Dear Diary 3: Unwritten
Chapter 14: Welcome Back
"My twin brother?" Roxas said hesitantly. "How? What? Are you serious?"
"Roxas," Sora said nudging him. "He looks exactly like you. Of course they're serious…"
Roxas shook his head and stared at his newly found twin. Ventus stepped down and stood in front of Roxas as they stared at each other. It was like watching a child see its reflection for the first time. I was surprised Roxas didn't start freaking out. "Hello, Roxas," Ventus finally said.
He didn't reply; instead he looked up at his parents. Evany and Masuyo stepped off the stairs to stand next to their boys. Evany embraced them both and started crying again. "Mom," Roxas said struggling to get out of her grip. "Why haven't you ever told me about this?"
"Roxas," Sora said cautiously, fully aware that Roxas was on edge.
"No, Sora," he said backing up. "You can't just spring this information up twenty years later and expect me to jump with delight."
"Roxas," Eveny nearly whined. I frowned knowing how badly she wanted this reunion to work out.
"Let's go talk in private," Masuyo said trying to reach out to his son. Roxas resisted and glared at them.
"I want some time alone," he finally said. "I need to think."
"Roxas!" Eveny called out as soon as Roxas turned around to head down the driveway to wherever his mind could take him.
"I'll go talk to him," Sora offered his aunt and uncle.
"Wait, can I go?" Ventus asked nervously. "I really want to go see him. I know how hard it is thinking you're an only child most of your life but maybe if he realizes what I went through, he can come back and actually talk with the rest of us." It instantly earned a hug from Evany. I was happy to see how quickly she had adapted to the son she had put up for adoption years ago. Ventus and Sora began to follow the trail Roxas was leading.
"It'll be okay, Evany," I smiled softly. "They'll bring Roxas back." Yuri and Ryuu led Evany and Masuyo back into the house leaving me in the front yard. This was going to be harder than we expected.
Sora, Roxas, and Ventus didn't return until later that night. I was sitting in the living room with Aqua, Terra, and the Hikaru' s waiting for their return. They all jumped up once the boys walked in. "Ventus!" Terra said to his adopted brother. "I was worried when they told me you went off."
"Hey, I wasn't expecting you guys to be here," he replied.
"Of course we were going to be here. We wanted to know what happened," Aqua smiled.
We looked at Roxas. He walked over to his mom and dad, sighing. "I'm sorry for lashing out. It's just… you can't spring that kind of news on me. You can't just bring me to a random family vacation and tell me I have a brother and expect me to jump for joy at the moment. It's kind of a lot of information to take in when the last twenty years of my life, I believed I was one of a kind. Go figure I'm anything but."
"Oh, honey, you're more than one of a kind." Evany nodded her head and put her hands on his shoulders. "I'm sorry we never told you about this, Roxas. We were just out of high school when I found out I was pregnant. We never knew there were two of you until I was six months along. We wanted to keep you both," she looked at Ventus who nodded. "We just couldn't afford it. We were just scraping by with one child."
"Let's leave them to talk," Yuri, Sora's mom, said. She ushered us into the next room so the Hikaru's could talk in private.
"We should probably get to bed," Sora said looking at me. "Goodnight mom, dad, Aqua, Terra." He nodded at everyone as we walked upstairs to our bedroom. Once he closed the door, he sighed. "This night was not exactly planned out right."
I sat down on the bed. "Tell me about it. I knew Roxas was going to be surprised."
Sora sat down next to me. "Surprised is an understatement," he laughed. His blue eyes looked up at the clock ticking on the opposite wall. "Oh no…"
"What?" I asked facing him.
"We missed Valentine's day." It was eight at night and it was starting to get dark. "I'm so sorry, Kai."
I laughed and hugged him. "Sora, it's okay. We don't always have to do something special each Valentines day. Remember our first Valentine's together? You tricked me into believing you had forgotten and had Namine take me to the pier where Wakka, Selphie, and Tidus served us dinner? Then you gave me this?" I held up my right hand where my infinity ring with a diamond was shining on my ring finger. "I'm pretty sure you can't top that."
Sora smirked and held my left hand, adjusting the purpled heart engagement ring to be centered. "It all led to this."
I placed my hands on his face. "I wouldn't trade anything for the world. We may not have celebrated Valentine's day this year but we have so many more ahead of us. I think skipping one won't hurt."
Sora leaned in and began to kiss me passionately. I let it happen. We fell back onto the bed and continued to make out as he caressed my sides. "I'm so in love with you Kairi Hikari."
"I'm so in love with you Sora Hikaru," I whispered back.
x.o.x.o.
The next few days were quiet in the Hikaru's house hold. Terra and Aqua came by everyday with Ventus so the family could be reunited. I knew it must have been a little hard on Terra to see his brother reunited with his blood family but deep down he must have been happy to let them be together. I was sitting on the porch with Aqua drinking tea when Sora came running out of the house.
"Kairi," he said looking frantic. We both looked at him. "I- er, I need to talk to you alone," his eyes averted toward Aqua.
She stood up and tucked her blue hair behind her ear, smiling politely. "Don't let me stop you. I'll meet you inside."
She disappeared behind the front screen door. Once we heard it click, Sora continued. "Shawn is almost to the island. He just called me to tell me he wants to meet up with me to help him decide on the land he's considering purchasing."
"What are we going to do?" I asked nervously.
"Keep him away from where Aqua and Terra are, of course," he answered. "I need you to make sure we know where they are at all times. We can't let Shawn ruin them."
"He's already ruined enough lives."
"Exactly. I'm about to go leave for the docks to meet him. I'll keep you updated." Sora kissed my forehead and walked down the stairs.
I heard the door open behind me. I turned to see Aqua holding her hands up to her chest as she watched Sora get in the car and drive away. "Did I just hear him say Shawn?" she asked. "The same Shawn I was talking to you about the other day?" My heart sank. It wasn't hard to connect that we were talking about the same guy who moved away and left her here. "Is he really coming here?"
I stood in front of Aqua. "Yes, but he doesn't even know we know each other. Sora and I won't let him ruin what you have going on with Terra. I remember you telling me they never got along."
Her blue eyes met mine. "How do you know him?" I didn't ever tell her the real reason I had dropped the plate the day she told me they dated years ago.
"Uh, well," I said rubbing the back of my neck. "When Shawn moved to the main island, he ended up moving into Sora's old house right across the street. He seemed like a good guy at first but then he kind of went… psycho. He ended up changing for the better but for some reason he just couldn't stay good. He recently got promoted at Destiny Island Foundation and he's looking to expand the company here."
She frowned. "He wasn't always bad." Aqua looked back up toward the direction where Sora was now gone. "I need to go talk to him."
"Aqua, no," I said putting my hands on her shoulder as she stepped forward. "You can't do that. Think about Terra. Remember, they hate each other. It'd be a mistake."
"Kairi," she said putting her hands on my shoulders, too. "I need to do this." She pushed me aside and ran to her car. I chased after her but she had already started the car and was pulling away.
"Aqua!" I yelled after her as the dust she kicked up mingled around me. I pulled my phone out and called Sora. "Sora, Aqua knows he's coming. She's on her way."
"Stop her!" he urged me. I hung up and ran inside the house.
Yuri was in the den on the computer when she realized how out of breath I had become. "Kairi, are you okay, dear?"
"Can I borrow a car? I need to go somewhere," I asked hurriedly.
She looked concerned as she reached up for a set of keys. "Of course. Is everything okay?"
"Yes, thank you!" I said taking the keys from her hand and running back outside. I rushed into the car and started it. My heart was racing as I drove down the driveway. I hoped I could catch up fast enough to stop this encounter that Aqua was planning. I couldn't understand what made her want to meet up with the boy who moved away. She was happy with Terra so there wasn't a reason to meddle with someone who was practically going to lose his mind when he sees the one girl he wishes he could have back.
I carefully drove through the traffic to arrive to the docks where people who traveled to this beautiful location could land. I managed to find a parking spot in the crowded unloading area. There were so many people as I squeezed through the crowd to find either Sora or Aqua. People were starting to look at me like a crazy person as I dodged the tall and the small people in my way. Finally I saw Sora's spiky brown hair standing next to Aqua. They were talking very fast by the looks of it. Sora must have been trying to get rid of Aqua.
"Kairi," a voice said behind me. I turned to see Shawn standing in front of me with a business suit on and a briefcase in hand.
"Shawn!" I gasped.
"What are you doing here?" he asked staring at me. "Never thought I'd see you again after what Sora did at the office." I knew he was referring to getting socked in the face by Sora last month and me getting fired for it.
"Trust me, I didn't want to run into you," I replied. "You're honestly the last person I want to see right now."
He chuckled in amusement. "I see your feelings haven't changed."
I crossed my arms. "Why, why do you always have to be the center of all the drama that happens?"
"What's that supposed to mean?" His hazel eyes stared me up and down.
"Every time your name is mentioned, someone happens to know you and there's some sort of issue that you caused."
He rolled his eyes and set his briefcase down. "What in the world are you talking about Hikari. Spit it out already. Does this have to do with you losing your job? I can't stop our boss from deciding who stays and who goes. It's not my fault you stood up for your fiancé."
It amazed me how much he made my blood boil. I turned to glance at Sora still talking to Aqua who was looking around the groups of people unloading from the ships. Shawn must have caught on to where I was looking because when I turned to face him, he was looking at Sora and Aqua as well. "Who is Hikaru talking to?"
"Nobody," I shook my head. "Let's go wait for him over here." I started to direct him in the opposite side of the docks.
"No, I'm serious. She looks familiar," he replied standing his ground. I turned to see Aqua looking our way. Sora stopped and did the same. "Is that… no."
"Shawn!" Aqua said walking over to us. She stood in front of us and stared at her ex-boyfriend from her teenage years. "You're here…"
"But… how…" he looked at Sora and me. He then glared at us. "Is this some sort of sick joke you guys are trying to play on me?"
"Excuse me?" Sora asked standing a little taller. "Why the hell would we try to mess with you?"
"Hm," he put his hand to his chin. "Let me think, because of all the shit we've been struggling with the since senior year."
"Shawn," Aqua said putting her hand on his chest. "Stop."
He looked back at her and examined her gentle face. "How do you know these two? Did they set you up to this?"
She shook her head. "It doesn't matter how I know them, and no, they didn't set me up. I over heard them talking about you coming here and I had to see for myself."
He put his hand up to her cheek. "You're still here after all this time."
She slowly backed up and bowed her head. "Just because you had to move away doesn't mean I had to. A lot has changed since we last talked, Shawn. We can't just pick up where we left off."
He put his hand on his blond head and sighed. "You're with Terra, aren't you?"
Aqua looked at him and smiled faintly. "I am."
Shawn laughed to himself as he spun around. "I should have know it was going to happen." He turned back around to face Aqua. "So he took the opportunity to move in on you once I moved away."
"Shawn," she said softly yet with warning in her voice. "Don't."
"You were waiting for me to move away so you could be with him. I saw the way you two looked at each other when you thought I wasn't looking. I wasn't an idiot, Aqua," he hissed. She backed up in surprise. I couldn't even believe he was freaking out as much as he was. It was nearly three years ago that they had broken up yet he still managed to release his pent up feelings.
"Shawn, why the hell do you always have to be such an ass," I asked, glaring at him. "You finally see the girl who you wanted back for so long and now you're right in front of her. You don't need to freak out on her the first encounter you have with her."
"Butt out of this, Kairi," Shawn said.
Sora stood in between us and shoved his finger into Shawn's chest. "You need to learn how to control your anger instead of lashing out at everyone who isn't at fault. Have you ever thought that maybe you are the connecting factor for all of us. We're all happier when you aren't here. Maybe Aqua feels the same. Maybe she was destined to be with Terra this whole time and you moving gave her the opportunity."
"Sora," Aqua said pulling his back. "Thank you. I need to handle this on my own, though."
She stared at him while all of the people hustled passed us. I didn't expect it to happen, but it did. Aqua slapped Shawn right in the face. He grasped his cheek and stared at her in awe. "That's for being such an asshole when I haven't seen you in so long. I expected you to be at least happy," she glared. I looked at Sora in surprise and he did the same.
"Aqua," Shawn whispered.
"No, once you've calmed down, you can come find me. Until then, have a good visit Mr. Johnson," she bowed politely before turning away into the crowd.
"Well," I said staring at Aqua then looking back at Shawn. "Bet you weren't expecting that reaction."
"I need to go," Shawn said picking up his briefcase and walking in the opposite direction.
"What about trying to find land?" Sora called after him.
Shawn lifted his hand up but kept walking. "Later, Hikaru."
Sora looked at me and shrugged. "Well, that went differently then I anticipated."
"Now what?" I asked.
"I guess go back to my parents," Sora said wrapping his arm around me. "I'm sure Aqua is already headed there to tell everyone what just happened."
Just as predicted, Aqua had told the family of our recent encounter. "He's back!" Terra growled. "He's going to get his ass whooped for talking to you that way!"
"Terra," Aqua said putting her hand on his cheek. "You don't need to do that. I promise, I handled it."
"She did," Sora chimed in. "She slapped the shit out of him."
"You did?" Roxas asked surprised. She nodded. "Thank god! Maybe if he gets slapped enough he'll go crawl in a hole far, far away from here and from us."
"I'm still going to skin him," Terra crossed his arms. I laughed as I watched them talk. It was so different and yet the same no matter where I went with the people who knew each other. It had actually given me an opportunity to think of what I wanted to write about for the next Speak Publishing Contest. I was in the top 25 now and I needed to continue to think of what to write to make it to the finals. I hurried up to the bedroom and sat at the desk with my notebooks stacked in front of me.
Sora knocked on the door and peered inside. "Kairi?"
"Yes?" I asked as I wrote every thought I had in my head down on the blank page.
"What are you doing, honey?" he asked stepping inside.
"I'm writing. I'm suddenly inspired," I smiled up at him. Sora stood over me and looked down at the page with my scribbles jotted down. I quickly covered it. "You can't look yet. I want you to read it after I send it."
"Why after you send it?"
"Because it's about everything I've seen on this island so far. So much is different, yet the same and I want you to know what I think of it after we leave."
He laughed, "okay, if you insist. I'll be downstairs with the family if you want to join us." I nodded as he leaned down and kissed my forehead. He disappeared behind the door. I continued to write down what I had in my mind.
x.o.x.o.
The next morning, Aqua and I decided to go out for coffee while the rest of the family set up for a family dinner before heading back home tomorrow. We were sitting at a table drinking our lattes when Shawn came in and sat down across the cafe. He pulled out some papers from his briefcase and his laptop, going straight to work. I peered over my coffee cup at Aqua who was casually watching him.
"So why didn't Terra and Shawn get along?" I asked setting my drink down.
She made eye contact with me. "You know how it goes, best friend and boyfriend both with the same feelings. It didn't help that I had a crush on Terra before Shawn and I ever got together."
"Then why did you and Shawn end up together?"
Aqua sighed and began to run her finger along the edge of the cup. "Because once upon a time there was something magical about him. He was a very smooth talker and such a charmer. Somehow, he just managed to win me over faster than Terra."
I leaned in, "do you regret dating him?"
She smiled sadly. "Never. I'm glad we dated but I'm glad that because of him, I'm closer to Terra." We both looked over at Shawn as he continued on his work for what I was assuming to be plans for D.I.F.
"Do you think you'd still be with him if he never moved away?"
"Maybe. But you don't know these things for a reason right? You wouldn't want it to alter your feelings for now." It amazed me how well Aqua held her composure. I know if I were her, I wouldn't ever want to see my ex-boyfriend. Then again, Shawn was also my ex and I still saw him everywhere I went. It was ultimately inevitable. She was right thought. I was happier now with Sora than I ever thought possible and there was a slight possibility that Shawn was some sort of factor.
"Go talk to him. I think it's probably time," I nudged her hand.
"You think?"
"You never know until you do it, right?" I smiled.
"Right," she nodded.
"What are you going to say to him?"
She hummed. "I wish I knew. I guess I'll just start with a hello and see how it goes from there." Aqua stood up and straightened out her outfit. She slowly made her way over to where Shawn was. It wasn't until she was about a foot away from his table did he look up. She asked if she could sit down and he pointed to the seat in front of him. I watched from afar.
I couldn't make out any of Aqua's facial expressions with her back being my way, but Shawn listened contently. Occasionally it looked like he tried to hide a smile as Aqua continued talking animatedly. I smiled at the view. If somehow Aqua was the one that got away, I hoped it'd be her to fix whatever Shawn's deepest problems were. No matter what the rest of us did, Shawn suddenly looked more at peace in that very moment than any other time I'd experienced before.
I sent Aqua a text to let me know when she was done and I'd come back to pick her up. I stood up and smiled before walking into the fresh air. The streets were clear and suddenly everything looked happier and energetic. I glanced back though the window where I could see Aqua smiling with Shawn. She was going to be the one to fix him.
A/N: (Start date: June 6, 2014. End date: June 7, 2014) So…. this literally only took me nearly another three years to write a chapter again. I'm extremely bad at this. What really made me want to come back to this was the fact I'm writing a new story and when I see the stats, I realize how many people daily still read this series. Plus, I still occasionally get reviews asking if I've given up. No, I haven't. I'm determined to finish this, even if I didn't have the same direction I was going for when I was the 17 year old author writing this. I'm 24 now, going on my one year wedding anniversary (June 17) and since Sora and Kairi are getting married, figured I could use my wedding day as theirs! I'm planning to write this in between writing Not A Bad Thing. So, this is for you guys; the ones who are still reading, the ones who still read fan fiction, the ones who I've met through this site, the ones who haven't given up, this is for you. I will finish this story this year (hopefully within the next couple months). Thank you for those who have stuck around! I love you guys!
