A little bit later Steve and Mia were still content in each other arms. Blue was now over by his water bowl getting a drink. Mia looked up at Steve before getting up to take Blue out to go to the bathroom. Steve sighed and kissed forehead again before following suit. He was one that caught Blue after he ran through Mia's legs. It was easy to see that Blue thought it was game. They got leach on Blue.
On the way down, Pepper met them in the elevator. She looked at Steve then at Mia. Her eyes then landed on Blue. He ran over and started paw her legs. She was in state of shock. It was last thing she thought she would see. Steve told her that he was getting her large gift she did not think it would be a dog. Pepper's eyes locked with the blue eyes of Blue. He had his little tongue out. He was an adorable sight. Pepper scratch Blue's behind his ears she let off a little sigh as gave Blue had content look.
"Wait till Tony sees him"
"He will love him I know he will. I mean look at his little face who could not love him." Mia said
Pepper smiled at Mia; she had not seen Mia this excited in many years. Steve hand rested on Mia's small of her back. She smiled up at him with room brightening smile. Pepper looked over to Steve and thought of Peggy being at the party.
"Steve can I have a word with you?" Pepper asked.
Steve looked to Mia when the elevator stopped on the ground floor. Then he looked back to Pepper. Mia looked up at him and touched his cheek.
"Talk to her I will be fine" Mia said softly
"You're sure" Steve asked.
He ran his hand down her arms. She smiled at him before, lean up and kissed his cheek.
"Positive"
Mia walked out of elevator with Blue on her heels. Steve just watched as she walked away. Pepper and Steve stepped into the lobby. His eyes traveled to Mia everyone once in a while
"Yes?"
"Umm… Steve I wanted to tell you this." Pepper started.
She rubbed the back of her neck. Before, shaking her head bring her eyes back to Steve's. He was looking at her fully now.
"What is Pepper?"
"I wanted to warn you. You see Tony invited someone. That I not sure you will be ready to see"
"Who?" Steve asked questioningly.
He tilted his head then turned looked at the door. Before, returning his eyes to Pepper's. She shifted uneasily. It was not in her nature to do so Steve knew that much from his time staying at Stark Tower.
"Tony invited Mia's godmother." Pepper finally blurted out.
"So what does have to do with me?" Steve asked confused.
Steve started to head for the door. It was all confusing to him; why would Pepper worry about him. He was nearly to the door when Pepper grabbed his arm. Steve turned and looked at her.
"Steve! Mia's godmother is Peggy"
Steve just stood there shocked. So many thoughts were racing through his head. His blue eyes went wide as it process through his mind. His eyes traveled to the door where Mia recently left from. Pepper placed her hand on his shoulder. He looked up at her. She had concern in her eyes.
"You're alright?"
"Yeah… fine"
"You are sure?"
"In a bit of shock that is all."
Pepper nodded before walked off leaving Steve with his thoughts. He mind was still trying to process what he would face in about a half hour. Every then that played out in his head was uncomfortable.
Ten minutes later Mia walked back into the door with Blue; who was carrying stick twice the size of him. Steve switched into to a form of Captain Mode. He was going to give her the birthday party without drama if it killed him. Peggy and his relationship was one that never truly came full circle. There was an exchange of glances and flirting but other than kiss and the talk of the date when he was nearly facing death. He could do this; he was sure that Peggy would do the same after all Mia was her god-daughter. She would want Mia to be happy right. She looked over to Steve; walking over to him placing her hand on his chest. That brought his eyes to her eyes. There was clear worried look in her eyes. He leaned down and kissed her forehead.
"Steve what's wrong?"
"It's fine"
She looked at him unsure if he was being honest with her; she was about to say something else when Blue dropped the stick by Steve feet. Steve smiled down at Blue and picked up the stick. She watched Blue and Steve play tug a war. She smiled at the pair of them.
Steve wrapped his arm her and lead them back to the elevator. They pushed the button for her floor. She looked back at him with worried look on her face. She was still trying to figure out what he was hiding from her.
The elevator did not stop on her floor. She and Steve exchanged glances with each other. Blue was weaving out of Mia's and Steve legs. Mia reached down and untangled her legs and picked up Blue.
The elevator stopped on floor near the penthouse. The elevator doors opened to reveal large group of people. The room was decorated in all her favorite colors. There waiters walking around with trays of food all of her favorites. Mia's eyes traveled to her godmother Peggy. She bit her lip and a squeezed his hand. That brought his eyes to hers. He smiled at her when she gave him an understanding look.
"Happy Birthday" They all yelled.
Tony pushed his way to the front of the crowd. His eyes went wide at the sight of the puppy in his sister arms. He was in state of shock as he walked over to the pair. Blue tried to get out Mia's arm.
"You got her a dog?" Tony asked loudly directly to Steve.
"His name is Blue, Tony isn't he adorable." Mia said with huge smile.
Tony was about to blow his top. He locked eyes with Mia. He could not do this to her now. He would have done anything to make her happy. He placed on hand on Blue head and scratched him behind the ears. Blue tried to chew on Tony arm before licking his fingers. He could not help but laugh at puppy antics. Tony looked at Steve.
"We will talk later."
Steve nodded his head. Tony waved his hand the music started. It was one Mia's favorite Aerosmith song. Steve and Mia walked farther in the room. Natasha and Pepper came over the pair.
Ten minutes into the party Mia had tried a lot of the food but had yet to go the dance floor. That was when Rhodes walked over to Mia was still hold Steve arm.
"Steve I don't believe you met a very close friend of the family. Steve this is Colonel James Rhodes. James, this is Captain Steven Rogers; My boyfriend." Mia said the last part very shyly.
Rhodes and Steve look at each other. They shook hands. Blue barked at Rhodes. Mia shifted nervously. Rhodes placed his hand down to let Blue sniff his hand. Blue licked his hand. Rhodes looked up at Mia with smile.
"Mia may I have this dance."
Mia looked at Steve unsure about what to say. He could see she wanted to very badly. Steve brought her hand to his mouth and kissed it before nodded his head. She mouthed "you sure".
"Go I'll watch Blue" Steve said.
Mia smiled up at him and kissed his cheek before she linked arms with Rhodes and lead her to the dance floor. They started to dance as Elvis Presley's Jailhouse Rock started to play. He was spinning her and she was laughing as the swayed beat of the song. They were both singing along with the song.
Steve watched them like he was in trace watching her in arms of another man. Blue was at his ankles watching his mistress as she dance. Steve did not notice someone walking over to him. A familiar hand on his shoulder woke him from his trance as watched Mia dance.
"You love her." Peggy said.
