Hey gang! Sorry it took so long to post this. There will be another chapter after this but then I think that will be the end. But tell me what you think and I may write more. So this is John's letter to David's family...
And of course...I do not own anything except for the OCs. Hey...I own something, though! That's cool!
Dear Mr. and Mrs. Sterling,
By now I'm sure you've heard of your son's death. Please know that you have my deepest condolences. He was my friend from the beginning of our tour. Before he died, David expressed his wish that I be the one to tell you what happened. You deserve to know how your son died.
There is no delicate way to say this. But David spoke often of you and I know that you are a strong family and will appreciate my bluntness. So here it is.
David and I were helping a young man get to safety after he was injured. The man's friend was helping as well. Before we could get far, a bomb went off next to us. The wounded man was still alive, as was David and I. the wounded soldier's mate didn't make it.
David didn't have long to live, though. His right leg had been mutilated and he was loosing a lot of blood. That's when he told me to look after the young man and that he wanted me to be the one to tell you what happened.
But for a time I didn't think I would live to fulfill his last requests. Trying to move the young man, I got shot. The battalion had been driven back and we were far from any of our fallen comrades.
After waking in the hospital tent I learned that the young soldier had survived. He was discharged shortly before I was. But we both owe our lives to your son.
When the sweeper team came through they were going to pass us by. But David emitted a groan, post mortem, that alerted the soldiers to our position. There was no reason why his boy should do that. But I think that it was David's way of making sure the man was safe and you were informed of your son's heroics.
That request is complete but I shall always be indebted to your son. If there is anything I can do for you and your family all you have to do is ask.
It was an honor and a privilege to have known your son and I am proud to have had him as a friend. Your son was a hero, both in life and death. You deserve to know this and I'm grateful you are able to know the truth.
Again, please accept my apologies for your loss.
Sincerely,
Doctor John H. Watson, Captain in the Queen's Army
Hoped you liked it! One more chapter to go! Please R&R! Thanks
