Nico sat down at the conference table for the staff meeting, hoping he'd sit next to Dani. It was always fun to watch her reactions to the things going on. He knew she had some sort of romantic thing with the Matt-looking guy (he knew a lot more about him, including his name, but he didn't feel like dignifying the man by treating him seriously), but it looked like it had run its course.
He chose not to think about it. He chose very hard not to think about it. After all, he knew that Dr. Dani probably had no idea what to make of him, or even the state of their friendship. Knowing her, that was an inevitable discussion that he was dreading. Therapists talked too much about feelings and intentions for his taste right now. Why couldn't I have fallen in love with a mime? That thought made him laugh, despite himself. He stopped smiling, though, when he saw Matt Lite sitting next to Dani at the staff meeting and saw them smiling at each other. He stared her down, almost out of reflex, but he was feeling sick to his stomach.
During the FBI raid, he tried to calm her down, but he revealed too much, and she latched on to that immediately. God, she was dangerous. Then Matt Lite - Sam - came over to see if she was OK and he was reminded that his role in Dani's life was not to comfort her. He didn't have a role in her life, and it looked like this idiot did. This was going to be torture, and he wasn't a masochist. He didn't blame her for not choosing him this time - she didn't even know he was a choice. How could she? Since she had come to V3, he had been cold, cruel, evasive, then suddenly heartfelt when dealing with her. She clearly didn't know what to make of him, except that she had her guard up around him in a way that pained him whenever he encountered it. He'd lost her, if he ever had her.
He gave the FBI four weeks to wrap up the case. Then he was gone - either to Dallas or to somewhere off the grid. When his contact threatened Dr. Santino, he didn't blink. He'd make sure that nothing happened to her, but the threat did not mean the same thing it would have before.
