Kelly was beginning to worry about KJ. Ever since he had returned home, she had become increasingly attached to him, never letting him out of sight. It was Sunday now, so Kelly had been home for a little over a week. Matt had let her stay home from school so that she could spend some much needed time with Kelly, but with the amount of schoolwork she got on a daily basis, he decided it was time for her to go back. The only thing was, they hadn't told her yet.
However, that wasn't the only thing the guys hadn't told KJ yet. Kelly wasn't completely done serving. He only had a four-month leave. He was definitely not looking forward to breaking the news to her.

In the middle of his first shift back as lieutenant (temporarily of course), Kelly was sitting on the couch, KJ's head resting in his lap. They were watching postseason baseball together, with KJ rooting for her Giants, and Kelly having no one to root for since his Cubbies had done even worse than the year before, if that was even possible. Kelly looked down at KJ, hating it, but knowing that he had to come out with the news sooner rather than later, in order to prevent an even bigger reaction from her.
As the side was retired, Huddy ending the inning with a strikeout, Kelly finally manned up.
"Hey, Junior," Kelly said into his lap.
"Yeah?" she responded, mind still focused on the TV.
"I need to talk to you about something serious." He paused. "About me serving in Afghanistan."
As soon as she heard those words, KJ closed her eyes in fear of what was to come next. Nobody had brought up the dreaded subject around KJ ever since Kelly had returned home. Deep in her mind, she knew that Kelly wouldn't be allowed to serve just one tour. However, on the outside, she was in denial that it would ever become a reality.
"What about it?" KJ asked, tears already pooling up, threatening to spill out from behind her closed eyelids.
Kelly took a deep breath before continuing. "I have to go back in three months. I wish I could change it babe, I really do. But I can't." Kelly braced himself for what he assumed would be a huge explosion of hurt and anger. That being, he was extremely surprised when he felt KJ's arms tighten around him, a small I 'I know' escaping from her lips in between her silent sobs. Kelly just pulled her closer, taking in her scent, and enjoying every small moment he would get with her before he would have to depart once again.
Once KJ's tears had subsided, Kelly pressed a kiss to her forehead and added, "Oh, and your brother said you have to go to school tomorrow," he said with a playful smile on his face. KJ just groaned with dislike in response.
Casey, Shay, Dawson, Mills, and the rest of the firefighters watched the scene unfold in front of their eyes, not wanting their lieutenant to leave again either.

As soon as KJ left for school with Jake the next morning, Kelly saw his chance to do something that had been on his mind for a while.
He walked into District 21, clad in jeans and a leather jacket. He immediately walked to Platt, saying, "Hey. I'm Kelly Severide, a firefighter from 51. Do you know where I could find Detective Erin Lindsay?"
Sergeant Platt slowly got up from her seat and guided Severide up to the Intelligence Unit. He immediately locked eyes with Erin, who was talking with some guy who appeared to be her partner. She motioned for him to come over to where they were currently standing.
"Detective Jay Halstead," said the guy standing next to Erin, extending his hand out.
"Lieutenant Kelly Severide," replied Kelly, shaking Jay's hand in return.
"Nice meeting you, Lieutenant," said Halstead. He then turned to Erin explaining that he was going to go retrieve some information from Jin, their techie.
Once Jay had turned the corner, Erin focused her attention on Kelly. "So, it's been a while, Lieutenant," both of them remembering the night that she had warned him about Keeler, and both knowing the horrible results of that same night. "What brings you here today?"
"Yeah, um, long time no see, Erin. Uh, I was just wondering," Kelly said, scratching his head before continuing. "I mean, I know that it's been a while and everything, but would you happen to have any info on Keeler and his men since the escape?"
After Kelly's return, Casey had sat him down for a long talk regarding what had happened to KJ. Saying that Kelly was enraged would be a complete understatement. Casey had to try and calm him down before he would throw his fist through a wall. When Casey told him that they couldn't find Keeler even with the information from KJ, Kelly made it his mission to never let the dirtbag touch anyone ever again, especially KJ, meaning he would do whatever it was going to take.
Erin looked up at Kelly with sad eyes, knowing it had been a rough year for him. "No, I'm sorry Kelly, we don't. I mean, we've got our eyes and ears open for any chatter about Keeler and we have some CI's on the lookout, but other than that, there's not much else we can do," Erin regretfully finished.
"What do you mean there's nothing else you can do?" Kelly retorted angrily. "That's complete bullshit! You guys have given up on finding Keeler just because KJ's safe now! Yeah? Well let me tell you something!" Kelly screamed pointedly. "KJ will never be safe, not until that son of a bitch is dead or sentenced to life in prison!" Kelly took a few deep breaths, due to a lack of flowing oxygen from his little rant.
"Listen to me Kelly," Erin said softly but sternly. "We're doing everything we can, but odds are, Keeler's probably not even in Chicago anymore. He was probably scared that KJ would leak their location after he realized that she escaped. Alright? There's nothing more to do."
Kelly stared at Erin with misty eyes full of doubt, not wanting to accept that she was probably right. "I know," Kelly said with a slight crack in his voice. "It's just, he hurt her so much, Erin. And I feel so helpless when she wakes up crying from nightmares or when she flinches when I go to touch her. You don't understand, Erin." By this point, tears were rolling down Kelly's face as he spoke in a shaky voice. "Not only did he break KJ, he broke me too. His actions broke me to the point where I made a rash, completely unreasonable and life-changing decision that affected not only me, but my family as well. Now, when I go back to Afghanistan in three months, it'll just be another reminder of what he did to the girl I love like a sister. I just don't know how I can continue living my life, knowing that he's still out there, that he has the potential to further harm my family, the family that I'm supposed to protect."
Erin didn't know what else to say to comfort the Lieutenant, instead pulling him in for a hug, his warm tears seeping through her thin shirt as she let him cry on her shoulder.
A/N: I know there wasn't a lot of KJ in this chapter but I really just wanted to complete the whole Keeler arc. Thanks and don't forget to review!
