Chapter 20:
UNKNOWN P.O.V
She wasn't used to hiding in the shadows, like James she'd preferred the straightforward approach and the fun and games that came with playing with someone's mind. Unfortunately circumstances had forced her to hide in the shadows. Who would have thought that the baseball game would have resulted in the death of James? Her beloved James, oh how she missed him.
That stupid human, she never understood a vampires obsession with them, they were good to drain but not much else. Part of her blamed James' obsession with the hunt, perhaps had he not been so determined to win, he'd still be alive. Well she was seeking revenge against Edward for taking her mate away. At first she hoped to send to end the life of that miserable Bella but then she'd been so protected by the clan. Now though Bella was no longer the light in Edward's life.
She'd thought it quite amusing that Edward had so easily tossed Bella side, especially after proclaiming how much he loved her. However, it had been incredibly more hilarious when Bella had sought her out and demanded that she made her a vampire. Of course being that Bella was no longer important to Edward, she didn't want to be within any distance to her. Also Bella would be a terrible vampire and the best thing she could do now, would be to crawl into a hole and die.
However, she was no longer here because of Bella. There was now another girl on the scene. Her name was Lucy and she seemed to have charmed everyone around her. It was Lucy she'd have to kill if she wanted revenge on Edward.
It hadn't been easy to track her as she was surrounded twenty-four seven and rarely went out around town. However, she was an experienced tracker and had finally picked up her scent and followed it to a secluded forest area. There were no distinguishable points to the area and she could smell no other scent apart from Lucy's. Yet the girl wasn't here. She could see nothing that suggested where she was either. She'd assessed the area from several sides and she was completely alone. She'd just decided to depart when she heard a growl come from behind her. Already on defence as a vampire she could have been out of there in mere seconds had she not been pounced upon by a fair few large wolves.
Normal wolves would be no problem but as her left arm was ripped off, she realised that these weren't normal wolves. It wasn't long after the start of the attack that her life was ended.
[BREAK]
LUCY P.O.V
It was well into the night when Lucy was woken up by Edward gently shaking her shoulders.
"What's happening?" she asked groggily.
"The wolves are here" he said.
She instantly perked up; she hadn't had a chance to see the wolves since their New Year's bash two weeks previously. However as she looked over and saw the time on her alarm clock read 3:30am, she realised that their call couldn't be a social one.
"Sam, Jacob" she greeted, smiling at the two men. The rest of the pack stood around in their wolf forms.
They nodded their heads, small smiles appearing on their faces momentarily before their faces turned serious once more.
"We had an intruder on our lands this evening" said Jacob.
"They didn't survive past meeting us" said Sam.
"Who was it? Who intruded upon your life" said Edward.
"Victoria" said Sam seriously.
At the mention of the name, Lucy dissolved into a fit of giggles. Her sudden change in emotion made the others look at her wearily.
"Are you ok?" asked Edward in a concerned voice.
It took her a couple of minutes to calm herself down before she was able to talk without giggling.
"It just seems so silly that Victoria actually thought herself a match for me, or any of us really. She had a pathetic little revenge scheme over a vampire who she thought was her mate, although actually he was playing her as much as he was playing everyone else. That she actually decided to track me down and attempt to kill me, shows that she didn't have as much brains as she thought she did. I do not pity the end of her life as I'm sure she has taken countless of others, but I will pity what she turned into because it was by my old hand that she became what she was" said Lucy.
Sam nodded solemnly, "I am relieved you are not disturbed by the fact that Victoria was coughed and killed, however that is not the end of the matter".
"She had Bella's scent all over him" said Jacob.
"Oh well that is amusing" said Lucy "I'm assuming that she sought Victoria out as a way to turn into a vampire. Yet, assuming – from what I've heard – that Victoria's temperament has remained the same, she probably mocked Bella openly and turned her down. She would not want to sully her hands with that of Bella. However, it will be a problem in the future I believe".
Sam and Jacob nodded "We shall be on her guard then" they said.
"I don't think you need to be too cautious, I do not believe that we will be seeing Bella in Forks, I think she is lying further afield" said Lucy.
They all nodded, the Cullen's who had been staying quiet up until now, noticed the yawn that Lucy tried to hide behind her hand. It was incredibly early in the morning for her and seeing as the wolves had finished telling her what had happened and she had finished remarking upon it, the Cullen's decided that it was time for Lucy to head back to bed. She didn't complain, in fact she was almost asleep as Edward carried her upwards.
Jasper and Carlisle stayed behind with the wolves, wanting to have a quiet word with them about upcoming events. There was little to none hostility left between the two species and they had a common goal to work towards.
[BREAK]
Following the events of the previous evening, Edward had decided to make this evening more special. He was quite traditional, yet everything that he'd done with Lucy had been backwards. They acted like a couple, kissed like a couple – occasionally fought like a couple – but he'd never actually asked her on a proper date or asked her to be his girlfriend and that was something he intended to change.
END OF P.O.V
[BREAK]
She woke oddly enough with a big smile on her face. It was her behaviour last night that had confused the others but to her it was just a natural development. She knew Victoria would make another appearance just as she knew that the institute wouldn't be able to hold Bella for long. It was sometimes a good feeling when your brain got something right.
She was however, ripped from her post haze sleep by the arms of Alice and Rose – both of who were grinning manically at her. She had little time to process her speech pattern before she was thrust into the shower and hot water began falling down on her. She could hear the two women arguing about clothes outside the room, it wasn't exactly hard as they were talking quite loudly but their conversation didn't bode well for Lucy.
This was how Lucy spent her morning, being primped and preened by Alice and Rose and though being pampered sounded like a lot of fun, it was actually filled with considerable pain. She saw neither hide nor hair of anyone till her stomach started rumbling and she begged her captives to let her go for a while.
Though they were hesitant to let her go, they recognised the fact that she needed to eat a long with the fact that there were at least three people in the house that would chastise them if they didn't look after Lucy to the best of their ability.
Lucy was however, disappointed that despite her allotted lunch break, she didn't see Edward at all. It was as if he had left the house altogether. It made her sad to think of that, as he never left the house without saying goodbye to her first. However, this concerned part of her brain was countered by the logical part of her brain which told her that he wouldn't forget to say goodbye to her unless he had something important to do. Besides she had little Myles entertaining her all the way through lunch and that was enough to make her momentarily forget Edward's absence.
After lunch, it was straight back to the clutches of Alice and Rose. She tried in vain to get Emmett's attention and to help her get away but he seemed to be ignoring her and laughing at her. She wasn't amused.
Five hours later and she'd endured way too much pain and torment at the hands of the two women and she looked exactly the same as she would had she dressed herself. Ok granted her skin felt softer and appeared brighter and they'd done something with the make-up that made her face look amazing but overall she could have achieved the same result on her own.
Nevertheless by the time the two women had shoved her to the top of the stairs and saw Edward standing at the bottom, she was thankful for all the work and pain that she'd suffered. Edward was every bit as handsome as he usually was, but his radiant smile was enough to blind most mortals.
He took her to a small restaurant in Port Angles. It seemed to be mostly dominated by elderly couples or work meetings but the noise levels were – thankfully – quite low. They were led to a secluded corner by a waiter to be seated and given menus. It was the first time that Edward would be able to eat in public and he was looking forward to it. In fact all the Cullen's were eternally grateful and felt incredibly blessed that they had this human gift back.
As they were waiting for their food to arrive, Edward broke their comfortable silence.
"You look stunning" he murmured.
She blushed "I suppose it's your fault I had a day of torture with Alice and Rose" she growled.
Edward laughed heartedly "a small price to pay for their happiness though" he said.
She nodded a small smile upon her face.
They chatted happily until halfway through dessert, where Edward dissolved into a fit of chuckles, when Lucy looked up – ice cream and chocolate sauce around her mouth – declared that she couldn't finish her pudding.
His chuckles embarrassed her but she managed to move past it.
On their walk back to the car – which seemed to take infinitely longer than necessary, Edward stopped and she ended up walking into the back of him.
He smirked when she admitted a high pitched 'oww'.
"I was thinking, we do everything backwards, we love each other but we aren't dating, we live together but we aren't a couple. I thought about asking you to be my girlfriend but that didn't feel strong enough for what I was feeling. However I decided what I did want to ask you but I'm afraid that you'll think it's too soon. We've known you for about a year now but we've never really talked about us" he said seriously.
Lucy recognised his nervousness and placed a calming hand on his shoulder.
"Would you be at all opposed to me asking you to marry me?" he asked hopefully.
Lucy knew this was difficult for him, they'd had many a conversation about how he thought he had no soul and she had gone a long way to proving his opinion wrong. He was now in a place where he was happy in his own skin and she recognised that as a big step for him. She knew to other people that it would be weird or odd that they got together too quickly, others might not understand their relationship but she didn't care much for what other people said.
"Yes" she replied.
[BREAK]
EDWARD P.O.V
"This is what you want, to marry her?" asked Carlisle.
"I don't ever want her to leave my side, I will love her for all eternity" said Edward strongly.
"Don't hate me for asking this but at one point you felt strong feelings for Bella, and you grew out of those, how do you know you won't do the same with Lucy" asked Carlisle.
Edward knew Carlisle was simply curious but he couldn't help but feel a little angered by his comment.
"My feelings for Lucy far and high above what I felt for Bella. Bella was the first one to see me as anything other than a monster but her feelings for me were superficial and it was her own obsession with immortal life that fuelled her desire to be with me. If Lucy hadn't have turned up it might have taken me a lot longer to see Bella's true colours but I would have seen them. Lucy is beyond anything I could have imagined receiving. There is a pureness within her that I haven't seen before, she loves completely, cares completely and is more selfless than anyone I know. She's had a hard left, apparently had two lives, half the time she doesn't understand what she's doing. Any lesser person would have broken down by now but she keeps going, she is determined to do everything within her power to right previous wrongs and give us the best chance at our existence but most of all she loves me for myself, I don't have to change or be different, she accepts all of me and I will always love her" said Edward.
Carlisle nodded "then I believe you've made the right choice".
AN: I think perhaps Edward is a little OOC here but after many attempts I just decided to leave it. This has been one of those stories where the plot got more and more complicated and I'm now forcing myself to finish. I never like leaving a story unfinished. However, I think it will be a LONG time before I ever attempt a Twilight story again.
There are only 2 more chapters of this story before it's complete ~ Zyii
