Chapter 3:

Kagome and Shippo stood stunned against the bookcase; slowly, they began to process what had just occurred.

"Wh-what just happened?" Shippo blurted as he slid down Kagome's back, "We can't stay here…we have a home." He trailed off and looked up to see Kagome's face: she was mortified, "Kagome?" He called as he pulled at her dress.

"Shippo, we got to get out of here," she said finally.

"No, you can't!" Rin yelled as she placed herself in front of Kagome, "This is your new home now!" tears slowly began to resurface on the young girl's face, "I need you to stay…"

Kagome could not understand her last sentence, she implied a deeper meaning to her plea," But what about my mother, grandfather, and brother? I can't just leave them, especially after returning from a long trip…"Kagome fought back her tears, "is there any way?"

Rin's face hardened, "If it were not for me, Lord Sesshoumaru would have you killed. He does not take kindly to humans, or demons who meddle with humans."

"Then what does that make you!" Shippo growled, as best he could to sound mean.

Rin sighed, "I don't know…"

In that moment a plump woman in a purple maid's dress popped into the room, carrying a tray of tea cups and croissants, "Well, I would not have believed the words coming out of every servants mouths until I smelled your scents! " She placed the tray on a small foot stand, and gave Kagome and Shippo a good look, "OH dear, you both look quite terrified, and dirty, as she gave a quick sniff, "but let's get you all settled and ready so you may all freshen up!"

Kagome wasn't sure if she should be offended, "Um, my name is Kagome, Madame, and this is Shippo."Kagome curtsied and kept her eyes on the woman; were it not for her weak demonic aura, Kagome would of believed her to be human also despite her pointed ears and sharp canine teeth.

She brightened," It's very nice to meet you Kagome and Shippo. Je m'appplle Madame Pots and I shall take you straight to your new quarters." She gave Rin a short nod, and Rin picked up the tray and left, "Now then, follow me and please stay close, though you are out of immediate danger I cannot promise anything if you stray."

Kagome and Shippo gulped and nodded, their interrupted conversation would have to wait.

"Come along, this castle if very immense and one could easily get lost in it. In fact I remember when I first came to the castle I nearly locked myself in the dungeon! For it not for Master Jaken who found me! " Madame Pots giggled and rambled on about the history of its dog demon family, "as you can see, Lord Sesshoumaru's family crest is the white cherry blossom within the red hexagon; all together representing efficiency, community, and the value of life. And Lord Sesshoumaru…"

Shippo snorted quietly, "Value of life my…"

"Shippo…hush." Kagoma admonished, though she tried to keep herself calm, Kagome felt as if her life was now going to be cut short and her nerves were on edge. How are we going to get out of here. She studied everything around her as they reached the top of the main entrance staircase facing an enormous doorway intricately decorated in gothic shapes and designs.

"Here is the grand ballroom, and if you follow me to the right we shall head to the east wing," led Madame Pots.

The corridor was foreboding with gargoyles placed evening below each supporting pillar and menacing paintings of demon lords and duchesses hung so that every step Kagome took they watched carefully and predatorily; Kogome couldn't help but feel as if each gargoyle and demon looked worse than the previous one.

A single tear fell down her cheek, but she quickly wiped it away as she noticed their smaller human companion looked up, almost cheerfully, and gave her a small smile. "Your room will be right across mine!" She said.

Kagome nodded and gave a slight half-hearted smile in return, "Will we be seeing the rest of the castle?" she asked, despite the east wing looking desolate and fearful, the west wing from the quick glance she got looked much worse.

Madame Pots paused for a second before making a slight turn towards her, "The east wing is actually what leads to most of the castle; it is the only way to get through to back of the castle and reach the next three floors." She gave a slightly hardened face," And the west wing is forbidden. Only Lord Sesshoumaru and Master Jaken are allowed there; but there is nothing there, it only has a single corridor and stair case to the highest room of the castle." She finished quickly and beckoned them to continue down the corridor that leads to another staircase.

Sesshoumaru nearly destroyed the door to his quarters, which would not have been the first time, as he entered furiously. His claws glowed green as he slashed at his already heavily marked wall.

"Why do I find myself at the emotional mercy of a 10 year old?" he hissed as the sizzle of the poison on brick subsided. "This curse will be the death of me!" But he stopped himself before he would continue slashing at the wall, this sort of tantrum was not like him. Though it was not the first, he began realizing that these angered fueled passions were uncharacteristic of his nonchalant behavior. Even when forced to deal with anything that required his strict punishment, he would not allow his emotions to get the better of him. His stoical personality was what helped strike fear in his subordinates; unfeeling, cruel, and merciless was Sesshoumaru. Behaving like a child as he was doing would break that fear and his subordinates would question his ability to lead if he was so easily won over by anger. He mumbled a string of curses towards the enchantress, it seemed that the longer he had the curse the more he began acting, dare his think it? Human. His eyes began to cloud up red before he swiftly destroyed a small bombé to his right. He blinked and calmed himself with a few breaths and called for Jaken.

"Ye-yes, my Lord?" Jaken had happily waited several feet away from Lord Sesshoumaru's quarters. He would not risk his life today.

Without further hesitation, "Rin will be taking up the peasant woman as a governess," he said with large traces of disgust, "Be sure she knows full well of the dangers of her permanent stay here in my castle. She will not be spared punishment for rule breaking. Reiterate the restriction to this wing of the castle." He paused for a second; he now had to calculate everything much more carefully, he could not have his housemen and servants spread any unwelcome rumors of taken on a human governess, and now the danger of the wolf tribe knowing of his human ward was coming back to his mind," Let the castle's servants and guards know of the wrench's new occupation in regards to Rin and forbid any further talk on the matter. If her scent was not so strong I suspect the whole castle knows of her existence. "

Jaken was nodding and feverishly writing everything down, "Yes of course, My Lord."

Sesshoumaru sat on his large mahogany bergere "As for the matter on the Wolf tribe," as his claws dug into the armrest," separate the leader, Kouga, I will be interrogating him soon enough."

"Yes, of course." Jaken bowed and ran out closing the door behind him.

"Naraku," Sesshoumaru peered towards his balcony overlooking the rest of the mountain face towards the East. "Your demise will come swift if you dare provoke a war with this Sesshoumaru's territory." He threatened silently.

"And here we are, as Lady Rin said earlier, your quarters are right across from each other." Madame Pots opened the overbearing bedroom door, and despite herself Kagome looked in awe.

The room was fairly bright compared to the corridors and hallways leading up to the third floor. And to Kagome's relief not gaudily decorated as was the style of most of France's royals. Maybe that fashion does not necessarily apply to the demon world…or maybe just Lord Sesshoumaru. Kagome thought.

The room was fairly large and sparingly decorated which made it look even bigger. Directly in front of the door at fifteen feet away were the centered large windows that took up most of the wall facing the North of the mountains, complete with a small balcony. To the right the room's bed was fairly simple, though still larger than what Kagome had ever slept in, with small figures chiseled into its marbled frame; the sheets a soft grey color with similar gothic designs as the doors of the castle with silver rope trim and adorned with a transparent white bed privacy curtain. On opposite the bed was a similarly colored chaise longue beside a dark wood armoire and a few commodes on either side of a fireplace. On the walls that did not have any furniture or landscape paintings had a built in bookshelf fully stocked and peeked Kagome's interest. Are those Demon history books…?

After a few moments, Madame Pots smiled, "I trust the room is to your liking?"

Kagome was brought back from her moment of awe, "I'm sorry, Um…yes, thank you. Shippo will be staying with me, right?" Kagome's eyes widened slightly for fear to be separated from her dearest friend.

Madame Pots observed, "There was a small child's room just a few more doors down, but if you wish, he may stay in your room, I'll have the servants bring a child's bed."

"Oh that won't be necessary! I'll sleep with Kagome!" yelled Shippo.

Madame Pots gave a look to Kagome that read of confusion, "Are…Are you his surrogate mother, mademoiselle Kagome?"

"Oh, somewhat…Shippo lost his family and he's been with our family since…" Kagome trailed off, she knew how sensitive the topic was for Shippo as she held him closer.

"Oh then it'll be all right, as long as you're comfortable," Madame Pots' eyes began to sadden, "I hope your stay is pleasant, despite the rush and forcefulness of its reason…" but she brightened back up, "Please let me know if you need anything. The fire should already have been started in the fireplace; I will be back with fresh clothes and show you to the bathing rooms so you may freshen up. Au revoir, Mademoiselle." She closed the door behind her as she and Rin exited to leave the new "guests" in peace.

As soon as Kagome assumed they were out of earshot, her eyes instantly began to water and she began sobbing. "Mama…Grandfather…Souta. We're trapped… " She breathed after each sob.

Shippo slipped out of her hands and lead her to the bed. She slowly dragged herself in it as he curled up beside her to try and comfort her. But both soon began crying together. We may never see our family again she thought in horror as the shock of the day's events finally took its toll on her and put them both to sleep.
