On the heels of their kisses, he told her about the FBI investigation. She took it fairly well, although clearly it was a lot for her to process. He made a point of mentioning that he had told the FBI that once the investigation was resolved, he still had the Dallas job waiting for him, and that he just needed to finish what he'd started in New York, "whatever that was." For some reason, this seemed like a good time for them to kiss (really, any point would have been a good time for them to kiss), and they both leaned in, but she pulled away at the last moment. He was afraid she still didn't trust him, but she quickly clarified that while all of this drama was going down, she wanted to keep them simple. "Keep us simple," she said, with a slight blush. Us. He understood that, but it didn't feel great.

It felt a little better when he saw how she had to make a visible effort to switch out of romance mode and into professional problem-solver mode. She wasn't dismissing, she was postponing.

He left reluctantly, although if he was going to keep things simple, he needed to go then. She asked how she should act at the Death Star, and he told her to act the way she normally would. It wasn't until he was driving home that he realized that considering that she wasn't used to hiding her strong emotions, meaning that it was unlikely she'd be able to operate at V3 for very long without somehow tipping her hand about the investigation. When he saw her later at the office, he realized she might not be able to operate very long at V3 without tipping her hand about them, considering the way her face lit up when she saw him waiting for her at the elevator.

He enjoyed working with her to find Crabchek. It was nice to let her see a little of how he worked, that it wasn't always via mysterious connections. Still, this needed to get wrapped up quickly. He was putting the FBI off about Crabchek to give Dani a chance to help Hutch, and that was dangerous.

He found himself at her house again to discuss Paloma being fired. She really worried when things happened to the people she cared about, and apparently that included Paloma. She also seemed dejected about not having handled the Crabchek situation correctly, and he had the suspicion that now she was a little worried about Crabchek, too. She really was amazing that way. He reminded her that she acted according to her conscience. Then he took a deep breath (in his head), and continued. "That's what I love about you. You never give up the good fight." The L-word. That got her attention. She blushed and looked down, but she didn't shy away from what he said. Instead she asked about Dallas, looking concerned and worried when he told her that Dallas was still the plan. Again, she didn't back away. She slid across the stairs to get closer to him, and smiling, said, "I'd miss you." He knew he needed to say the next part, because it would make him crazy later if he didn't. He pointed out that the last time, she had told him that the team would miss him. He waited for her response. She blushed, saying that Matt was still in the picture then, and that it wouldn't be fair under the circumstances to let him know she also had feelings for him. That was good to hear. He hadn't misread the situation back then - she did have feelings for him, but considering her existing relationship she did the honorable thing and didn't string him along. "And now it's fair?" he heard himself saying. She smiled playfully and blushed a little bit. He really couldn't have asked for a better outcome to his questions.

And then there was a knock at the door. Of course there was. He didn't care who it was - Dani was going to have to send this person away. And then, of course, it was Crabchek. Their conversation would have to continue later.
