River stood still, thoughts flowing through her head. They were surrounded. She considered her options. They could materialize somewhere else, but Madame Kovarian would find them. At this point, they probably had some sort of tracker on the Tardis. River glanced nervously at the Doctor, then at the strange man who had interrupted their flee. It's too late for him to leave now. River thought as she looked at Jack, knowing Kovarian wouldn't let him go.
"Doctor, what are we going to do?" She whispered, under her breath.
He swallowed nervously, glancing around with a hopeless look on his face, running his hands through his hair. "I, uh, ummm-"
"Can someone tell me what's going on here?" Jack hissed at the two of them.
"They're coming for the baby." River stated flatly. "The daughter of a Time Lord is quite special."
Jack looked at the two of them before holding up his wrist. "Could a Vortex Manipulator be of any help?"
River's eyes lit up. "That could actually work! Doctor?"
The Doctor nodded. "Yes, perhaps. Can it handle three people?"
Jack shrugged. "No idea, but it seems to be our only way out at this point."
River and the Doctor began to approach Jack, only to be stopped by the entrance of Kovarian with two guards, holding large guns.
She sighed. "This could've been easier on you. If only you had obliged, we wouldn't have to use force."
River opened her mouth to argue, during which she tried to reach out for Jack's arm. The guards noticed, shooting her with the guns.
"River!" The Doctor yelled out, watching her collapse onto the floor.
Madame Kovarian chuckled, smirking at them. "Oh, don't worry, the guns won't hurt her; they only knock you out. We don't want to hurt the baby, after all."
The Doctor attempted to reach River, only to be shot as well.
Kovarian turned to Jack. "Hey, Lady, I just got here, I don't even know what's going on."
She shook her head. "We can't risk you running for help, now can we?"
With a nod of her head, the gun fired, leaving the three of them on the floor, deep in unconsciousness.
River opened her eyes slowly to a bright, sterile room. The fluorescent lighting burned her eyes; she squinted groggily at the area around her.
Where-What happened? She thought to herself, her head throbbing. Memories flooded back to her, slowly. She remembered meeting Jack, she remembered an alarm...But why?
The stars cleared her vision, and she glanced around the room. She was hooked up to a machine that seemed to be tracking her pulse, as well as an IV. It finally hit her that Madame Kovarian must have caught her.
She gasped, suddenly alert. Where's my husband?
Without a second thought, she ripped out the IV, sucking in a breath as her arm filled with pain. Cradling her arm, she attempted to stand, only to fall back. Something was wrong with her sense of balance.
She looked down. Her stomach was definitely bigger. She stared, wide-eyed, a sinking feeling in her stomach. How long had she been here?
She tried again to get up, this time succeeding to do so, only with a slightly wobble. Walking as fast as her swollen body could, she made her way towards what she prayed was the exit. Or, at least, not a trap.
She went through the doors, thankful that no one was there. She quickened her speed, holding on to her stomach protectively.
She turned a corner, running into somebody. She prepared herself to run, then realized who it was. Jack Harkness.
She smiled. "Captain! Good to see you!"
He wrapped a hand around her arm, a worried expression on her face. "Are you-" He looked her up and down, "-okay?"
She nodded. "Yes, I'm fine. Have you seen the Doctor?"
"I was just with him. He went off to go find the Tardis, told me to go find you and then we'd meet up."
They started to walk on, searching for the Doctor and a way out.
A sign stated they were on the fifteenth floor. "Where exactly did the Doctor run off to?"
"The garage."
"Ah." Her husband was fifteen floors down. How were they going to make it down there unnoticed? "Only fifteen floors to go. Is there an elevator, by any chance?"
"Nope."
"Of course not." She sighed as they turned the corner.
He stopped her with his arm. "Shit."
They stared at the men before them, guns pointed directly at them.
"Hand her over, or we'll shoot."
River glanced around the room, trying to find an escape route. She realized there was none. She bit her lip in frustration.
Jack stepped forward. "Grab my arm," He whispered, before turning to the men. "Afraid we can't do that gentlemen. Sucks, too. I wouldn't mind having a drink with the two of you."
River couldn't help but chuckle at his flirtatiousness as she watched him. In a swift move, he pulled his other arm in front of him and began rapidly entering in digits.
He winked at the men as they dematerialized away, the guards running towards them.
They materialized on the fifth floor, much to Jack's surprise. "What?! We're supposed to be in the garage! Damn thing must've broke again."
She glared at him. "You've had that thing the entire time? Why didn't we use it before?!" She slid to the floor.
He rolled his eyes. "I didn't want to call attention to ourselves, okay? I figured we shouldn't have to use it unless there was an emergency. And what does it matter? We're okay, and if we're fast, we can make it to the garage before more guards or whatever they are are sent after us. Now, I realize you're pregnant, but we really need to- Are you okay?"
River stared off at a wall, a twisted expression on her face. She zoned back in. "What? Oh, yeah, fine. Let's-Let's go."
She attempted to stand, but fell back, Jack catching her. He helped her up, staring at her worriedly. "Are you sure?"
She nodded, then cried out, clutching her stomach while leaning over. Jack caught her again before she could stumble over.
She shoved him away halfheartedly. "I'm FINE. I swear, it's nothing, she's just kicking-". Her eyes widened as she held onto herself, glancing down slowly at the puddle pooling around her feet.
