(Jace)

I wake in the morning earlier than usual, Lili curled next to me. Normally, I am not up this early, even with council meetings or my other jobs. But one thing ripped me from my slumber. The lie I told Liliana, because I will not endanger her safety. I never told her about my audience with Niv-Mizzet. Our talk yesterday struck me to the bone, it left me with many decisions to make.

Niv had said something after I had been touched by the infinite, "The thing you seek behind the back of your greatest love has been bestowed upon you, Jace Beleren." His words, especially those, rung in my head.

I turned in the bed and looked at Liliana Vess, still sleeping soundly. She looked innocent and childlike, not like she had the weight of a thousand years on her shoulders like she normally does. She was so perfect, so beautiful, but looking at her; knowing I lied, makes me feel so guilty. As I concentrate on this guilt, the conversation yesterday makes its way to the forefront of my mind.

"You know what you need to do, Jace, don't you?" Niv had said, his usual quips and sarcastic nature gone from the conversation.

I had looked to Titan, who was swimming affectionately around my head, and back to Niv-Mizzet.

"Are you talking about the incident with that agent, or my looming proposal to Liliana," I had said, meeting his eyes. Niv raised a draconic eybrow and then positioned himself to where his snout was level with my face, just a few yards away from me. He looked at me, studying me.

"Typically, Jace, I would make a witty pun and you would scoff at me, however, you should see something."

He closed his eyes and a powerful aura filled the room. A swirling aetheral river began to flow from the firemind. The room grew to an alluring blue as the stream filled it; the stream passed through everything, even solid objects.

The stream passed through me, and a scene of time, space, and events filled my head, all of which were eerily familiar.

In that moment, I felt as if I was infinite.

Niv-Mizzet opened his eyes and they glowed a brilliant, electric blue.

"Jace, as you know, I'm several millennium old. Many people have slipped from this life and into the next and many, many friends have left me But before you is something none have seen or experienced. This…this is the lifestream."

I admired the blue aura circling, flashing to many different events and lifetimes. Most of them were from the eyes of Niv himself. I gazed with wonder and wanted to learn its secrets. Reaching toward the stream, a small whip of flame hit my hand.

"No, you mustn't touch it, for those who do would force knowledge from the entirety of the multiverse; they would be torn from the fabric of time and space, torn away from all planes."

The awe was almost overwhelming, but I'd rather not become dust. A sliver of the stream trailed off and surrounding me, formed an orb between Niv and me.

"As it would seem, the stream is willing to share with us; it has a piece of time that it feels is important. Now, understand, Jace, it could be anything. It could be an alternate timeline or an outcome based on this moment."

"I understand."

Suddenly, a blinding light filled the room, and images flooded my mind. A swirling blueish black darkness surrounded me, and a stretch of bodies lay before me. The setting was what appeared to be Ravnica, but it was flooded. Bodies littered the street. It was like the true personification of the words "watery grave." Hundreds of thousands of bodies were everywhere. In the center of the city, what used to be the Nivix has a black and blue spider shaped shadow. The eye in the center pierced me, chilling me to my core. In the distance, a blood curdling, spine shattering scream rang out. The scream was hell personified for me, as if it was Lili. Suddenly, I felt as if I was being dragged in the water. Soon, my vision blackened; I was blinded. A familiar voice called to me, and the fin of an ethereal manta ray touched me. I awakened to see Niv and Titan, the orb and stream gone.

"Not many people enter the infinite and survive, Jace. You are the greatest among us indeed."

"Not likely, Niv-Mizzet."

"The thing you seek behind the back of your greatest love has been bestowed upon you, Jace Beleren."

"What do you mean, Niv? What am I seeking behind her back?"

"The thing you are willing to tear your soul into pieces for, Jace."

"I don't understand."

"You will soon, my boy. And Jace?"

"Yes?"

"Fear those who would walk in the shadows and the dark of the waters."

"What?"

Niv had disappeared in a poof of smoke, leaving me to my very confused thoughts.

For once, just once, I wanted a normal moment. I wanted for Liliana and I have as little cares as the elf did, I wish I could wipe our memories; I wanted to be normal. But that is not the case, nor will it ever be with Liliana. I'm afraid of an enemy that I thought vanquished has surfaced once more. I look at Lili, somehow knowing full well that the next few months would be difficult for us. There is nothing I can do. I'm going to enjoy the now, because that's all I can do. I wrap my arm around Lili and peck her on the lips, breathing in her sweet lavender smell. It's perfect, just like she is.

She stirs and her eyelids flutter open, revealing her magnificent jet eyes.

"Good morning, handsome."

"Good morning, my love."

I kiss her on the lips again, but as I go to pull away ,she braids her hands in my hair, pulling me to her. She presses sweet and full kisses to me, before straddling my waist and kissing my neck and collarbone. A growl rises in my throat, but before I can act on any intentions, she pecks me on the lips and pulls way. She gets out of bed, letting her nightgown fall to the ground; revealing her full beauty and splendor. I admire her for a moment before she speaks. She flips her hair over her shoulder, winks, catching me ogling her. A knowing smile creeps on her face. She gives me a come hither motion, and I do, wrapping my arms around her beautiful, curvy hips.

"Let's shower."

I pick her up, bridal style, and Lili lets out a beautiful giggle. We waste no time, soon we are both in the tub. She's no stranger to my wandering hands and lustful gazes. Sometimes, she makes it easy to forget who we are, who we stand for. As I plant kisses on her neck and explore her body like the wonderland that it is, Niv's words ring in my head.

The thing you seek behind the back of your greatest love…Beware of those who lurk in the shadows…Beware of the dark of the waters, my boy….
