Chapter XVII: Makeover

"Lord I wish that I could say I could see a single way
That we could take it back to where it used to be
Before the daylight broke to pieces everything I used to make believe"

"Okay, now you can open your eyes!" Izzie warbled gleefully and waited for April's response.

"You took me to the Pacific Place mall?" April asked disbelieving and turned to Izzie who sat in the driver's seat.

"Don't be too enthusiastic, Apes," The OB/Gyn surgeon replied a little disappointed.

April sighed and looked back at her friend finally responding:

"Okay, fine, do whatever you want with me."

Izzie clapped happily and got out of the car, April followed her. She locked the door and walked next to her, slipping her arm under her friend's.

"You know what I always did when I got boyfriend problems? I got a new haircut or new clothes, I guess that should be good for you, too."

April automatically caressed her hair, she loved how it looked and she didn't want to change it.

"Izzie, I love my hair color and haircut. But new clothes sounds good."

The blonde surgeon smiles brightly at her, she loved makeovers. When she was a little girl, she often did the hair of her long-haired dog Millie. She later died because a caravan "accidently" knocked her down.

"Great, I have so many ideas of how we could give you a makeover. What do you think about black?"

"Since it reflects my current emotions, I'll give it a shot. D' you already have somethin' in mind?"

"What do you think about lingerie? As soon as Jackson's awake, you can give him a lap dance in your new underwear from Victoria's Secret. Christina did this once for Burke, but she got caught by his mother," Izzie burst into laughter about the Christina part, and didn't noticed the hurt expression that shortly flashed over April's face. But she tried to take it with humor so she answered:

"I guess, if I'd do a lap dance for Jackson, he would be rather turned off than turned on. The lingerie wouldn't help, Izzie."

"Rubbish! First we're gonna buy you some hot clothes, fine?"

April sighed nodding and entered the mall with her friend.

April looked at herself in the mirror in the changing stall. She wore dangerous tight black jeans, which, according to Izzie, flattered her bum (Your ass is literally screaming "Look at me! I look gorgeous in those jeans!"). Under her black biker jacket, she wore a bordeaux-red top, which emphasized her cleavage (God damn it, you're boobs look amazing in this top, I don't even want to think about how they'll look with your new Victoria's Secret bra!"). The trauma surgeon removed slowly the curtain of the changing stall and walked up to Izzie and the shop assistant, who could have been a copy of Stanley Tucci in "Burlesque". He put his glasses up to his nose and noticed happily:

"You look like a Shadowhunter! Your new look also makes your pale skin and red hair shine, darling!"

April ignored the fact that she had no idea what a Shadowhunter was, but looked to Izzie who seemed to be very proud.

"Gorgeous! It looks amazing on you, you should really buy it!"

The red haired checked once more her new style in the mirror and finally said:

"Fine, let's go to the cash deck."

When they arrived at Victoria's Secret shop, she stopped in front of the window and looked at a poster of a blonde women posing in lace underwear. She pinched the bridge of her nose, swearing:

"Libby, are you kidding me?"

"Libby? Who's Libby?" Izzie inquired confused and looked around.

"You know the Victoria's Secret model Olivia Haynes?"

"Umm, yeah, isn't it the women over there?" Izzie replied and pointed at the poster in the window.

"Yeah, she's my sister." April answered slightly smiling. Libby's actual name was Olivia, and when she was little, she always left out the "O" and said a b instead of the v, calling herself "libia". Later, her parents decided to call her Libby to make easier for the oldest Kepner girl.

"No way!" The surgeon from Chehalis blurted out and compared April with the women on the poster. Libby had the same eyes and mouth, actually her whole face looked similar to April's, the only difference was that she was blonde and taller.

"She used mom's maiden name and moved to New York to become a model. Libby's the one who I get along the best, then there's Alice...and well, Kimmie. Kimmie has a...special point of view on some topics and she's worse than me when it comes to Jesus, trust me. She's currently living in a convent in Kentucky. Alice's a teacher in the same high school as mom."

"Lemme guess, Kimmie's not on good terms with Libby, 'cause she's a underwear model?"

"You have no idea! Kimmie's not talking to Libby anymore, because of this. I told you, she has a special, mostly crazy point of view."

Izzie snorted and said:

"I'm sometimes genuinely happy that I don't have siblings. But anyway, let's go and buy you some hot underwear, April!"

April hadn't felt comfortable buying underwear, she wasn't so happy about how her body looked like, even though Izzie had complimented her the whole time. They sat on a bench in the mall and looked at the people passing by.

"How much time they have to go through malls...Hey look, there's a pretzel shop, should I buy one for you, too?"

April started up and nodded at Izzie. While they sat there, she had been constantly thinking about Jackson. How he was doing, how much she wanted to be at his bed right now. She wanted to leave this mall as soon as possible, but she didn't wanted to hurt Izzie, she tried her best to distract her, which was really cute from her.

Izzie's phone vibrated and April discovered a photo of her and her husband. April felt a growing lump in her throat, because of the way Izzie looked at him. Just when you concentrated on her gaze, you saw her emotions - deep love. Because the phone didn't stop vibrating, she finally picked it up, even though she didn't know what would do this to her.

"Yeah? Here's April Kepner, Izzie's not here at the moment."

"Kepner?" She heard Alex asking.

"Yeah, what's up?"

"Could you give me Izzie?"

"She'll be here in five, 'cause there's a long queue in front of the pretzel shop, so can you tell me instead?"

"Listen...," Alex said and April knew he was pinching the bridge of his nose,

"What is, Alex?" April asked sharply...was something wrong with Jackson?

"Listen, Jackson had a stroke-"

"He had a WHAT?" The trauma surgeon nearly screamed high-pitched. No, no, no, this couldn't happen...not again.

"April calm down, everything's fine, he's fine. They didn't need to operate on him, they were able to diagnose the stroke soon enough, thank his sister."

"Why didn't they give him medicine against thrombosis development? But, I'll be there as soon as I can, okay?"

April answered fast and hung up. She sprinted to Izzie and grabbed her arm to drag her to the car.

"April, what the hell?"

"Jackson's got a stroke, I need to get to the hospital!"

"But your bags!" Izzie reminded her and ran off to take them.

April ran through the mall like she was haunted by a monster. When she arrived at the car, she pulled on the car handle, but since Izzie had the keys, it had to wait until she was there.

"Calm down, April. Now tell me what happened," Izzie demanded as she started the car.

"I...I don't remember it quiet well, I just...I just remember Alex calling me and that he said that he wanted to talk to you first," April answered quiet while tears came up in her eyes.

How in the name of god, did he let that happen? Why? Jackson wasn't a bad guy, he didn't deserved this. April clenched the seat, just to prevent her from totally freaking out.

"Why didn't you give me the phone?...You know what, just call Alex and turn on loudspeaker."

April nodded and a few seconds later they had Alex on the line.

"Is it you Izzie?"

"Yeah, this time it's me. Tell me what happened."

"Avery had a stroke, but his sister noticed it soon enough so there's no damage. But he's doing better."

"Is...is he awake?"

April could hardly speak through all her tears, but this time they were tears of relief. At least he was doing better.

"No, he's still in coma. He's doing better, don't forget this, okay?"

Alex wasn't the type who was good at comforting other people, but since it was the girl of his best friend...he tried his best. He tried to make an effort.

"Why didn't they give him medicine against thrombosis development?"

"Kepner asked the same. They gave him the wrong doses."

"They didn't! But anyway, see you later. Bye!"

Izzie hung up and looked worried at April who was still crying.

"You heard Alex, he's doing better, okay? Hold on to that."

April walked down the familiar hallway to Jackson's room and found Catherine standing with a newspaper in her hand in front of it.

"Hey, he's doing all right. You read the newspaper today?"

April shook her head, she hadn't had the time that morning, because Izzie and she had left the apartment just after she had come out of the bathroom.

"Read the article on the third page, just the last part."

The trauma surgeon nodded and turned to page three to see a big photo of the messy and devastated ground in front of the space needle. She looked down and saw the part, which Catherine had talked about:

The terror continued at the Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, which had suffered from a shooting just loosely four years ago. One of the assassins were brought to the hospital because of a major trauma, where he was treated by Dr. April Kepner and Dr. Jackson Avery. On the way to an emergency surgery they were surprised by the brother with a gun. Dr. April Kepner tried to reanimate the assassin, Yasha A., but it was too late. During a following debate, Yusuf A., the younger brother, revealed that they were responsible for the terror attack. Afterwards Dr. Avery got shot into the chest to protect Dr. Kepner and was brought to an OR, where Dr. Christina Yang, cardiothoracic attending, and Dr. Owen Hunt, chief of trauma surgery and chief of surgery, were able to save him. After the surgery, Dr. Hunt kindly informed us, that Dr. Avery was still in a critical condition, but on the road to recovery.

April tried to swallowed her tears down as she tried to thank Catherine for the article with this unpleasant feeling in her throat. The elder Avery women hugged her and told her again that Jackson was a fighter.

"Where's Cora?" April asked after she had discovered the empty chair next to Jackson.

"She went to her hotel, she needed sleep. You should do the same, my dear."

"No...I stay here, really, I want to, but thank you, Dr. Avery."

"Oh dear, call me Catherine. That's due," She ordered with a smile and left.

April entered the room and sat down on the chair next to his bed. Now all her tears rolled down her cheek and she didn't care. Jackson wasn't so pale as this morning which made her happy. But she had one thing to think about the whole time...Why wasn't she traumatized? Why hadn't the same happened to her as it had happened to Christina? Because she was more concerned about Jackson than about her and didn't that happen when you were madly in love with someone?

The trauma surgeon exhaled and chocked because of her tears and put her cell out and dialed a number while she soothingly rubbed circles with her thumb on Jackson's back of his hand.

"Libby? Yeah, hi, here's April..."
