interfere. Besides, it's what she would have done if she wasn't so completely out of it due to her fever.
"That sounds like her. I don't want to have to wake her up… Can you help me get her to the car?"
"Sure thing. I can carry her on my back, if you need to." Jack started to stand up, stretching sore leg muscles.
"That would be great, thanks Jack." She also stood up, helping to get Rapunzel into a sitting up position.
"No problem, Ms. Primrose." They both managed to get Rapunzel onto Jack's back, and together they headed towards the parking lot: Jack doing the carrying while Rapunzel's mother opened doors along the way.
Reaching her Mercedes, Ms. Primrose opened the passenger door. Jack adjusted his hold on Rapunzel, doing a lot of balancing and sliding around until Rapunzel was in his arms. Straining, he placed Rapunzel in the seat. They make it look a hell of a lot easier in the movies than in real life.
"Thank you, Jack." Ms. Primrose looked at him from the driver's seat.
"No problem. Anything to make sure she's alright." Rapunzel stirred, but she didn't wake up as he finished talking.
"You know, Jack, Rapunzel is fond of her friends," She looked over to her daughter then back at him. "but I can tell she is very fond of you." Jack felt a blush go to his face. Her mother flashed an almost wicked, knowing, smile. "I'm glad, though. You are a very kind boy, and I have heard many stories about you looking after your own."
Jack could only nervously rub the back of his neck as she thanked him one last time, before he closed the door and she drove off, leaving him at the gates to hell, metaphorically, of course.
He stood there for a minute, letting his thoughts run astray. So even her mother knows about her crush on me? I didn't think she actually told her parents. I just hope to god I'm not educated on safe sex by her. The thought of that situation caused his current blush to intensify. Groaning in embarrassment, he bit his lip in an effort to stop thinking. Stop thinking in general. No more thoughts. Zip. Nada.
With as much of a blank mind he could make, he walked back into hell in a haze.
