Chapter 6

"You're going to have to report her presence sooner or later, your Majesty." The Doctor reminded him from across the desk in the Goblin Kings study.

"I don't need to be nagged Ashe, I just need to know Sarah is now completely well." Jareth responded juggling a crystal between his hands absent-mindedly. "I was waiting until she was better."

"Delaying the inevitable, Sire?"

Jareth pinned the doctor with a harsh glare. "I'm not sending her back."

The glare didn't deter Ashe from speaking his mind. "But you never got permission to take her did you?"

"I had permission to keep her 3 years ago." He let the crystal vanish to focus all his attention of the other man.

"If she agreed to stay, she didn't."

"I'm aware of that." He was also aware of his anger building

"She still hasn't, I would suggest getting her agreement to stay now."

"Don't state the obvious Ashe unless you want me to relocate you to the Bog!"

"Yes Sire."

"It's been a month and you still haven't managed to confirm she's even there! What am I paying you for? Incompetence?" He stormed into the meeting with his minion.

"Master it's not my fault. Goblins are so feeble minded they can't be bribed and I haven't been able to get close enough myself. Why don't you report it to the council? The Goblin King will be forced to show his hand."

"But I won't be able to get at her!"

"Master you will not be able to get at her if she is in the Goblin Kingdom at least you can plan if it is confirmed. Perhaps she will be sent home and we can take her then."

"Idiot if she goes in front of the council they might be able to see what she is." He kicked out at the creature.

"Sawah." There was a tug on her skirt and the small voice kept repeating "Sawah."

Sarah had been sitting down to her breakfast but she picked the little girl up in response, "Hello Iona. How are you this morning."

The response was a stream of very excited but completely unintelligible baby speak. And more tugs on he dress, the bodice this time. She'd been provided with a wardrobe full of old fashioned dresses like the ones she'd worn as a child playing dress up.

"Ohhh that sounds good, and what do you plan to do today?" She asked picking up a slice of toast.

There was another stream of chatter.

"That should be fun."

"Please don't tell me you actually understood any of that." Jareth asked from behind her she didn't jump as she'd smelled him coming as usual. If he'd walked into the room a wild magic scent followed even though he moved as silently as a cat.

"No but it encourages her to talk and eventually they start to add actually words. Don't you darling?" Iona responded by putting her arms out for Jareth.

"Do you want me to take her so you can finish eating?" He walked over to do so anyway.

"Sure."

"I need to ask you something, Precious."

She looked up at the Goblin Monarch, Iona settled in his arms, her little hands tangling in his wild mane of hair, looked like fun to Sarah.

"I need to know that you want to stay here that you don't want to go back."

"You know I want to stay with the children."

"So you are agreeing to stay here with me?"

"Yes, I'm agreeing to stay here with you."

"Thank you." He let Iona down and she tottered back towards the nursery, where Toby was safely causing chaos.

"Why did you need to ask you know I'd do anything?"

"Children have no problem adjusting to the magic down here, They absorb it as they grow, becoming fae. Adults don't absorb it so they are not automatically allowed to stay in the Underground. You weren't wished away and you didn't ask to be brought down here."

"Are you going to get in trouble? Are they going to send me away?" Sarah rose from the table, her appetite having fled.

"No Sarah, I'm not going to let that happen but I will have to go in front of the council, and my Father to state my case."

"Who's your father?"

"Oberon High King of the Fae. Ruler of the Children of Danu."

"Oberon? Husband of Titania?"

"My Mother."

"Is their relationship as bad as William Shakespeare penned?"

"Worse."

"I'm sorry for causing you trouble."

"I couldn't let you die, it was my choice to bring you back."

Jareth took the option to be proactive and see the High King before going to the council. Getting a private audience was easier than usual and he was shown right into his Fathers Audience chamber.

"Father." He said in greeting to the man sitting on the throne. The Fae, once they reached adulthood could appear any age they wanted. Oberon had chosen to look older than most. Thick white hair covered his head and he had a close cropped beard. But the illusion of age didn't extend to his Fathers piercing blue eyes.

"Jareth." Was the equally terse response.

It was obviously going to be one of those discussions. "How's Mother?"

"I think you might just want to skip to the reason for your visit."

"Not that long ago I responded to a summons from above, two children were wished into my personal care, a girl and a boy."

"And?" said with an eyebrow lift, his default 'how annoyed do I need to be with you?' expression.

"I brought their sister with me."

Both eyebrows lowered, translation 'very annoyed.' "You brought an unwished child underground?"

"An adult, she was dying, the wish was meant to be her last act but I couldn't let her just go."

That almost brought Oberon out of his seat. "You brought an adult human underground with out permission?"

"I had permission three years ago."

"And we all know how that turned out. You've found another to replace her?"

"No it was Sarah who called out to me."

"Sarah Williams has returned to the Underground?" That did bring him out of his seat.

"Yes and she has agreed to stay."

The High King looked more troubled than angry that piece of information, "It will not be that simple, she will not absorb magic and become fae as an adult."

"But she is going stay Underground never the less."

"That is up to the council, Jareth."

"I had permission three years ago and there was no expiration date on that."

"She wasn't meant to leave Jareth!"

"Funnily enough that wasn't mentioned anywhere in the document." He pointed out, determined not to lose his temper in his Fathers presence.

"You know the Laws. you cannot marry a human." He settled back into his throne.

"That doesn't matter."

"Maybe if you tell yourself that often enough it might be true. And what will happen to the children?"

"She gave them to me personally, I suppose we'll raise them together."
