Disclaimer: Thanks for the reviews everyone, and for anyone who took the time to check the story out! Before we begin, I want to bring up an important fact. Timon64 brought up a good point and I don't think I explained it as of yet, this of course involves the Toons' ages. Let's clarify, the Toons are in their early 20s, 21-22 at the most, Furrball, seeing as how he's been dead for almost three years, hasn't aged at all, you could say that with his attire that's covering most of his body prevented Sylvester and Calamity and any of the other Alley Cats from ever pointing it out or recognizing him altogether. Thank you Timon64 for bringing this up. Now then, let's start with the official reunion between Fifi and Furrball, I own nothing so enjoy!
Chapter 10
Calamity arrived home to finally end his night. He had a lot to do the next day so he needed to practice in the morning in order to be ready for another collaboration with Buster. He usually recited his lines and a few scenes at the breakfast table in front of Camilla and she always enjoyed his antics. Although Camilla didn't have a full-time job like her husband, she still managed to pull her weight along with part-time jobs every now and then, she considered herself, in a way, a free spirit. That was one of the reasons their relationship worked. Calamity loved performing in front of her, if he could get her to laugh then he knew he still had it. The shorts he would have with Buster or anyone the blue rabbit had in store for them were pretty much the only times he wouldn't use his voice box which he didn't really mind, seeing as how Buster told him he was saving a short for him for when he did talk.
The coyote still couldn't believe that his long-time friend Furrball had just returned to his life. All this time he thought he selfishly ran off, instead he was dead the whole time, murdered at the paws of old enemies. "Heartless," Calamity thought to himself, regarding the Alley Cats, "heartless and soulless, yet they're born with nine lives, why those cats deserve to live longer than sophisticated ones I'll never know."
He entered his house and headed upstairs to the bedroom he shared with his wife. Once there he turned on the lights to change out of his clothes until he heard a whisper coming from that same room.
"About time you came home."
Calamity nearly jumped through the ceiling as that voice did not belong to Camilla. He turned around to see Furrball and his crow sitting on a chair facing the outside through a window. Startled, he reached for his voice box, "what are you doing here?" he whispered back, "how did you know I live here? And how did you get here so fast?"
Furrball shrugged, "I don't know, Toon logic?" the hint of sarcasm made Calamity narrow his eyes in the same manner, "we gotta' talk," the painted cat pointed out as he got up off the chair, "let's step outside for a minute, it's important." The two left the room and headed outside.
"First off," Furrball started, "I'm sorry I barged into your home like that, I made a quick return to Acme Loo after seeing Sylvester and saw your current address, they kept it to send out those reunion invites I guess."
"Well at least you didn't hurt Camilla," Calamity replied, "although dead or not I don't see you as the type of dead to eat brains."
"You will have to explain to me about the vampire, werewolf and zombie craze that overwhelmed this world sometime."
The coyote smiled, yeah, this was his friend, dead or not.
"How was Sylvester?" he asked him, "is he…okay?"
"He is…now," Furrball responded, "he's been through so much, now I know why you wanted me to see him on my own."
"You disappearing really messed him up, enough to quit his job."
"It wasn't just me, his wife and son left him because of me."
"What?"
"His wife didn't approve of him teaching his son Junior to prey on other critters and she still made a big deal about it when she found out he was teaching me to do it, even though I was having trouble knowing it was just pretend."
"So things were just getting worse for him as time went by, even after the new show ended."
"He became a drunk, completely ready to die," Furrball turned to his left, away from Calamity, "he hated himself so much that he barely recognized me, I doubt he'd recognize anyone else in the outside world."
"Can only imagine how he is now."
"Like I said, he's better now, somehow I managed to extract the liquor out of his system."
Calamity was impressed, "You're a walking science project, you know that?" he told the cat.
Furrball lightly smirked, "I even managed to convince him to go reunite with his family, I just hope things work out for him."
"You know, you should've gotten your own show."
"I saw on a newspaper article that they had cameras follow Elmyra to her new home for a spin-off, I actually feel sorry for the mice she's with right now."
"Yeah that show was doomed from the start." The two laughed until Calamity spoke up again, "so, why are you back here again?"
"It's Fifi," Furrball told him, "I need to see her."
The coyote sighed, "I was hoping that this wouldn't come up."
"I already know she's with Hamton, I just want to talk to her."
"Furrball, I think it's best if you stay away from her."
"Look, I already saw her once since I came back," Furrball remembered he was taking care of Whisk that night, "I couldn't find her current address at the school since she lived in a car and I owe her an explanation since everyone thinks I'm a selfish jerk right now."
Calamity tried to talk him out of it, "that's the point," he retorted, "she hates you so much right now that it's not even worth going through the trouble."
"I was ripped away from her, Cal, I need to know where she lives so I can redeem myself."
"But Furrball...Fifi and I haven't spoken to each other since you were gone, we're not even friends anymore."
Furrball couldn't believe it, his two best friends were no longer on good terms and it was all because of him, no, because of Lious.
"Why?...How did this happen?" the cat wanted answers.
"After you…were gone," Calamity started his story, "Fifi started to change. On the night that it happened she contacted me asking if you were with me. I told her no and that's when she began to worry, apparently she was waiting for you to arrive since you planned on meeting up with her. It was midnight and that pretty much told her that you weren't coming."
"That's when the Alley Cats got ahold of me," Furrball spoke out.
"Exactly, it wasn't long until she started seeing Hamton. They started getting closer to the point she even forgot about me, she spent less and less time with me and hardly spoke to me. Sylvester left and I had just about it, I isolated myself from everyone else."
"How come?"
"After a while, we came to a point where Fifi wouldn't even acknowledge my own existence and when I found out she was officially with Hamton, that's when I gave up the friendship."
Furrball nodded as he continued to listen.
"The last time she ever spoke to me again was when she came crying to me, apparently Shirley had a vision that revealed you running off with some female cat on the night you were supposed to see Fifi. She said on that night, Hamton called her before she left the car and he asked her out."
Furrball cringed at that thought but calmed himself down, Hamton wasn't at fault here.
"She rejected him," Calamity continued, much to the cat's relief, "she rejected him because you got to her first, but when you didn't show up, she called him right back to take him up on his early offer."
Furrball narrowed his eyes, he bowed his head as he continued to listen.
"After Graduation we all moved on, the very final time I ever spoke to Fifi was at Dizzy's grand opening when I saw she took a job there as a bartender and singer. I asked how she was and she told me that she and Hamton have been serious since Acme Loo and have been living together…"
Upon hearing that, Furrball motioned for his crow to leave them for a while, the bird obeyed and flew off to another destination.
"Why did Shirley say that about me?" Furrball asked him, "did anyone stop to think that that didn't sound like me? Since when did I become heartless?!"
"I don't know, that's what she told her when they announced it to everyone else, apparently Babs and her knew all along and didn't want to tell her until the 'time was right'."
"I doubt Shirley would lie, Plucky would, but not her, something happened with her powers, that's the only explanation I can think of."
"Well you have powers to back up your claim, even better that you can send witnesses the emotions."
"Still, I understand what you're telling me," he told Calamity, "I won't get in the way of Hamton and Fifi…but she still deserves to know the truth."
Calamity just looked at him, hoping that he wouldn't go through with it but even he knew that he'd be intruding in someone's love life as well.
"I love her, you know that," Furrball spoke up, "I've loved her since she first chased me, I'll admit, her stench bothered me and it still does so I can't act like it's not there but still, I can't ignore how I feel."
"Why do you love her? Can you at least answer me that?" Calamity never really asked Furrball what was it that made Fifi so attractive to him. Granted the skunkette is attractive but was looks really all that mattered to him? There were other girls at the school that could be more or just as beautiful as Fifi.
"I love her…because even when I was roaming the streets, digging for food in garbage cans, she saw me…and didn't care about any of that. What girl would want to date someone who eats fish from garbage cans?" Furrball opened up his cold heart, "even though I had a painted stripe, she still saw me for me, stripe or not. I wanted to tell her the truth about that night and I know she can still accept me without it, it's called honesty, coming clean with everything I've done. Now, all I can hope for is her forgiveness…since my chances for being with her were buried with me that night."
For all these years, the coyote never understood why his friend loved the skunkette so much but now he knew, Fifi has a big heart, who wouldn't love a girl like that?
"She gave me a home sometimes," the cat continued, "and I'd give her company in return, and we'd enjoy it, as friends."
Calamity started to think about Camilla. When Calamity first met her he thought she would laugh at him for being the one getting hit with so many objects in his cartoons. Turns out she enjoyed that about him, she merely laughed along with him.
"If she means that much to you…"Calamity turned around and started to head back inside the house. Furrball took the hint and disappeared. The coyote knew he vanished into thin air as he closed the door, he didn't even need to turn back around to acknowledge it.
"Goodnight my friend," Calamity said under his breath.
…
The Alley Cats returned to their burnt hideout, the only objects that seemed to remain was the cushion Lious always sat on and Tus' eye patch.
"Tus," Nicus whispered, "you will be remembered."
"Does this raise any suspicions now?!" Mestic yelled at Lious, "now Tus is dead, can you explain that?!"
Lious replied with a blow to the fedora-wearing cat's jaw, knocking him out cold with the hat flying.
"Feral, take 'im for a walk an' bring'im back when he's up," Lious ordered the big cat and he obeyed, "now we know that there's somethin' out there tha's after us, so what we're gonna' do is find'im b'fore he finds us."
"Well how do we do that?" Clawz asked, "we don't know who he is or how he looks like, he could be anyone!"
Lious looked at him strangely as Nicus ran towards the young cat to hold him off.
"Glad ya' asked, Clawz, we're gonna' use…bait an' lure'im to us."
Upon hearing that, Clawz immediately started to panic and struggled to break free from his leaders' grasp, "Lid, find the nearest chain and tie him up," the orange cat ordered, the long-tailed Lid rolled her eyes and obeyed. The vest-wearing cat continued to struggle and yell, "no please! We can do it some other way, you can't do this to me!"
Lious just about had with him so he knocked him out as well, "I'm gonna' go to the ole' Duff house an' see if he's still there."
"Paranoid, are we?" Nicus joked but his boss was serious, "do you wanna' be the bait? Thought so." Lious walked away, leaving the others with their own jobs.
"If this really is Furrball…then I'm blamin'im for this too."
…
The crow continued flying through Acme Acres until it reached Acme Loo once again. He flew right in through the vent and made it to Principal Bugs' office. Once inside, it went through the students' records until he found one in particular. Its vision sent the images to Furrball, now he only needed to get back to the cat in time to see him reunite with another old friend. The crow flew off afterwards, leaving the address of one Hamton J. Pig.
…
Hamton sat in his car thinking heavily until he decided it was time to go. He now knew what he needed to do and he needed to see Fifi for it.
"May won't get out of my head," the pig whispered to himself, "not until I…I have to do this, it's the only way." He drove off with only one thought going through his head, "it's the only way…it's the only way…"
…
Fifi went back upstairs after finishing up her snack. She started to grow a little tired and a lot more worried about Hamton, he still didn't come home yet. She was used to him coming home late at times but there were times where she'd wonder why he'd stay out so late. The family company wasn't much work to close nor should it take up so much time, yet it still continued. Despite it, Fifi would usually call to check in on him, but there were also times when Hamton wouldn't even answer his phone. And just like that, when he finally did return he'd just get into bed, kiss her goodnight in a half-hearted affectionate manner and sleep. This wasn't like him, the purple skunkette knew that, but what Fifi was hoping was that he wasn't seeing someone else behind her back. The fact that they have not yet slept together made her almost made her a little paranoid.
Fifi tried shaking those thoughts out as she entered her bedroom. She opened the door to see the window wide open with the curtain fluttering in. She sighed and closed it, "zom'ding's…not right," she pondered, she looked around the room but found nothing. She checked the closet only to see the regular clothes, she checked under the bed and it showed that she was the only living being in that room. "Je mus' be going crazy," she yawned but the window flew open again and to her annoyance she closed it with the tiny locks and curtain for good measure. She slid into her nightgown and into the bed where she slowly dozed off. Within a minute she was sound asleep.
A shadow crept over her, it made its way to the side of the bed where she slept. Furrball tilted his head, "I don't know how I did it but I did it," he thought to himself, he looked at Fifi's peaceful face. Her sleeping, in a way, soothed him, his vengeful attitude was starting to cool off.
"Fifi…" he whispered, "I…can't believe I'm here with you right now, it's been too long. I just want you to know, even if you can't hear me right now, that I'd never do anything to hurt you."
A small tear came down his whiskers, he felt it but continued on, this made him feel more alive.
"You mean a lot to me, you and Calamity, I can't imagine how my life…could've been without you guys, I know you've heard some things about me, I don't know how that's possible but please believe me when I say it's not true."
Fifi's face started to twitch and Furrball took notice, he turned around to hide again but the skunkette opened her eyes before he could do so. Her vision cleared and through the moonlight piercing through the curtains, she saw the stripe behind his coat. She gasped, Furrball expected her to scream but instead he heard the covers being shifted. Fifi was out of bed and the cat slowly turned around to meet her gaze.
"If vous don' tell me who you are an' vhat' you are doing here zhen' I vill' call ze' police."
"Brave girl," Furrball thought regarding her calm tone, he was about to speak but the skunkette interrupted him, "I v'remember vous," she told him, "you are ze' skunk who vas' fighting zhat' Alley Cat, give moi a rea'zon vhy' I shouldn't 'ave you arrested."
Furrball knew Fifi would smack him with her tail and not even bother to hear him out if he spoke first. He remembered what Calamity told him, he too had powers, just as amazing as Shirley's so he could back himself up. So without hesitation, he replied by quickly putting his paws on Fifi's head and injected her with his memories. He felt guilty, with revealing these images to her she would feel almost the exact same psychological pain he felt, but it needed to be done, there was no other way. "I'm sorry," the painted cat whispered to her, "please forgive me, it's the only way you'll listen."
The skunkette's eyes were blank, her vision changed to images to Furrball's point-of-view and what he had done since his return. The mess he's made, up to Sylvester's encounter. Everything was forced in her psyche' causing Fifi to pass out.
Furrball panicked, "Fifi!" he was scared out of his mind, "oh I'm so sorry! I knew it was a bad idea, I shouldn't have come here!"
He gently picked her up and laid her back on the bed, guilty, he decided to leave and finish off the Alley Cat gang just to head back to the grave sooner. In Fifi's mind, she was still picturing the cat's past life, the moments and everything made her tear up a little. It wasn't until she landed on the day of Furrball's last breath that she woke up at the sound of Lious firing the ninth shot.
"Ahhh!" Fifi gasped, she opened her eyes to see Furrball about to leave through the window.
"Furrball…?" she stared at him wide-eyed, "iz'…iz' zhat' really…you?"
The tone in her voice sounded welcoming, he looked back at her bed, "Fifi," he whispered to her, "I am so…so sorry, I never meant to hurt you, you know I'd never purposely ditch you like that-"
"Come 'ere, sit."
Fifi motioned for him to sit by her on her side of the bed, she held up a paw and reached for his face. Furrball wanted to back away for she might freak out from touching a corpse, "shh," she hushed him as she went for his face. Upon touching the left side of the painted cat's face she let out a gasping shudder, "it really iz' you," she said, "vous 'asn't aged…je can feel it." Fifi swerved her paw a little more, "vhat' iz' zhis' on your face?"
"It's paint, ironic isn't it?"
That's when the skunkette started regaining her mentality. She didn't know how to feel, for years she hated Furrball for what she was told he had done and even strayed away from Calamity. But now, here he was, sitting on her bed, by her side.
"You…never left moi?" she needed to make sure, "no," he replied, "and nothing's gonna' take me away from you or anyone else this time."
"Zhen' vhy' did Shirley's vizion' say zhat'-"
"I don't know, but she wouldn't lie about that, she's not like that."
"'Er an' Babs kept zhis' secret from me for almost a year, je iz' starting to 'ave second z'houghts about our friendship."
"Don't say that, they're still your friends, they were just scared."
"Maybe zhat' vizion' vas' a lie, maybe zhey' knew zhat' you were… but vous can't be-"
"But I am, I can't change that, listen, whatever the case is, you know the truth now, the real truth."
"And vhy' should I believe you? 'Ow do I know zhat' zhis' isn't another dream?"
Furrball got up off the bed, "Fifi, if this was a dream then you wouldn't have seen me earlier," he assured, "and I wouldn't be here right now if I didn't feel you deserved to know the truth." He turned around so the purple skunkette would be facing his back, "if I didn't care about you at all as Shirley's vision made me out to look, then I wouldn't have purposely done this to myself." The revived cat pointed at the white stripe painted on the back of his black jacket. He sat back down at her side and looked in her eyes. "This was done," he said, "in your honor."
Fifi started listening, this was getting too weird for her but she just wouldn't turn away.
"You've known me for years," Furrball continued, "you know I'd never put another over you and Calamity, and even if I did then I wouldn't just leave without saying goodbye."
Fifi wanted to believe him, he seemed to believe his own story and the images she had witnessed seemed too real even for her. She felt that maybe he too was lying, judging from the cat's memories, this wasn't the first time Furrball purposely painted himself just for her attention.
"And even if I did leave…I'd take you with me," Furrball concluded, he had hoped Fifi would believe his sincerity, he was running out of options.
Fifi was at her wits end, there was only one way to know for sure if this was a dream or reality.
"Give me your paw," she requested, Furrball didn't hesitate, he couldn't feel physical pain anyway so even if this was her way of unleashing her anger upon him then the cat wouldn't blame her.
"Un'zheathe your claws."
He obeyed and his claws appeared, Fifi then brought up his paw until the claws pointed at her face. To Furrball's shock, she quickly ran them across her face leaving red noticeable scratch marks. Fifi yelped out in pain as her wounds began to take effect on her.
"No!" Furrball immediately retracted his claws and put that same paw on her scratches. Fifi's wounds started healing, she could feel them closing up and the pain fading. She opened her eyes and slowly started to flash her feline companion a smirk, "zhat' vas' not a dream," she whispered.
Fifi quickly got out of the covers and hugged Furrball, "Mon amie!" she exclaimed, "vous 'as come home!" the purple skunkette started to kiss him all over, "vous prob'ly saw moi change into my nightgown but who cares?! You're here!" How happy she was knowing that he was telling the truth. Furrball returned the embrace but unfortunately for him, he noticed her stench releasing from her tail. Before he could react to it they both heard a cawing sound. The cat and skunk turned around to see Furrball's crow sitting on the window.
"Zhis' must be Eric," Fifi giggled, "bonjour."
Furrball was then tugged back to the bed, "vous is…" Fifi gave him a sad expression, "but…zhe' catz', zhey' must-"
"They will, every last one of them."
"Zhen' vhat'?"
"I guess…I finally rest."
Fifi took that news straight to the heart, "but…but vous memories," she tried to reason with him without tearing up, "vhen' you were in Ms. Penelope's office, didn't vous say you lo-"
The skunkette was interrupted at a sound coming from outside, the crow turned around and through its vision Furrball saw Hamton quickly parking his car.
"It's Hamton…" he whispered, "I almost forgot about him."
Fifi started to panic, "'Amton can't see you 'ere, not right now," she ran to her bedroom door and heard their front door open, "vhat' should we do?!"
"Cal and Sylvester are the only ones who've seen me so far, you didn't."
She nodded and turned around to see Hamton running up the stairs, she turned to ask Furrball where he was going to hide but saw that he had already gone. She quickly leapt back into the covers where her boyfriend saw her already awake.
"Fifi, get up," Hamton requested, he sounded like he was in a hurry to do something.
"Vhat iz' it, my love?" she asked him, "iz' zome'zing' wrong?"
"Just get up for me, please? There's something we have to do."
Fifi started to worry, she got out of the bed, "vhat's wrong 'Am-OOMP!"
She was caught off guard by the pig's lips on hers as he started passionately kissing her. Hamton then started to work her nightgown but Fifi tried to draw the line.
"'Amton no," she protested but he didn't seem to stop, "ve' promised to vait'."
"I know, Fifi, I know I promised," he replied in between kisses, "but I have to do this, we need to do this, I've been waiting too long." He went back to her nightgown and it was at this point that the skunkette knew this night was going to change everything. She didn't want to reject his advances yet again, she hated doing that, but now he was going a little too far with them. Fifi loved Hamton but she wanted to wait until they were at least, if ever, married. That was the reason she made him promise her.
She remembered when Babs and Buster had their first night together. Everything changed between them and they went through so much just to keep it together. There was the time when Babs thought Buster was sleeping with the new girl at Acme Loo, Binky Bunny, but thankfully he wasn't, he wasn't even planning on it. Same thing with Shirley and Plucky, once they did it the first time, that was it. Shirley cut him off because Plucky wasn't mature enough to go through it again. Despite it all, both couples played it safe and even had an intervention with Fifi and Hamton regarding sex, they told them the risks and impacts it can have on a couple. They concluded that waiting until the right time would suit them better if they wanted no problems in the future. Now, it seemed like the whole thing was thrown out the window.
Fifi shifted back to reality and noticed Eric the crow still perched on the window. Fifi blushed from embarrassment; she quickly realized why Furrball knew Hamton was coming from outside, he was looking through the eyes of his crow when he was by her bed.
"Je's sorry," the skunkette mouthed, "je iz' so, so sorry."
Hamton managed to remove the nightgown and the two collapsed in the bed. The crow witnessed this until said nightgown hit the floor, by this point it flew away. Furrball himself was perched on the house's roof, watching everything from the black bird's eyes. His own eyes started to tear up from that, he wiped them away and jumped off the house. The painted cat could still hear the noises from that bedroom, it started with Fifi's sounds of protest, to silent whimpering, and finally, sounds of pleasure…from both parties.
It pained Furrball knowing that that was happening but, what could he do? He immediately turned around to leave the premises but turned back around to see that house one more time for it might as well be the last time he'll ever see it.
"Wait a minute," he picked his head up, he started to remember right before Hamton arrived, that's when Fifi's stench started to take effect. Furrball remembered seeing her musk coming from her tail and that's when he realized it, "I didn't smell a thing!" He sniffed the night air and didn't pick up a hint of anything. He remembered the night he took out O'Wildec, the bag he had was contained with a lot of rotting food…and he didn't detect their smell! "I don't have a sense of smell," he realized, "that means that-" he looked back at the house but quickly remembered what was going on.
It didn't matter that Furrball couldn't use his nose anymore, Fifi was with Hamton now and it still hurt him knowing that his chances with her were officially gone…along with her virginity.
To be continued…
A/N: As much as I love FifiXFurrball, I don't hate Hamton, I think he's pretty hilarious. I'm not trying to portray him as a jerk here but there's a reason this happened and it will be explained in next week's chapter so please don't hate me (or him) for making that scene. For what it's worth, it was really hard to do, I didn't think it would be appropriate so I'm sorry if I offended anyone. But still, I thank you for reading, R&R and I'll explain this reason next week, until then!
