Chapter 8

The night wasn't over yet, two cats have been dealt with and a fire was lit throughout the tunnels, luckily no one was hurt, aside from them. The fire was reported by a civilian, the flames were too big to be looked over. Within minutes, the fire department was called and were on their way. Some people tried to take some of it out themselves until the firemen arrived but their efforts were futile. No one knows who or what started it but they were hoping it would end soon.

Calamity Coyote finished up yet another experiment in his lab, another night accomplished. He reached for his phone and dialed the number as he reached for another object, his voice box. The phone rang until the other line was answered.

"Hello?"

"Sneezer, it's Calamity," he said, his voice had an adequate tone with a hint of an English accent, "listen, I've examined your antidote for allergies and it's made improvements but unfortunately has no signs for a definite cure."

"Well that's too bad, Dr. Coyote," Sneezer replied on the other line, "is there any chance for us?"

"I still need to run more tests, in the meantime see if you can come up with a different combination, then send it to me and we'll test it out as well."

"Count on it, doctor."

"Oh also, I'm taking off tomorrow, Buster called me this morning to go back to the studio for another short so I won't be back until Saturday."

"Thanks for letting me know, okay doctor, say hi to the Mrs. for me."

"I will, have a good night, old friend." The two hung up and Calamity separated the voice box from his jaw. He remembered when he first bought it, it sounded so robotic that he made a few rearrangements in order for it to fit his intellect. It wasn't long until Sneezer called him for his assistance on his long-running project for finding a permanent cure for allergies. The coyote took the opportunity and saw the challenge as a step up in the world of science. It also gave him the opportunity to reunite with Sneezer and to not stray away from the rest of his former Tiny Toon co-stars, that is, except for one…

Calamity removed his lab coat and his experimenting goggles, he turned off the lights and exited the lab. His lab far not too far from his house, his newlywed wife, Camilla Coyote, convinced him to have it away from their home so he wouldn't be a shut-in and isolated from society. This way, he would be able to see the outside world on the way to work. Camilla, that's who he was coming home to.

He left the lab and headed towards his car and opened it. The coyote didn't turn on the ignition; he just sat back and relaxed before he decided to go home.

"Hello old friend."

Calamity turned around to see who that voice belonged to. He saw what appeared to be a skunk in a black leather coat sitting in the back seat with a foot paw crossed. The poor coyote was so scared that he almost crashed through his car door. The crow cawed as it landed in front of him but Calamity was still too spooked to stay calm.

"Shh," Furrball, calmly told him, "I won't hurt you, calm down." Calamity still wouldn't listen, with no voice, he couldn't scream, that meant that no one would hear him. He tried unlocking his doors but Furrball slammed the lock down, "I said calm down, Calamity!" that did it, the coyote looked at him confused. Furrball's crow flew to him and dropped the voice box in front of Calamity from its beak.

"Step out of the car for a minute," Furrball stated, the two slowly walked out, their eyes still gazing at each other. The coyote picked up his voice box.

"Who are you?" Calamity asked, "and how do you know my name?"

Furrball tilted his head, "is that your voice? What happened to your signs?"

"Who are you?!"

The revived cat looked at him, "see if you remember this one," he looked down to see two average-sized stones, Furrball picked them up. "Here's…HAMTON!" Furrball crushed one stone with his left paw at the sound of that name, "…and Plucky!" he threw the other one up to a streetlight, shattering the glass. Calamity was still frightened, he was now leaning against the car, why am I not calling the police right now? he thought, this guy is a psychopath!

Furrball turned back around to face him as he ominously sang the next line, "Dizzy Devil's yucky," he pointed to Calamity, expecting him to take it from there. He didn't answer, the revived cat waited a few seconds until Calamity replied but didn't. He continued to stare at him until the coyote finally did, he put up his voice box and spoke, "…Furrball's…unlucky?"

Furrball grinned, "…and Gogo is insane," he concluded, he looked back at his friend hoping for some kind of reaction. Calamity just stood there, putting two and two together until he came across the realization.

"Furrball?"

The cat nodded, the coyote started to smile and walk up to him. Furrball opened his arms for his friend to welcome him back but Calamity shoved him back, causing him to fall backwards.

"You've got a lot of nerve showing your face here!" Calamity yelled, "after all these years, no less!"

"Cal, I can explain," Furrball dusted himself off as he helped himself up, "I know I've been gone for a while but I have a good reason-"

"Is it as good as to why you're in those clothes you're wearing?!"

"You don't understand, let me explain!"

"What's to explain? You ditched us, me and Fifi, and to think I was hoping you two would get together."

"I didn't ditch you guys, you know how I felt about Fifi, you're my best friend!"

"Doesn't change the fact that you've been gone for almost three years with no reason whatsoever."

"You're right, I've been gone for a long time, don't I at least owe you an explanation?"

Calamity became mixed with emotions, he was happy that his best friend returned but was mad that it took him all this time to find his way back home, worse, he left without saying a word. Furrball didn't know that his time away affected many.

"Alright then," Calamity stated, he crossed his arms, "let's hear it."

Furrball walked closer to him, the painted grin cringed as he frowned, "I've been dead for three years," he said bluntly. The coyote just stood there, he thought he was lying, "really?" he asked sarcastically, "that's your big excuse? Is that the best you can come up with?!" He continued to insult Furrball until the painted cat wrapped his paws around Calamity's head and forced the visions of his death as proof. Calamity saw his demise from years ago, from his final encounter with Fifi to leaving his cardboard box house, to his kidnapping and eventual death.

Furrball let him go as Calamity tried to comprehend what he had just witnessed.

"You…you're…dead?!" Furrball sadly nodded, "but…how could you be dead?! How could you still be here?! It doesn't make sense!" So many questions raced through his mind that Calamity's antics were making him uneasy.

"Easy Cal," Furrball said, "you're starting to look like some mad scientist anxious to cut open a test subject."

"Sorry, I just…you're dead!" Calamity yelled, "that's not scientifically possible, you've found a cure for death, immortality! A Toon such as yourself was revived after nine DIP-soaked shots, this is a one-of-a-kind breakthrough!"

"Believe me, this goes way beyond the laws of science," Furrball held up a paw as his crow flew to him and landed on the outstretched paw, "Cal, this is my crow, I call him Eric, Eric, this is my best friend Calamity Coyote. 'Eric' cawed at Calamity and flew off in another direction to pass time.

"A crow?" Calamity observed, he thought on it, "I can't see the logic in that, maybe I should run some tests on you, we can go back to the lab real quick-"

"There's no time, Calamity," Furrball interrupted, "I've returned to let everyone know that I'm okay…as okay as I'll never be but they deserve to know the truth."

"Indeed, the ones responsible are still out there."

"And who's to say they won't do the same thing to someone else?"

Calamity looked at Furrball, "do you remember anything from you're…rebirth?"

Furrball shook his head, "death is something you don't really remember, I don't recall if I went up or…below."

"Then that explains it, I may be a scientist but even scientists have theories."

"What do you mean?"

"Furrball…have you ever heard of…the 'crow theory'?"

The revived cat thought about it, "I think we heard of it back in the 1990's, back in cinema class, was it?"

"Exactly, the legend says that when someone passes tragically, a mystical crow carries their soul to the right destination, but sometimes…just sometimes, the soul refuses to rest, its demise was too heartbreaking that it had to be brought back to Earth to make the wrong things right."

Furrball took the news all in, he slowly turned to face the windows of Calamity's car. He looked at his reflection and understood, "that explains it," he pointed out, "I knew I was dead, I knew I had to make the wrong things right, I just didn't know why I shed a tear if I was already dead." He looked back at the coyote, "after I…took care one of Alley Cat that kidnapped me, I shed a tear," Calamity nodded as Furrball continued explaining, "I know I'm supposed to be dead but it happened, I thought corpses weren't supposed to function like the rest of the living."

"That is part of the theory, you do not feel physical pain, you feel emotional pain, you are just allowed to 'live' until Lious' and his gang are put to rest." Calamity put a paw on his friend's shoulder, "all these years we thought you snapped and ran away," he told him, "the organizations, the investigations, and these cats have been running loose this entire time."

"I know," Furrball replied, "but they're paying for it…one by one."

"I still can't believe you've been dead this whole time, where was your carcass anyway?"

"Don't you remember from the visions?"

"I don't want to remember anything from those visions."

The painted cat smirked as he told him, "Lious and his cronies tossed me into Elmyra's old house in a burlap sack, rotting for the past few years."

"Clever on their behalves," the coyote nodded, "no one ever purchased the house because of the 'pet cemetery' and realtors gave up trying so they too abandoned it, those cats knew no one would ever bother to look there, to them it was the perfect crime." He shifted his attention back to him, "why didn't you tell me that you've been hiding there from them?"

"Would you step paw in there after what Elmyra put you through?"

Calamity sighed, it wasn't Furrball's fault that he died at the paws of an Alley Cat gang nor was it his fault that he tried every method possible to stay away from trouble. "Well, you're back, now you can set the wrong things right," Calamity said, "you can explain to everyone what happened to you, I just wish you were alive, maybe I can find some kind of formula to bring the dead back to life!"

"Don't play uh, you know," Furrball pointed at the sky, "I'd hate to see what He'd have to say about you playing his role." Furrball became serious, "I have to let everyone know, Calamity, where can I find Professor Sylvester?"

Calamity bowed his head in shame, he remembered the state the veteran Toon was in when Furrball disappeared, "I… don't know," he said, "last I saw him was when their new show ended, I don't know where you can find him."

"Not even at Dizzy's?"

"I haven't gone to Dizzy's since his grand opening," the coyote pulled out a picture, "that's where I met my wife."

Furrball took the picture and saw his best friend with a female coyote clinging to his arm while smiling at the camera. "She's beautiful," he stated, "you two seem…happy together."

"Thank you, listen, if you want to find Sylvester then I suggest you check his records at the old Acme Loo, staff alumni never torch their old files."

"Alright then, tell me, from your perspective, how has he been?"

"Furrball…words cannot describe the state he was in when you went missing, I think it's best if you saw it yourself," Calamity started walking to his car, "the theory says that you must right the wrongs, not just in death…but in life too." The coyote opened his car door and sat down as Furrball's crow returned and landed on his shoulder. The painted cat walked up to him as he spoke up again, "Sylvester…left the school after you went missing for so long, he didn't want another student because you were very special to him. Without you, he gave up teaching and left but eventually joined in with the other Looney Tunes to form a new show. Unfortunately it only lasted for a few years and he isolated himself from the others again once it ended, no one's seen him that often nowadays. To make matters even worse, even after he left he didn't even attend our graduation, that's how depressed he was. I didn't think your disappearance took that much of an effect on him but it took just as big an effect on all of us."

Furrball took that news as he started feeling guilty, "I must do it," he said, "I owe him that much and a lot more, I won't lie back in my grave without seeing my old teacher, he deserves to know the truth, and hopefully…a second chance at his old life."

Calamity turned away from his friend, "I know he's still alive somewhere but tracking him down is another story." He turned back around to tell Furrball furthermore but he saw that the aforementioned cat had already disappeared, "this wasn't a dream," Calamity said to himself, confidently, "if I ever meant anything to him, if all of us ever meant anything to him then I'd see him again, I know I will."

I don't know much on what happened this whole time, Furrball thought, but I do know that I've been brought back for a very good reason. He continued to run through the shadows, I wanted to see Cal and I did, he wanted an explanation and that's exactly what I gave him, if Sylvester is upset that I stopped being his student then I will make it up to him before I leave this Earth…and maybe…when this is all said and done…I can finally see Fifi…

Furrball continued to run through the shadows until he reached his destination, an old building that seemed to be getting old and worn out. Furrball walked up the stairs and to the front of the doors. He remembered it clearly, despite its current condition, it was still one of the few places he considered another home. He was finally going to find out what happened to his former mentor while he was gone. He jumped up and climbed his way to the roof. With no way of already losing his life, he climbed with no fear until he reached the top. "There," he pointed at the vent and his crow followed him right on down. Furrball slid until he landed inside. After all these years, he has now entered Acme Looniversity.

To be continued…

A/N: The bit where Calamity stated the 'crow theory' was from the original Crow film, but I didn't type it word for word obviously. Also, another connection to the original movie was that Furrball named his crow Eric, as in Eric Draven, the main protagonist/anti-hero of the film. The final trivia/fact ('Nothing is trivial') is that the show that the Looney Tunes did is obviously The Looney Tunes Show, I hate be the spoiler and bringer of bad news but I think they're cancelling it, hence the aforementioned ending :-( Hope you enjoyed this Furrball-oriented chapter. I will return in two weeks unfortunately, I'm doing another fic and I need the extra time to have it done in time. Once again I won't abandon this story because the next chapter we will finally have Sylvester appear, what has he been doing all this time? Thanks for reading and don't forget to review. Prepare to be surprised! I'll be back in two weeks! Promise!
